I’m not a fan of Nigel or Reform (for obvious reasons), but boy oh boy — his delivery of today’s speech was excellent. Head and shoulders above Kemi Badenoch, Keir Starmer, Trump & co. That’s what political leaders should sound like.

long long thing

The answers should be like
Based on the refusal/acceptance rates, No, the UK was not easier to enter or Yes, the UK was easier to enter.

You could also go a step further to say the US or Australia or Canada were easier to enter with 50% rejection rate. Na opinion wey you dey entitled to, but at least state your answer clearly. I stated mine clearly, you just typed up another long story without a particular position.

In fact, at least with that same warped logic, we can say Oxford University and Harvard are also easy to enter. Those that went to Teeside only chose to go for Teeside, not that they couldn't have gone to Harvard/Oxford/Yale
Dude, you’re hilarious and savage at the same time 😂

The major difference between the uk and others is the disrespect for those already in the uk legally and working themselves out to integrate into the society. The same status you have in the uk if you're in other western nations you won't be bothered much as new policies are mostly targeted towards those who are still outside or about to make an entry.
Are you not watching the news in the US with Trump? 😂

Lol, you can say that again.

I grew up in Nigeria, it was a good place to live back then, but unfortunately it’s a good place to leave now. The UK may be rearranging its immigration system now, but I plan to stay and do all possible to fit my children in legally. Returning to live in Nigeria permanently is not my plan B, C, D or J.
I understand your POV, and it may be possible for some—especially those already settled. Unfortunately, for some of us on the Skilled Worker route, the signs are not looking great; hence, contingency plans need to be activated.

I say this as someone who was impacted by the removal of the PSW in 2011 and had only four months to return post-graduation. So, this is my second missionary journey—and it feels like déjà vu all over again.

As an earlier poster mentioned, the US, Canada, Australia, et al. are all tightening their borders. So what’s the viable alternative… Côte d’Ivoire or Sudan?

Lastly, I’ve recently seen numerous debates about the best place to retire or invest in real estate—abroad (care home) or Naija (family home). I reckon this recent announcement will push some people back into the Naija camp. It reminds me of the experience of the Igbos during the Biafran war.

In the end, to each his own.

Currently holidaying in Nigeria, those who are gaslighting our people to return home just want them to return to poverty. If you’ve built a life with your family in any western country, upskill and maintained the highest standard possible in your career or business you’ll always be in demand no matter the immigration changes. Your plan B or Z should never to return to Nigeria but instead japa 2.0 to another advanced nation. The Brits themselves migrate all over the world, Nigerians should emulate that too and not cower under manipulative narratives to remain stagnant and not advance their human potential.
Which viable first world nation is pro-immigration at the moment? Happy for all those who’ve achieved settled status/citizenship…but not everyone is in the same boat.

Lol, most other countries are already preparing or begining to reconsider the idea of tightening their immigration polices following trump and the recent UK immigration policy change.
For example Canada's newly appointed immigration minister has proposed to cut annual immigration by 33% till 2027.
The United state is a no go area for many. For example unlike the uk where a skilled worker is entitled to ILR in 5yrs or 10yrs.
In the US if you like spend 20yrs on H1b is doesn't lead to green card or Permanent resident.
Except an employer file for you, which is reserved for highly skilled professionals like nurses, doctors and IT professionals. Even with employment based EB-3 petition there's an annual cap of 140k green card and waiting time takes around 2-4yrs and 2-3yrs by marriage.
Unlike the UK were 1yr after ILR you can apply for your British passport. In the US you can only apply for an American passport after 5yrs on green card.
The only good thing about a US work visa is that your kids born in the US get automatic citizenship which UK doesn't offer.
However the new orange man in the white house is working relentlessly to stop this.

….
Top tier comment!

I laugh when I see comments on X or IG saying Nigerians should consider other European countries with “free” tuition etc. Asides language barrier, economic opportunities are scarce.

Last last, we all have to return home to Naija, one way or the other. No visa required.

This immigration change will affect those already on the 5year route! Only dependents of British citizens are exempt.
It seemed very obvious to me. From the gov POV, if you allow the 1.5m skilled workers in the system already to continue with 5yrs pathway, they would’ve missed the boat. The new applicants will be a trickle compared to all those that have come in since 2020 (Boriswave).

Best bet to stop this would be judicial review/court intervention.

Were they really liberal in 2009? If I remember correctly, this was during Tony Blair and Gordon Brown’s era with their British jobs for British graduates slogan and changes to HSMP. I despised Labour back then and my political stance hasn’t shifted after all those years.
Labour is meant to be the immigration-friendly party naw (the lesser of all evils). Theresa May cancelled PSW back in 2011 and lots of students were impacted. I don’t expect any immigrant esp. those on the pathway to citizenship voting Conservatives or Reform. With Labour following the same path, it feels like we’ve been left politically homeless. Unfortunately, the Lib Dems, Greens, and others don’t seem like realistic options either. In the end, it looks like we’ll need to start focusing on fixing Nigeria ourselves—because at this rate, they’re trying to send us back before we even hit our original japada (retirement) plan.

You have a point there. In fact, it should be a thing. Starting from Saturday, in rotation, Nigerian members of the Boriswave should form groups and start doing monthly "environmental" in London. They should take night bus to Victoria, foregather there with their cleaning materials, then humbly walk down to the Palace to chant humble thanks for the opportunity to serve, before spreading out to central London to clean elsewhere, starting from the Home Office and including Heathrow Terminal 5, which was where a large number most likely first glimpsed this promised land. After everything they gather again at Victoria, then disperse again till the next month.

Indeed we are not worthy.
Zahra29 is right though. I have friends/family back home who would jump at the opportunity to japa to anywhere, but it seems there are no viable options. UK, Canada, Australia and US —every major Western country—all seem to be slamming their doors shut to new immigrants.

So what do they do now? If this had happened when we were making our decision to relocate. we would be trapped/stranded too.

Personally, I’m glad to be on this side. It’s not perfect, but as they say, there are no perfect solutions—only trade-offs.

Your accumulated avios are transferred monthly to your BA executive club account. It shows as a deduction on the AMEX app but a credit on BA executive club account.

When you reach the required spend to earn a companion voucher, the voucher gives you a 50% avios discount if you are traveling alone or if you are going with a companion, the companion travels with you without paying any avios.

The link with Qatar et al.ensures that you can also spend your avios on a Qatar flight etc
All clear now. I need to login to my BA account then to see how many points I’ve accumulated so far. Many thanks

With 6000 promotion bonus avios for successful applications, apply for Amex Credit Card using this link

Let's enjoy fun trips together!

PS: Spend and pay back responsibly!
I’ve never fully understood how the Amex Rewards system works. Could someone please explain it to me in simple terms?

For instance, I currently have 346 BA points, but I can’t see my Avios balance in the app anymore. However, I noticed an activity summary showing a deduction of 200 Avios points on March 1st. Does anyone know why they were deducted? Does it happen monthly because I can see I earn a lot from each spend?

Also, what exactly is the Companion Voucher? Is it a separate reward from Avios points?

Lastly, I’ve transferred some Avios points to Qatar Airways in the past—how are Amex, BA, Qatar Airways, and other airlines connected in this system? I feel I’m not fully utilizing this benefit considering all my credit card spend is with AMEX!

Hehe...

The issue here is why would the average right-leaning Brit vote for Kemi over Nigel?

We already know the current Labour government would have a stronger 'grasp' on migration than Boris et al had. So she can't really campaign on cutting migration given that Labour would be quick to remind her of their last result. Starmer also appears calculated and is unlikely to have too many slip-ups (usual caveats).

She's tried to build trust among traditional Tory voters by giving vibes of 'I'm not like these other migrants' which as expected, hasn't stuck. Doesn't help that her way of reminding folks of her Nigerian roots has been by demarketing the nation (and herself in reverse).
Her anchor baby situation would always be in the news especially with Trump seeking to end birthright citizenship. Nigel would soon be quick to remind her that her much castigated carers would contribute far more to the British society by the time they are citizens than many anchor freeloaders like her did.

I wish her the best.
Tick Tock…. KB’s running on borrowed time.
I can only imagine how Nigerians would rejoice when she’s no longer leader of the opposition….even more than they did Abacha’s death 😂

Mixed feelings about our Kem.

Starting from the desirability of her actually leading the conservatives and potentially the country. She wasn’t an anchor-baby and isn’t technically an immigrant, but that sense of her being here as a result of gaming the system won’t go away.

I think anyone with a homeland of their own would question this. But, she is married to a native, and if Sonia Ghandi could do it why not? Many also seem to think her point of origin makes her taking a hard stance on immigration somewhat hypocritical – although I don’t agree. Her positions should be for the best interests of GB, regardless

Strategically, I think she ran for leader too early in her career and at a bad time given her party’s recent history. She has 14 years of non-delivery to explain – for a government she served in. I suspect she’ll serve to bolster the Tories DEI credentials, take a few hit’s for the team, provide cover on some big issues (repatriations etc.), and then be forced out for someone Jenrick or Jenrick–like to take over. Where's Bojo these days grin.

Four year is a long time in opposition from her starting position as leader. Her task is to rise above a few false-starts, deal with internal questions about her leadership style, put forward some cogent, hard-hitting policies and grow into a more statesman-like figure (the whole Nigerian brouhaha, for example should have been avoided). All this whilst trying to sound more Reform-like than Reform, who are making a charge from lane 8 like Sha ‘Carri. A huge ask.

In another sense, I don’t see her as any different from the vast crop of politicians we have now. Very little political nous or real character. Mostly shallow with a jobsworth style of governance.

Great post!
I don’t think the question of if she will be deposed as leader before the next GE but probably when? My bets are after the local elections in May. Tory backbenchers should have enough to nail her by then. Last round of the leadership contest was almost a 3-way split, so she had about 2/3rds of them vote against her from the get go. Add that to her “false-starts”, Tories tanking in the polls and her inability to land a punch at PMQs….Game Over!

Happy new year!

I’m looking for advice on navigating childcare costs in the UK. It’s looking like £1,400 monthly for nursery care (5 days a week) which is more than our mortgage! Bringing a parent or family member over to help isn’t an option for us. Key questions…
• Are childminders a more affordable and reliable option?
• For those working from home, can you manage watching a one-year-old while doing low-level tasks (no online meetings)? Is it realistic?
• Do people form social groups, or rely on elderly church members for shared childcare arrangements, like we do back home in Naija?

Also, I’ve noticed that childcare is often unavailable at short notice with almost 2yrs waiting list period. With so much pent up demand, could this be a viable business idea? Has anyone explored starting a childcare service or similar venture?

Thanks in advance!

How’s the above not relevant? Naija police was her baseline position. So British Police is a huge upgrade to her. Like it was previously attributed to KB, her job is not to do PR for Nigeria. She wants to expose everything. Nothing concern her, burn the house down…maybe that’s her own way of fighting for the common man. Fair enough I say in this particular instance.

PS - I hate Nigerian politicians, so hopefully this causes her enough embarrassment for them to change (wishful thinking)

How does that relate, was it necessary?
I just watched the video, and I have to say, this is actually fine by me. I dare say, most of us that relocated from Naija share her perspective on UK policing, 24/7 power, good roads, etc. that initial culture shock that hits you and I have no issue with her expressing that viewpoint. However, as the leader of the Opposition, she’s receiving attention and stirring reactions everywhere. I find it hard to envision her path to No. 10. She lacks widespread popularity, political acumen, and the ability to read a room (lunch breaks are for wimps and sandwich is not a real food). Let’s see how she expects the Conservative membership to secure the votes she needs. I, for one, can’t wait for this chapter to close and for her to be relegated to the dustbin of history.
