By Izunna Okafor, Awka

No fewer than fifty thousand new direct jobs will soon been created in Anambra State, following the arrival of the Soulcity project in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State.

The Executive Director of Soulcity Integrated Resource Ltd., Chief Nnamdi Nwokoye, disclosed this while speaking at the groundbreaking and unveiling of the new smart mega city in Obosi.

The well-attended event, which held on Tuesday, September 17, was graced by community members and leaders, as well as top government functionaries, both at local, state, and federal levels, who gathered to witness the groundbreaking that marked the official commencement of construction at the new smart city.

Located close to the 2nd Niger Bridge, at the serene heartland of Obosi, the Soulcity (nicknamed “Tourist Town”) will comprise a massive tourist centre, a wonderland, shopping malls, centre for arts/culture, residential areas, water resort areas, hospitals, hotels, schools, amusement parks, markets, and a mini stadium, among other facilities that make it stand out among others.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director, Chief Nwokoye, said the new city would be one of a kind in Anambra State, Southeast, and Nigeria at large, given its masterful and touristic design, massive potentials, and general aesthetics, coupled with availability of 24-hour power supply and airtight security.

While commending the state government for its collaboration and enormous support so far to the project, Chief Nwokoye, who said he had lived many years of his life in Lagos, explained that his vision to embark on the project and his choice of Anambra as its location were inspired by Governor Chukwuma Soludo's “Akụ Ruo Ụlọ” (Think Home Philosophy) advocacy, and the corresponding transformation that is ongoing in different sectors of the State since his assumption of office.

According to him, the project will complement the efforts of the state government and also boost the state's economy in several ways. This, he said, is in addition to over fifty thousand direct jobs and over hundred thousand indirect jobs that will be created by the project that will attract investors from different parts of the world. Further in giving the overview of the project, he said the Soulcity, which is a smart city, has every outstanding feature of a first-class smart city, such that one can also comfortably stay therein for more than five years and do everything he wants, without going outside.

While calling on Ndị Anambra and investors from all over the world to come and invest in the Soulcity, Chief Nwokoye also re-emphasized the need to encourage and support the thrive and more of such investment and developmental initiatives, and do away with anything that is investment-unfriendly, so as to help beam Anambra's light and potential brighter to the world.

Earlier performing the groundbreaking on behalf of the Governor, the State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Mr. Don Onyenji, described Soulcity as a welcome and auspicious development, adding that it also came at the right time when Governor Soludo's vision for Onitsha 2.0 is already taking the center stage, which will definitely increase the needs and demands for landed property, residential houses and other such facilities in the entire area, including Obosi, which is one of the closest towns to Onitsha. He described the Soulcity Obosi as an idyllic and serene destination, particularly citing the scenic waterways in the vicinity, even as he encouraged individuals and organisations to seize the opportunity to invest in the region.

According to the Commissioner, the project also aligns with the Governor's “Akụ Ruo Ụlọ” advocacy, and his strides to further harness the investment potentials and higher drive the tourism sector of the State.

While commending the Ndị Anambra who have embraced the ‘Think Home’ philosophy, Commissioner Onyenji, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Jerome Iloka, further reassured the Management of the Soulcity and all the current and potential investors of government's continuous support, investment-friendly environment and adequate protection of their investments in Anambra State. He also re-emphasized the Solution Government's open-handedness to welcome many more investors, both from within and outside the country, as the State is speedily on the progressive rise.

On his own part, the Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Onitsha Area Office, Mr. Suleiman Nicholas, noted that the agency has granted all necessary approvals to the Soulcity Integrated Resource Ltd., permitting the siting of the facilities and their seamless and efficient operations in the area, especially the parts that have to do with waterways.

While commending the level of collaboration and relationship between the investors, the government and other relevant stakeholders; Mr. Nicholas also noted that the Authority is taking proactive measures to maintain the waterways in good condition and ensure their safety and viability for activities. He also expressed confidence that the development of Soulcity would not only enhance economic activities in the region but also elevate the state's status as a hub for modern infrastructure and investment.

Speaking on behalf of the community and land owners in the area, a stakeholder in the community, Ogbueshi Chris Ezeolu expressed gratitude to the investors for choosing Obosi as the site for the Soulcity project, highlighting its potential to drive economic growth and social transformation in the area. He assured the investors of the community’s continuous support and solidarity in the project, while also urging the government to prioritize community youths in job opportunities to created by the project. The octogenarian further expressed optimism that the development would attract and spark off more investments to the region, thereby making Obosi a model for sustainable urban growth; even as he also called for cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure the project's success and sustainability for the benefit of all, both in the present and future generation.

Also graced by the Director of Diaspora Affairs and Entertainment, Mrs. Nneka Nwankwo; the Public Relations Officer, Ifeyinwa Ogwo, and other top personalities from the State Ministry of Culture Entertainment and Tourism; the official unveiling of the Soulcity project, by the Governor's representative, formed the high point of the event.

Crime / Anambra Lawmaker, Hon. Nnabuife, Condemns Incessant Attacks On Police Facilities by IzunnaOkafor(m): 11:54am On Sep 17
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Member representing Orumba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Princess Chinwe Nnabuife has condemned the recent attack on the Umunze police station by some yet-to-be-identified gunmen, which also claimed the lives of two police officers.

It would be recalled that some unidentified gunmen, in the early hours of Monday, September 16, invaded a police station at Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where they also threw in some explosives.

The gunmen, in the process, also killed two of the police officers on duty at the station at the time, when they were making efforts to repel the attack. Some parts of the police station were also engulfed by fire after the detonation of some improvised explosive devices (IEDs) thrown into the facility by the gunmen, some of which, though, were eventually recovered (unexploded) by the joint security force.

Reacting to the incident, Hon. Princess Nnabuife decried the rate of incessant attacks and the destruction of innocent lives and security facilities in Umunze and other parts of Anambra State, describing the it as an affront to peace and progress in the region.

Sympathizing with the families of the slain officers, as well as the Umunze police station and Anambra State Police Command, the lawmaker condemned the violent actions as not only barbaric but also deeply counterproductive to the security and stability of the community, the state, and the region at large. She challenged the perpetrators to have a serious rethink about the path of violence and incessant wastage of human lives, noting that it only brings pain, destruction, and a cycle of fear.

“What sense is there in such a violent crime? Violence destroys the very fabric of our society and pushes us further into chaos.

“I therefore call on those behind these incessant attacks to lay down their arms and embrace peace. The future of our community, region and society at large depends on cooperation, dialogue, and the pursuit of constructive solutions, rather on senseless bloodshed,” Hon. Nnabuife emphasized.

While expressing confidence that the perpetrators of such heinous act would be grilled and swiftly brought to justice, the federal lawmaker also reassured the people of Umunze and Orumba that she is already collaborating with relevant security agencies to address the lingering security challenges in the region, while also pushing for more proactive security measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

She also called on the youths, in particular, to reject any form of manipulation or inducement to engage in acts of violence, urging them to channel their energy toward positive and productive ventures that contribute to the societal growth and general development.

“These young people should know that they are both present and the future; and it is heartbreaking to see their talents wasted in the pursuit of destruction. We must focus on building, not tearing down,” she added.

Continuing, Hon. Princess Nnabuife implored the people of Umunze to remain calm but vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies; encouraging them to promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

According to her, the security of every society requires a collective effort, and is a shared responsibility.

“We must all come together to protect our communities and support those who risk their lives to keep us safe,” the lawmaker added.

Concluding, Hon. Nnabuife reassured the families of the slain officers of adequate support and solidarity, especially in this time of grief; while also reaffirming her commitment to doing everything within her power to safeguard the constituents, tighten up security and prevent future reoccurrence of such incidents.

“Government remains resolute in tackling insecurity across the State. And we will not be deterred by these cowardly acts. Together, we will rise above this challenge, and have enduring peace return to our land,” she added.

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The 2024 edition of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) capacity-building program has come to a successfully end in Seoul, South Korea, with participants from Nigeria, including Anambra State, representing the country.

The two-week training, which held from September 1st to September 14th, brought together 3 professionals each from five countries — Fiji, Yemen, Paraguay, Kazakhstan, and Nigeria—to enhance their skills in public audit and management.

Nigeria was represented at the event by three participants, each selected from different regions of the country: the North, West, and Southeast.

Down in the Southeast, the Head of the Department of Accounts in the Anambra State Ministry of Power and Water Resources, Mrs. Molokwu Ifeoma, was selected to represent the region, while participants from Kebbi and Kwara states respectively were selected to represent other two regions.

The KOICA program is widely recognized for its emphasis on public audit systems, while also providing the participants with in-depth training on Korea’s public audit framework. The 2024 session focused on the structure and operations of Korea’s Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), the role of internal audit units in government, and innovations aimed at strengthening public audit practices. Participants were also exposed to Korea's technological advancements in auditing, giving them tools to apply in their respective countries.

Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, expressed pride in the state’s representation at such a high-profile international event. He commended Mrs. Molokwu Ifeoma’s participation and noted the positive impact her acquired knowledge would have on the state’s public financial management systems.

According to him, the training aligns with the Governor Chukwuma Soludo's broader goals of improving public financial management and ensuring the efficient use of public resources. He highlighted the importance of international partnerships in capacity building, noting that KOICA’s programs offer unique opportunities for public servants to learn from global best practices and apply them in their local contexts

“This training comes at a time when Anambra State is working tirelessly to reform its public financial management systems. The insights Mrs. Molokwu will gain from Korea’s advanced audit system will greatly contribute to our efforts in improving accountability and transparency in the use of public funds,” he said.

Continuing, Commissioner Chukwuemeka explained that “Mrs. Molokwu’s participation in KOICA’s program is a notable achievement for Anambra State. Her involvement will not only enhance the skills of our public officers but will also contribute to improving our accountability and transparency measures. The knowledge she has gained is expected to strengthen our efforts in managing public funds effectively.”

The Commissioner further lauded KOICA for its commitment to fostering global cooperation and knowledge exchange, adding that the state looks forward to incorporating best practices from Korea’s public audit systems into its governance structures.

Participants in the program engaged in various activities, including interactive sessions with officials from Korea’s Board of Audit and Inspection, site visits to key government institutions, and group workshops aimed at addressing real-world audit challenges —all designed to provide participants with practical skills they can implement in their home countries.

On her own part, the Anambra participant, Mrs. Molokwu, while reflecting on the experience, described it as insightful and invaluable.

“The training has broadened my understanding of public audit and how technology can enhance the transparency and efficiency of audits. I am eager to apply what I have learned to improve our processes back home,” she remarked.

KOICA’s capacity-building programs have been instrumental in fostering global partnerships and improving public sector management in participating countries. The agency’s focus on sharing Korea’s experiences and expertise has earned it a reputation for strengthening governance structures worldwide.

With the program now concluded, Nigeria’s representatives, including Mrs. Molokwu from Anambra, are expected to implement the lessons learned in their respective states, with the aim of enhancing public audit systems and promoting transparency in public administration.

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

No fewer than one thousand, five hundred members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP), in Obosi community, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Tuesday, announced their resignation from the parties and their defection to the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

This is coming barely four days after another batch of over one thousand persons in the same community dumped their previous party, PDP, to join APGA.

The new defectors were received into APGA at the residence of the State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Ifeanyi Okoma, who also hosted other members and stakeholders of the Party in the local government at the event.

Speaking on behalf of others after being received into the party, the now-former APC Woman Leader in Obosi, Mrs. Uju Ikebuaku, who decamped with a mass population of other members of the party said they were tired of darkness (referring to APC), hence their decision to defect to APGA, which she described as the moving train.

While noting that they had been in darkness for long, until recently when their eyes have opened and they began to see, acknowledge and admire the good works of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led APGA government in Anambra State.

She further attested that it was primarily the evidence-based good governance they see in the Soludo Administration that endeared them to APGA, adding that they “have decisively come ‘home’ to join in building and developing Anambra to continue shinning brighter as the true Light of the Nation.”

Earlier speaking, the Anambra State Works Commissioner, Engr. Okoma described the massive inflow of people into APGA as one of the evidences of the good works and the unique governance style of the “Solution Government” in Anambra, which he described as the major thing that endears the party to people.

Continuing, he reeled out the Solution Government's strides in the health sector (where he said the Governor recruited thousands of health workers, undertook the renovation of General Hospitals and upgrading of primary healthcare centers across the state, as well as declared free antenatal service and free child deliveries in all state-owned hospitals, which have reduced mortality rate and increased the inflow of people into Anambra); the ongoing agricultural revolution (where he said the Governor has so far distributed millions of improved palm, coconut, breadfruit and other seedlings in the state and flagged off several farming and agricultural revolutionary programs) among other several achievements, all aimed at further boosting the standard of living and reducing the cost of living in Anambra. These, he said, benefit people of almost all age brackets in the state in one way or the other, both in the long or in the short run.

The, Commissioner, who said the Governor currently has some bigger visions and plans for the moribund Oseakwa Seaport in Ihiala, Onitsha Main Market and other major cities and rural communities in Anambra State; commended the defectors for thinking it wise to join the “moving train”, while also urging them to remain committed, and to support and be good ambassadors of APGA and the Solution Government in Obosi, Idemili, Anambra State, and beyond.

Speaking while receiving the new members on behalf of the National Chairman of APGA, the Transition Committee Chairman for Idemili North Local Government Area, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, accompanied by the Obosi Ward APGA Chairman, Hon. Onyeka Abanobi, attested that the party and Anambra State under Governor Soludo have truly remained remained progressive; even as he expressed optimism for a higher growth and further exploits.

In a remark at the event, the Convener, Solution for Good Governance, Hon. Okoye Ikwuka, who graced the occasion with his members, said every part of Anambra State has witnessed and benefited from the impacts of the Soludo's good governance in one way or the other, which, he said, deserves commendation.

While urging the new members show selflessness and make visible impacts in the party, Hon. Ikwuka also called for massive support for APGA candidates in the entire local government and the state at large in the September 28 local government poll, as part of their own ways of showing appreciation and reciprocating the good works of the APGA government in Anambra.

The calm town of Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State has witnessed a shocking bloodbath, following the killing of many youths of the community by yet-to-be-identified persons.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Monday, September 9, when some youths and indigenes of the community were invited to the Agu Isioye land belonging to the community to check something, only the be seized up and greeted with gunshots by some armed men hiding in the bush.

This was corroborated by videos and pictures currently trending on social media, showing corpses of some of the murdered persons, as well as one of the survivors who escaped the scene with bullet wounds.

Although, speculations and allegations abound that the assassins were sponsored by unknown individuals from Nawfia, a neighbouring community that shares land boundary with Enugwu-Ukwu, also in Njikoka Local Government Area; the true identities of the suspects are yet to be unmasked, while the reasons for such bloody attack on armless persons remain yet uncertain.

Recounting his ordeal from sickbed, the survivor said, “I don't know what is happening in Enugwu-Ukwu; Enugwu-Ukwu is no longer safe

“I received a call from someone to come and check something for him at Agu Isioye. So, when I got there, the next thing I heard was Everybody lie down! Everybody lie down! And then I began to inquire what was happening. I also saw some motorcycles belonging to people whom I couldn't even see there.

“So, as I began to question the guy who was saying Everybody lie down, he fired me a gunshot and also fired the person I was with. And there were also some corpses of some unidentified persons who were murdered and dumped inside the bush there before I came.”

According to him, the bullets pierced into his stomach and other parts of his body, including his penis.

While recounting how he managed to limp from inside the bush to the main road with the bullet wounds before he started seeing and seeking the help of some persons who assisted to convey him to a safer place for medication, he further thanked God that he was able to survive attack; even as he further recounted that he also saw a corpse of an indigene of Agu-Ukwu Nri community who was also killed dumped inside the same bush. He also warned the people to be cautious of the Agu Isioye area as a deadly danger zone for now, as some heavily-armed men still camp there.

In a brief social media post on the incident on Monday, a prominent indigene of Enugwu-Ukwu community, Chief Dr. Uche Nworah, condemned the attack and also captured the reactions of some other concerned indigenes of the community and their calls to government regarding the incident.

Titled “Enugwu-Ukwu Community Seek Anambra State Government’s Intervention In Averting Communal Crises With Neighbours Nawfia” Nworah's post reads:

“Leaders and indigenes of Enugwu-Ukwu community in Njikoka local government area of Anambra state, have called on the state government to urgently investigate the killing of some of its indigenes by men allegedly sponsored by unknown individuals from Nawfia, a neighbouring community, also in Njikoka.

It was reported that the men were lured via phone calls to Agu Isionye land belonging to Enugwu-Ukwu and were each executed gangland style. Enugwu-Ukwu is currently deliberating on this. Our President - General has already informed the state government. The police authorities at Zone 13, Ukpo, Dunukofia local government have also been informed. Urgent action is required to avert escalation of the crises.”

“A youth leader in the community, Emeka Okonkwo said that Nawfia people in doing this have thrown away their Umunri brotherhood bond. “How can supposed brothers kill one another? This is an abomination. Some of the survivors with bullet wounds are being conveyed to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi as we speak. Do you think that we will forget this easily?” Okonkwo asked.

“Another youth from Enugwu-Ukwu Boniface Okafor said that Enugwu-Ukwu youths are meeting to discuss their next line of action.

“A viral voice note from a supposed Nawfia indigene wondered why the ugly occurrences of Monday, 9th September, 2024, was not being shared on major Nawfia WhatsApp platforms. He wondered if this signified general support by Nawfia community for the gruesome murders of their Umunri kinsmen. The indivisible cautioned members of the community to be vigilant as he feared reprisals and asked those who can to leave the community immediately.”

However, in a statement issued to newsmen on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the State, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Culture / Anambra Farmer Wins N.5m For Harvesting Weightiest Yam by IzunnaOkafor(m): 8:10am On Sep 09
History was made in the sleepy town of Obeledu in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State as Mr. Kenneth Ifeakandu from Okofia village won five hundred thousand Naira for harvesting 95kg yam in the community.

Yam competition was part of the new yam festival for the 2024 edition of Obeledu's new yam festival.

Ifeakandu said that the half a million naira prize he won for producing the most heavy yam would be invested in his farm for greater yield next year.

“The prize money is a morale booster to invest more into agriculture, I will expand my scope and return here next year by the grace of God with super huge harvests to show my gratitude to God,” he said.

Earlier speaking, the President General (PG) of the Obeledu Progress Union, Engr. Ken Echendu said that agricultural show was deliberately built into the new yam festival to encourage people to go into farming.

“People have this impression that Anaocha has white land which is not fertile enough to support agriculture but we are changing that erroneous narrative.

“We are doing this to key into the administration of Governor Charles Soludo which has been encouraging people to go into farming. In Obeledu, we are encouraging our youths to go into agriculture,” he said.

He appreciated all the members of the Executive Council for their sacrifices towards making the community's new yam festival a huge success.

Engr. Echendu also appealed to the entire Obeledu people to continue to support his administration, even as he promised them that there are better days ahead.

Performing the traditional yam cutting to flag off the occasion, the Traditional Ruler of Obeledu, His Royal Highness, Igwe AC Oragwam (Ezeoranyelu III) thanked God for granting his community a bountiful harvest.

H.R.H. Igwe Oragwam urged Ndi-Obeledu and residents alike to continue to embrace peace which according to him is the bedrock for growth and development.

Ezeoranyelu III recalled with relish that yam competition which has gained international currency actually started in his community.

The Secretary of the Obeledu Media Department, Mr. Ikechukwu Okafor who is the Media Aide to the former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka attributed the success of the occasion to the harmonious relationship existing between the Obeledu people.

“People are happy, farms and other endeavors of the people are doing well, an indication that God is with us, 2024 edition of Obeledu new yam festival is particularly unique because of the level of participation of the people,” he noted.

He pointed out that, to ensure that the tempo is sustained, fertilizers were distributed to farmers at the occasion in anticipation of bumper harvest next year and beyond.

Mr. Okafor applauded the Obeledu monarch for giving yams and cash to the less privileged persons in the eight villages that constitute the town in celebration of the new yam festival.

The media aide to the former Aviation Minister expressed optimism that the current Executive Council of Obeledu would take the community to the promised land.

He, however, appealed to all and sundry to continue to support the paramount traditional ruler of the town and the leadership of Town Union.

The Anambra State Commisioner for Local Government Affairs and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Tonycollins Nwabuwanne who graced the occasion congratulated the entire people of the community for a successful outing.

He pointed out that he has continued to attend new yam festivals across the state to see how the communities are keying into the agricultural revolution of the administration of Governor Soludo.

Mr Nwabuwanne said as a matter of fact that the Obeledu community has done so very well and would be supported by the government to do more in the area of agriculture.

He urged other towns and communities in Anambra State to borrow a leaf from Obeledu.

Dignitaries at the occasion include the Senator Representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chief Sir Victor Umeh; the Transition Committee (TC) Chairman of Anaocha LGA, Hon Romanus Ibekwe; the President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Emeka Obegolu; as well as and traditional rulers from far and near.

The highlights of the 2024 Obeledu yam festival included church service, traditional dances, yam competition, display by masquerades amongst others.

Politics / DEFECTION: Moghalu Not Interested In Taking Over Senator Ubah's Position — Group by IzunnaOkafor(m): 11:56pm On Sep 03
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The recent resignation of ex-stalwart of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Chief George Moghalu from the party has been described as one that is unconnected with the replacement of the former senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, late Senator Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah.

A group, GNM Media Centre disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday, in reaction to the viral news and speculations that Chief Moghalu has interest in replacing late Senator Ubah at the National Assembly.

According to the group, the news is not only fake, but gossip from the gutters of crass journalism, as Chief Moghalu never, for one day, nursed feeling to contest for the position left by Senator Ubah.

The statement reads in part: “Our attention has been drawn to the fake news being spread around by an online medium to the effect that our principal, Chief Dr. George Moghalu is contesting for the position of Anambra South Senatorial District and to replace the late Senator, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah.

“While we do not wish to respond to gossip from the gutters of crass journalism, we deem it important to make a statement in order to realign the thoughts of the unsuspecting reading public who Anaedo online' irresponsible publication might have terribly misled.

“For the records and purpose of clarity, our principal Chief Dr. George Moghalu, like other citizens of Anambra South Senatorial District, is still pained and deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our beloved Senator, and his heart goes out to the family and loved ones.

“However, we hereby address the recent rumors and speculations about his intention to contest for the late Senator's seat which must have sprung from the writer's imagination.

“We categorically debunk these claims and assure the public that Chief Dr. George Moghalu has no interest in replacing our departed Senator.

“His main focus and passion remain fixed on serving our people as Governor, a position a lot of people strongly believe will enable him to make an enduring significant impact on our state's development, growth and prosperity; and he is seriously preparing to contest the 2025 Governorship election and not just to contest but to win the election by the grace of God.

“To this end, we urge Ndi Anambra and all people of goodwill to ignore the fake news as it is false and a mere speculative piece, sheer fabrication and brazen effort by the online newspaper to mislead the public. Our Principal's next line of action on the platform to be used to achieve his governorship ambition will be made known to the public soon.”

Politics / Crisis Unfolds In Awba Ofemili Community As Igwe Mmaduagwuna Faces Backlash by IzunnaOkafor(m): 12:45pm On Sep 02
By Karen James

In a community gripped by frustration and unrest, Igwe Ernest Mmaduagwuna of Awba Ofemili has sparked outrage with his actions, prompting residents to take to the streets in protest. The people of Awba Ofemili, unwilling to tolerate his excessive behavior any longer, marched to the Anambra State Government House to send a desperate plea for intervention to Governor Soludo. At the heart of the matter lies Igwe Mmaduagwuna's controversial decision to impose his chosen candidate, Mr. Fidelis Chinedu Mmegbene, as the community's President-General (PG).

Had Igwe Mmaduagwuna's choice emerged through a transparent town union election process, the people of Awba Ofemili might have accepted him as their PG. However, they are rebelling against his authority because he did not secure his position through a fair and transparent process. During the Awba Ofemili town union election, Hon. Ignatius Okafor, an influential APGA stalwart who effectively coordinated Prof. Soludo's 2021 governorship election campaign, emerged as the preferred candidate. Sensing defeat, Igwe Mmaduagwuna instigated Hon Thankgod, the official overseeing the election, to cancel the process. Assurances were given that a new election date would be communicated to the people.

However, under the cover of darkness, Igwe Mmaduagwuna and his cohorts conducted a sham election around 6 to 7 pm, unopposed, resulting in the emergence of Mr. Fidelis Chinedu Mmegbene as the PG of Awba Ofemili. This deceitful action by Igwe Mmaduagwuna and his allies is strongly condemned. Their actions have disrupted the peaceful coexistence of the community, leading the people of Awba Ofemili to threaten drastic measures.

In their quest for justice, the aggrieved community members embarked on a protest march to the government house, expressing their displeasure at Igwe Mmaduagwuna's unscrupulous behavior. The burning question remains: why is Igwe Mmaduagwuna so determined to impose his preferred candidate as the PG of Awba Ofemili? Why is he seemingly at odds with Hon Ignatius Okafor, who played a pivotal role in delivering Governor Soludo's 2021 election victory? The obvious answer is that Igwe Mmaduagwuna likely has skeletons in his closet, shying away from an independent-minded character like Hon Ignatius Okafor assuming the PG position.

However, Awba Ofemili residents are resolute in their stance. They firmly believe that for peace and sanity to be restored in their community, Igwe Mmaduagwuna must step down. They assert that his excessive behavior has been the root cause of the current crisis. Igwe Mmaduagwuna cannot continue to act as a law unto himself. It is imperative that the government intervene and reprimand his actions to restore order and harmony in Awba Ofemili. The people's demand for justice and accountability must not be overlooked.

In conclusion, the unfolding crisis in Awba Ofemili community underscores the importance of transparent, democratic processes in choosing community leaders. Igwe Mmaduagwuna's disregard for these principles has ignited tension and unrest. The community's demand for change and the need to rein in Igwe Mmaduagwuna's excesses are fundamental to restoring peace to Awba Ofemili. The government must heed their pleas for intervention and ensure justice prevails. Daalu nu (Thank you).

Education / Millions, Laptops, Others Won, As Igahaf's Scholarship Beneficiaries Hit 670 by IzunnaOkafor(m): 10:57pm On Aug 31
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The number of the beneficiaries of the I.G. Aguowo Health and Academic Foundation (IGAHAF) scholarship scheme, on Friday, hit six hundred and seventy (670), following the Foundation's award of full-time scholarship to additional 250 beneficiaries also drawn from different parts of the country.

The Executive Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Gloria Ugonnia Abanihe, announced this on behalf of the benefactor, at the 3rd Education/IGAHAF Seminar and 5th Phase of Scholarship Award ceremony, which held in Awka, the state capital.

According to her, the I.G. Aguowo Foundation, founded in August 2021, has a vision to bridge the educational gap and provide opportunities for talented and deserving students to achieve their dreams. This, she said, is based on the firm belief that education is the cornerstone of a prosperous and equitable society, as well as a key that unlocks the door to a brighter future at all level.

While noting that the Foundation has remained steadfast in pursuing this vision over the years, Mrs. Abanihe also cited some of the numerous health and educational projects and programs so far undertaken by the Foundation, with thousand beneficiaries scattered across the country; even as she reassured the Foundation's commitment to touching lives.

In a remark, the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, described the Foundation's activities as supportive of Governor Chukwuma Soludo's vision for the education sector of the State, adding that it is also in line with the Public Private Community Partnership (PPCP) Model of the Governor Soludo Administration, which advocates the government, the private sectors/individuals, and community joining hands to foster development.

She also recounted the various strides so far recorded in the education sector of the State under the current administration, adding that Anambra, today, has a ratio of 24 students to a teacher in secondary schools, and 21 pupils to a teacher in primary schools, among many other testimonies trailing and resulting from the Soludo's strides in education sector.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh commended the benefactor for seeing the need to invest in the lives of students, which she described as being valuably rich and letting humanity feel the impact of his wealth; even as she encouraged the Foundation to sustain the good work.

Earlier in an opening remarks, the Chairman of the Occasion, Engr. Dr. Innocent Akuvue lauded philanthropist Aguowo for his magnanimity and interest in touching lives, empowering humanity, and reviving hope.

He regretted that many wealthy men today, torment people around them and also make troubles with their wealth, while many others live unnecessary life of profligacy without adding any value to the society and people around them. He, however, commended Aguowo for his right choice of impacting lives and for the various benefits the society and humanity have drawn through his philanthropy; while also urging others to emulate him.

In a Keynote Speech, Barr. Mrs Nwando Obiano, PhD, who was a school teacher to the benefactor, lauded his exceptionality, urging the beneficiaries to also show exceptionality.

She condemned the fact that many people today are ingrate, while some others prefer to be over-dependent on their helpers. She, however, charged the beneficiaries to always be grateful and always pray for the benefactor; while also charging them to be serious in their studies, make the foundation proud, acquire relevant skills in addition to their studies. She further aspire them shun distractions and always aspire to excel in life and replicate same gesture as Aguowo has offered to them to others in the nearest future.

In a vote of thanks, the benefactor, Chief Aguowo said his philanthropy was a dream he had had nurtured since his school days, and expressed his gladness that the dream has come to reality. He recalled that he also came from a poor background and have understood what it means to experience severe hardship, which made him to resolve to support and lift others and revive hope with his God-given wealth.

“So, what I'm doing is what I like doing. And, anybody who tries to discourage me from doing that will cease to be my friend,” he said.

Chief Aguowo, while attesting that Nigeria, and Anambra State in particular, are doing well educationally, judging from the various trophies their students have been clinching, both at the national and international levels, among other indices; however, observed that the government alone cannot sustain this upward rise, hence the need for private sector's involvement as his Foundation is doing, all in the spirit of the PPCP model and building a better society.

In an interview with newsmen, a philanthropist and former governorship aspirant in Anambra State, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, who said Aguowo's gesture represents service to humanity and aligns with the advocacy of the Rotary Club Int'l, also emphasized that everyone should always endeavour to impact others' lives and be beneficial to the society in one way or the other.

Engr. Onunkwo also shared his thoughts about the new educational policy that pegged a minimum age for every higher institution aspirant, criticizing it for its negative implications; as, according to him, such a thing can make an aspiring student lose interest in education and begin to indulge in illegalities or get cut up by the trending get rich quick syndrome when he or she is waiting to attain the age to gain admission.

While recalling that he and his sister both graduated at the age of 19 and are all scholars today, the philanthropist also advised the federal government to revisit and reconsider the policy, to ensure it doesn't deprive people of their educational rights or breed illegalities in the society.

The well-attended event with participants drawn from different parts of the country, was also graced by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor; the Anambra State Head of Service, Barr. Mrs. Theodora Igwegbe; the Traditional Ruler of Nibo, H.R.H. Michael Ngene (Ezeike Nibo), and members of the Imperial Club, among other dignitaries. It also featured the presentation of cash prizes running into millions of naira and 2024 laptops to some exceptional students and other outstanding individuals, by the IGAHAF Foundation, in addition to 250 certificates presented to the new beneficiaries of the Foundation's scholarship scheme.

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

A metal scrap dealer (popularly known as Iron Condemn), Mr. Chinonso Ezekiel Nwaebonyi has been arrested in Anambra State for defiling his neighbour's seven-year-old child in Awka, the capital city of the state.

Aged 30, the suspect, who hails from Ebonyi State was said to have committed the crime no fewer than five times before her parents eventually found out.

It was gathered that the suspect usually commits this beside the fence at the back of their compound.

Confirming this in a statement issued to newsmen on Thursday, Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, the Spokesperson of the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, said the defiled girl and her twin brother were born to their parents after ten years of childless, adding that the suspect usually commits the crime on Mondays and Tuesdays when they go to the compound to play.

The statement reads in part: “According to the 7-year-old, she, alongside her twin brother, usually goes over to the next compound to play since the holiday started before the suspect started defiling her. She stated that the suspect has had carnal knowledge of her for about 5 times of which was always on Mondays and Tuesdays.

“The mother of the survivor said she got to know one of the days she came back from work to bathe her kids and discovered that her daughter's private region was swollen.

“On enquiry, she was briefed of what had been going on, and she quickly went to the next compound to complain to the guardians of the suspect after which she took her daughter to a pharmacy before coming to the Ministry.

“Meanwhile, the suspect, who had earlier denied the allegation, later confessed to committing the said crime but only once.

“According to the 30-year-old, he never forced the girl but only asked her to raise her clothes and lie down on the ground.

“It is important to note that the 7-year-old survivor and her twin brother were born to her parents after ten years of childlessness.”

Events / Anambra OGP Recounts Successes Of SAP 1, Validates SAP 2 by IzunnaOkafor(m): 10:55pm On Aug 28
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Open Government Partnership (OGP), Anambra State, has commended the state government over the successes recorded in the first State Action Plan (SAP 1)  in the state.

The group gave the commendation during a workshop which held on Wednesday in Awka, the state capital, where they also finalized and validated the second State Action Plan (SAP 2).

This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that, while OGP is an international organization where the civil society organisations, citizens, and other partners work together with government to promote transparency, accountability, inclusiveness and responsiveness in governance; State Action Plans (SAP) outline specific time-bound commitments and actions that the government intends to undertake to enhance transparency, increase public participation, improve accountability, and leverage technology for better governance.

It was also gathered that, while Anambra was among the first state in southern Nigeria to sign into OGP in 2017, shortly after it was adopted by Nigeria in 2016; the state launched its first SAP in 2018, one year after she adopted it.

The Anambra State OGP SAP 2, which has a timeframe of 2024-2026, focuses on four thematic areas — Fiscal Transparency, Citizen Engagement, Improved Service Delivery, Climate Change & Environment — with a total of seven key commitments, which are the specific initiatives that the state government is to work on as part of its participation in the OGP.

Speaking at the event, a Co-chair of OGP in Anambra, Prince Chris Azor highlighted some of the successes and testimonies that trailed the implementation of SAP 1 in the state, including the commencement of open and participatory budget system, e-procurement, creation of Disability Rights Commission and Disability laws, as well as improved transparency level, among others.

While hailing the state for this milestone, he also added that, despite these, there is still need for more improvement in some other key areas of interest and public concerns, hence the creation of the SAP 2 as a follow-up to SAP 1.

“As it is today, Anambra State has made significant strides in transparency and governance, earning recognition as the best state in the country for budget transparency this year. The state has adopted a participatory approach to budgeting and has moved its procurement processes online, including e-procurement, ensuring fair, merit-based contract awards.

“Additionally, the state has implemented a disability law and established a disability commission, improving inclusivity. Public finance management has also seen greater discipline due to strengthened anti-corruption measures and the introduction of operational access to criminal justice law, all part of the reforms under the Open Government Partnership (OGP). These reforms have transformed Anambra's governance, with updated laws and improved accountability across all sectors.

“So, we have done quite much, but are we there yet? No. That is why we are moving to SAP 2, so that all those things we were not able to accomplish, we will make sure we accomplish them,” Azor said.

In an interview with newsmen, the OGP Focal Person in Anambra State and Senior Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Budget and Economic Planning, Ogochukwu Orji, who shed more light on the state's performance in the implementation of the OGP SAP 1, attested that Anambra has indeed come a long way.

While noting that the finalization and validation of SAP 2 were preceded by many activities and technical sessions, she explained that the Plan would still pass through some more processes before it becomes a public document.

Citing some more specific instances of the impacts and reflections of the SAP 1 in the governance system and different sectors of the state; Orji further expressed optimism that the newly-validated SAP 2 would be more optimally implemented and would also augment and build on the successes of the first SAP, all with the central aim of improving transparency, accountability, inclusiveness and responsiveness in governance.

In a goodwill message, the representative of the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), which is a key partner in OGP, Juliet Chiluwe, who is the Chief of UNICEF Enugu Field Office, congratulated the Anambra State OGP for their milestones so far, especially in the articulation and validation of the SAP 2, while also reassuring of the agency's eagerness to partner and contribute to the implementation of the action plan.

“We are most appreciative of the states commitment and determination to deepen efforts towards sustainable governance reforms through the OGP. The action plan, if finalized, should adequately take into consideration the plight and participation of children, women, and the vulnerable population in the state.

“UNICEF will continue to support the state on initiatives and interventions that embodies the principles of human rights, accountability, fairness, and equity especially to women and children. We want to congratulate the state on this process and are eager to partner and contribute to the implementation of this action plan,” she said.

In a vote of thanks, the State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Chinyere Nwabachili, commended all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the first State Action Plan (SAP 1) and the successful validation of SAP 2; while also hailing the general commitment and collaborative efforts of the OGP team in advancing governance reforms in  Anambra.

While acknowledging that the validation of SAP 2 marks a new chapter in this advancement, Mrs. Nwabachili further emphasized that the government of Anambra State, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, is fully committed to sustaining and expanding the gains made through SAP 1; even as she also called for continuous collaboration, innovation, and dedication to ensure that the new action plan is mostly successfully implemented within the targeted timeframe.

The event, which featured thoughtful deliberations on the second SAP, was attended by participants drawn from various governmental and non-government organisations, including the Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Finance, Mr. Achor J.C.; a Development Expert from Abuja, Sir Dr. Agabaidu Jideani, the Chairman of the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, Barr. Chuks Ezewuzie; among others.

Validation and official adoption of the second State Action Plan by the Anambra OGP members formed the high point of the event.

Politics / Anambra Govt Gives Reasons For Sealing Oppositions' Offices In Awka by IzunnaOkafor(m): 7:50pm On Aug 27
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Anambra state government has revealed the reason behind the sealing of some political parties' offices in Awka, the state capital.

Recall that the office of the Edozie Njoku-led faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), that of the Labour Party (LP), and that of the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Victor Umeh —all located inside the Udoka Housing Estate in Awka, were reportedly sealed on Tuesday by the Anambra State government.

While some reports allege that the said seal-off was because the Udoka Housing Estate is a residential area, and not a business area; some others also allege that the act was politically motivated.

However, when this reporter contacted him, the Managing Director of the Anambra State Housing Development Corporation, Hon. Chike Anyaonu, confirmed that the seal-off was effected by the Corporation, as part of the agency's enforcement against the misuse of government's property by allottees.

According to him, the sealed property were being used for commercial purposes instead of residential for which they were  meant.

This, he said, continued, despite the attempts by the Corporation to make the people revert to the use of the property for residential purpose for which they were approved and alloted; hence, the agency's move to seal them off.

“Today, August 27, 2024, the Anambra State Housing Development Corporation sealed some property being used against the purpose for which they approved at the Udoka Housing Estate. The affected property were being used for commercial purposes instead of residential for which they were  meant for.

“The Corporation was forced to embark on the present exercise after several failed attempts to have owners/allottees of the properties revert to the use for which the development approvals were given to them.

“The Corporation is hereby issuing the last warning to revoke any properties violating the terms and conditions guiding development of properties in all her estates which is not limited to Udoka Housing Estate,” Hon. Anyaonu said in a text message to this reporter.

As at the time of filing this report, the ASHDC Boss was yet to respond to this reporter's follow-up questions of whether or not the sealed property would be unsealed, when, and on what condition.

Earlier speaking in a telephone interview with this reporter, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo; Mr. Ejimofor Opara, the Publicity Secretary of the Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa-led APGA faction and media aide to the Governor, said they were not aware of the incident.

The duo also dismissed the speculation and allegation by some people who claim that the seal-off has some political undertones.

Members and some key officers of the political parties whose offices were affected, have also condemned and voiced out their grievances and discontent against the act, stressing that they were not given any notice or reminder prior to the seal-off, while also vowing to take necessary actions.

Crime / Armed Thugs Still Invading Our Land Despite Court Judgments, Mbanano Tell Soludo by IzunnaOkafor(m): 3:10pm On Aug 27
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The people of Mbanano in Enugwu-Agidi community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State have called for the urgent intervention of the state government over the alleged invasion of their ancestral lands by group of notorious land grabbers.

Mbanano, which is made up of four villages in Enugwu-Agidi, made the call in a press conference held on Monday at the palace of late H.R.H. Igwe D.O. Ikeanyi, Okpalariam II of Enugwu-Agidi, where they also raised an alarm over the unrestrained contempt of court being perpetrated by the said notorious land grabbers.

The press conference was preceded by a well-attended meeting that attracted members and leaders of the four villages that make up Mbanano community/zone —Achalla, Iruobieli, Igbollo, and Ifite villages —which are the villages whose portions of land are in the area being invaded and grabbed.

Addressing newsmen shortly after a meeting, the Chairman of Land Committee, Ozo Fred Onubuogu went memory lane to explain that the land tussle dates back to 1938 (86 years ago) when the people of Ezinano community in Awka started invading their lands, a case, he said, eventually lingered till 1954 when the West African Court of Appeal (WACA) delivered a landmark judgment in favour of Mbanano Enugwu-Agidi as the rightful owners of the land.

According to him, several years after their 1954 court victory, the people of Ezinano Awka surfaced again and filed another suit at a High Court, challenging the Mbanano's ownership of the land again. The ruling on this new suit, he said, was given on October 23, 2013, when the High Court, in its judgment, again reaffirmed Mbanano as the rightful owners of the land, upholding and validating the earlier judgment by WACA.

Hon. Onubuogu noted that both before and after the landmark 1954 judgment by the West African Court of Appeal (WACA) and the succeeding judgment of the Nnewi High Court in 2013 which are all in favour of the Mbanano community; this said land had been in the custody of the Mbanano villagers, who peacefully utilize it for various economic activities, including farming, palm wine tapping, and other agrarian endeavours.

He, however, alleged that the tranquility of the area was disrupted sometime in 2018 when some elements from the Ezinano community in Awka, led by one Ozo Jeff Nweke, surfaced from nowhere and began to re-challenge the legitimacy of the Mbanano community's ownership of the land, now in a brutal, destructive and physically confrontational way.

“Despite these unequivocal rulings, Ozo Jeff Nweke and his cohorts refused to abide by the law, and have resorted to brazen acts of lawlessness,” he alleged.

Continuing, he said the Ezinano community Awka, in 2018, went further to appeal the 2013 judgment of the High Court. He, however, added that even when the appeal was yet to be heard by the Court, Ozo Nweke and his cohorts from Ezinano Awka began a campaign of intimidation, forcibly entering the disputed land, including the Trans-Obibia Layout—an area already gazetted by the Anambra State Government for Enugwu-Agidi.

According to Onubuogu, Ozo Nweke and his armed men removed government-installed beacons, destroyed property, and terrorized the local populace, rendering them unable to access their land.

He said that, in pursuance of the case, Ezinano community also lost woefully in their appeal, when the Appeal Court, on June 11, 2020, also declared Mbanano people the rightful owners of the land in another landmark victory, and further issued an order restraining Ozo Nweke and his cohorts from Ezinano Awka from entering the land.

Hon. Onubuogu, however, expressed shock that despite all these court judgments and the court order, Nweke and his cohorts have continued to invade their lands with armed thugs, even to the point that many Mbanano villagers, including women, who own farmlands in the area have repeatedly escaped death with severe injuries, as a result of deadly attacks launched on them and the intimidations they were subjected to by the said armed thugs who were allegedly engaged and stationed inside the bushes by Nweke, and who usually confront the villagers whenever they go to check on their farmlands and economic trees in the area.

“Nweke's actions are not just a flagrant violation of the law, but also a direct threat to the peace and security of our community,” Onubuogu lamented, adding that the area has consequently been made unaccessible to its rightfully owners —the Mbanano people.

He also recounted the ordeal of the Leader of the Community's Forest Guard and Chairman of Achalla village (one of the villages that make up Mbanano Enugwu-Agidi), Mr. Obinna Okoyeocha, who was reportedly beaten to stupor right inside the bush in the area recently, when he and few persons went to check on their farmlands in the area, only to be confronted by a group of heavily-armed thugs, many of whom were also alleged to be members of Nweke's private security outfit.

“They started shooting sporadically, and some of the men escaped, and they captured Chief Okoyeocha and few other persons, stripped them naked, tortured them to near death, dispossessed them of their motorcycles and phones, including the belongings abandoned by those who narrowly escaped.

“And after that, they bundled them to the B Division, Awka, labelling them as criminals that they captured. This is what our people have been passing through in our own land in the hands of these people, despite the several court judgments upholding our ownership of the land. You can imagine such a gross contempt of court!” he decried, while also harping on the need for the urgent intervention of the government.

Contributing, another elder and Vice Chairman of Mbanano Community, Chief Peter Onuekwusi who corroborated the narrative by Hon. Onubuogu, regretted that despite all their efforts to get the intervention of the relevant authorities, much has not been done, while the hoodlums continue to unleash mayhem on the innocent people of Mbanano whenever they go to check on their farmlands. He also lamented that the area has become a danger zone and hideouts for criminal activities due to its inaccessibility to people, even as the people no longer have where to farm.

“Our people have been forced to endure physical assaults, threats, intimidations and the constant fear of violence. Women, who previously engaged in farming on the disputed land, can no longer go about their activities safely.

“Despite our numerous reports to the authorities, much has not been done to curb these illegal activities.

“The police, at various points, had arrested some of the armed men involved in this, but also mysteriously released them in the dead of night, only for them to return and continue their reign of terror and attacking police who went to the area, just few hours after their release,” he recounted.

Continuing, he alleged that the situation reached a boiling point that period, when, during a police operation to investigate the illegal activities, armed men associated with Nweke, shot and wounded several police officers, further escalating the conflict.

It was alleged that, after that encounter, Nweke sponsored a nude protest in Awka against the Anambra State Police Command, with several allegations against the police.

It was, however, gathered that, after the incidents, Nweke was eventually arrested sometime in November 2023 by the police, who accused him of sponsoring a nude protest against the police, with a view to evading criminal charges against him. He was also accused of illegal possession of forearms, land grabbing, shooting of police operatives and terrorism. He, however, allegedly returned from detention moments later and forged ahead with his activities, despite reportedly having a pending court case at the High Court over the allegations that led to his arrest by police.

He was said to have unbridledly continued and sustained his activities in the disputed land since then, till date; hence the call by the Mbanano community for government's urgent intervention, to avoid further escalation of the matter to the point where people would resort to taking the laws into their hands.

This notwithstanding, Chief Onuekwusi revealed that a group of persons from Ezinano Awka, led by Nweke, recently came to Mbanano community and initiated an illegal negotiation with some excommunicated indigenes and co-land grabbers from the Mbanano community, claiming that they want to give peace a chance in the age-old land tussle by, hence, proposing that the disputed land be divided into two for the two parties (Ezinano and Mbanano), as a way to end the crisis.

Speaking through Chief Onuekwusi, the people of Mabanano community, during the press conference on Monday, however, unanimously opposed and dissociated themselves from the “so-called peace negotiation with Ezinano”. They emphatically maintained that they (Mbanano) would never share their ancestral lands with anyone, let alone someone or a group that had dragged them to courts several times over the same land and lost in all, and then resorted to causing terror, and sponsoring physical attacks and different forms molestations against them who are the rightful owners of the land.

According to them, they only need their land and full access into it, without any form of interest in any peace deal that is contrary to that or involves sharing their ancestral lands with anyone. They also warned that anyone or group going into any such unauthorized negotiation with the name of Mbanano Community is on his own and doing so at his own risk and detriment.

Concluding, the Mbanano community indigenes who attended the event, comprising the men, the women and the youths, unanimously called for the urgent intervention of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led Anambra State government on the matter, to ensure that the rule of law is vehemently upheld, to prevent further breach of peace, law and order in Mbanano Enugwu-Agidi by group of legally-defeated intruders and obstinate land grabbers.

“It is as if we are being left to fend for ourselves in a situation that could easily escalate into a full-blown communal war,” Chief Onuekwusi warned.

“We are law-abiding citizens and have done everything by the book, yet the government appears indifferent to our plight,” he stated.

The community leader expressed fears that if the situation continues unchecked, it could lead to a total breakdown of law and order in the area. He emphasized that the Mbanano community has no intention of engaging in any form of illegal or violent retaliation, but that they are growing increasingly desperate for government intervention to restore peace and uphold the rule of law.

Chief Onuekwusi also highlighted the broader implications of the conflict and looming crisis, pointing out that the Mbanano community’s land is not only vital for their livelihoods but also holds significant cultural and historical importance, as both their ancestral shrines and burial graves some of their loved ones and relatives, and other such historical monuments and items of significant cultural values to Mbanano are also situated in lands, which are now being desecrated by the ongoing encroachments by intruders.

“The courts have consistently given us victory because the evidence of our ownership of the land is irrefutable. Yet, we are being punished for our patience and faith in the legal system. How long can we continue to endure this injustice?” he wondered.

“It is high time the government came in and took the necessary actions to stop these illegalities,” he reiterated, wondering why one person or group could be acting as if they are greater than the government, even to the extent of blatantly disobeying court orders and judgments.

When this reporter, Izunna Okafor, contacted him for his reaction, Ozo Nweke, who was accused as a principal actor in the land tussle, declined to comment on the allegations and claims by the people of Mbanano, stressing that he would not say anything until he sees the allegations.

He, however, in the same telephone interview, later claimed that “the people are liars”, adding that “they should go to court.”

Politics / In Anambra, SSM Battles Hunger Through Empowering Women For Dry Season Farming by IzunnaOkafor(m): 12:47am On Aug 26
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

Dry season farming has been described as a crucial tool for economic empowerment, poverty reduction, and food security, particularly in rural areas where farming is the primary source of livelihood.

The Nnewi South Coordinator of the Soludo Solution Movement (SSM), Mr. Kamstan Nwigbo, declared this at a one-day event organized by the group to empower rural women through the promotion of dry season farming.

Held on Sunday at the Secretariat Complex of the Nnewi South Local Government Headquarters, Ukpor, the well-attended event that drew over five thousand participants from the ten communities in the local government, also attracted top government functionaries from the local government area and beyond.

Addressing the participants, the Convener of the occasion, Mr. Nwigbo, said the aim of the occasion was to equip rural women with the necessary knowledge and resources to engage in dry season farming, which is not only beneficial for food production but also serves as a means to increase their income and improve their standard of living.

Mr. Nwigbo, who hailed the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for showing special interest in agriculture, highlighted the various things the Solution Government has so far done in agriculture in the state, including his recent distribution of over one million free seedlings to Ndị Anambra.

Commending the Governor, he further urged the people to support and key into the agricultural initiative of the Solution Government, especially by engaging in year-round farming, to be among the key beneficiaries of the vision and reap its numerous benefits. He said the event was part of the SSM's moves and strategies to replicate and domesticate the Governor's agricultural revolutionary vision in Nnewi South, empower and reawaken the people's consciousness and embracement of agriculture as the way to go, especially in the face of the economic realities in the country.

“Everyone should embrace farming, both in the rainy season and dry season; it is the way to go, including backyard farming (Ugbo Azụ Ụlọ),” he advised.

Mr. Nwigbo, who cited many ex-Nigerian Presidents and other top government functionaries who are farmers, also advocated and shared many insights into dry season farming and its benefits, while also urging the participants to embrace and key into this Soludo-influenced vision due to its numerous benefits. He further assured that the Soludo Solution Movement would sustain the advocacy and empowerment by periodically organizing such events from time to time and providing them with every necessary support and assistance needed to enable the initiative to thrive beyond expectations.

Earlier, delivering a lecture on the theme of the event — “Empowering Rural Women Through Dry Season Backyard Farming: Means for Attacking Rural Poverty” — the Keynote Speaker at the event, Prof. Frank Anaeto of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, enlightened the participants on the need for dry season farming, how to practice it, as well as the various types of crops that have greater chances of survival and germination in the dry season, such as okra, maize, garden egg, pepper, tomatoes, sweet potato, cassava, yam, green, pawpaw, among others.

According to him, women are key actors in fighting poverty and ensuring family's survival and sustainability in every society; hence the well-thought-out move to empower and better equip them for these.

According to him, such agricultural-related empowerment of women leads to improved livelihood, food security, improved health and wellbeing, improved local economy, poverty reduction, access to fresh farm produce, among other numerous benefits.

Achieving this, he said, requires and necessitates providing an enabling environment for the women, which he further charged the organizers of the event and the government to help provide, so that the women can effectively utilize and make progress with the empowerment being given to them.

While describing the event as auspicious in the face of the present economic realities in the country, he appreciated the organizers for the job well done, and further joined his voice to laud Governor Soludo, whom he described as a farmer-friendly Governor who has shown unquantifiable interest in agriculture. He urged the Governor to sustain the good work and further called on the women to key into the vision.

In a remark, the National Convener of the Soludo Solution Movement and Chief Host of the event, Chief Jude Umunnakwe Obiora, who was wowed by the population of the crowd at the event, commended the organizers for their foresight and impacts manifested through their activities.

Chief Obiora, who is the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Political Mobilization, also attested that the grassroots empowerment program came at the most appropriate time and aligns with the vision of the Soludo Administration at the state level, given its potential to improve the welfare of the masses at the grassroots and beyond while also bringing solutions to many challenges currently bedeviling the masses.

Contributing, the Special Guest of Honour and Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Political Matters, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, represented by Hon. Obiajulu Nwoye, congratulated the people of Nnewi South on the return of calmness and airtight security of lives and property in the area, which he attributed to the Soludo-led Anambra State Government. He also advised Ndị Nnewi South not to be deceived by anyone in the forthcoming elections in the state, especially the September 28 local government elections, adding that voting for the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) is one of the surest ways they can appreciate, support, and reciprocate the good deeds of the Governor for the people of the local government.

In his goodwill message, the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment and former Chairman of Nnewi Local Government Area, Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu, represented by Hon. Comrade Okwuchukwu Udegbe, commended the Soludo Solution Movement Nnewi South for their dedication to community empowerment and added that their efforts were truly reflective of the Governor's vision for an economically empowered state.

While noting that the empowerment of rural women is pivotal to the socio-economic transformation of the people at the grassroots, he also urged the participants to put into practice all they learned at the event in order to maximize the benefits and contribute more significantly in hunger reduction.

The event also featured an interactive session with the participants, as well as the distribution of some potted breadfruit seedlings, hybrid maize seedlings, and hybrid okra seedlings to the participants, courtesy of the Soludo Solution Movement, Nnewi South.

In their votes of thanks, the Women Leader of the Soludo Solution Movement in Nnewi South, Mrs. Nkoli Okafor, and some other participants at the event, including Mrs. Nkechi Ndubuisi, expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the organizers, while also assuring that they would make good use of the seedlings. They also reassured their support for the Soludo-led APGA government in Anambra State, further joining their voices to advocate the embracement of agriculture as one of the surest ways to overcome poverty and gain financial stability.

Also in attendance at the event were the National Woman Leader of the Soludo Solution Movement, Hon. Mrs. Ify Dike; as well as an APGA Stakeholder in the area, Chief Izuchukwu Anene, among others.

The symbolic distribution of the seedlings to the participants formed the high point of the event.

Politics / Anambra Govt Revamps Moribund Solar-powered Borehole In Anaku by IzunnaOkafor(m): 6:22pm On Aug 23
By Azuka Offor

The breath of the Solution Effect has yet blown upon another Anambra community, Anaku, in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State, as the community received a newly completed solar-powered borehole from the Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration in the State.

The solar-powered borehole, described as another Solution Touch, is part of the numerous testimonials that trail the ongoing resuscitation of virtually all the moribund water schemes across the entire state, being championed through the Commissioner Julius Chukwuemeka-headed Ministry of Power and Water Resources.

Located at the Anaku Central Primary School, the now fully-functional borehole was handed over to the school and the entire community over the week by officials of the Ministry.

Politics / South East Development Commission: Igwe Ben Emeka Advises Tinubu by IzunnaOkafor(m): 9:35am On Aug 22
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Traditional Ruler of Umueri in Anambra East Local Government Area, Igwe Dr. Ben Emeka (Oke-Ebo Umueri II) has raised some important concerns about the recently passed South East Development Commission (SEDC) aimed at driving the developmental wheel of the Southeastern region.

Recall that the SEDC Bill was recently passed by the National Assembly, followed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's assent to it.

Speaking with newsmen recently in Awka, Igwe Emeka (JP) commended the National Assembly and President Tinubu for creating and signing the Bill, which marks the creation of a body aimed at reconstructing and rehabilitating infrastructure in the five Southeastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo.

The monarch expressed optimism that the Commission has the potential to address the long-standing grievances from the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War, which ended over 50 years ago; adding that its establishment is a critical step towards the socio-economic revitalization of the Southeast region, which has faced marginalization since the end of the Civil War in 1970.

According to him, the Commission will utilize funds from the Federation Account to address infrastructural deficits and also tackle environmental challenges like erosion, which has plagued the region for decades.

The monarch, however, expressed concerns about the potential for corruption by some selfish and greedy elements to undermine the Commission's sincere objectives for the region, as is the case with many public institutions and other similar creations.

He, therefore, advised and called on President Tinubu to ensure the appointment of God-fearing, honest, and selfless individuals with integrity to head the Commission, stressing that only with integrity at the helm can the Commission succeed in achieving its intended goals. The establishment of the SEDC, he noted, could be a healing process for the Igbos if managed transparently, effectively, and with proper accountability, without giving any room for corruption.

Igwe Emeka, a first-class monarch and philanthropist extraordinaire who doubles as the Executive Chairman of the New Idea Construction Company Limited, also urged federal lawmakers, particularly those representing the region, to work closely with other stakeholders to watch over and ensure that the Commission's activities align with the region's developmental needs. He also advised them to synergetically look towards addressing critical issues and unique challenges faced by the region, such as insecurity, erosion menace, and others that continue to devastate many parts of the region.

In addition to his concerns, Igwe Emeka further advocated the need for the federal government to create a more enabling environment for industrialization across Nigeria, particularly in the Southeast. He advocated that priority attention be given to those things that are crucial for attracting investments, boosting economic activities at any level, and improving the living standard and the general welfare of the masses, in the face of the present economic realities in the country.

Recall that the establishment of the SEDC has been widely lauded by various stakeholders, including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who described it as a significant step towards addressing the neglect long suffered by the Southeast region.

Howbeit, with the Commission now established, all eyes are on how it will be implemented and whether it will indeed bring the long-desired transformation and sustainable development craved by the region.

Politics / ANSIEC, IPAC Rob Minds Ahead Anambra LG Election by IzunnaOkafor(m): 12:47am On Aug 21
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

In furtherance of its bid to ensure a credible and widely accepted local government election in Anambra State, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), on Tuesday, engaged in an extensive deliberation with the members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the State.

Held at the Commission’s headquarters in Awka, the interactive session, which drew State Chairmen and Secretaries of the various political parties, centered on the preparation and key concerns about the proposed September 28, 2024, local government election in the state.

ANSIEC had recently announced the timetable and schedule of activities for the election, after which it embarked on engagements with relevant stakeholders and groups in the state, one of which is the IPAC.

Addressing the gathering, the Chairperson of ANSIEC and Anambra State Electoral Officer, Magistrate Genevieve Osakwe, reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to delivering a free, fair, and transparent election that reflects the true will of the people of Anambra State.

Magistrate Osakwe, who acknowledged the significance of the upcoming election, also noted that the success of the election is not only the responsibility of ANSIEC but also that of all political parties and stakeholders involved.

“We, at ANSIEC, are determined to ensure that this election is conducted in the most transparent manner possible, in full compliance with the legal frameworks guiding electoral processes in Nigeria,” she stated, while also stressing that the Commission's collaboration with the IPAC is critical to the success of the entire electoral process.

However, the interactive session was not without commendation, expression of what many described as “perceived irregularities”, as well as outpouring of hearts by some members of IPAC on some of the steps so far taken by ANSIEC in its preparation for the election.

In their separate remarks, some IPAC members, including the State Chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Chigozie Igwe, and his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Chief Basil Ejidike expressed their concerns over what they described as an absence of an updated voters’ register in the state for the conduct of the election, as well as the inadequate time for the parties to prepare for the election.

Contributing, the State Secretary of the Labour Party, Barr. Okoli Akirika, who emphasized that what is worth doing is worth doing well, also cited some legal provisions relevant to the concerns raised by the IPAC members.

On his own part, the State Chairman of the Boot Party, Mr. Okeke Chika Jerry, who highlighted the broader implications of electoral irregularities on national security, said the electoral commission must do everything possible to conduct an election that is not only credible but also perceived as such by the majority.

These concerns notwithstanding, various members of IPAC expressed confidence in the capabilities of the ANSIEC Chairperson and her team to deliver, urging them to take swift action to address the concerns in the interest of a successful election; while also assuring to take part in the election, upon the addressing of their concerns.

Earlier speaking, the State Chairman of APGA, Barr. Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, who commended the ANSIEC for the giant steps so far taken in the preparation for the election, said that APGA is ready for the September 28 poll and would diligently follow the process, as stipulated in the election timetable and schedule of activities released by INEC.

While noting that APGA's readiness is not unconnected with the efficiency and effectiveness of the party's internal operational mechanisms; Barr. Obi-Okoye, who also spoke in an interview with newsmen, said some of the activities contained in the ANSIEC timetable are affairs that are to be internally handled or carried out by the respective political parties. He, therefore, wondered why some political parties should blame or crucify ANSIEC because they don't have a functional internal operational mechanism as a party to swiftly handle such affairs within the given time.

The Anambra APC Chairman also frowned against what he described as arguing legal matters in public gatherings while there are courts, adding that anyone or political party who feels that the whole or any of the steps and processes being taken by the ANSIEC towards the election is contrary to the provisions of the law should go to court to challenge same.

Responding to the expressed concerns, the ANSIEC Chairperson, Magistrate Osakwe, who said the Commission had always consulted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant sections of the laws in every relevant step they take towards the election, assured that the ANSIEC will receive a certified true copy of the voter register for the election from INEC in one or two days time.

Magistrate Osakwe, who also made some clarifications on some other views and concerns raised by the various political parties, however, assured to further review them, and revert to the IPAC where necessary, in line with the Commission's avowed commitment to give Ndị Anambra the best local government election ever.

In his vote of thanks, the IPAC Chairman in Anambra State and State Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Comrade Uche Ugwoji commended ANSIEC for its proactive approach in engaging political parties and other stakeholders ahead of the proposed election and for acknowledging the concerns expressed.

While noting that every political party in the state is willing to participate in the election; he also emphasized the IPAC's readiness to work with the Commission to actualize its vision of conducting a free and fair local government election in the state, but, however urged that the raised concerns be reviewed and addressed.

Comrade Ugwoji, who noted the need for ANSIEC to maintain a continuous dialogue with IPAC and other relevant stakeholders, further expressed optimism that, with such collective efforts, the upcoming election would set a new standard for local government elections in Anambra state.

Also in attendance at the forum were other members of the ANSIEC Board, including Sir Chinedu Anthony Nnalue, Mrs. Bernardine Obande FCA, Barr. Osita Cyril Igbokwe, Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh, and Mr. John Emeka Okeke.
