As the Major League Soccer kicks off its 18th season in few hours, some of the main rumors that chased the kickoff of the season were major transfer moves in some of the major clubs in the league. Obafemi Martins, Robert Earnshaw and Brazilian legend Kaká are just a few of the players reportedly making their way to the MLS this season. The Seattle Sounders have reportedly been chasing Martins for some time; however, it looks like Obafemi Martins move to MLS side Seattle Sounders may drag longer than expected if not called off as Levante want to keep their top scorer, at least till Monday. Manchester City youth player Courtney Meppen-Walter was jailed for 16 months on Thursday for causing the death of a brother and sister while speeding in his Mercedes in central Manchester. Judge Martin Steiger QC sentenced Walter to two 16-month terms, which will run concurrently, and he was also banned from driving for three years. Ivorian international Didier Drogba was on Wednesday cleared by UEFA to play for his newest side Galatasaray in the Champions League rejecting protests raised by German side Schalke about the eligibility of the 34-year-old striker. Ronaldo was the target of vicious laser attacks during Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory in ongoing Copa del Rey semi-final. Cristiano Ronaldo had to deal with the emerald light that kept shining in his eyes from some of the fans at the Nou Camp. Green lasers repeatedly flicked across the faces of the players, Ronaldo in particular, the faceless fans intensified their attack even more right after Ronaldo scored his second goal of the night in the 57th minute. Keshi to name squad for World Cup qualifiers next week Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi will release the list of players slated to be in his team for the World Cup qualifier’s clash against Kenya next week, no new player from the NPL will be added said Keshi. It will be nice to see some of the old faces, but with their recent achievements and status as African Champions, it’s hard to say if Keshi will reconsider his decision of excluding players like Osaze, Martins and Uche. Mario Balotelli was racially abused by fans from his former side Inter Milan during AC Milan’s 1-1 match against Inter on Sunday. Balotelli was taunted by some Inter Milan fans that came out with inflatable Bananas during the game. The 22-year-old striker who has been tagged with a lot of unflattering names in the past kept his cool all through the abuse and in a somewhat defiant gesture, put his finger to his mouth signaling for them to be quiet. Although West Brom manager Steve Clarke still believes Nigerian striker Osaze Odemwingie is a “valuable member” of his squad, West Brom home fans remain unforgiving of the 31-year-old player following his failed forced move to QPR last month. South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius may return to training next week after he was released on bail on Friday following his eight days stay in police custody. Pistorius awaits trial for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Schalke 04 has lodged a protest with UEFA over Galatasara’s newest striker Didier Drogba's participation in their 1-1 Champions League draw. Schalke, who came away from Istanbul with a 1-1 draw in their first leg encounter, insists that the transfer of the former Chelsea striker from Shanghai Shenhua was completed after the registration deadline. Pistorius appeared in court in Pretoria, South Africa Friday morning and the 26-year-old athlete seemed shattered, he wept uncontrollably in court as prosecutors said they would pursue a "premeditated murder" charge over the death of his girlfriend. Burkina Faso surprised a lot of spectators when they won over Ghana in their semifinals game. The history makers are not done yet, the Burkinabe will make their first-ever appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations finals later today. Two-time champions Nigeria (1980, 1994) hope to bounce back as Africa’s favorite as they face Burkina Faso for the second time in this year’s tournament, their first encounter was in Group D, both sides ended the game with 1 goal apiece. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has placed a ban on Tunisian Referee, Slim Jdidi after his controversial performance in Wednesday’s semifinal match between Ghana and Burkina Faso. The integrity of football is at stake as one of the biggest investigation ever into suspected match fixing was reported Monday by European police. In the investigation, the police revealed the huge criminal network involved in fixing 100s of matches, including Champions League, and even World Cup qualifiers.
