The Boko Haram insurgents have burnt down the palace of the Emir of Askira in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, the spokesman for the youth vigilance group, Jubrin Gunda, said on Tuesday.
Speaking to our correspondent on the telephone, Gunda said the palace was attacked by the insurgents on Sunday night.
He said during the Sunday’s attack, the palace was razed by the terrorist sect.
He lamented that after beating a retreat on Sunday, the insurgents came back to Askira on Monday morning to continue their reign of terror as they burnt down other houses and killed scores of residents of the town.
Gunda added, “As of now, I cannot tell you the number of people killed but all I can say is that the palace of the emir was razed on Sunday by the insurgents at night. They equally returned to burn more houses in the town on Monday morning.
“At the moment, they are not in the town as they have fled back into the bushes and as such, you cannot say the town has been captured.”

Three persons have been confirmed dead in a suicide bomb attack on a restaurant in Potiskum, Yobe State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Toyin Gbadegesin, who spoke on the telephone to journalists on Tuesday, said the bomber blew himself and two others at the Alamin Restaurant along Damaturu Road in Potiskum.

The incident, according to him, occurred around 2.20pm on Tuesday, adding that those injured and the dead had been taken to the Potiskum General Hospital.

The PPRO said 12 others were currently receiving treatment, having sustained injuries from the blast.

A hospital source, who did not want his name in print, said on the telephone that 13 persons were brought to the hospital injured and that three corpses had been deposited in the morgue of the hospital.

Potiskum is the commercial nerve centre of Yobe State, which has experienced several cases of suicide bomb attacks since the commencement of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The Director, Naval Information, Commodore Kabiru Aliyu, has said the Federal Government has procured four warships for the Nigerian Navy.

Aliyu, whose comments were contained in a statement on Sunday, said the four warships would be inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday at the Naval Dockyard Limited, Victoria Island, Lagos.

He said the new ships would enhance the Navy’s operations against contemporary security challenges especially on the nation’s maritime domain.

Aliyu said the exercise was unique because this was the first time the Navy would take delivery of four warships at once.

The Naval spokesman said the gesture only demonstrated the efforts of the government to reposition the Navy to meet contemporary challenges.

Amb. Rufus Akeju, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, says any voter caught with fake Permanent Voter Card during the general elections will be prosecuted.

Akeju, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Sunday, vowed that INEC would not allow any form of rigging during the elections.

“Any voter who is thinking of voting with a fake PVC during the general elections should shelve the idea now because doing so would land them in jail,” he said.

NAN reports that the presidential and National Assembly elections would hold on March 28 while those of governorship and state Houses of Assembly had been slated for April 11.

The INEC boss also said mechanisms had been put in place by the commission to check rigging and ensure credible elections.

“For example, it impossible for anybody to steal ballot papers in the name of rigging because there cannot be more than 750 ballot papers in any polling unit,” he said.

Akeju also said that a total of 1,563,800 PVCs had been distributed by INEC in the state.

Wife of the Ondo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Mrs. Tamarauemi Kekemeke, has passed away.

Although details of the cause of her death was scanty as of the time of filing this report, Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Omo’oba Adesanya, in a statement said the woman died in Akure in the early hours of Friday, February 13.

Adesanya said, “We regret to announce the passing away of Mrs. Tamarauemi Celestina Kekemeke, wife of the State Chairman, Ondo State, Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke.

“Mrs Kekemeke is survived by husband and many children.”

He stated that the burial arrangements would be announced later, praying that her soul rests in peace.

Following assurances by the Federal Government that it would battle the Boko Haram insurgency to a standstill in six weeks, the #BringBackOurGirls coalition on Saturday in Abuja launched a six-week countdown to the rescue of the 219 Chibok school girls in Boko Haram captivity and an end to terrorism in the country.

The group said the launch date marked 10 months since the abduction of 276 Chibok girls from their school dormitory by the terrorist group.

The BBOG spokesman, Rotimi Olawale, in a statement said the movement has, over the past months, sustained its advocacy, including daily sit-outs in Abuja and regular sit-outs in Lagos and Ibadan as well as several other protests held across the world.

It noted that assurances by the FG that the girls would be rescued alive very soon and reports in the media that some of the girls were sighted as recent as November last year, offers a ray of hope that if urgent actions were taken, the girls would be rescued alive.

The group insisted that it would continue to pursue its singular purpose of ensuring the safe returns of the chibok girls and all other abducted Nigerians by the deadly sect.

According to the BBOG, the countdown will help them monitor the activities of the multinational forces toward the eradication of the insurgents and the rescue of the Chibok girls from their captors.

Gombe declares 24-hour curfew

Gombe State government on Saturday declared a 24-hour curfew on the state capital and surrounding areas after a failed attempt by the deadly Boko Haram sect to capture Gombe metropolis.

The military engaged the sect in a fierce battle that lasted over three hours before the capital could be secured.

The imposition of the curfew was contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Sule Bage.
