Nigeria has secured sufficient fertilizer supplies for the 2026 wet farming season and saved about ₦61.58 billion through early procurement of raw materials, despite growing global disruptions affecting fertilizer markets. PFI NPK Limited, the implementation vehicle for the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative under the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), said it had secured the country’s fertilizer supply months ahead of the planting season, shielding farmers from potential shortages and price hikes. According to the company’s 2026 first-quarter procurement records, nine vessels carrying 407,304 metric tonnes of fertilizer raw materials were secured. Combined with existing stock, a total of 534,219 metric tonnes is available for NPK fertilizer production nationwide. The company said the strategy yielded savings of $43.99 million, equivalent to approximately ₦61.58 billion, compared with current international market prices. As of mid-April 2026, more than 323,109 metric tonnes of raw materials had been supplied to blending plants across the country, while over 198,264 metric tonnes had already been distributed ahead of peak planting activities. Director of PFI NPK Limited, Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, said the early procurement decision was aimed at protecting Nigeria from external market shocks. “We took a deliberate decision to move early by securing supply, locking in pricing, and putting the necessary financial arrangements in place. That foresight has ensured Nigeria is not exposed to the disruptions currently affecting global fertilizer markets,” he said. Dr. Takang added that the intervention was focused on ensuring farmers have access to fertilizer at affordable prices when needed. PFI NPK supplies raw materials to 94 blending plants registered under the Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN), supporting local fertilizer production and strengthening food security efforts across the country. By Nura Olamilekan The rescue efforts for the abducted students in Oyo State have now become a race against time, with multiple layers of government and security institutions mobilizing every available resource to bring the children home safely. Across command centers, forests, and intelligence units, the atmosphere remains tense but determined, as authorities push relentlessly to ensure the victims return alive to their anxious families. The Federal Government has directed all relevant security and intelligence agencies to deploy the full weight of their operational capabilities toward the rescue mission, while also ensuring that those behind the attack are identified, tracked, and brought to justice. The directive signals the seriousness attached to the incident and the commitment to preventing such tragedies from becoming normalized. Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has also assured the public that the state government is exploring every possible avenue to secure the release of the students. According to the governor, the administration is not limiting itself to conventional security measures alone, but is also maintaining communication channels aimed at protecting the lives of the victims and facilitating their safe return. At the operational level, the Chief of Defence Staff has reportedly ordered the deployment of specialized ground forces alongside advanced aerial surveillance platforms to locate the kidnappers’ hideouts deep within forest corridors. The operation has since evolved into a coordinated multi-agency mission involving the Nigerian military, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilante groups, and intelligence operatives. Combined security teams are currently combing difficult forest terrain, conducting aerial reconnaissance, tracking movement patterns, and following intelligence leads in what officials describe as a painstaking but aggressive rescue operation. For many families, each passing hour feels unbearably heavy, but the ongoing collaboration among security agencies and government authorities continues to offer hope that the students will be rescued safely and reunited with their loved ones.

*Fixes May 19 to open defence Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday dismissed the no-case submission made by politician-activist Omoyele Sowore in the charge of cyberbullying President Bola Tinubu brought against him by the Department of the State Services (DSS). The Court upheld DSS' charges against Sowore for allegedly calling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a "criminal" in his social media handles. The judge fixed May 19 for Sowore to enter his defence in the charges against him. Sowore had filed the no-case submission and prayed the court to discharge and acquit him of the 2-count charge. In the long ruling, Justice Umar punctured Sowore's arguments that the DSS provided only one witness and that the victim, President Bola Tinubu, wasn't invited to testify. He held that the DSS successfully linked Sowore to the alleged crime and that the defendant did not deny posting the offensive messages online. The judge further ruled that the Supreme Court has long established that any evidence, no matter how small, that links a defendant to an alleged crime is sufficient to establish a prima facie case against the defendant to warrant his defence in the allegations against him. Shortly after the ruling, counsel to the DSS, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, told the court that he was ready to proceed with the trial. However, Sowore's counsel, Marshall Abubakar, rose to appeal to the judge that his client has something important to tell the court. Even though counsel to the DSS protested the move, insisting that the rule was that a defendant may be represented in court by counsel or by himself, not both, the judge allowed Sowore to use the microphone to address the court. He began by openly accusing the Judge of bias and asked the judge to recuse himself, as he wasn't sure of getting justice in his court. He alleged that the judge was in cahoots with the federal government to convict him at all costs so as to prevent him from contesting the 2027 general election. His counsel, Abubakar, echoed the same sentiment, asking the Judge to return the case file to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for reassignment to another judge. The DSS lawyer, Akinlolu Kehinde SAN, who had earlier asked the Judge not to grant audience to Sowore but his counsel on record, prayed that the recusal application be discarded. In a brief ruling, Justice Umar ordered Sowore to file a formal application for recusal and state his grievances. He thereafter fixed May 19 for the defendant to open his defense. The Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday arraigned Chidiebere Justice Mark, aka Justice Crack, before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on a three-count charge bordering on cybercrime. Mark, who was arrested by the Nigerian Army over the weekend, was accused of circulating false information in a viral video and accompanying statements through his X handle regarding alleged inadequate feeding of soldiers of the Nigerian Army. Count One read: That you, CHIDIEBERE JUSTICE MARK, adult, male, of Plot 88 Sabon-Lugbe, Abuja, on or about the 28th day of April, 2026, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, did circulate information to the public through your social media handle @JusticeCrack, regarding alleged inadequate feeding of Nigerian Army personnel, which you know to be false but posted for the purpose of causing annoyance, ill will, and hatred, especially among the citizens who hold divergent views, and thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended. Count Two: That you, CHIDIEBERE JUSTICE MARK, adult, male, of Plot 88 Sabon-Lugbe, Abuja, on or about the 28th day of April, 2026, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, did publish and circulate a viral video and accompanying statements concerning the Nigerian Army through your X social media handle @JusticeCrack, which generated widespread negative public reactions and is likely to cause fear and breach of peace, and thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 59 of the Criminal Code Act. Count Three reads: That you, CHIDIEBERE JUSTICE MARK, adult, male, of Plot 88 Sabon-Lugbe, Abuja, on or about the 28th day of April, 2026, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, did attempt to commit a felony, to wit: publishing and circulating a derogatory video and accompanying statements concerning the Nigerian Army through your X social media handle @JusticeCrack, which generated widespread negative public reactions and was likely to cause fear and breach of peace, and thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 509 of the Criminal Code Act. Following Mark's arraignment, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the matter to May 25, 2026, for trial and possible hearing of a bail application. The judge ordered that he be remanded to DSS's custody. Source: Vanguard.ng

*Fixes May 18 for hearing* Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, thwarted a move by Tope Temokun, counsel to online publisher and politician, Omoyele Sowore, to secure a month's adjournment in a suit he filed against the Department of State Services (DSS) and Meta Platforms Incorporated (owners of Facebook and X). The judge expressed surprise that Temokun, who as counsel to the plantiff, ordinarily should be interested in a speedy adjudication, would seek a month's adjournment. He overruled the counsel and fixed May 18 for hearing. Sowore had last September sued the DSS, Meta Platforms Inc. and X Corp., accusing them of unconstitutional censorship of his social media accounts. He prayed the court to declare as unconstitutional the request by the DSS for Meta to delete his posts calling President Bola Tinubu a "criminal." Listed as defendants were the DSS, its Director General, Oluwatosin Ajayi, as well as Meta. When the matter came up on Wednesday, Sowore's counsel, Temokun, drew the court's attention to the withdrawal and substitution of an earlier application and counter-affidavit by counsel to Meta Incorporated, who were listed as the third defendants. Responding, counsel to the DSS and their Director General, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, lamented the tardiness of the Meta legal team. He blamed the Meta team for all the delays encountered in the course of the matter, and expressed a desire for speedy resolution of the matter. Kehinde told the court that it was in the interest of justice that the matter be quickly dispensed with. He stated that he had fully prepared from the beginning. The senior lawyer begged the court to accord the matter accelerated hearing. He and Sowore's counsel, however, didn't object to the withdrawal and substitution of Meta's application and counter affidavit. Counsel to the DSS appealed to the court not to make a long adjournment. At this point, Justice Umar, who noted that courts prioritize matters bordering of the rights of citizens, offered Sowore's counsel the privilege to choose a date. The counsel proposed June 2, which the judge said wasn't a close enough date. Justice Umar held that, against the importance the matter, he, as the presiding judge, has the final say. He directed all the parties to return to his court on May 18. The same court had on April 2, dismissed a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Sowore, against the DSS), its Director General, and Meta Platforms Incorporated (formerly Facebook). Justice Umar resolved the three issues identified for determination against Sowore, declined to grant any of the reliefs sought, and dismissed Sowore's suit for lacking in merit. He awarded N1.5 million cost against Sowore. Source; The Cable

*Case Adjourned To April 29* Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has granted an accelerated hearing in the trial of six suspects accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu's administration. The court scheduled dates of April 29, April 30, May 4, and May 5 for the commencement of trial proceedings and the hearing of bail applications filed by the defendants. During proceedings, the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, informed the court that the prosecution had witnesses available, subject to the convenience of the court. Counsel to the first defendant, Mohammed Ilayepo, indicated that his client's bail application was due for hearing. Justice Abdulmalik, however, ruled that the trial would commence before any bail applications are considered. Counsel to the second, third, and sixth defendants, Paul Erokoro, A.I. Yeru, and N.S. Diri, respectively, expressed reservations about their readiness to proceed, citing the short notice given to them and the complex nature of the case. Justice Abdulmalik then directed all counsel to agree on dates suitable for a speedy trial. The court subsequently fixed April 29, April 30, May 4, and May 5 as hearing dates for the accelerated trial.

If political loyalty were a sport, Atiku Abubakar would have a wardrobe full of jerseys, each worn just long enough before the next transfer window opened. His journey resembles a continuous cycle: (PDP)—the place where the journey to power began. (AC) — a swift diversion when faced with discomfort, as addressing internal issues is less appealing than merely altering the signboard? (PDP) — back again, proving that in politics, old doors are never really closed, just temporarily ignored. (APC) — another strategic move, perfectly timed with presidential ambitions. Coincidence? Of course not. (PDP) — a return trip, because apparently the grass keeps looking greener where he just left. (ADC) — the latest bus stop on this never-ending political shuttle, perhaps dressed up as a fresh start, but feeling more like a sequel nobody asked for. To critics, this pattern doesn’t signal flexibility; it signals desperation, a constant search for the most convenient launchpad rather than a commitment to a clear ideology or national vision. There’s also a recurring accusation that within party structures, Atiku has consistently wielded significant influence during primaries, shaping outcomes and sidelining rival contenders. That, critics argue, explains why he so often emerges as the party’s flag bearer, not necessarily because the field is empty, but because the field is carefully arranged. Even his former principal, Olusegun Obasanjo, has at different times cast doubt on his leadership qualities. When a political mentor turns into a public skeptic, it lingers like a stubborn echo. Despite all these political migrations, many Nigerians remain unconvinced about his suitability for leadership. The repeated bids and shifting platforms have not translated into broad trust or acceptance at the highest level. His recent statement that he will step away after the 2027 election has not diminished the skepticism that still surrounds him. Given his history, some see that promise as written in pencil rather than ink, easily erased if another political opportunity appears. It wouldn’t surprise critics if yet another party switch is framed as a “fresh comeback.” At some point, even the most experienced traveler must retire. For many observers, that time, at least politically, has already arrived. The question remains whether he will heed the signs or continue to pursue the limelight. As the political landscape evolves, it becomes increasingly imperative for leaders to recognize when to pass the torch and allow new voices to emerge.

Applaud the Guardians, Don’t Silence Them: Why the DSS Still Matters in Nigeria’s Fight for Survival By Mallam Mohammed Alwali (Security Analyst/ Activist for Northern Nigeria) At a time when fear, uncertainty, and insecurity threaten the very fabric of our nation, it is easy to let frustration turn into anger, and anger into calls for dismantling institutions. But in the midst of this emotional storm, Nigerians must pause and confront the truth: the Department of State Services (DSS) has quietly been standing between chaos and stability. This is not propaganda. This is reality. In recent months, intelligence-driven DSS operations have disrupted terror plots across the North-East and North-West. While the public may not see dramatic press conferences, the results are deeply human: families that were not shattered, markets that were not bombed, children who still returned home safely. In Borno State, coordinated operations involving DSS intelligence led to the rescue of abducted victims from terrorist enclaves. To those families, this was not just a “security success” it was the return of hope, breath, and life. Recently, a suspected kidnapping kingpin, Sani Galadi, was apprehended at the airport while attempting to travel abroad. This arrest was not random. It was the result of meticulous surveillance and intelligence work. Similarly, gun-running syndicates moving thousands of rounds of ammunition into Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna were intercepted, potentially preventing countless future attacks. Each arrest represents more than statistics. It represents villages spared from raids, commuters spared from ambush, and mothers spared from mourning. In a fragile security climate, a single successful sabotage can cripple economic life and plunge communities into crisis. Their vigilance ensures that the machinery of the nation keeps moving. Modern security is not about lone heroics; it is about collaboration. DSS intelligence sharing with the military, police, and local security structures has improved response time to threats. Joint operations have made it harder for criminal networks to operate freely. Public concerns about civil liberties and operational conduct are valid in any democracy. Encouragingly, internal review mechanisms and reforms have been introduced to address these issues. The answer to institutional imperfections is reform and oversight, not dismantling a critical pillar of national security. Nigeria is fighting a complex, multi-front security battle. In such times, emotional reactions must be balanced with sober reflection. The DSS is not perfect — no institution is — but its recent operational successes prove that it remains a vital shield in the nation’s defense. Applause does not mean blind loyalty. It means recognizing sacrifice, valuing results, and demanding improvement without inviting collapse. Because when the guardians fall silent, chaos speaks the loudest.

The Speaker described the operation as a major breakthrough in the fight against insecurity in the state, noting that the bravery, professionalism, and commitment demonstrated by the security personnel resulted in the death of several bandits, while others were successfully arrested by the security agencies. The Speaker commended the joint clearance operations by the Army and the DSS, which he said were based on intelligence, and resulted in the rescue of over 70 kidnapped persons in the state. The Speaker's commendation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Assembly's acting head, Directorate of Media and Public Relations, Mairo Adamu Mani. A civil society organisation, the Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV), has lauded the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the ongoing prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN. The group described the action as a clear demonstration of the commitment of the nation’s security and anti-graft agencies to accountability and the rule of law, irrespective of the status of the persons involved. In a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, CAIDOV's Executive Director, Comrade Gbenga Soloki, commended the Director General of the DSS, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi and Olanipekun Ola Olukoyede, EFCC chairman, for what the group termed renewed determination to ensure that no individual is above the law. Soloki said the prosecution signals a positive shift in the fight against impunity, noting that it would strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system and serve as a strong deterrent to public officials who might be tempted to abuse their positions. He urged the DSS and EFCC to remain professional, transparent, and guided strictly by due process in the conduct of the case, while calling on other relevant institutions to provide the necessary support to ensure justice is served. The group also appealed to the judiciary to handle the matter with diligence and without unnecessary delays, stressing that the timely delivery of justice is critical to sustaining the fight against corruption and abuse of office. CAIDOV reaffirmed its support for all lawful efforts aimed at promoting accountability, good governance, and the protection of citizens’ rights in Nigeria, and called on citizens to support the fight against abuse of office by public officers.

We all know it will come to this.... From the beginning, it has always been about money. |

By Afolabi Kehinde What happens when a journalist misplaces priorities, ignores professional ethos and chooses sentiments over objectivity? I’d say, he loses touch and begins gloating mindlessly until he eventually fades away…because in the end, everyone sees ‘the journalist’ for who he truly is; shallow, bought over for a few pennies and deprived of critical reasoning. Unfortunately, it may seem as though Yemi Adebowale is gradually toeing this part because howelse can it be explained that a journalist would blatantly undermine the Chief of the foremost intelligence agency in the country. I was totally put off when I saw the title of that article. Really, ‘a chap," if I had an iota of respect for you, best believe you’ve lost it all and I sure speak for majority of Nigerians when I say we have not lost our culture of respecting our elders. I would have gone a bit further to school you on the DGSS’ age plus his achievements in his over thirty five years of service to our dear Country which you haven’t even as much as attempted to scratch in your career. But let's leave that aside, your distorted mind probably won’t comprehend it. One could smell the outright subjectivity in that article. How can a journalist be so desperate to take sides?? Have you been completely bought over by Emefiele and his ill-advised cohorts? One can only wonder how much it would take to turn you against your country… Yemi telling the DGSS that he failed in the war against terrorism is likened to a goat telling a lion that he failed to protect the jungle…it’s outright tomfoolery. We all know a goat can never understand what it takes a lion on a daily basis to protect the jungle. I’m beginning to think Yemi was under the influence or just willfully clouded by misguided sentiments because I still am amazed by his line of thought… In a desperate bid to discredit the DGSS, Yemi questioned the DSS for intervening in the persistent fuel scarcity that bedeviled the whole of 2022?? An intervention that has restored normalcy to the situation and brought huge relief to Nigerians, I inclusive!!! And like I said earlier…I speak for majority of Nigerians. I may not know much about the DSS, but one thing I know for sure is that the DSS has the mandate to dabble into any area of the country in the interest of the good of the people. How can you be so blinded by chauvinism?? You say long cues persist in fuel stations across the country?? Kindly point them out…specifics are important when laying such bogus claims, Mister Man. I can boldly tell you that there has been no form of fuel scarcity since the intervention of the DSS. I could decide to school you on the topic ‘economic sabotage’ because for you to wonder why the DSS intervened in the fuel situation. Oh dear, you know nothing…apparently you have no knowledge of what the term entails and the workings of any national intelligence organization, perhaps I’d recommend a book ‘Sabotage by Anastasia Nesvetailova and Ronen Palan’. Read this, and educate yourself further on the meaning of sabotage before coming to the public sphere sounding like a dimwit. You are an embarrassment to journalists worldwide. Your article exudes a shocking level of ignorance, lack of professionalism, poor judgement, shallowness among many other failings. For a man of your supposed calibre. What calibre though?? This is just me giving you some undeserved praise, but yea, let’s assume you are expected to have some level of ‘character’ I can pardon non state actors, it’s always been in their nature of the unpatriotic among them to create instability and antipathy, but for you to lend your voice to such a disreputable cause, that I can’t wrap my head around…Has the professional body guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria suddenly become so liberal?? Or nonchalant toward the principles guiding the practice of journalism? The NUJ should chastise you for this. I got to the point where you mentioned Sowore, El Zakzaky and Sambo Dasuki, then I realized, oh…..I probably wasted my time trying to school you because I finally understood you…You are one of the few Nigerians who want to see Nigeria disintegrate. Yet again, I cannot hide my disappointment… I am extremely disappointed. Are you really a journalist?? Do you really understand what it is to preserve the security of a nation against all internal threats to national security? I expect that you should be widely read… Please stop embarrassing the revered profession of journalism. Go back to the basics of journalism and educate yourself to avoid misleading Nigerians before you publish again. Yemi got one thing right tho…YES! the DGSS is obsessed…Unlike Yemi who is obsessed with bringing him to disrepute. Yusuf Magaji Bichi CFR fwc is preoccupied with discharging his duties to the state, constantly on his toes with strategies to ensure that Nigeria remains indivisible. It is not unnatural to see articles like that of Yemi, just like the popular saying by Dale Carnegie goes, ‘any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn—and most fools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving. I, on behalf of the good people of Nigeria forgive you for your moment of unbridled ambition. We choose to let go because we know you do not know better and we sincerely hope that you do better, Mister Yemi. Afolabi Kehinde, is a Concerned Nigerian from Ibadan, Oyo State. Copied |
The United States’ Missions in parts of Africa are replete with under hand deals. It is unbelievably embarrassing. Aside the fact that the missions have abandoned their core objectives of advancing peace and other consular services, they have become centers of meddlesomeness and interferers in internal governance systems of host countries. These adversarial actions have been deemed despicable. Over the decades, America has engaged in activities aimed at undermining administrations across the Continent. The US Department of State is either doling out bad predictions and estimates about African countries or issuing recurrent but repulsive movement and travel alerts for their nationals suggesting the region is constantly unsafe. While the advisories are oftentimes exaggerated, the scare actions are done solely to justify and acquire more funding from their home government for self-serving of the diplomats Notably, the US Mission in Nigeria has continued to exploit insecurity to justify its ostentatious proposals to her country. While the US and its agents exploit security concerns and socio-economic challenges bedeviling the country, it has failed to curb its home-based security challenges that are threatening the safety of its citizens. It is common knowledge that gun violence, mass shootings, rising drug-related crimes, arson, homicide, rape, suicide, aggravated assault, robbery and cybercrime are more prevalent in the United States than in Nigeria. White supremacist activities are even more active. Surprisingly, American government has not only turned a blind eye to these security concerns over the years, but has also continued to downplay or censor the gravity of crimes in their homeland. It is estimated that mass shootings is responsible for the death of over 39,000 people each year, implying that over 360 people get shot every day in the country. While the United States ranks higher than the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia in terms of mass shootings, another study found that nearly one-third of the world's public mass shootings (90 of 292 between 1966 and 2012) occurred in the United States. To the US and its missions in Nigeria, the daily gun violence and attacks in their country are excusable. However, it beats ones imagination, that the pockets of restiveness in Nigeria are more important to them than their frequent incidences of violence. If these attacks by armed citizens in US were to happen in Nigeria, the American government and its agents would have long premised on the situation to undermine its leadership. While the US has persistently highlighted issues surrounding Nigeria’s socio-cultural complications, it has apparently ignored its many related socio-cultural challenges and unanswered relevant questions on gun control and racism. White supremacy crises have continued to manifest through consistent violent attacks, racial discrimination, unfair immigration policies, and the skewed media role against the black race. More worrisome is the growing number of atrocities been committed in the US by white supremacist groups, with black men as principal victims. Over the decades, white supremacist ideology was used to rationalize the genocide of Native Americans and the enslavement of blacks and their descendants from the Colonial period to the 19th century. This practice has remained within American government institutions. Furthermore, it is quite amazing how the US covertly supported dissidents that staged the ENDSARS protests across Nigeria. The subversive elements were allowed to use twitter and other similar platforms to organize, communicate and execute attacks against citizens, critical infrastructure and institutions in the country. Jack, the ex CEO of Twitter, in consolidating the interest of American government to threaten public order and stability in Nigeria, out-rightly refused to suspend accounts of the ENDSARS organizers. Meanwhile, the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after he was hit by truckers protests in the country, described their action as “unacceptable”. Twitter, still under the control of Jack, wasted no time in suspending the twitter accounts of the protesting truckers, what double standards! The 2021 attack and insurrection at Capitol Hill has indeed exposed the Achilles’ heel of the American government and its systems. There is definitely no gainsaying the fact that America is as corrupt as the Nigerian governments they castigate and term corrupt. It is on record that the United States' resistance to corruption has declined in recent years. It has dropped from its rank of 18th in 2016, to 27th out of 180 countries on the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index of 2021. More so, in the recently released annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), the United States fell to a low of 67 out of a maximum possible score of 100, down from a high of 76 in 2015. This simply means the lower the score, the worse the corruption. The many ways of how corruption thrives in the US include the influence of wealthy individuals over government; “pay to play” politics and the revolving doors between elected government office, for-profit companies, and professional associations; and the abuse of the US financial system by corrupt foreign kleptocrats and local elites. It is, however, laudable that Nigerian government and the populace are beginning to wake up from their slumber and opposing the offensive attitude of US Government and their counterparts. In most cases, they are more corrupt and churning out projections and security alerts to their nationals, only to secure more allocations to fund their extravagant lifestyles. These so called US diplomats love to live large. They use the constant security scare to deceive their home government to get more money for ostensive living in the host country, acquire treated (armoured) cars; build palatial residences in the US and frolic with women of sorts. Nigeria and other African governments must sustain this "wokeness" and resist the continuous attempt to undermine their sovereignty at the expense of crooked personalities and self-centered interests. Nnamdi Kanu: A criminal suspect and not a political prisoner – Alex Ndubueze MARCH 20, 2022 With the deteriorating security condition in the South-East, one is inclined to call for a political solution to put an end to the burgeoning restiveness bedeviling the region. While bouts of criminal activities and bloodletting characterized the South East, the arrest and incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu have irrefutably aggravated insecurity in the zone with repercussions for socio-economic and political order. This has sparked desperation and entreaties by critical stakeholders and groups for workable resolutions to restore peace and stability in the region. Though these calls are intended for peace and greater good, the political solution being sought for is unfortunately not tenable and the reasons are not far-fetched. Nnamdi Kanu was arrested and charged with crimes of terrorism and treasonable felony. These crimes qualify him as a criminal suspect and not a political prisoner. This is more so that the internationally accepted definition of political prisoner is at variance with crimes committed by the outlawed group leader. A political prisoner is anyone detained for exercising their human rights under international law. Such rights include peaceful assembly, freedoms of religion, association, expression and advocacy for peaceable social and political change as well as criticize government policy or government official. Kanu was none of that or could have been one if he remained non-violent. He turned his IPOB group to a bloodsucking violent pack. The modus operandi of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra is also not in line with peaceful procedures as defined. Kanu is commonly known to aggressively advocate for civil disobedience, bigotry and fanning the embers of war to provoke anarchy and public disorder. He has on several occasions openly incited members of his group to take laws into their hands. Indisputably, the formation of IPOB’s military wing code named Eastern Security Network, exacerbated insecurity in the South East Zone. Attacks on police formations, correctional centres, homes of select personalities and other critical government facilities became widespread after the formation of ESN. IPOB is also suspected to have launched unprecedented attacks against security agents in the region leading to the death and maiming of innocent citizens. During the #EndSARS protest, Kanu was known to have incited the carnage and destruction of lives and property in Lagos State and some parts of the country. His broadcasts are filled with hate, bile, intolerance and propaganda against the State and its institutions. Similarly, the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe noted that a person can only be recognized as a political prisoner if the suspect’s detention is imposed purely for political reasons without connection to any offence. The activities of the IPOB leader falls within the context of crimes against the state which prompted security and law enforcement agencies to effect his arrest. In furtherance to this, Nnamdi Kanu was never a member of a political party neither is he being tried for expressing political views. He has never contested for election under any party or independent platform. Why then should he be referred to as a political prisoner? His offences – treason and terrorism¬ – are purely criminal; for which he is being charged and tried by a competent court of law. It is public knowledge that Nnamdi Kanu has been granted access to his lawyers, family members and medical doctors. He practices his religious beliefs unhindered despite the attempt by IPOB, subversive groups and individuals sympathetic to him to project otherwise. According to information in the public space, he is treated in accordance with provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). His legal team can attest to the veracity of this assertion. Additionally, a political prisoner is someone who is detained for many years without trial or under house arrest. Nnamdi Kanu was never detained under an executive order. The State has not also failed to take him to court after his arrest. He was promptly charged. So the argument of being detained as a political prisoner has no foundation. Nnamdi Kanu was a fugitive who jumped bail after his initial arrest. The severity of his charges, unrepentant disposition and history of jumping bail has diminished the chances of a Judge granting him bail again. Therefore, a political solution may not be feasible given the fact that Nnamdi Kanu’s case contradict the basis for being termed as ‘political prisoner’. His actions contravene both the country’s Criminal Justice system and international laws, thus the law must be allowed to take its full course. Nnamdi Kanu must face the music. Rather than seek a political solution, stakeholders and promoters of a political solution in the Kanu matter should resort to social reorientation of its citizens to shun violent and divisive acts responsible for crippling security and socio-economic activities. They should also join hands with government and security agencies in restoring normalcy in the zone. Campaign for political solution is a blackmail that should not be allowed to fester. The Igbo elite should come out of its inertia and selective amnesia. It should face the problem and speak out in one loud voice against evil. Those struggling to plant in public psychology that Nnamdi Kanu is a political prisoner should stop that. He is simply a criminal suspect and should be seen and treated so. This achieves common good. Allowing Kanu and IPOB with their splinter groups to bestride the region with pervading violence will rub the region of many things including economic development and the Presidency of Nigeria. The time to act is now. Alex Ndubueze is a public commentator https://thenaijanews.com/2022/03/20/nnamdi-kanu-a-criminal-suspect-and-not-a-political-prisoner-alex-ndubueze/

What does one say about a man who is often full of himself and seeks undue relevance? What personality disorder is that called? Sanusi Lamido will not be the first and last false prophet of doom to talk about a Nigeria that will break or disintegrate. His forebears foresaw a disunited Nigeria before 2015. The year came to pass and the country is still one. Unsatisfied, Sanusi and his cohorts, from within and outside, are at it again. This time, Sanusi is trying, without any mandate, to declare fatwa on beloved country. According to him, Nigeria is on the brink or “living on extra time”. As a fortune teller or seer that he has become, he did not see his dethronement and banishment. But he is so pessimistic to see a collapsed nation. When looking for a typical illustration of a hypocrite, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi fits the description perfectly. Sanusi has carved a niche for attacking and throwing tantrums against authorities to attract attention and sympathy to himself while covering up his antecedents of self-glorification, imprudence and perceived corruption. His entrance into limelight came after he got appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2009 to serve under the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. He was to descend on the President at any given opportunity. As a seasoned economist and financial analyst, presenting an astute persona, Sanusi was quick to warm his way into the hearts of Nigerians who believed his wealth of experience would transform the country to a world class economy. Unbeknown to many, behind the eloquent exuberance and adornment of bespoke outfits, lies a controversial figure and intellectual nuisance who craves attention by inciting the public. Like the proverbial phrase that says “time reveals all things”, Sanusi’s actual character gradually unveiled with time. Sanusi is a loose cannon. He shoots without aiming. He is an unpatriotic citizen who continues to hurl baseless criticism against authorities even when he is part of it. In the Jonathan era and under this administration, his condemnations were a defence against allegations of misconduct and abuse of office during his tenure as CBN Governor and Emir of Kano, both positions in which he was disgraced and shown the way out. It is widely known that under the Jonathan administration, he operated the CBN like his personal venture and allegedly committed humongous financial atrocities. Report of a panel set up in 2014 to probe him noted that Sanusi was indicted for being fraudulent, reckless and wasteful. He was fingered in the missing N38bn by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria in April 2013. The money was said to have been paid to Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Press, a subsidiary of the CBN. However, MINT account showed no evidence of such transaction. Between 2011 and 2012, he supposedly expended the outrageous sum of N5.3bn on legal and professional fees, private guards, lunch for security aides and promotional activities. Mr Saint indeed. Accusations of recruiting staff into the CBN without following due process were also leveled against him. According to PremiumTimes report of 31 March, 2014, Sanusi was further suspected by Federal Government of being one of the financiers of boko haram terrorism in the country. This culture of impunity was quick to attract a query from the then government. Rather than answer to his financial impropriety and terrorism financing, he hastily went on the offensive and began making inconsistent public statements about financial indiscretions in the NNPC. After his disgraceful exit from the CBN and as trademark of his character, he cunningly lobbied his way to become the Emir of Kano to escape prosecution for his “crimes”. Sanusi was never a qualified candidate for the throne. Some quarters believe he (un)wittingly had long began scheming his way into the Kano emirate when he suspectedly arranged for Boko Haram members to attack the former Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero who later died after succumbing to the injuries he sustained. Sanusi of course, brought immense pressure on the Emir. He brought him to Abuja to support the third term bid of then President Obasanjo, a reason the ordinary Kano people, for the first time, stoned their Emir or his convoy. He never hid his likeness for the seat of the Emir and became desperate to occupy it even while the incumbent was alive. The Emir eventually died from mental harassment suffered from Sanusi. In connivance with Rabiu Kwankwaso and Abdullahi Ganduje both of whom, for political exigency, installed him as Emir. The duo of Kwankwaso and Ganduje were Governor and Deputy Governor of Kano State. Against popular demand, they conspired to make Sanusi Emir. And same people, at least Ganduje undid Sanusi. They realised that Sanusi is a dog which does not know its owner. Friendship with Sanusi is like buying a wild cat for a pet. Even as Emir, he lacked respect for due process and constitutional authority while desecrating traditional institutions. To show his double standard, Sanusi continues to advocate the culture of family planning among northerners. He also condemns polygamy. Meanwhile, he is married to four wives with thirteen children as at last count. He preaches against corruption but in less than three weeks after ascension as Emir, Sanusi was accused of embezzling at least N4bn from the Emirate Council coffers and squandered over N37m on recharge cards. He politicised the emirate and created unnecessary tensions in Kano State and divisions among the populace. This led to him being disgraced once again, dethroned and banished from the State. Though some of the issues are under litigation, it is not probable he would ever win in the court of public opinion even if he wins in the Court of law. As proof that he does not care about the people he claims to serve, Sanusi chose Lagos, a cosmopolitan state outside the conservative North to enable him get close to his local and foreign hostile allies. Reason for his choice of Lagos instead of Loko LGA of Nasarawa State where he is banished in disregard of customary rites daily manifests. It is obvious he is partisan. His public utterances betray him. He seeks to be among Lagos Big Boys as well as power brokers in the country. His preoccupation is to install a President of a South West extraction and he is assiduously working for this. In his unending quest for power, influence and relevance, Sanusi again shamelessly bribed his way into becoming the leader of the Tijjaniyya sect in Nigeria and continues to appear in the full regalia of Emir and addresses himself as one. Luckily, the Tijjaniyya sect knows who its real leader is. Adorning the outfit of an Emir exemplifies his disrespect for the people. An insensitive man, Sanusi appears in full regalia of a sitting Emir simply to deceive the unsuspecting public. Deposed and banished, how does he think he can return to Kano to reclaim the seat? Kano people are not lily livered. And Sanusi knows he cannot test their resolve. Only a highly hallucinating person like Sanusi will decide to live in his dream world. Sanusi and his Hallucinations! Sanusi is not the only Emir to have been deposed and banished. His grandfather was deposed. Then Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki and Emirs of Muri and Gwandu were once deposed and banished. They took it in good faith. Faced with their fate, they never constituted a nuisance as Sanusi has. They went about their normal businesses and did not incite the public against constituted authorities. They never sought to go back to their thrones. Sanusi’s desperation to sneak into Kano is an aberration. Why does he want to destabilise Kano? Is it a task from his Lagos sponsors so the authorities can be marked as failed. Those who come to equity must do so with clean hands. While citizens have the right to advise and criticise, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi lacks that moral ground. Where the Judicial system works, Sanusi would be in jail serving time for his crimes. Rather, he continues to play victim by skewing narratives that project him as virtuous to divert attention from his indecorous personality. If Nigeria is on the brink, distressed, sinking or living on borrowed time, Sanusi and his wasteful lifestyle contributed immensely to it. Sanusi should do a soul searching and change for good, as a good Muslim, Sanusi should accept his fate and imbibe the teachings of Islam. He should adhere to the admonition of Quran that God gives power to whom He wishes and takes it away from whom He wants. Mallam Sanusi wake up and stop hallucinating. Abdullahi Tahir, a public affairs commentator writes from Kano. http://nigerianews24.com.ng/2022/02/11/sanusi-lamido-and-his-hallucinations/

By Perpetua Onuegbu The Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, has pledged the determination of the Federal Government to provide necessary incentives to make the girl-child in Nigeria to study engineering. Adamu gave the pledge in Abuja on Friday while speaking at the investiture of Mrs Charity Ojobo, the new chairman of the Abuja Chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria (APWEN). He said that government would support APWEN to achieve its collective goals, stressing the role of women in the development of any society, especially in the developing world. The minister told the association to keep the flag flying in pursuit of its drive to achieve the collective mandate of encouraging more girls to take up careers in the engineering profession. Speaking earlier, Ojobo said that “if the girl-child is brought up to show deep interest in engineering such a measure would foster nation building. “Engineering is a career that one can comfortably stay in the house and make your pay and it is a career that is central to the wellbeing of our citizens.” According to her, the new leadership of the Abuja Chapter of APWEN has decided to forge ahead and ensure that the nation has more female engineers than before. “We have programmes for women in the FCT and its villages and we are collaborating with the ministry of water resources to achieve set objectives, including attracting the girl-child to engineering. Also speaking, a former lawmaker, Sen. Ayogu Eze, told the Nigerian Society of Engineers to carry out more oversight visits to engineering sites, to reduce cases of building collapses and other professional lapses in engineering. He said that the report of the Lagos 21-storey building collapse which was submitted to the Council of Registered Engineers in Nigeria this week, indicted the engineers that handled the project. Eze said that more oversight visits would have averted the collapse of the building and similar incidents nationwide. The Guest Speaker, Dr Boluwaji Onabolu, speaking on “Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Water Unites Us,” stressed the importance of water and hygiene, describing water and sanitation as human rights. She said that a lack of access to water was contributing to the insecurity in the country, describing water availability as essential to peaceful co-existence in any nation. Onabolu called on engineering stakeholders and the government to ensure adequate provision and access to water by all citizens. In Reprisal Attack, ISWAP Abducts 3 in Borno, Day After 25 Terrorists Drown in River A day after 25 Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP, insurgents fleeing sustained aerial onslaughts by Nigerian military jets got drowned in a river within Lake Chad axis, the terrorists have abducted three persons, in what appears to be a retaliation ‘attack’ at Mandaragirau Village. Reports from Mandaragirau in Southern Borno indicates that they were abducted in the early hours of Saturday. The three young men abducted are Yamta Usman, Hamidu Adamu Chiroma and Mustapha Adamu Chiroma, also known as Lingi, PRNigeria learnt. PRNigeria yesterday reported that no fewer than 25 ISWAP terrorists fleeing air strikes of the military were drowned while attempting to cross a deep river within Lake Chad axis in the North East. It was gathered that six military fighter jets belonging to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ‘aggressively’ raided camps of the ISWAP elements, on Thursday evening. The camps, located at Bukar Mairam and Jibularam, served as warehouses for ISWAP insurgents’ ammunition and firearms. Concerning the attack at Mandaragirau village, a source, disclosed that, “We woke up to this shocker. The last time this kind of episode happened here was when they went to the market and pick someone. But that one we learnt that they suspected him to be an informant for the soldiers. ”For these young men, we are suspecting that the ISWAP may be out to take young men to forcefully conscript them into their ranks. ISWAP recently have been recruiting young men from villages around the southern Borno axis.” Another resident, however, noted that it was rather unbelievable to see happenings like this when the news making the round indicated that the military was dealing decisively with the ISWAP elements. ”If something like this will continue to happen in the face of the ongoing stories and promises, then we do not know who to trust or believe anymore. I was devastated to receive the message very early in the morning that ISWAP came to our village and took with them some young men. “This is sad. We have not received any news regarding why they were taken. We are all praying for them to return safely. But I am equally afraid of the happening especially these days with such reports of abduction and current recruitment by the ISWAP,” he said. https://prnigeria.com/2022/02/05/reprisal-attack-iswap-abducts/ |
SOWORE AND HIS PERSONALITY SEEKING SYNDROME By Sumunu Razaki Omoyele Sowore never gets tired of displaying the histronic personality disorder life has cursed him with. He has constantly exhibited symptoms of a narcissism. He will bully and feign victim all in a single situation. Very evidenced in how he conjures lies against his ideal victim, the government, to draw public symphathy to himself in furtherance of a ludicross political ambition which he leverages to enrich himself. It is simply inconcieveable that someone in their right state of mind could allege the deactivation of national identity and bio-data by Government. Sowore is many things. From accusing the Federal Government of assassination and kidnap attempts to staging being shot by Police in a poorly scripted dramedy show, all is not well with him mentally. Sowore is not only sick, but pathetically so. The most ridiculous of his antics is his recent rant accusing the federal government of deleting his NIN and other forms of national identity of all the millions of NINs on the database. The Federal Government's and its apparatus' silence, on the other hand, is a sign of maturity and an attribute among many others for which people like Sowore can never rule. Unfortunately, some gullible Nigerians believe these lies to the point of resorting to violent protest. These sort of people deserve our indulgence and for them I choose to write. Sowore is a self-albatross, he has sought cheap fame by being at the forefront of radical activities, his antecedents display opportunistic violent activism, dating back to his Student Unionism days at Lagos State University. He co-founded African Action Congress (AAC), embezzled funds belonging it and was suspended after nearly destroying the party following his humiliating performance during elections. Frustrated by the series of events, he resorts to once again exploiting his sham news platform, to canvass rebellion against a democratically elected government. Despite the fact that his plans were foiled by security agencies, particularly the Police and Department of State Services, he has continued to flaunt bail conditions by not only instigating but engaging in violent protests, including the #EndSARS. The sooner Sowore's gullible followers and online minions realize that their supposed saint and saviour is nothing more than an arrant swindler and cashtivist, the better. The ordeal of one of his close associates, Oluwatosin Adeniji, who apart from risking her life for Sowore' cause, was also imprisoned but only to be used and dumped for foreign grant. This is one among many of how far Sowore can go to achieve his motive to the detriment of anyone. Frankly, Sowore is just a Nigerian version of Ugandan politician, Bobby Wine, who believes that blackmail, propaganda, gaining international sympathy, and inciting violence will get him elected as Nigeria president. Afterall, he Sowore has terrorised, bullied and blackmailed a host of personalities in numerous screwed reportage. Most certainly, if all disgruntled politicians toe the line of Sowore and his co-conspirators, be rest assured that the Nigeria of our dream will remain a mirage. Sad for him and his likes, it cannot be. Copied |
