The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has obtained a court order authorising it to auction 108 court forfeited/abandoned vehicles to interested members of the public.

Chairman of the agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi disclosed that the vehicles to be auctioned by the government include 86 court forfeited and 22 abandoned vehicles after they had been impounded by the enforcement team of the agency in different parts of the State for driving against traffic (one-way) and committing other traffic offences.

Egbeyemi also stated that the public auction is scheduled to hold on Tuesday and Wednesday, 3rd and 4th of December, 2019 at the agency’s car park, Ikorodu, Lagos.

According to him, “It was after the expiration of the 30 days public notice issued by the agency in line with the dictates of the law to all owners of the 22 abandoned vehicles to claim them that the government obtained the court order to auctioned them to interested members of the public”

“Let me commend the present administration for the on-going massive roads rehabilitation going on simultaneously across the State and to state clearly that motorists both private and commercial bus drivers should desist from driving against traffic (one-way) or causing traffic obstructions to other roads users with.”

Travel / Five Dead, Nine Critically Injured On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident by jamespeter10(m): 12:54pm On Dec 01, 2019
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Command, on Sunday confirmed an accident along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which claimed the lives of five persons and injured nine others.

Clement Oladele, the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, Ogun, that the accident occurred at 9.10 p.m. around Danco Petrol Station, near Sagamu, on Saturday.

Mr Oladele blamed the lone accident, which involved a white Toyota Hiace bus, with registration number LSR 642XB, on speed violation.

He said that 14 persons, 10 males and four females, were involved in the crash.

“The corpse of the victims have been deposited at the morgue of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, while the survivors are also receiving treatment at the same hospital,” the sector commander said.

He said the obstruction as a result of the accident had been cleared to ease free flow of traffic on the highway.

The sector commander commiserated with the victims’ families and enjoined members of the public, whose relations were involved in the ill-fated crash, to contact the FRSC Command or the OOUTH, Sagamu, for any information.

Mr Oladele also reiterated the need for motorists to drive cautiously within the recommended speed of 50 kilometres per hour at construction sites.

He advised passengers to always caution drivers who are in the habit of driving recklessly, and call the FRSC’s toll free number 122, to report any driver who refused to take caution.

Politics / Return All Our Stolen Artifacts - Lai Mohammed Warns Foreign Nations by jamespeter10(m): 9:21am On Nov 29, 2019
The Federal Government has launched a campaign for the return and restitution of Nigeria’s looted and smuggled artefacts from around the world.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, in a statement issued by his Special Assistant (Media), Segun Adeyemi, launched the campaign at a briefing held in Lagos on Thursday.

Mohammed disclosed that the London Metropolitan Police had seized the Ife Bronze Head and invited Nigeria to make a claim or they would have to return the artefact to the person claiming ownership of it.

The minister also said the Federal Government would begin the campaign with a quest to retrieve the bronze head, which was one of the items stolen when one of the country’s national museums was burgled in 1987.

He said, ‘’After it was brought to an auction in London two years ago, the auction house observed that it was an Ife Bronze Head, which belongs to the International Council of Museums Red List of cultural goods deemed to be most vulnerable to illicit traffic.

‘’Now, the London Metropolitan Police have seized the object and invited Nigeria to make a claim, otherwise they will have to return it to the fellow claiming ownership. We have now started work on the return of the Ife Bronze Head to Nigeria.”

Mohammed added that in launching the campaign, Nigeria had become emboldened by Article 4 of the UNESCO 1970 Convention, to which most countries around the world subscribe and which identifies the categories of cultural property that form part of the cultural heritage of each member state.

He said that by the provisions of the Article, they include cultural property created by the individual or collective genius of nationals of the State concerned, and cultural property that has been the subject of a freely agreed exchange or received as a gift or purchased legally with the consent of the competent authorities of the country of origin of such property.

The minister said, “With this announcement, we are putting on notice all those who are holding on to Nigeria’s cultural property anywhere in the world that

we are coming for them, using all legal and diplomatic instruments available.

“Gentlemen, we are under no illusion that this will be an easy task, but no one should also doubt our determination to make a success of this campaign.”

The Minister added that it was impossible to imagine by what logic an Ife Bronze or a Benin Bronze or a Nok Terracotta could belong to any other part of the globe, except to the people of Nigeria, whose ancestors made them.

“We have never laid claim to the Mona Lisa or a Rembrandt. Those who looted our heritage resources, especially during the 19th century wars, or those who smuggled them out of the country for pecuniary reasons, have simply encouraged the impoverishment of our heritage and stealing of our past.

“These timeless and priceless pieces of art work were an important part of the nation’s past, its history, and heritage resource. Allowing them to sit in the museums of other nations robs Nigeria of our history.”

Controversial investigative journalist, Kemi Olunloyo has slammed Tacha for exposing her cleavage while signing her latest endorsement deal with Royal hairs. Kemi opined that Tacha is shifting the attention of people from the hair she’s trying to sell to her Bosoms, by exposing it.

Kemi wrote ; “Congrats on your wig company endorsement BUT Tacha!!! Plsssss pack your cleavage in when signing an endorsement deal. It is a professional partnership. Nobody is looking at your wig, everyone is looking at your cleavage and you are giving them an automatic license to criticize your Breasts. In PR and marketing the product being endorsed is what you sell not your other body parts. Parents of young girls are watching.

Crime / Four Doctors Commit Suicide In Abuja by jamespeter10(m): 9:29am On Nov 28, 2019
Between January and June this year, no fewer than four medical doctors, working in Abuja, committed suicide.

Dr Roland Aigbovo, President Association of Resident Doctors, FCT, disclosed this during a campaign against drug abuse, at Wuse Market. He did not give the names of the doctors.

The campaign, part of activities to mark the association’s Health Week was aimed at educating traders and shoppers on the dangers of drug abuse.

He said that many people resort to substance abuse to ease off stress, adding that “people now take refuge in drugs to cover up stress, believing that once someone is high, he or she will forget their problems.

According to him, global burden of mental health disorder is projected to reach 15 per cent by the year 2020.

“This had resulted in suicide, a lot of people had taken their lives as a result of drug abuse. “You will agree with me that suicide is alien to African culture, we are not used to taking our lives no matter the stress, unfortunately, things are changing.

“The medical profession is not left out of this menace because this year alone, between January and June, close to four doctors took their lives. “If those that have been trained to provide people with healthcare become patients to the extent of taking their lives, it is a source of huge concern.”

He said that the residents doctors embarked on the campaign to draw government and public attention to mental health issues.

Crime / Maina’s Son, Faisal Abdulrasheed Gets N60m Bail by jamespeter10(m): 10:26pm On Nov 26, 2019
Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, granted bail to Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, son of the former chairman, Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina in the sum of N60 million and one surety in like sum.

The surety, the judge said, must be a serving member of the House of Representatives, who must own a property anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory. .
He also ruled that the surety must present to the court, a three month’s tax clearance and must sign an undertaking that would bind him to attend every court proceeding with the defendant. The bail, he said, would be revoked where the surety fails to attend any trial with the defendant for no reasonable cause.

Justice Abang also ordered the defendant to submit his Nigeria International Passport and that of the United State of America to the court, pending conclusion of his trial. He adjourned until November 27, 2019, for continuation of trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is prosecuting Faisal on a three-count charge of money laundering and lack of disclosure of assets.

Despite the motion of M.S Abubakar, prosecution counsel against the bail application, Justice Abang agreed with defence counsel, Francis Orasanye that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

He held that the court "cannot exercise its discretion arbitrarily, but to ascertain what is right and what is fair in the matter," adding that “no matter how seemingly serious, no matter how seemingly grave the offences are,” the defendant has the “right of his innocence until proven otherwise’ adding that the presumption of innocence is an article of faith.

Faisal is a final year student of a Canadian University in Dubai.
