Superstar singer and songwriter, Tiwa Savage has dropped a striking video for a new single, ‘49-99’.

the single and video is her first official solo work since she exited Mavin records and joined Universal Music Group in May.

The single and Meji Alabi-directed video began global streaming on September 5.

Following a listening party where Tiwa explained the message behind the song and video.

The video features a recreation of Congo High: Class of ’72.

The photographs were taken by renowned photographer, Elliot Elisofon. The girls were living in the early 1970s Congo.

The beginning of the Mobutu regime.

Elisofon was actively campaigning for ‘African authenticity’, attempting to purge the country of all colonial cultural influence.

Taking some cue from his works, Tiwa re-imagined the styling of the girls in the photographs.

She explained that the song was a call for social change.

She said, “The song encourages the young to put down the sense of inheritance and work for what they desire in life, for a better tomorrow.

“We can’t sit on our old glories and expect things to change for the better. On ’49-99,’ Tiwa says.

“‘49-99’ also addresses some political leaders who, instead of focusing on the growth of a nation, are there just for the money and having affairs with underage girls –

While the citizenry is hustling hard to make a daily living.” She added.

The music star elaborated on the song in a press release ‘49-99’ as a term coined from the hard life many Nigerians go through.

The song reveals a case study of a transit bus service which ought to serve 49 persons.

Due to the poor economic condition is often made to carry twice the number with so many persons standing.

The track also references Fela Kuti’s famous “49 sittings, 99 standing” line from his 1978 song “Suffering and Smiling.”

Throughout the track, Tiwa sings about the pursuit of money in Nigeria, offering commentary on widespread poverty.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, on Thursday expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to equipping the Nigeria Police and its men to ensure that no officer died fighting criminals.

Adamu, who said stakeholders in the South-West had spoken in the same vein not to allow crime escalate in the region, said the governors had “shown their commitment towards supporting the police and other security agencies in terms of providing logistics to enhance their mobility.”


The IG, who spoke in Ado Ekiti during a security stakeholders’ meeting, added that the fact that Nigerians were being attacked in South Africa should not be a reason for anybody to attack the businesses of South Africans in Nigeria.

“Those who did that are unpatriotic. They are criminals and that was why we arrested some of them and we will prosecute them,” Adamu said.

He said, “The Federal Government has invested a lot of money in securing fleet of vehicles to deploy them on the highways, the nooks and crannies of the country, especially in the South-West to enhance the security of the region.

“The vehicles are there and they will soon be deployed. The vehicles are not just patrol vehicles, they are fitted with state of the art technology that can help the officers manning them to make sure that the highways and the adjoining roads are properly managed to checkmate the criminals.

“No officer should die in the course of fighting criminals. For that reason, the government has decided to provide all of us with body armour and other necessary equipment that will help us protect ourselves while pursuing the criminals,” Adamu said.

The IG said the country’s policing system had been redesigned to be community-based so that all Nigerians could see security as their responsibilities.

He said, “Our strategy for policing has changed. The community is now working with us and we are going to ensure that all the communities are represented whether you are traditional rulers or you belong to any socio cultural group.

“We are going to train people from each community who will have the power of the police to arrest. They will be deployed to help the police in fighting crimes. When it comes to recruitment, we will come to your communities,” he said.

Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Asuquo Amba, said the police had been able to reduce crimes in Ekiti due to hardwork displayed by his men, adding that his command had maintained robust and smooth collaborations with other sister agencies to maintain security of lives and property.

The Chairman, Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, who praised the IG’s posture towards elimination of crime and insecurity, also lauded the welfare policy for the police as reeled out by Adamu on the occasion.

At least three soldiers and a policeman were killed on Thursday when IS-backed jihadists attacked the town of Gajiram, Borno state, security sources and residents said.

Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) stormed the town around 0100 GMT in nine all-terrain trucks fitted with machine guns and engaged troops and policemen in a gunbattle.

It was the third attack on the military in the town in a month, part of a wider Islamist militant insurgency that has raged in Nigeria for a decade.

“The terrorists killed three soldiers and a policeman in the attack and seized some vehicles,” a security source said.

“They seized five military vehicles including a mine-resistant armoured truck and a police van in the attack,” said the source who asked not to be identified as he was not authorised to speak on the incident.

The militants first attacked the town late Wednesday, forcing troops and policemen to withdraw from the town, according to residents.

The fighters drove into the town around 1600 GMT, “firing indiscriminately,” said Gajiram resident Abdu Goni.

“They burnt down the police station and took away four military vehicles and another one belonging to the police,” said Goni.

“They returned this morning and killed three soldiers and a policeman without harming any civilians,” he said.

He said the jihadists seized another military pickup truck in the second attack.

In a statement on Thursday, ISWAP claimed 10 soldiers were killed and six military vehicles and arms seized in Gajiram.

Gajiram lies on the highway linking Maiduguri and the garrison town of Monguno, 55 kilometres (34 miles) away.

Gajiram and its army base have been repeatedly attacked by the insurgents.

In June last year, ISWAP killed nine soldiers there.

ISWAP has targeted dozens of military bases since last year, killing scores of soldiers.

On August 30, ISWAP fighters killed eight soldiers when they opened fire on a military convoy, 20 km outside Gajiram, according to military sources.

The decade-long insurgency in northeast Nigeria by Boko Haram has killed more than 27,000 people, displaced some two million, and spilt over into neighbouring countries.

While Boko Haram tends to hit softer targets, the splinter faction loyal to the Islamic State group has ratcheted up attacks against the military since last year.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Murtala Muhammed International Airport Command, says it arrested 64 drug traffickers between January and August.

The NDLEA MMIA Commander, Garba Ahmadu, told journalists on Thursday that the suspects comprised 55 males and nine females.

He said the total drug seizure within the period stood at 260.202kg, comprising 20.360kg of cocaine, 14.040 heroin, 112.242 cannabis sativa, 84.920 metamphetamine and 24.140kg of ephedrine.

Ahmadu stated that on June 10, the command arrested one Kouassi JeanPaul, otherwise known as Eze Ikechukwu, who swallowed 80 wraps of methamphetamine
According to him, the 55-year-old suspect was arrested on his way to Jakarta, Indonesia.

He said the suspect would be arraigned on Friday (today).

He explained that the suspect found it difficult to excrete the wraps that he swallowed after being caught.

He said, “He swallowed 80 wraps of Methamphetamine. He freely excreted 79 wraps with one wrap trapped in his system. The suspect was referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital from the Nigeria Air Force clinic.”

Ahmadu said after a surgery at LASUTH on June 27, 2019 JeanPaul excreted the remaining one wrap in his system.

While warning Nigerians against drug trafficking, the commander said no fewer than four people lost their lives to the crime recently

Opeyemi Sowore, the wife of the detained presidential candidate of the African Action Congres, Omoyele Sowore, has spoken out against the continued detention of her husband by the Department of State Services.

Mrs Sowore said that the Nigerian government has found no evidence against him, hence, no grounds for his continued detention.

She said this during an interview on a US television show, Democracy Now!, video of which was shared on their YouTube channel

Mrs. Sowore said, “There are no formal charges per se. He’s being investigated, so the courts gave the Nigerian government or the DSS the ability to hold him for 45 days to investigate — treason, possible treason and terrorism. They based it upon a meeting that he had with Nnamdi Kanu, who has an organization around Biafra. He met with him. Yele made it public. In fact, he disagrees with some of Nnamdi’s rhetoric, but he met with him. And Yele’s whole thing is bringing in everybody’s voices so that Nigeria can be a country for pretty much all of its citizens. So, that’s one of the things that they mentioned against them.

“They also mentioned he may have taken money from international countries, and he met them in Dubai. He has never been to Dubai before, which was an interesting statement on the Nigerian government’s part. And no money, basically, has been found with him. So, those were some of the things that they’ve mentioned and associated with him, but they basically have no grounds for holding him and haven’t found any evidence.”

During the interview, Mrs Sowore revealed how her husband was taken and detained by the DSS. She also said she had been able to talk to him only twice since his incarceration.

She said, “It was Friday night here, Saturday in Nigeria, I got a text from him saying, “I love you.” And I’m like, “OK, great. I love you, too.” But his cousin started calling me over and over about an hour after that and told me that he had been detained. And for four days — or, three days, we did not have any contact with him. We didn’t know where he was. He was taken by force at his hotel in Lagos and transported to Abuja and of course, he didn’t eat their food, didn’t drink their water for all those days.

“He was basically in isolation with no food, no water. But then, on the Tuesday after, he was able to get in touch with his lawyer, as well as they allowed people to come in to provide him with food. But since then, he’s basically been in isolation for over a month, being held in Abuja with basically no outlets. He’s basically locked in a room, for the most part.”
