Scientists have finally answered the million-dollar question: why men on average don’t live as long as women. According to a new study, men appear more vulnerable to heart disease than the inaptly-named ‘weaker sex’. As a result, they succumb earlier.
High blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. Contrary to popular belief, however, smoking accounted for only 30 percent of the difference in mortality between men and women after 1890, the USC study said.

According to the researchers, the unequal impact of heart-related deaths on men cut off in their prime (especially during middle and early older age) raises the question whether men and women have, in fact, been facing different inherent heart disease risks at different points in their lives.

“Further study could include analysis of diet and exercise activity differences between countries, deeper examination of genetics and biological vulnerability between sexes at the cell level, and the relationship of these findings to brain health at later ages,” William F. Kieschnick, a professor in the Neurobiology of Aging, said.

According to researchers, significant differences in life expectancies between the sexes first emerged at the turn of the 20th Century. It appeared death rates plunged after infectious disease prevention and better diets were taken up by those born during the 1800s and early 1900s. The study found that women began “reaping the longevity benefits” at a much faster rate, researchers said.

Nathan Collier said he was inspired by the recent Supreme Courtdecision that made marriage equal. He said he was particularly struck by the words of dissenting Chief Justice John Roberts who claimed giving gay couples the right to marry, might inspire polygamy.

And so this week, Mr Collier and his two wives, Victoria and Christine, entered a courthouse in Billings, Montana, and sought an application to legalise the trio’s polygamous union,

“Right now we’re waiting for an answer,” Mr Collier told The Independent. “I have two wives because I love two women and I want my second wife to have the same legal rights and protection as my first.”

He added: “Most people are not us. I am not trying to define what marriage means for anybody else – I am trying to define what marriage means for us.”
The practice of bigamy – holding multiple marriage licences – is outlawed in all 50 of the US states, Montana among them. But Mr Collier said he planned to sue if his application was denied.

Mr Collier said he was former Mormon who had been excommunicated for polygamy and now owned a refrigeration business in Billings.

He married his first wife, Victoria, 40, in 2000. The 46-year-old, who appeared in the reality TV show Sister Wives, held a religious ceremony to marry second wife, Christine, in 2007 but did not sign a marriage license to avoid bigamy charges.

His first wife, Victoria, said that she and her husband’s second wife got along “like sisters”.

“We’re like any family. There are good days and there are bad days,” she said. “But there are more good days.”

Asked how she felt when her husband took a second wife, she said: “How can you know who you are going to fall in love with? This is our destiny.”

Yellowstone County clerk officials initially denied Mr Collier’s application, then said they would consult with the county legal officer before giving him a final answer.

Yellowstone County chief civil litigator Kevin Gillen, told theAssociated Press that he was reviewing Montana’s bigamy laws and expected to send a formal response to Mr Collier by next week.

Mr Gillen said: “I think he deserves an answer.”

The physical human body was meant to move. When it is not walking, running, stretching, and bending regularly, it does not function very well. Though movement is essential, more and more people are choosing to live sedentary lives. Choosing to have movement in one’s life each and every day is in fact vital for the evolution of consciousness. How physical movement occurs is a personal preference and as varied as there are practices. Playing a sport may bring the exact body conditioning that is right for one person but yoga may be right for another. Walking through the busy streets of a crowded city may be perfect for someone else, while a job requiring physical labour may keep another in perfect balance. Whatever the choice for keeping the body moving, we know it is right because along with food choices, the body finds its own equilibrium in terms of wellness and ideal body fat. If we store and carry more fat than is natural, this will cause it to be an imperfect filter for the senses and for transformation.

If an exercise program is chosen as part of one’s practice then this should be undertaken in a natural way. If substances or exercises are used to enhance one’s physical body for vanity, then this is not likely a feature for evolution or upliftment. Exercise for the mere purpose of keeping the body sexually attractive or for feeling superior to others should be made conscious. Similarly, using exercise to numb feelings that need to be dealt with also needs to be put into awareness. The practice of exercise and movement then becomes about honoring the body and keeping it in its natural state for the purpose of wellness and advancement at the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.

Equally important are the physical spaces we spend our time in, which affect the body greatly. The body needs to spend time outdoors where the senses can interact with fresh air and sunlight. The natural environment has much to offer the transforming body and these interactions are essential in the transformational process. There is a reason that churches and temples over the centuries have included beautiful gardens and outdoor settings. The entire human body changes when in the midst of nature; flowers, trees, birds, the wind, and sunlight are all beneficial to us and should be considered when choosing one’s daily practice. Even in crowded cities one can choose to walk in a park or to simply be in the busy streets soaking up the sun and the elements.
While spending time outdoors, we can become cognizant to have direct contact with the earth itself, which is called grounding. Grounding is achieved by having bare feet directly touching the earth by walking on grass, sand, or soil. The reason this is so beneficial is that the earth itself has an electromagnetic resonance which happens to be that of the natural rhythm of the human body. By having direct contact with the earth through the feet, the human body can become recalibrated by the earth. We get thrown off our natural rhythm by interacting in the world with negative emotions, fatigue, and stress. This can also occur by being exposed to pollution or multiple forms of electromagnetic radiation such as mobile phone use, mobile phone towers, wireless internet, and the like. Grounding is a phenomenal method for naturally balancing the body that has become lost in many cultures around the planet. If environments are not conducive to walking barefoot because there are no exposed areas of grass or soil, or it is simply too cold for direct contact with the earth, then a similar grounding effect occurs by soaking one’s feet in water with natural sea salts. This simple yet valuable exercise can bring great rewards to all human bodies of all cultures, ages, and levels of wellness.

Thinking of exercise as dynamic movement and choosing the environments in which to do this are vital for the evolution of consciousness. The goal is to honour the body as much as possible so it can become a clear filter for sensing the world in which it is embedded; the world that is seen and unseen.

A new, saucier way to attract tourists has appeared in Barcelona, with erotically-shaped fruit and vegetable seeds now sold on the local flower stalls. Penis peppers, “vulva flowers,” and breast-shaped melons (with nipples) are currently on offer.

“People stop a lot to look at them and take photos with them,” a stallholder told Catalan daily La Vanguardia.

“The erotic seeds are the best-selling,” Jessica Balastegui, who also works on one of the flower stalls, added.

The seeds cost €3-€4 a bag, with inscriptions “Barcelona” and “La Rambla,” a famous tourist artery in central Barcelona, making the seeds a desired souvenir.
“People coming here on stag and hen nights often buy them because they’re funny,” stallholder Rosa said.



She also explained that the peppers are deformed, and that’s because they end up resembling the male Instruments – and the size depends on the “site conditions in which they have to grow.”

“You put them in warm water three or four days, drain and plant,” she said.

Pope Francis has made an unexpected request for his upcoming trip to Bolivia – he wants to chew coca leaves, the natural source of cocaine, according to a government official. Bolivia says it will “await the Holy Father” with the “sacred” leaves.

Culture Minister Marko Machicao told state broadcasters that the Bolivian government “offered [the Pope] coca tea or something for the altitude” on his upcoming visit.

But the pontiff apparently has his sights on chewing coca leaves, which have been used by local people to ward off the effects of altitude for centuries. They are also believed to help with muscle pain and stave off hunger and thirst, and can be used for medicinal and food purposes.
“He has specifically requested that he wants to chew coca, so we will be awaiting the Holy Father with the sacred coca leaf,” Machicao said.

The pope will also receive “complimentary cakes and products derived from the coca leaf” during his visit, according to a statement from Bolivia’s Communications Ministry.

The pontiff isn’t the first high-level visitor to be given a tasty treat involving coca leaves. Just last year, Bolivia gave UN chief Ban Ki-moon a ‘coca cake’ for his 70th birthday.

The use of coca leaves, the main ingredient in cocaine, is prohibited in much of the world. However, it is legal in Bolivia and other Andean nations.

Many in Bolivia, including President Evo Morales, defend the use of coca leaves and consider it a sacred plant.
In 2013, the Bolivian government successfully petitioned the United Nations for special permission for coca growing and its lawful uses within its borders.

Morales supports a “social control” policy of the leaves, enforcing a cap of 2,500 square meters of cultivation per family.

Two decades ago, a World Health Organization report said there were “no negative health effects” from coca use in leaf form. Those findings were shelved, however, due to US pressure.

The pope is scheduled to arrive in Bolivia on July 8, as part of a Latin America tour. He will also visit Ecuador and Paraguay while speaking out in defense of the poor.

If you love the taste of an ice cold soda, you may want to determine whether the flavor is actually worth the risk. Sugary drinks are killing around 184,000 people each year, according to a new study.

The research, published in the American Heart Association’s Circulation journal, points the finger at sugar-laden drinks ranging from sodas to sweetened iced tea, fruit drinks, and sports/energy drinks.

“Many countries in the world have a significant number of deaths occurring from a single dietary factor, sugar-sweetened beverages,”said study author Dariush Mozaffarian from Tufts University in Boston.

According to the research, most of the 184,000 global deaths are from people who die of diabetes due to the consumption of“sugar-sweetened beverages” (SSBs).

Another 45,000 die globally from cardiovascular diseases caused by sugary drink consumption, and 6,450 people die from cancers linked to sugar-laden beverages.

Those numbers prompted Mozaffarian to advise soda lovers to “substantially reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from [their] diet.”

“There are no health benefits from sugar-sweetened beverages, and the potential impact of reducing consumption is saving tens of thousands of deaths each year,” he added.
Although the numbers cite global deaths, Mexico had the highest death rate due to sugary drinks, with 450 deaths per million adults. It was followed by the US, with 125 estimated deaths per million adults.

Seventy-six percent of deaths related to sugary drinks occur in low-to-middle income countries, according to the report.

The findings “indicate the need for population based efforts to reduce SSB consumption throughout the world through effective health policies and targeted interventions directed at stemming obesity-related disease,” the report states.
The research examined 62 dietary surveys from more than 611,000 people, conducted between 1980 and 2010 across 51 countries. The participants represented almost two-thirds of the world’s adult population.

Published on Monday, the study is the first comprehensive assessment of worldwide deaths attributable to sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). It was conducted by an international team of researchers from Harvard, Tufts, and Washington universities in the US, and Imperial College London.

A machine on an assembly line grabbed a worker and thrust him against a metal slab, causing lethal injuries.

The tragedy occurred at a plant belonging to German automaker Volkswagen (VW) in Baunatal, on Monday.

A 21 year old man, who is not an employee of the plant, was assembling the robot for a new motor production line, according to the Local.de. His Meissen-based company had built the machine for the automaker.

He was the only person in the proximity of the machine. Other workers were standing in the outer area. The robot grabbed the man and threw him against a metal slab. He suffered a severe blow to the chest area and died in hospital.

VW spokesman Heiko Hillwig said that human error is to blame for the incident, according to the Associated Press. He said that the machine is programed to grab auto parts and manipulate them. It operates in a restricted area of the plant.

The factory at Baunatal, 100 kilometers north of Frankfurt, is the second largest for the Volkswagen brand. It doesn’t make vehicles, but assembles components for other plants.

In a graphic illustration of the raging debate on gay marriage, a video has emerged from Columbus, Ohio, of a little girl with a rainbow flag standing up against a Christian preacher, who emotionally assures her that it is a sin, and Jesus will save her.

In the video posted on YouTube, the girl holds up a rainbow flag, while the Christian activist approaches her with an ardent speech on Jesus’s “redeeming power.”

“It’s a love you’ll get through your life. Jesus Christ will give you that!” he shouts, insisting that the “gay world” is quite the contrary.
“This world will give you heartache, this world will give you divorce, this world will give you pain!”

He continues by turning to the crowd nearby and reminding them once again that “Jesus will redeem from that.”

The crowd seems indifferent to his emotional speech, and so does the little girl, with people approaching and giving her hi-fives.

The incident happened at Comfest, a community event in Columbus, Ohio, and the preacher is reported to have assaulted other festivalgoers. In the end, he was escorted out by police, YouTube users said.

Comments about the video are split, with some saying the parents “are doing a great job of teaching their daughter that love is love and that religion is not the way of the world,” and that they had explained to her what she is doing it for.

Other commentators think otherwise, with one of them saying the girl’s parents should stop using their kid as a “tool of protest.”

Many echo the commentator’s concern, posting that the girl probably doesn’t know why she is holding the flag.
