Buhari, who assumed office on May 29, 2015, failed to host the National Honours in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and there are no signs that will held this year. National honours are awards given to honour some memebers of society who, in the course of doing their work, have made exceptional contribution to the development of a nation. It is usually a way to urge them to greater service and to encourage others to follow their example. In Nigeria, the National Honours award is one of four different sets of awards given to Nigerian citizens who have distinguished themselves in various fields of life. The National Honours award was established via the National Honors Act No. 5 of 1964, during the First Republic by the Nigerian government to honour Nigerians who have rendered special and outstanding services in their various professions to the benefit and progress 'of the nation. Citizens who are awarded these honours become recognised as special citizens. The last time the conferment of the yearly awards took place was on September 29, 2014 when former President Goodluck Jonathan conferred different categories of national honours on 313 persons, bringing the total number of beneficiaries as of that time to 4,737. Although in June 12, 2018, Buhari conferred the highest national honour of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) on the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Abiola, and also conferred the second highest national honour, the GCON, on Abiola’s running mate in the election, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe. He also honoured the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, with the same award. Besides these, Buhari has failed to continue the yearly tradition of conferment of national honours. The List Of Awards include; The Nigerian National Honours, in descending order of importance, are: Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/12/president-buhari-fails-to-host-national.html

Some truck drivers, on Monday, barricaded the Akure-Owo Expressway at Uso in the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, to protest the alleged killing of one of them by a policeman at a checkpoint in the town. It was gathered that the protest halted vehicular movement on the road for several hours. The deceased, whose identity had yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, was said to be heading for the northern part of the country when the tragedy struck. He was said to have engaged in a hot argument with the policeman, who allegedly demanded a N50 bribe from him. A source said, “The policeman stopped the truck driver at the checkpoint and they engaged in an argument over a bribe of N50. The driver refused to offer the policeman the bribe and suddenly, the policeman shot the man in the head and he fell down and died. “This infuriated the other truck drivers and they barricaded the road in protest.” Another source stated that efforts made by a team of policemen, who were deployed in the scene, could not end the protest as the drivers insisted that the killer cop must face the music. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, described it as sad and unfortunate. He gave an assurance that the culprit would be brought to justice. He applauded them for ensuring that institutions, as he also cautioned them to be mindful while signing certificates of students especially those of affiliate institutions under their purview.
