Travel / Borno Dam Collapse: FG Opens IDP Camps As Flood Submerges 70% Of Maiduguri by JAOS(m): 9:23am On Sep 11
Thousands of Maiduguri inhabitants have been displaced, with the Nigerian Correctional Service recapturing three inmates after a jailbreak, while 80 per cent of animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park zoo died as Borno State suffered its most devastating flood disaster in 30 years, The PUNCH reports.

Following the disaster, President Bola Tinubu, who’s currently abroad, called for the immediate evacuation of residents in communities overtaken by floods.

Seventy per cent of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, has been submerged by the fast-moving waters, according to the National Emergency Management Agency, while the flood also ravaged other major city locations, including the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, the state secretariat, post office, cemetery, Lagos Area, Bulabulin, Gwange, Monday Market, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and Kofar Shehu.

Some locations that I personally know and consider to be high ground, from the report we received, are already underwater, including Lagos Street, the market area, the palace of the Shehu of Borno, at least the front of the palace, we can see water there,” NEMA spokesman, Manzo Ezekiel, told The PUNCH.

About 70 per cent of the town is already underwater. So, many people are trapped as the flood intensified when people were sleeping; some people woke up to discover that they were inside water.”

The NEMA spokesperson said Borno’s flat ground geology made it easier for water to flow into passage areas in Maiduguri city, adding that the flood began after the Alau Dam overflowed following heavy rains.

The overflow of the main source of the dam in Borno State, called Alau Dam, has brought the city to be underwater since last weekend. So, our attention now and our energy are geared towards providing necessary support, by way of search and rescue, and supporting people that have been impacted. That is what we are doing now.”

Manzo said NEMA could not ascertain the number of displaced people as at the time of filing this report, but estimated that with about 70 per cent of the town underwater, then about 70 per cent of the over 800,000 Maiduguri residents might have been affected.

Displaced persons relocated

State government efforts to relocate displaced residents were ongoing, according to the NEMA spokesperson, who added that three Internally Displaced People Camps had been opened to accommodate those affected.

“Our search and rescue team are already working with the state officials of the state emergency management agency, providing support to people affected by the flood. By the way, what is happening in Maiduguri is something that was not envisaged, and that it will be to this extent. The flooding has exceeded the forecast made because of what is happening in Maiduguri today (Tuesday).”

Manzo said city residents moved to a higher ground when the initial flood happened in Gwangi. However, the higher ground has been overtaken by water, leading the state government to open the Bakasi Camp, a bigger area, for people to move into.

“Our team is on ground there, and we are working with the state emergency management agency to provide the necessary support, and to save lives from the flooding,” Manzo added.

Initially, about three camps were open in Gwangi, but with this situation now, people have moved to join their relations on the higher ground, and those that do not have relations in the higher part of the town, have moved to Bakasi Camp.”

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency described the flooding as terrible.

The Director-General of the agency, Barkindo Muhammad, said, “We went for a rescue and proceeded to distribute sandbags in Gozari. As I am talking to you now (on the telephone) I am trapped; we came to rescue some people and we are now trapped.”

Already, several institutions and government agencies have shut down, with the University of Maiduguri closed until further notice

“Homes are submerged, schools shut down & businesses crippled as people evacuate with their belongings,” UNCHR Nigeria stated on its X handle.

Floods have killed at least 229 people so far this year, displaced around 386,239 more and affected 94,491 houses in parts of the country but mainly in the northern region. At least 125,805 hectares of farmland have also been affected, NEMA figures showed.

Tinubu intervenes

President Tinubu expressed deep concerns over the flooding in Maiduguri and tasked relevant government agencies to expedite rescue efforts.

“While relevant authorities are still assessing the damage wrought by the flood, the President calls for the immediate evacuation of people from affected areas,” a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

“President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the State, especially to the families that have lost their means of livelihood due to the disaster triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam.

“President Tinubu assures Governor Babagana Zulum that the Federal Government is ready to collaborate to address the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected people.

“He orders the National Emergency Management Agency to assist the flood victims.”

Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Maiduguri Tuesday to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of the devastating floods, The PUNCH learnt.

Shettima directed government agencies to provide immediate relief to the affected communities.

“During his visit, the Vice President is expected to assess the extent of the damage, interact with the displaced residents, and oversee the ongoing relief efforts. He will also hold meetings with state and local government officials to coordinate a comprehensive response plan,” the statement added.

Also, in a statement, former leader Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume, also sympathised with the people of Borno, following the devastating flood.

Ndume, who represents Borno South, said, “What has happened in my dear state capital, Maiduguri, is unfortunate. The level of damage is very bad. I’ve been briefed, and what I’ve heard isn’t something we should take likely.”

“Homes, institutions, government agencies, and other businesses have been submerged in the flood. Many people are trapped and are trying to evacuate. I’m worried that the situation may get worse unless the Federal Government immediately steps in to assist the state government in salvaging the situation.”

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abass on Tuesday, called on the FG to urgently provide relief materials to Maiduguri residents affected by the flood.

In a statement by his Special Adviser, Media, Musa Krishi, Abbas called for collective intervention to assist victims of the natural disaster.

He said, “I am disturbed by the news of the ravaging flood in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. This is a situation that calls for concern to every well-meaning Nigerian.

“I call on all government agencies responsible for providing quick intervention in times of such emergencies to swing into action for the sake of the affected people.”

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, also conveyed the government’s sympathy to the victims of the flooding.

“The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, is acutely aware of the magnitude of the challenges posed by this disaster.

“He has since directed all the relevant ministries and agencies to collaborate with the Borno State Government in mobilising the necessary resources to provide urgent relief and assistance to those affected by the unfortunate incident,” Idris said.

The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar called on the Federal Government relief agencies to accelerate their efforts to address the impact of the Borno flooding, which he described as “catastrophic.”

“This deluge has ravaged farms and plunged a significant portion of Maiduguri into an urgent humanitarian crisis. I am also informed by available statistics from NEMA that recent floods have damaged approximately 16,488 hectares of farmland across 27 states; destroyed 32,000 houses, and impacted no less than 227,000 people.

“I earnestly implore the pertinent federal relief agencies to expedite their efforts in mitigating the effects of this calamity. My heart goes out to the people and government of Borno State government as they grapple with the profound economic repercussions of this disaster,” the former Vice President said.

Jailbreak

Reports say over 200 inmates escaped from the Maiduguri correctional facility after a portion of the facility’s parameter fence was pulled down in the aftermath of the flood.

The floodwaters ravaged the facility’s security, damaged barriers and weakened its structure, leading to the escape of the inmates, The PUNCH learnt.

The spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service Borno Command, Bala Adamu, confirmed the jailbreak to The PUNCH. He stated that following a manhunt for the escapees, three were recaptured on Tuesday.

“We are still assessing the number of inmates who escaped from the prison. As of now, we have recaptured three of the escapees,” Adamu told The PUNCH.

Meanwhile, the NCoS said it was taking decisive measures to manage the fallout from its Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri.

The NCoS spokesperson, Umar Abubukar, said the service had launched an emergency plan that included evacuating inmates to safer facilities, coordinating with security and emergency agencies for support, and ensuring continuous operation of its services.

Abubukar noted that the NCoS officials were working diligently to manage the situation and secure the safe transfer of inmates.

He stated, “As the agency responsible for the safekeeping of inmates, we want to assure the public that we are taking all necessary measures to ensure public safety; evacuate inmates to a safer facility; ensure smooth operations; and collaborate with sister security and relevant agencies in providing support and assistance to those affected

“Contrary to initial reports, the officers and men of the command are working to ensure a smooth and secure transfer process

“We appreciate the support and guidance from the Presidency and the Vice President’s visit to Maiduguri to assess the situation.

“We will continue to provide updates, and will like to assure the public that the NCoS is committed to maintaining order and ensuring public safety during this challenging time.”

The flooding has forced a shutdown of businesses in Maiduguri as residents battle to relocate to safe locations.

In the Kofar Shehu Area, where the Shehu of Borno resides, The PUNCH learnt that the flood was intense, as residents, including the Shehu, scampered for safety, leaving behind valuables.

“The Shehu was taken out this morning after the water became uncontrollable. I heard they took him to Government house,” a resident, Kuda Alhassan, said. “The water came unexpectedly, there was no information, until we heard later that the water was released (from the dam) in the middle of the night.”

A pregnant woman, Nafisat Mujahid, expressed safety concerns due to her delivery date.

“I have antenatal this week, and my delivery date is scheduled for this month. Now, I heard that the flood has ravaged the hospital I use and others. I am in fear,” she said.

Also, a businessman in Monday Market, Illiyasu Muhammad, said he lost everything, blaming the government for not informing residents of the decision to release water from the dam.

My goods are all gone. I sell biscuits in cartons, sweets and body soaps. The shop is locked but the goods  are damaged.

We were not informed that there will be a release of the water over the night. I would have at least packed out my goods, now I’m left stranded. I just hope government will come to our aid,” he said.

While NEMA hasn’t been able to ascertain the number of lives lost, the management of the biggest zoo in the city said 80 per cent of their animals died from the catastrophe.

Some deadly animals have been washed away into our communities, like crocodiles and snakes,” the Sanda Kyarimi Park zoo said in a statement.

“The General Manager, Borno State Museum Park, wish to announce that the recent flood disaster has disrupted and caused damage to properties and loss of lives of more than 80 per cent of the animals.”

The Arewa Consultative Forum expressed deep condolences to Nigerians, especially, northerners, over the devastating floods that have ravaged the region.

“The floods have brought unprecedented challenges to our people, who are already grappling with economic and security issues,” Prof. Tukur  Muhammad-Baba, National Publicity Secretary of ACF, said in a statement issued in Kaduna on Tuesday.

“We mourn the lives lost and pray for the quick recovery of those injured,” he added.

The forum urged public emergency response agencies, humanitarian bodies and first responders to provide immediate assistance to affected communities.

“We urge them to act swiftly and provide aid, including food, shelter, healthcare, and safe drinking water.”

Party dissolves excos in Oyo, Bauchi, Gombe, Benue, Taraba

by Kunle Oderemi

 September 6, 2024

As Nigerians writhe under the pain of the latest hike in the pump price of petrol, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has blamed the situation on the mismanagement of the national economy by the national economy by the All Progressives Congress (APC) federal administration.

Rising from an emergency meeting of its national working committee (NWC) held in Abuja on Thursday, the party strongly criticised the sharp increase in the price of petrol to N1000 per litre with the excruciating hardship among the people.

The NNPP slammed the government over what it described as the handling of the national economy, which the party said was manifesting “gross incompetence” by the APC government and further dragging hapless Nigerians into deeper poverty.

“From poor policy direction that has caused the people sleepless nights over the high cost of living, we are now in double jeopardy on account of a sharp increase in the price of petrol which will definitely lead to an increase in inflation and will drag the people of Nigeria into further poverty.

“This is nothing short of gross incompetence by a rudderless administration,” the party stated.

Meanwhile, the party has dissolved the state executive committees of Taraba, Benue, Oyo, Bauchi, and Gombe states.

This was part of the resolutions of the NWC meeting, which the national publicity secretary of the NNPP, Mr Ladipo Johnson, explained in a statement was part of measures to reposition and revitalise the party in the affected states.

The party said the state excos will be replaced with caretaker committees in line with the constitution of the party.

“By virtue of Article 14.2.1(iv, v) and 15.2.1(xvi) of the party’s constitution as amended on the 6th April 2024, the National Working Committee of the party is cloaked with the powers and has on this day, 5th September 2024, dissolved the entire executive structures from state down to ward level of the party in Taraba, Benue, Oyo, Bauchi, and Gombe states.

“The dissolved executive committees shall, in accordance with the party’s constitution, be replaced by caretaker committees, which will be announced in a few days for the stipulated period of time,” the NNPP stated.

It thanked the outgone state executives for their service to the party and urged them to be ready to serve in other capacities in the future.

It further noted that after an extensive evaluation of all the other state executives nationwide, the NWC was satisfied that they were legally and morally ready to conduct the local government elections in their states.

He said the Kano State executive in particular was well-constituted to undertake the crucial local council election with “a very high standard of leadership and effectiveness as backed by law.”

Crime / Nigerian Shi'ites Accuse Police Chief, FCT Commissioner Of Blasphemy by JAOS(m): 9:21am On Sep 06
The sect accused the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and FCT Police Commissioner, Benneth Igweh of subjecting their female members arrested on Sunday, August 25 during the 2024 Abuja Arba'een Symbolic Procession, to public ridicule and embarrassment by forcefully removing their hijab.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as ‘Shi'ites’ has petitioned the European Union, United Nations and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the alleged forceful removal of Muslim women’s hijab and alleged blasphemy against Islam.

A petition sent to the organisations dated September 4, 2024 and signed by Fatima Aliyu Adam on behalf of the Academic Forum of the movement, called for a forensic investigation into the forceful removal of Muslim women’s hijab by the FCT Police on August 26, 2024 in a viral video.

The letter noted that the case of Nigerian police officers parading Muslim women without hijab in the FCT Police Command, as well as the subsequent broadcast of pictures and videos from the scene was an insult not just to the victims but Islam as a whole.

The sect pointed out that the actions of the two senior police officers is tantamount to blasphemy Islam in Nigeria, which is capable of causing crisis and conflicts in the country.

The letter reads, “We are writing to bring to the attention of the Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, the case of the forceful removal of the hijab of Muslim sisters detained by the FCT police. The incident happened twice, while in detention and while parading the Muslim sisters to the newsmen.

“The Muslim sisters were seriously abused while in detention, and some of the abuses were captured by a one-minute, twenty-one-second video taken by a police officer within the premises of the FCT Police Command and shared in a WhatsApp group of the police community in the FCT Abuja, and later on 26 August 2024 the video went viral on social media.

“The video shows how the police forcefully removed the hijab of our Muslim sisters while in police detention. The Muslim sisters were arrested on Sunday, 25 August during the 2024 Abuja Arba'een Symbolic Trek, an annual religious procession in commemoration of the assassination of Imam Hussaini (AS), grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).

“We are to further draw the attention of the Executive Secretary to pictures of people arrested during the 2024 Abuja Abra'een Symbolic Trek paraded by the police on 28 August 2024 to newsmen at SARS Abattoir. The pictures taken by the newsmen also showed our Muslim sisters without hijab.

“Hijab has a rich history and significance in Islam, with roots in the Qur’an and sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).

“This case of Nigerian police officers deliberately parading Muslim sisters without hijab in the FCT Police Command, as well as the subsequent broadcast of pictures and videos from the scene, is an insult to not just the victims but Islam as a whole. This case happened while Benneth Igweh is serving as FCT Commissioner of Police.

“Respect for Muslim sisters to wear hijab is their constitutional right, and this was upheld by the Supreme Court in Lagos State Govt. and Ors v. Asiyat Abdulkareem in 2022, and the police actions in terms of denial of rights to necessary clothing to the arrested Muslim sisters were in conflict with various Nigerian judicial provisions as contained in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA, 2015).

“Presently, the police have detained more than 100 people at the notorious police detention facility, SARS Abattoir, Garki, by Guzape Junction, Abuja. Those being detained include 55 women and children, 2 babies, and two nursing women.

“Certainly, forceful removal of hijab is an abuse not to the Muslim sisters arrested but to entire Muslims and blasphemy against Islam.”

The organisation said it is pertinent to state that for a “public officer to blaspheme Islam in Nigeria is capable of causing discontent, unpredictable predicaments, and conflict”.

“You may wish to recall that previous hijab issues led to heated debates, violence, and even school closures.

It said, “This letter serves as a petition against Kayode Egbetokun, the IGP, and Benneth Igweh, AIG, for blasphemy against Islam.

“We therefore demand a forensic investigation into the forceful removal of Muslim Sisters hijab by the FCT Police to unravel the perpetrators of this taboo, which is capable of igniting a crisis in the country in order to avoid its reoccurrence."

Politics / Why NNPCL Filling Stations Adjusted Prices, By Experts by JAOS(m): 9:47am On Sep 04
September 4, 2024 by Muyiwa Lucas, Okwy Iroegbu-Chikezie, Alao Abiodun and John Ofikhenua, Abuja
Why NNPCL filling stations adjusted prices, by experts
Action a betrayal , says NLC
On the day Dangote Refinery commenced the supply of petrol with a promise to make the product available in the market in 48 hours, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited filling stations adjusted their meters to reflect new prices.

This action was amid a long-running scarcity of the product across the country.

There was no word from the national oil company on the new price regime.

The company only later in the day denied issuing a city-by-city price template which was circulating on social media.

Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) spokesman Ukadike Chinedu said NNPCL had not officially informed members about the price increase.

He said depot owners and marketers were awaiting further directives from the company.

Experts, however, gave reasons the oil giant might have effected the price change.

Petrol which sold for N568 at NNPCL filling stations in Lagos went for N855 per litre.

In Abuja where it sold for N617, the oil firm’s filling stations moved the price to N897.

The upward review came after NNPCL at the weekend admitted owing suppliers $6 billion, as a result of which they were reluctant to make the product available to them.

The company warned that the situation could result in its inability to make the product available to Nigerians.

The firm’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Umar Ajiya previously said the NNPCL was taking care of the shortfall in the supply system and was selling petrol at half the landing cost.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) rejected the new price.

It called for its immediate reversal.

NLC President Joe Ajaero in a statement described the increase as a “betrayal” after the Federal Government promised no pump price hike as a condition for the N70,000 minimum wage.

Other marketers jacked up prices to N897 per litre following NNPCL’s adjustment – by over 30 per cent.

The Minister of State (Petroleum) Heineken Lokpobiri denied that the Federal Government directed NNPCL to peg fuel prices at N1,000.

His media adviser Nnemaka Okafor described the reports as “blatantly false and malicious claims regarding petroleum pricing directive.”

“The Ministry of Petroleum Resources does not, and will not, interfere in the internal decisions of NNPCL, including pricing matters,” he said.

Some stakeholders said the increase was unavoidable.

They believe it will help alleviate the subsidy burden on both the Federal Government and the NNPCL.

An oil and gas consultant, Henry Adigun, said while the price increase was a step towards addressing the subsidy issue, it did not resolve the need for total deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector.

“Unless market prices align with international product prices, NNPCL will remain the sole importer,” Adigun said.

He welcomed the commencement of petrol production by Dangote Refinery but noted that supply would hinge on favourable market conditions.

‘Subsidy would have grown to N10t by the end of the year’

Managing Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Dr Muda Yusuf, urged Nigerians to show understanding with the Federal Government in this “difficult period”.

According to him, the government was subsidising every litre of petrol with about N500 while the product sold for between N610 to N700.

He warned that subsidy payment would have risen to between N8 trillion and N10 trillion at the end of the year should the country continue on that trajectory.

Yusuf said: “The subsidy figure rose to this level because of the depreciation of the naira as all the petroleum products consumed locally are imported.

Read Also: UPDATED: NNPCL adjusts petrol pump price to N897/L

“Secondly, the price of the products locally and the West African sub-region had widened and it is sold at an equivalent of between N1300 to N1500 per litre.

“The incentive for smuggling is very high and with our huge porous border and waterways largely unmanned there is little or nothing those entrusted with that duty can do.

“In this scenario, the government was not only subsidising her citizens but the whole of the West African sub-region up to the Central African Republic.

“This is part of the dilemma the government is faced with.”

To him, there is a possibility the government will be subsidising petrol to an extent with the new price of N855 per litre.

Yusuf said: “This must be a tipping point for the government as it was almost going bankrupt. This much the NNPC admitted with the over $6 billion debt.

“The situation in which we have found ourselves is not palatable to either citizens or the private sector because of the high cost of operation.”

He expressed optimism that Dangote Refinery and others in the pipeline will help the government ensure the pump price does not go beyond this.

Yusuf called on the government to roll out fiscal policies that would enable citizens to transit to other energy uses such as CNG, LPG, renewable energy solutions and wind power.

He said: “We need to subsidise this so that people can move away from fossil fuel. Again government do not have any choice now but to adopt an effective logistics and transportation strategy to ensure that products get to the people on time unlike now where it takes between one to two weeks to get petroleum products to other cities across the country due to the collapse of the railway and rusted pipelines.

“All these no doubt increase the cost. I will only appeal to Nigerians to be a little more patient as the government is no doubt on the right track to grow the economy.”

Black marketers in Abuja sold petrol in 10-litre containers for N13,000.

Despite the hike, retail outlets recorded endless queues that increased transport fares.

Kubwa bus stop to Byazhin Across that was N300 by tricycle rose to N500.

Kubwa to Berger which was previously N600 soared to N800 while Kubwa to Nyanya which was N800 rose to N1,000.

NLC demands reversal

NLC said it felt betrayed by the Federal Government following the latest increase in the pump price of petrol.

In a statement by Ajaero, the Labour Centre urged the government to reverse the increase in prices.

Ajaero said the organs of the NLC would meet in the coming days and decide on its next move.

He said: “We are filled with a deep sense of betrayal as the Federal Government clandestinely increases the pump price of PMS.

“One of the reasons for accepting N70,000 as the national minimum wage was the understanding that the pump price of PMS would not be increased even as we knew that N70,000 was not sufficient.

“We recall vividly when Mr President gave us the devil’s alternatives to choose from: either N250,000 as minimum wage (subject to the rise of the pump price between N1,500 and N2,000) and N70,000 (at old pms rates), we opted for the latter because we could not bring ourselves to accept further punishment on Nigerians.

“But here we are, barely one month after and with the government yet to commence payment of the new national minimum wage, confronted by a reality we cannot explain.

“It is both traumatic and nightmarish.

“Yet, when we told the government that its approach to resolving the fuel subsidy contradictions was patently faulty and would not last, its front-row cheerleaders sneered at us, saying we did not understand basic economics.”

SaharaReporters learnt that this move by the filling stations was in compliance with a directive given by the NNPC management compelling an immediate increment of fuel official price from N568 to N855.

Filling stations owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) have hiked the fuel price to over N850 per litre in the country.

SaharaReporters learnt that this move by the filling stations was in compliance with a directive given by the NNPC management compelling an immediate increment of fuel official price from N568 to N855.

Checks by SaharaReporters in Ilorin, Kwara State showed that the filling stations on Tuesday morning complied with the directive on the increment.

An NNPC station located at Adewole Area of Ilorin, the state capital is currently selling fuel at N877 per litre.

A picture of an NNPC station in Lagos which SaharaReporters saw indicated total compliance with the directive as the new price is pegged at N855 in the state.

A viral video on X showed how Nigerians are lamenting the new price.

“N855 at NNPC station in Ikoyi area (Lagos State),” a customer said in the video.

Nnpc have adjusted their pump price now!!
Posted as received just now!
My driver just informed me that they stopped selling at Mobil to adjust pump price.
This video confirms it all!

Another picture trending online showed that the fuel is being sold at N897 in some NNPC filling stations in the northern parts of the country. SaharaReporters observed further that many privately owned filling stations stopped selling fuel on Tuesday morning. This indicated that they were planning to increase their prices as well. “NNPCL mega station in Gombe are selling fuel at N930/liter. Most of the filling stations in Gombe metropolitan are closed at the moment!,” a resident, Ibrahim wrote on X.

Politics / Our Reforms Will Lead To Economic Growth, Says Tinubu by JAOS(m): 7:34am On Sep 04
Nigeria-China sign MoUs on power, rail construction

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday said his administration remained committed to sustainable growth through the effective implementation of ongoing economic reforms.

The President made the remark at a meeting with Chinese President, Xi Jinping, in Beijing, China, said his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement.

“We believe that President Xi has demonstrably reformed the Chinese economy, and our reform programme in Nigeria is on a similar course. I am a reformer with verifiable antecedents.

“We have recognised the need to reform our economy; we are doing so diligently across tax and tariff reviews, and to other segments of our nation’s economy.

“Trading and investment partners will have easy access to bring in their investments and seamlessly take their resources out,”
the President stated.

Also yesterday, Memoranda of Understanding were signed between Nigeria and China to strengthen the partnership between them.

Presidents Tinubu and Jinping watched as Minister of Budget and National Planning Atiku Badugu signed on behalf of Nigeria while Chairman, China National Development and Reform Commission, Mr. Zhang Shanjie signed for his country.

Jinping noted the strong mutual understanding between Nigeria and China since the establishment of diplomatic ties over the past 50 years.

“We have found the path of seeking collective strength, through unity, and win-win cooperation.

“China and Nigeria, as major developing countries, strengthening strategic coordination, will inject fresh impetus to China-Africa relations in the new era and spearhead common progress among Global South countries,”
Jinping said.

According to the Chinese leader, the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, scheduled to hold between today and Friday, provides an opportunity to reflect on mutual friendships and advance the consolidation of China-Africa relations.

He pledged that China and Nigeria would continue to work closely within the FOCAC framework as a model of cooperation between nations.

President Tinubu will speak in his capacity as Chairman of Authority of Heads of States on behalf of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS).

Tinubu vows to complete Ibadan-Abuja-Kaduna-Kano railway project

President Tinubu yesterday gave assurances that the Ibadan-Abuja-Kaduna-Kano railway project would be completed to the satisfaction of Nigeria and West Africa at large.

Tinubu said this during a visit to the headquarters of China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) in Beijing, a statement by Ngelale, said.

“It is equally very important that we give assurances to the Nigerian people across our local communities that the Ibadan-Abuja-Kaduna-Kano railway segments will be completed and done to the satisfaction of Nigeria and West Africa at large.

“We will support your investment in solid minerals and other ventures in Nigeria. I am here to assure you that Nigeria is ready to do business with you,”
the President assured Mr Dai Hegen, the Chairman of CRCC.

“The Abuja-Kaduna Railway and Lagos-Ibadan Railway have transported approximately nine million passengers and 180 tonnes of cargo. The Lagos blue line has transported over 1.6 million passengers,” Hegen said.

Similarly, President Tinubu visited Huawei Technologies’ Beijing Research Centre, where the company announced the launch of DigiTruck, a mobile ICT classroom aimed at enhancing digital literacy in underserved Nigerian communities.

During the President’s meeting with Huawei’s leadership, led by Mr Liang Hua, Chairman of the Board of Directors, the company said the initiative would operate in 10 states annually, training at least 3,000 students each year.

He acknowledged the ongoing efforts by Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to train three million technical talents (3MTT).

Hua said the 3MTT programme was targeted at equipping the country’s young population with the skills necessary for present and future economic opportunities.

Hua lauded President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for identifying digital technology as a critical driver of economic growth.

He said Huawei was prepared to offer its ICT expertise and partner the Nigerian government to support the country in achieving its policy objectives and further its digital, intelligent, and low-carbon development.

Mr Chris Lu, Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Nigeria, expressed support for Nigeria’s National Talent Export Programme (NATEP), an initiative that seeks to position Nigeria as a hub for talent outsourcing in Africa.

“We hope to continuously develop the NOC and expand its capacity so that it can meet the requirements of more African markets, thus facilitating more Nigerian technology talents in serving more overseas’ markets and helping to achieve the goal of NATEP,” Lu said.

FG signs MoU with Chinese firm to assembly electric tricycles, establish first renewable energy academy in Nigeria

The Federal Government also signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with a Chinese Company, Mutual Commitment Company (MCC) Limited.

The MoU was facilitated by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), an agency of the Federal Ministry of Power.

Representing Nigeria were the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, and the Managing Director of REA, Mr Abba Aliyu.

Adelabu said the signing of the MoU would go down as a memorable event for Nigeria.

He congratulated the REA and the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), saying that the MOU would enable Nigeria to achieve it’s vision for the renewable energy sub-sector of the entire electricity sector value chain.

Adelabu said the MoU signing is important for several factors.

He stressed: “I know Nigeria and China have a lot of things in common, one of which is the fact that Nigeria and China are both high population countries and with a country with high population, you have so much pressure. The first pressure is that of energy access and the second being job creation.

“So, when you take steps to achieve both, it is a thing of joy. I am particularly happy that this is happening during the tenure of President Bola Tinubu, as it is in line with achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration.”

The minister said the President had prioritised the power sector as the driver for all other critical sectors of the economy and, “ he is giving us all the support to ensure we deliver on his electoral promises”.

He noted that energy access and expansion are government’s major priorities because nothing can be achieved without strong, stable, functional and reliable electricity sector.

Adelabu added: “ We have relied so much on centralization of our power sector for so long that it is not taking us anywhere”.

The Minister said MCC is presently engaged in Nigeria with the construction of 12megawatts and three megawatts power plants in Maiduguri and Kaduna respectively.

Vice Chairman of MCC, Yan Zhezhu, who spoke through an interpreter, lauded the power minister’s commitment to Nigeria’s energy growth.

He said: “We are not new to Nigeria, having started in Oyo State a long time ago. Presently, we have ongoing projects in Maiduguri and Kaduna and we appreciate the cooperation we have so far received. Our projects have seen us working with states and the Federal Government in Nigeria and we are committed to do more”.

The National grid on Monday hit a record high of 5,313 megawatts, a record high in the last three years.

On the heels of this, the minister called on the Distribution Companies to make use of the opportunity to take more energy to prevent grid collapse as frequency drops, when power is produced and not picked by the DISCOs.

He said efforts would be made to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy.

However, a top official of one of the DISCOs in the country said the companies are finding it difficult to pick the extra energy being produced because, “ we are not happy with the tariff on other bands apart from Band A.”

He added: “As it is now, we are basically operating at a loss. Yes, they supply more power, but this problem could be solved with improved tariff for the other bands and more meter penetration to recover cost.”
