Obey court orders but investigate Judges for external influence.
Politics / Is Vission 202020 Dead? by jammiller: 12:04pm On Oct 01, 2016
The vision and dream to be amongst the 20 most developed economies of the world by the year 2020 may be suffering a huge set back at this time owing to economic misfortunes observed lately.

This present dispensation which will run till 2019 seems not no have it as an agenda.
With a huge drop in standard of living and average living wage, it seems we might slip further than where we are now by 2020.
Developments ranging from poor budget performance, crash in local currency value, drastic reduction in Direct Foreign Investment, etc seem to have come to stay.

Nigerians are currently facing most difficult times in her history and recent gains in average life expectancy are fast being eroding. Nigerians now die more than ever from hunger, extrajucial killings, militancy, terrorism, armed robbery, election violence and protests and etc.

Was this vission truely a reality?
Will this vission truely be a reality ?

Only TIME will tell.

Business / Solution To A Weak Nigerian Currency by jammiller: 5:53am On Aug 15, 2016
The pressure on the Nigeria is at an all time high and one wonders if there is a solution. This is write up is in response to a post here on Naira land https://www.nairaland.com/3287305/failed-naira-advice-federal-government and I wish to contribute my idea to a better Nigeria.

My posts are very controversial, but some of them are good. Like the write up on ‘Stimulating a stale economy on https://www.nairaland.com/2702992/stimulating-stale-economy#39532358

To ease pressure on the naira one must know what the Nigeria economy is and what we intend to achieve.

How is the Nigerian Economy:
The Nigerian economy is driven by an unrecognized sector, the small and medium entrepreneurs. These range from farmers who produce our foods, to petty traders, to artisans, to manual labourers, e.t.c. They are the ones that engage a larger percentage of the society hence we can’t have a Venezuelan situation as these people service the day to day need of the populace. But they soon face low but also continuous patronage when the big sectors face low activities. The Civil service, banks, telecommunication and multinationals that pay a lot only engage a fraction of the workforce.

What we intend to achieve:
I am sure what the major concern is a stable exchange rate and not the rate itself. If a dollar should sell for N500 to 1$, it should remain so and appreciate steadily over time. Investors, traders and the economy prefer a stable rate. You can imagine buying your goods for X amount today and be told it is now Y amount tomorrow and Z amount the day after. It makes it difficult to predict business which is bad for investment. This is one reason there is low foreign investment into the country lately.

But how do we ease pressure on the Naira?
The naira itself suffers just as Nigerians. For example: I step out In the morning to go to work, I gave the Taxi man N50 note who in turn gave it to another passenger as change who used it to by gala from a seller who gave it to another as change and the stress on the N50 note continues. It might be lucky not to get to the bear spot at night and finally into the hands of a, let me end it here. A naira not could be defaced as little as one week in circulation and the CBN has to mint and keep minting. I doubt if the cost of minting a N20 note is actually N20, and for how long does it last? I would encourage cashlessness. I would pay people who use P.O.S. I would introduce ‘Me to you mobile Money’ which helps to make transfer from one person to another using ATM card and BVN with like N20,000 max per transaction and say a daily limit of like N100,000. Such operators are scattered around like you recharge card sellers and get commission from the government for every transaction. If I go to my site to pay workers, I don’t need to go with cash; I could go with a ‘Me to you Mobile Money’ agent to pay my workers. This will help since the set of people who make massive transactions don’t have the time to queue at ATMs and may not be able to use them sometimes. The government spends less in minting money. That is huge savings in a year. This is to cut waste, let’s go back to the topic.

There are two approaches to the situation which can work together or independently.

1. Registering all businesses: Most businesses in Nigeria are not registered. For fear of paying taxes e.t.c many businesses operate hidden. Would you blame them? I may not. If you examine the cost of doing business today you would understand. You have to open a retail outlet for instance; you would have to rent a shop, fortify the shop against robbery, do business on bad road, provide your own electricity, e.t.c and you bear the cost alone. It might be tempting to want to share the gains with someone whom you think has not taken any risk. For this reason, so many businesses go through the back door to find forex for their transactions. To do this the government should introduce some incentives to SMEs to register their businesses and get legal and genuine access to forex. This could be in for of prolonged tax holidays, interest free bank loans, e.t.c to carter for the inconveniences they go through to start up a business. This will encourage a lot of businesses to register and if they can access Forex the right way, the parallel market will lose customers and pressure on Naira will fall a margin.

2. Use what you have: I am an Engineer by profession, a father by nature and an Economist by interest and face this every day. I have an abundance of rice I get at a very cheap rate, sometimes free of charge. But my kids can’t eat rice alone, they eat rice with beans and without beans they don’t eat well; but beans I don’t have. What do I do? Three different approaches. i: Encourage and force the children to eat only rice. The problem with this is that the kids start looking for beans through the back door if they can’t eat only rice. ii: By enough Beans so that the children can have it to eat rice anytime they want to eat. This is good but I may run out of cash to run my home, but my kids are healthy. They may even become wasteful as they find food every time. iii: Let the children have access to beans from any source but make them give up a portion of their abundant rice when they have beans. This is to introduce control and make your rice have value.
In this case, the rice is our Naira with which we buy and sell local goods, the beans is the dollar with which we buy foreign goods. This administration adopts the first option; previous administration adopted the second option. The third option is making sure there is enough dollar in circulation by allowing a free flow even through the banks but since Naira is the medium of exchange, every Non naira account should be considered as a business account and made to pay tax on deposit as applied to every businesses. The tax should be in Naira so that the account holder has to have Naira to run his non-naira account. Also, every dollar to dollar transaction is charged two sets of profit, one on the business gain and another on the currency value. With time, the dollar gradually loses its value as people now value the naira they lose in trading with the dollar.

I am able to find time to write this piece as I am out of job and have some spare time to sit at my desk and compose.
God bless Nigeria.

Politics / Should Election Results Matter In Nigeria And Africa? by jammiller: 12:34am On Aug 12, 2016
From the last general elections held here in Nigeria, total number of votes to the nearest ten million stood at 30.
This is less than 20% of our estimated population of 180million. The number of people that took part in the election is far less than voting population if even the voting population is considered and one wonders why there was so much heat when the larger majority is indifferent to who wins.

The United Kingdom European Union membership referendum, also known as the EU referendum within the United Kingdom, is a referendum that is scheduled to take place in the United Kingdom and Gibraltar on 23 June 2016. Membership of the European Union has been a topic of debate in the United Kingdom since before the country joined the European Economic Community (EEC, or the "Common Market"wink, as it was known then, in 1973.

Education / Why Obtain A Degree Where You Can't Work With It? by jammiller: 4:44pm On Jun 01, 2016
This is to those who travel out to obtain a degree and have to come back home to start looking for job.
It does not make any sense going to the UK for example which does not give you permit to work there in the country with their degree but accept even lesser degrees from other countries.
Many Nigerians pay high tuition fees to go to school abroad only to discover they can't get the required work permit to work in such countries even though they find a job and are qualified.

Politics / May 29th 2016; Change In My Life Today by jammiller: 2:28am On May 29, 2016
Below is a true life story of a friend.

Early 2015 and mixed reactions about the coming elections filled the office environment. Though we had jobs, we were hopeful of better ones when the economy gets better.

The question was about the future of Nigeria. At least everyone could agree on one thing “the present situation is bad”. What does the next four years hold for us? It all depends on who the winner of the election would be we all agreed. But we all knew it would not be easy, considering the nation’s current revenue base.

To cut a long story short, elections were held and a new dispensation started. I was happy to see there was no fight between my operations and general manager as the result were in favour of my GM’s choice candidate.

For the first few months after May 29th 2015 it was like the nation paused. I still remember my GM saying things needed to be accessed for thoroughness. Soon all contracts we had were put on hold and paying salaries became difficult as no revenue was coming in. Soon afterwards contracts started getting cancelled. Paying salaries became even more difficult. My MD quickly looked to the banks for loan. It didn’t take long before banks were hit with the economic realities and names of bank debtors were published not minding the state of the economy when these loans where collected. The right thing would have been to access how the economy had changed and the government intervenes. The banks couldn’t offer help. My GM started hiding his face; “I don’t understand this” he would tell us. Things got worse. In August My MD had to pull the trigger and let everyone go without salaries and terminal benefits as well. My GM retained his job. A new chapter of my life opened.

The hunt for another job already had started when contracts were being put on hold. Even with a Masters degree in Engineering, getting a job in the oil sector where I am well trained and experienced was more difficult than going to heaven. I quickly looked to other sectors but the results were the same. No jobs. The real face of life in Naija was gradually creeping into my home. I was still hopeful things would change, but things had already changed. I quickly withdrew my child from school, reduced meal quantity and quality to reduce cost of running the home while I kept on searching for a job. We soon became two searching as my wife had just finished school. What we would hear every day was news of mass sacking. I applied for every job I saw qualified or not, I gave my CV to everyone I knew. I gave CVs to virtually everyone I had conversation with, but there was no result. I was quick to conclude it was witch craft attack. I met with my Pastor who prayed for me. I think his prayers have kept me alive till today. Not understanding the situation around me anymore, I had to start looking for source of income for the family. Friends and family members were there as palliatives, but it was not enough to run a family of four.

I took my search to building sites. The year was ending and everyone was crying the economy was bad. You had to be known to be taken for any job at the few available working sites as many sites had stopped work. Since I had no special skill in that sector, I could only work as a helper. It added to what I could get from well wishers to run my family. I could go home sometimes with more than two thousand Naira at the end of the day’s work. I would search for another when work finished at one site. It sometimes took a week or two to get another as sites only got fewer by the day. It seemed like the country was coming to a conclusive stop.

The prices of food stuff started rising at the fasted rate since I became an adult. Thanks to the exchange rate, in few days prices would increase twice and I kept wondering what was going on. Even prices of locally made goods obeyed this upward increase. My little earnings soon became nothing. Sometimes we would go hungry at home. I had to look for another means of survival.

Soon the landlord came knocking early 2016. I was lucky to stumble miraculously into some good money from my savings when I was working. It was from my retirement savings. I paid him for the months I overstayed my rent and for which he was patient with me and moved to a smaller apartment, and with the rest I bought a taxi and became a cab driver.

It got better than being a helper at building sites. If I could keep my car in good condition, I was sure of between N2,500 and N4,000 daily. It would have been more but a chunk of a cab driver’s sweat in Nigerian goes to uniform men and park operators and I was not left out. I would give as much as N600 at three police check points along my route even though my vehicle documents were okay. They would use delay tactics to hold you down and if you don’t want your passengers to leave your vehicle you would have to pay and collect a number for that day. A bad day is considered as when you are caught by a police officer disobeying traffic laws. Some police officers took advantage of road with poorly marked cautions signs to extort monies from us. A cab driver for me still was better than being a helper at construction sites.

I soon found out I was not alone in this joblessness as I found so many graduates like me who’s daily bread are being threatened by change.

On the 16th of May 2016 I woke to see fuel was selling at N145 per liter. The whole business of cab driving was thrown into a state of confusion as passengers were not accepting any increase in taxi fare. All payments to park operators and uniform men remained; cost of buying fuel has almost doubled. Passengers are unwilling to share in this problem and to make matters worse, there are now a lot fewer passengers leaving motorist to scramble for the very few ones who still find reasons to come out of their house. I am on the road from morning till late and can’t come home with N2,000. All monies worked go into buying fuel. Sometimes I just don’t feel like going out but I spend the whole day thinking what would be next to hit me in this wave of change. I am now in search of a new means to survive under this.

I am appealing to good Nigerians who have job to please help. God bless you.

Politics / 2016 Appropriation Bill; The Way Forward. by jammiller: 5:04pm On Apr 23, 2016
Owing to the fact that a lot has happened to our economy lately, a minute delay in implementing the budget means people suffer more.
The ruling party is at war with itself and the whole nation is entangled in it.
To move forward regarding the budget, the executive must understand the masses hold them responsible more for governance failure that the legislature and must mellow in this quagmire.

First the head of the executive must berate those responsible for the delay in passing the budget and do so clean without fear or favour.
Second the head of the executive must cleave the indulgence of those regions who will be affected by the omissions in the budget.
Third the head of the executive must promise to make such omissions priority in the 2017 appropriation bill.

Then the head of the executive should go ahead and start the implementation process so that the suffering of over M170 Nigerians can be alleviated. We can't afford to be held hostage because of the war between a few people.

This is just a personal opinion.
Jobs/Vacancies / In Nigeria Today Both Graduates And Hustlers Don't Have Jobs by jammiller: 2:22am On Feb 29, 2016
Hustlers don't have a defined jobs.
Graduates can't find a defined jobs.
Graduates becoming hustlers.
In the next few years graduates will be equal to hustlers.

To those who say Nigerian graduates are unemployable:
There is nothing like an unemployable graduate. In a society with jobs, even a graduate with pass can find a less skilled job. If you studied in countries with jobs, you will find out that you as a Nigerian with good grades can't find jobs while citizens of such country with even less grades can get a good job. They can't provide jobs for you so they tell you you are not employable.

Not all graduates are entrepreneurs. Some are good business men while others are good managers. Creating jobs and not killing jobs should be a focus of good leadership.

Business / A Limit To Physical Cash One Can Handle by jammiller: 12:10am On Jan 23, 2016
Just like it is done in other countries, there has to be a limit to the amount of cash a single individual can handle at any point in time, say N500,000. The police should be given the mandate to confiscate any money above such amount found on an individual.

Due to the poor state of electronic banking in Nigeria, any genuine movement of physical cash above the physical cash limit should get clearance from the CBN.

This will help to inject more cash into the financial sector hence making more cash available for lending.
This will also help to reduce cash handling and looting.

Politics / Stimulating A Stale Economy by jammiller: 10:49pm On Oct 30, 2015
Dwindling revenue accrued to the federal government is no longer news. There is steady decline in revenue due to market slow down and if not checked could lead to recession if we are not in it already. These times might be here to stay for long, but the big question remains: “What is the way out?”
An economy has two major spendings; Government and private sector spending. They both complement each other. The government gets taxes in VAT, corperate taxes etc to boost their spending. The Private sector on the other hand benefit from government spending on infrastructure to enable them do and stay in business. But when there is a decline in revenue to both the government and the private sector certain steps are needed to stimulate growth:
1. Reduce taxation: A Relaxation of cooperate tax helps to keep more money in the private sector which employs a greater percent of the population. It helps to keep people in job; people who will pay the tax needed by the government.
2. Reduce and peg interest rates: If interest rates are reduced and pegged, banks and other financial institutions will be forced to lend as they will need to give out more cash to make same profit. This increases cash flow in the economy as cash hoarding is discouraged. Businesses have access to cheap credits and cash transactions and cash flow are maintained. This helps to sustain VAT and other taxes accrued to the government.
3. Reduce spending on recurrent expenditure: Bonuses and other non taxed constituents of salaries of politicians would have to be slashed or capped. Retrenchment is not a very viable option as it triggers fear in the market. This reduction is to take care of reduced revenue from taxation. Major government spendings should be geared towards further wealth creation.
4. Encourage patronage of home made products: The government must make sure that public institutions like healthcare, education, and every other needs sourced locally remain attractive to the public. Increasing duties on imported good is not the best but making sure local products compete favorably with foreign ones is surely better. Increasing excise and / or custom duties lead to unwanted inflation as people cannot be forced to buy what they don’t want if it does not meet standard.
5. Reduce cost of production: Security, power, transportation; all have direct effect on cost of production. These are basic areas government must spend effectively to reduce production cost.
6. Last but not the least: Pray. After putting all measures in place, pray for Almighty God to grant the nation success.

Politics / Nigerian Elders Are Behind Nigerian Youths Are Not Prepared For Leadership by jammiller: 5:49am On Oct 14, 2015
This post is to explain the reasons why Nigerian Youths Are Not Prepared For Leadership from the link: https://www.nairaland.com/2649780/nigeria-youths-not-prepared-leadership.

The British gave a fertile Nigeria to a good mixture of Nigerian youths and elders at independence who have become elders and heroes past today. They are not so difficult to remember if you are a youth today but I fear the offspring of today youth will not remember them as they have arguably left nothing behind.
How are our today Nigerian elders responsible for Nigeria Youths Are Not Prepared For Leadership?
-They constantly want to remain in power claiming Nigeria youths are not prepared for leadership.
-They think the youth should suffer because they suffered.
-They make you fear them, bow to them and worship forgetting that leadership is not in slavery but freedom. You must call them "Oga" or you are disrespectful.
-They also forget the youth is suppose to be the driver while they the elders direct. They have chosen to drive and direct while the youth watch.
-They continuously alter their age to stay in job depriving youth jobs and making the system full of aged brains. Have you ever had an elder as a boss? He tells you "you want to come and take my job isn't it?".
-They say the youth can't correct them even when they go wrong because they are older.
-They loot for unborn generation.
-They make the youth hungry by not showing them how to fend for themselves.

Today youths will eventually end up like today elders and the circle continues.

Please feel free to correct or add yours.
Politics / Buying Of Forms And Scratch Cards For Job Legal? by jammiller: 5:52am On Oct 05, 2015
Government institutions do these acts of public extortion the most. There is already a site where you can register for their jobs, but they make you buy scratch cards and pay for forms to access it. Even institutions of higher learning are not left out. Scratch cards for jamb, waec, neco just name it. The list is endless.
Can anyone tell me why Nigerians have to pay for all these? Does it mean you can't apply for jobs when you don't have money?
Politics / Re: Subsidy On Petrol Falls To N576m Daily by jammiller: 4:54am On Oct 05, 2015
Also contributing to this is a drop in consumption. Many people can no longer fuel cars and generators as the economy is so bad due to low income. The government should come up with a true graph of consumption and importation. The relative improvement in power supply also contributes to drop in consumption, but most of all, the economy is in decline as so many people are out of work and can't afford to live luxurious life anymore lately.

Politics / How Long Should It Take For Pot Holes To Surface On A Newly Constructed Road? by jammiller: 7:12pm On Oct 03, 2015
You have to surfer from very bad roads not tarred. Vehicles get damaged and you spend hard earned money on repairs. To God be the glory a contract is awarded and another round of suffering from traffic during construction starts. At least you are happy as there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. Most times the road construction is complete and you enjoy smooth ride. But it does not last. Soon afterwards pot holes start to surface. I know of a tarred road where I grew up. I grew up to meet it tarred. For expansion purpose, a reconstruction contract was awarded. The road was tarred but soon afterwards the newly tarred road became worse as the new layer gradually washed off leaving the layer I grew up to meet. A state governor assumes office, tars a road and pot holes surface while he is still in office. Sometimes a road is construction is ongoing and you find pot hole surfacing at the beginning when construction is not even complete yet.
I need answer to this question: How long should it take for pot holes to surface on a newly constructed road?
Please help.

Very annoying when fuel runs out and the gen has to stop. Do you know there are certain noise levels that are not good for your health? Noise is not good for children, especially generator noise; part of the reason for poor academic performance, wild and aggressive behaviors. You need to get to some road junctions and hear constant loud music all day. The government has to do something by introducing restrictions till power supply becomes constant; only God knows when. Those who disobey such should be charged for breaching of public peace.

This post is coming this early because I can't sleep from the the hell of noise from generators in my area. When another puts his on, we rush to close our windows from smoke that fill our apartment like where a diesel truck is trying to start. What happens when we are deep asleep with windows open, we'd probably be dead. Many families have died because of this. I am for ban on generator operations from 11pm to 6am; at least in residential areas to save lives as NEPA won't help.
