PoliticsPENGASSAN To Embark On A Three-day Warning Strike Over Non-passage Of PIB by jamesw(op): 8:12am On Dec 08, 2014
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has concluded plans to embark on a three-day warning strike in protest against the delay in the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) and other anti-labour activities of employers in the oil and gas sector.

The warning strike follows the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued by the National Executive Council (NEC) of PENGASSAN to the federal government and other concerned employers’ and agencies in the sector.
It said the ultimatum had since expired without any meaningful resolution or commitment from either the government or the concerned employers’ and agencies at resolving the issues.

A statement issued by the oil workers union said all organs of the union have been fully mobilised for the industrial actions that will affect every value chain in the upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas industry.

The anti-labour activities listed by the oil workers include, retardation of staff promotion in the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), non-standardisation of nomenclature and collective bargaining agreement of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NNRA), in line with what obtains in other agencies in the oil and gas industry, refusal of the management of Addax/Petrostuff Nigeria Limited and Chevron/Sudelletra to recall sacked staff, Petrobras managment unprocedural release of staff and its refusal to renew expired collective agreement and the unjust termination of appointment of the Port Harcourt Zonal Secretary and Treasurer of PENGASSAN and NUPENG respectively.

Other issues are the perilous state of the nation’s strategic and industrial roads and highways, non-beneficial deductions of National Housing Fund (NHF) from our workers, un-abating measures of addressing pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, and divestments by International Oil Companies (IOCs) without clear guidelines to check the resultant arbitrary job losses and heightening insecurity of members/families in the troubled parts of Northern Nigeria.

The union noted that plans are at the final stage with its sister union, the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), to mobilise members for a nationwide industrial actions that will disrup operations in the oil and gas sector until the federal government show genuine intention to earnestly attend and resolve the issues of industrial dispute.

The union explained that the purported termination of the appointment of its Port Harcourt Zonal Secretary, the NUPENG Zonal Treasurer was an ill-conceived act of victimisation by their employers and which the NNPC, Federal Ministries of Petroleum Resources and Labour and Productivity, the Department of Security Services (DSS), Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) had advised their management against this act but they remained unbending.

On crude oil theft and vandalism, PENGASSAN alleged high level collaboration of the security agencies, politicians and highly placed Nigerians in the buccaneering racket of oil and gas installations, adding that the ugly trend signifies a looming extinction of the oil and gas industry with attendant job losses.

The association described the deduction from workers’ salaries for the National Housing Fund (NHF) as sheer exploitation and demand that the deduction should be stopped forthwith, warning that it would resort to whatever necessary action it deems appropriate to protect its members from further exploitation of the non-beneficial policies that has serve no member’s interest in the sector.

Politics30 Dead, Five Critically Injured In DR Congo Massacre by jamesw(op): 9:40pm On Dec 07, 2014
An overnight attack by suspected Ugandan rebels in the area of Beni in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has left at least 30 people dead, authorities have said.

The attack, which left five more people in a critical condition, took place overnight into Sunday in the village of Oicha in North Kivu province.
More than 200 people have been killed in Beni and the surrounding area in a series of massacres that have been blamed on the Allied Democratic Forces and National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (ADF-NALU).

Town chief Jean-Baptiste Kamabu, reached by telephone from the North Kivu capital Goma, said the assailants wielded machetes and axes.

He said two people were wounded and another two were abducted, Aljazeera reported.

Celestin Ngeleka, spokesman of a military operation against armed groups in the region, confirmed the death toll of 14, which he said could rise.

Soldiers are still searching the area and could “find other cadavers,” according to Aljazeera.

The Kenyan government has derived plans to have 370 non Muslims seeking refuge at the Mandera military camp moved without conceding the calls for evacuation.

The move follows two attacks by militants in the past two weeks over a Nairobi-bound bus, in which they brutally killed 28 non Muslims and the massacre of 36 quarry workers in Mandera.
Mandera County Commissioner Alex Ole Nkoyo confirmed on Saturday that plans were underway to facilitate the transportation of 370 people, stating that all the quarry workers had already been mobilized and assembled at the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) camp.

“We are currently having 370 people at the military camp and we are not evacuating them. We are only facilitating those who want to go home and we are talking to the bus owners in this town to see if we can get up to five and we give them police escort along the way,” Nkoyo said.

Reports from the border town said all ground transport and three civilian flights that depart weekly from Mandera are fully booked.

Some trade unions, including those of teachers and medical workers, were advised to leave the area. Those at the base are in fact mainly teachers, health workers, construction workers and other civil servants.

However, the government said besides improving the key roads in Mandera, the KDF and the police were to provide escort for travelers along the dangerous borderline route.

The dilapidated main Mandera-Garissa road has forced motorists to use the road near the Somali border, exposing them to frequent terror attacks in which many have died.

“The government has decided to move these people because the situation has not calmed and the ongoing meeting is to see how we are going to have them transported to Nairobi by road,” said one of the sources who attended the Friday meeting in Mandera.

He said security teams had spent the better part of on Friday going round all quarries and moving the workers out for safety considering the recent happenings in which 36 people were killed by suspected Al-Shabaab militia.

“We have gone round areas bordering Somali where their stone quarries and fished out all workers because their security is at stake,” Nkoyo said.

“We are talking to the business community to lend us buses to be used and its not that the government is paying the bus fares but only sourcing the buses to be used by those who want to travel, ” said Nkoyo.

He said all was well at the KDF camp as the soldiers provided food and water except that there was no enough bedding.

“We are yet to meet all the quarry owners and plan on how to safeguard these workers in future just like in South Africa where miners sleep in protected areas and go to work in the morning,” said Nkoyo.

At the KDF camp, Julius Gathu blamed the government for abandoning them and appealed to their families back at home to be calm for they were safe.

“We are safe here except that the government is not being honesty with its plans to have us moved from here,” said Gathu, a construction worker now at the military camp.

He said nobody from the government has talked to them but only hearing that 13,400 U.S. dollars has been send in to help them get out of Mandera “but no one is telling us anything.”

Gathu said most at the camp wanted to be with their families back at home and those who had lost their brothers were to go and burry them.

PoliticsTake Politicians’ Money, Vote Your Choice, Archbishop Tells Nigerians by jamesw(op): 1:23pm On Dec 07, 2014
As the preparations for the 2015 general elections gather momentum, the General Overseer of Resurrection Praise Ministries International, Lagos, Archbishop Samson Mustapha Benjamin, has advised Nigerians not to allow themselves to be swayed by money.

He however advised that they should vote whoever they believe can turn the fortunes of the country around for the better.
The cleric, who spoke during a rally in Lagos on Saturday, maintained that if the politicians woo the people with money, they should collect such, but should still vote their choice.

He stressed that the money being thrown around by politicians is part of the collective commonwealth.

“If they give you money collect it, because, it is your own; it is our money, but go and do the right thing; vote your mind”, he said.

He added that for Nigeria to be transformed to greatness, the electorate must vote wisely in the coming election.

Benjamin and members of his church also canvassed for the election of a Christian as the next governor of Lagos State, noting that for years the Christians have been denied the position in a state that is a mixture of the two dominant religions of Christianity and Islam.

They commended the All Progressives Congress (APC) for nominating a Christian as its flag bearer and advised the People Democratic Party (PDP) to follow suit for the sake of justice and equity.

“We are very particular about this because Lagos State has been ruled by Muslims for 16 years; and do not forget that Christian leaders from the highest to the lowest, have been clamouring for a Christian governor.

“I think that is why APC has produced a Christian candidate and we are advising the PDP to also do same by calling on other contestants who are not Christians to honourably withdraw from the contest.

“Not that they don’t have the constitutional right to contest; but, so that we can have a level playing ground in Christian versus Christian from both sides and the more popular candidate emerges”, the cleric stated.

He cautioned that if PDP does not heed the advice, it may not make any significant impact in the election.

His words: “If a party that has been ruling for 16 years can produce a Christian candidate, we want the PDP to also do so; or else, it may not to go anywhere. Let the primaries be purely for Christians in the party”.

The cleric also solicited re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan, saying he meant well for Nigeria and that with additional four years, the country would take its rightful place in the comity of nations.

He bemoaned the level of insecurity in country and advised all Nigerians to join hands with the government to solve the menace.

The rally, which took off from the church premises in Alakija, Lagos and moved to Badagry Expressway, was supported by various groups, including Nigeria Liberal Muslims; Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos; National Markets Association Leaders and Igbo Youth Movement, among others.

PoliticsWhich Countries Are The Most Corrupt? by jamesw(op): 11:13am On Dec 03, 2014
Source: .com.ng

Four Scandinavian nations and New Zealand are the world's least corrupt countries while North Korea and Somalia are the most corrupt, according to the Corruption Perception Index released yesterday by Transparency International.

Denmark (92 points), which topped the list, has occupied the No. 1 position since 2012. New Zealand (91 points), which was No. 1 both last year and in 2012, was No. 2 this year. Finland (89), No. 3 in the index, was unchanged from last year. Sweden (87) fell one place to No. 4. Norway (86) was unchanged at No. 5.
At the other end of the list are North Korea and Somalia (both 8 points), both ranked 174. Sudan (11), Afghanistan (12) and South Sudan (15) rounded off the bottom five.

The index ranked 175 countries on a scale from 0 (perceived to be highly corrupt) to 100 (perceived to be highly clean). More than two-thirds of the countries scored less than 50.

The United States (74 points) was ranked 17 on the list. It was ranked 19 last year.

You can click on the map below to see how other countries fared in Transparency International's rankings:

The group says the index is based on "expert opinions of public sector corruption. Countries' scores can be helped by open government where the public can hold leaders to account, while a poor score is a sign of prevalent bribery, lack of punishment for corruption and public institutions that don't respond to citizens' needs."

Other takeaways from the index:

— Turkey, Angola, China, Malawi and Rwanda saw the greatest falls in the index. Each fell four points.

— Egypt, Ivory Coast and St. Vincent and the Grenadines saw the biggest improvements: 5 points each.

— Corruption and money laundering remained a problem in the BRIC nations: Brazil, Russia, India and China.

"Grand corruption in big economies not only blocks basic human rights for the poorest but also creates governance problems and instability," Jose Ugaz, chair of Transparency International, said in a statement. "Fast-growing economies whose governments refuse to be transparent and tolerate corruption, create a culture of impunity in which corruption thrives."

The group also called on rich countries to do more to prevent money laundering and to prevent secret companies from hiding corruption. It urged the nations at the top of the index to create public registers that would make clear who owns every company. Denmark already has such a measure, and Ukraine and the U.K. are in the process of creating one.

The index isn't without its critics. As Alex Cobham wrote in Foreign Policy last year, "The problem with the Index, however, can be found in the name. Perceptions are not facts, and in this case they may be an unhelpfully distorted reflection of the truth." And, as we noted while covering the organization's report in 2013, the index has been accused of an "elite bias."

But Transparency International says the index "is limited in scope, capturing perceptions of the extent of corruption in the public sector, from the perspective of business people and country experts."
CelebritiesPele Out Of Intensive Care by jamesw(op): 10:57am On Dec 03, 2014
Five days after his condition was described as “clinically unstable,” Brazilian football legend Pele was out of intensive care Tuesday and walking around as he recovers from a kidney problem.

“The patient … is doing well without medical complications. He is able to walk around his room,” the Albert Einstein clinic in Sao Paolo said in a statement.
“Following clinical analyses, resuming renal assistance was not necessary,” it added.

Media reports said Pele requested a guitar to strum as he continues his convalescence.

The clinic said 74-year-old Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known worldwide as Pele, is now receiving “semi-intensive” care but remains in the same bed as previously.

The hospital said further kidney tests will be conducted on Wednesday.

Pele was “lucid and eating well” without breathing difficulties while receiving antibiotics intravenously, the hospital said.

The clinic suspended renal assistance on Sunday, six days after the three-time world champion was admitted.

Initial tests showed that Pele, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, was suffering from a urinary infection requiring antibiotics.

Last Thursday, the hospital said the man nicknamed ‘O Rei’ (the king) had been placed in intensive care after his condition became “clinically unstable,” alarming his fans.

Some Brazilian media reported that Pele had septicemia, a blood infection, after he failed to respond to treatment.

But on Friday the clinic said he was responding to antibiotics while the star insisted via social media he had simply been moved to another room for more privacy.

Pele has only one kidney after the other was removed following complications from a rib injury he suffered while playing for the New York Cosmos in the 1970s, his agent Jose “Pepito” Fornos toldAFP over the weekend.

A hospital spokesman told AFP that Pele had received a flood of get-well-soon messages from well-wishers via social media.

And the GloboEsporte website said the former star was not just up and about but had asked for a guitar to be brought to his room.

Pele underwent kidney stone surgery in the same clinic on November 13 and was discharged two days later, joking to reporters that “I’m ready to play tomorrow” and winding down his car window to greet fans.

PoliticsAmaechi Has Laid A Solid Foundation For Me – Peterside by jamesw(op): 11:27pm On Nov 30, 2014
The All Progressives Congress, APC, 'anointed' governorship candidate in Rivers State, Hon. Dakuku Adol-Peterside took time over the weekend to pour encomiums on Governor Chibuike Amaechi stating that he has laid a formidable foundation of service delivery in the state.

He said there would have be no reason not to perform well if he emerged governor in the 2015 general elections.
Hon. Peterside stated this weekend while addressing supporters at Kono Waterfront shortly after he collected his Permanent Voter’s Card in Opobo Town, Ward 3.

He said, “I want to express appreciation to Governor Amaechi who made efforts to make Rivers State great. He was a visionary leader who came and transformed the state. He has laid a solid foundation for me.

“I am extremely surprised to meet you people of Kono here because, I didn’t contact anybody to gather you here to meet with me. But, I believe, you heard I was coming home and I will pass through this route to my town, Opobo that was why you decided to gather here to receive me. Let me remind you all that Kono and Opobo has been two neighbouring towns who share common interest. I am very sure that nearly every Opobo person has a family in Kono and I know that if I come to Kono, every Kono person will receive me into their homes. I think, this is a time that every Kono person should begin to kneel down and thank God for locating us”, Peterside said.

He also gave the indication that his administration, if voted into power, would eliminate poverty and build on the economic potentials of the state to achieve a better life for all Rivers People.

“When we assume power in 2015, I will wipe out poverty. I will ensure that the economic potentials are realistic in building a new Rivers State, and that I believe we can do with the help of God Almighty. All we need to do is to give our leadership immense support. We will build on the foundation of Governor Amaechi. In this journey, everybody has a role to play.

“Everything begins with a step and the first step you will take is to go and obtain your voters’ card. It is your power to determine your leaders in 2015. Don’t subject yourselves to any bribe. It will fail you from the determination of your future. I urge you all to play your part. Promise me that you will not disappoint me. Rivers people should trust me. I owe you people a responsibility to deliver”, He said.

The APC guber aspirant also promised Rivers people that he will make frantic efforts to attract investors to the state and ensure transparency in piloting the affairs of the state to the glory of God.

“I will attract investment opportunities to Rivers State. So, everybody will come and join us to develop the state. We will work with the fear of God. I am a son of God and I will account to God and man through transparency, decency, honesty. All of us must work together, our strength is our unity”, Peterside stated.

He charged the Kono youth vanguard and supporters of APC in Ogoniland to sensitize and enlighten their followers to massively vote him in the 2015 general elections.

Earlier at the ward 3 polling unit in Opobo town, Hon. Peterside said, the PVC is an important document that speaks volume about leadership put in place by the people and urged Rivers people to collect their PVCs and vote him in the 2015 governorship election.

“This is a very important civic duty and I want to encourage everybody to be part of it. Development of this nature rests on leadership. Rivers State needs the kind of leadership to accelerate development and by that we need to obtain our PVC to maintain the needed change. We want leaders who will pursue our desires and aspirations. Our leaders should see election as a necessary obligation to choose leaders that will build a great nation and that means selfless sacrifice.

“I urge all Rivers men and women who feel that we can develop on the foundation of Governor Amaechi to get their PVC’s and vote for us. We can build on that to develop our dream. With what I have seen today, if it is what is happening in other polling units across the state, then, we should say, INEC is working. And it means, votes will count”, Dakuku said.
