Billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, also known as Evans loses in court once again. The Court of Appeal in Lagos dismissed three appeals by the suspect who was seeking to stop his trial at two high courts in Lagos State, Daily Post reports. Evans had approached the appellate court to challenge the jurisdiction of the lower courts in the State to continue his trial. However, a three-man panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Jummai Sankey held that Evans’ appeals against the Ikeja High Court were without merit. Other Justices on the panel were: Justice Philomena Ekpe and Justice Muhammed Mustapha. In the three appeals, the suspected kidnapper challenged the High Courts’ jurisdiction and sought to strike out and quash the kidnap, attempted murder and murder charges filed by the government against him. In the first appeal against the ruling of Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja High Court, the first to fourth respondents were: the Lagos State Government and Evans’ co-defendants; Joseph Emeka, Chiemeka Arinze and Udeme Upong Justice Taiwo, on November 10, 2017, dismissed Evans’ application seeking to quash an amended seven-count charge against him, dated October 26, 2017. The applicant also challenged the Ikeja High Court’s jurisdiction in the second appeal, where the respondents were the same. The appellate court consolidated both appeals as Justice Sankey held: In the third appeal, the first to fifth respondents were Lagos State and Evans’ co-defendants: Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba. Evans claimed that Justice Hakeem Oshodi erred in law when he held that the amended information/charge dated October 19, 2017, filed by the first respondent, was incompetent without an accompanying or attached proof of evidence as required by law. But Justice Philomena Ekpe, who read the lead judgment, dismissed the appeal as being unmeritorious. lailasnews.com/evans-loses-in-court-appeal-court-dismisses-case/amp/ |

The Argentine Football Association has complained to South American football's governing body over the "serious and gross refereeing errors" in their Copa America semi-final defeat by Brazil. Tournament hosts Brazil made the final with a 2-0 win in Belo Horizonte. The official complaint to Conmebol follows Lionel Messi's claims of "crazy officiating". The Argentine FA also accuses Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro of making a "clear political demonstration". AFA president Claudio Tapia sent a six-page letter to Conmebol in support of the team and captain Messi, who was particularly aggrieved his side were not awarded a penalty by Ecuadorian referee Roddy Zambrano before Brazil's second goal. Speaking after the defeat, Barcelona forward Messi said: "The officiating was crazy. There were clear penalties, on [Nicolas] Otamendi, on Kun [Sergio Aguero]. "[The referee] was on their side. In every divided ball or dispute, he went their way." Tapia said Zambrano "unjustifiably omitted the use of VAR in at least two specific moves that clearly influenced the final result of the match". He also questioned whether "the principles of ethics, loyalty and transparency" had been observed during the match. South American news outlet GloboEsporte reported that Bolsonaro's security team had attempted to block signals, which caused interference and communication failure with the VAR system. However, the Brazilian local organising committee denied the presidential radio was the reason for the cut in communication with VAR, and said the problem was resolved before kick-off. Far-right politician Bolsonaro - who performed "an Olympic lap of honour around the stadium at half-time" - was voted in as president last October. Tapia pointed to Fifa and Conmebol rules that "prohibit political demonstrations at a sports event".

Tottenham have signed France midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Ligue 1 side Lyon for a club record 60m euros (£53.8m). The 22-year-old has signed a deal until 2025 and the fee could rise to 70m euros (£62.8m) with incentives. Tottenham's previous transfer record was the £42m paid to sign defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax in August 2017. Ndombele joined Lyon in 2017 and helped them finish third in the French top-flight last season. He also twice played against Manchester City in Champions League group games. In total Ndombele, who has six caps for France, made 96 appearances for Lyon and registered 16 assists. Lyon thanked the player for his time at the club, praising his "professionalism and his performances". Ndombele is Tottenham's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Jack Clarke from Leeds United. The winger, who was Spurs' first signing since Brazil forward Lucas Moura joined from Paris St-Germain in January 2018, was immediately loaned back to the Championship side for the 2019-20 season.

Manchester United have made a £70m bid for Leicester defender Harry Maguire. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign an experienced central defender and Maguire also has the leadership qualities he is looking for. It is understood that Leicester's board have been made aware of Maguire's wishes and that the 26-year-old would welcome the chance to step up to what he regards as a higher level. However, £70m would also be short of Leicester's valuation of the player. Harry Maguire on his rise to World Cup semi-finalist The England defender, who has also attracted interest from Premier League champions Manchester City, signed a five-year contract last September and manager Brendan Rodgers made it clear at the end of the season he feels Maguire can develop even more if he remains at the club. Maguire, who is currently on holiday, has been concerned at the prospect of Leicester pricing him out of a move away from the King Power Stadium. United have already signed youngsters Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Swansea and Crystal Palace respectively. The addition of Maguire would take their summer spending to almost £140m. United have had a long-standing interest in Maguire but they backed away from a deal 12 months ago because they felt the £70m that would be needed for a transfer to be concluded was too high. Leicester would be loathe to lose one of their key men ahead of a campaign that, with no European football to distract them, offers genuine hopes of marking Rodgers' first full season as manager with a top-six finish.

Arsenal have submitted an opening bid of about £40m for Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha. No players have been offered as part of the proposed deal, and the bid will be rejected by Palace. The 26-year-old is keen to leave the club this summer and favours a move to Arsenal, but the Eagles value the Ivory Coast international at up to £80m. The Gunners will have to hope a compromise can be reached on a lower fee and staggered payments. Arsenal's summer transfer budget has been restricted by their failure to qualify for next season's Champions League. After an unsuccessful move to Manchester United, Zaha made a permanent return to Palace in 2015 and has four years left on his contract, which he signed last summer. Since he helped Palace earn promotion back to the Premier League in 2012-13, they have finished in the top half just once, coming 10th in 2014-15, when Zaha had returned on a season-long loan from United. Zaha's brother, Judicael, told Sky Sports News: "Given all that Wilfried has given to Crystal Palace to help them remain a Premier League club, I hope Palace will be able to see their way to agreeing a deal with Arsenal that allows Wilfried to realise his dream of playing European football for the club he's supported since childhood."

While the controversy rages over its plan to settle herders, the presidency has reeled off reasons why this move has become inevitable. The defence of the scheme, also referred to as Ruga, came from Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu. He explained: “The Federal Government is planning this in order to curb open grazing of animals that continue to pose security threats to farmers as well as herders. The overall benefits to the nation include a drastic reduction in conflicts between herders and farmers, a boost in animal protection complete with a value chain that will increase the quality and hygiene of livestock in terms of beef and milk production, increased quality of feeding and access to animal care and private sector participation in commercial pasture production by way of investments. Other gains are job creation, access to credit facilities, security for pastoral families and curtailment of cattle rustling. Stripped of the politics and howling that has attended the recent comments, there is no government plan to seize state land, colonise territory or impose Ruga on any part of the federation. Government has made it clear time and again that the programme is voluntary.” Similarly, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) yesterday supported plan of the Federal Government. Nigerians cannot kick against open grazing and at the same time oppose ideas that would bring about ranches, the political and cultural association of leaders in the north stated. “What the government wishes to encourage is the settlements of nomads in a manner that they can have permanent and bigger settlements preparatory to embracing the concept of ranches, which are currently beyond the economic profile and professional expertise of individual nomads,” ACF Secretary General, Elder Anthony Sani, told The Guardian in an exclusive interview. He maintained there is nothing wrong with the timing of Ruga, which is a name for colonies of herdsmen or nomads, asking: “Why should any policy and programme designed to encourage sedentary settlements of nomads, leading to the practice of modern ranching, stoke suspicion?” He also insisted that it “is simply not possible” that the Federal Government is stoking a Fulanisation or Islamisation agenda. He said: “When people talk of Fulanisation by insurgents, it is laughable in the sense that Boko Haram comprises over 90 per cent of Kanuri ethnic extraction, which belongs to the El Kanemi Empire that was never part and parcel of the Sokoto Caliphate sired by the Fulani. “It is therefore unthinking of anybody to imagine that the Kanuri in Boko Haram would toil with their blood and sweat, day and night, with all the attendant risks inherent in insurgency in order to bring about Fulanisation for the Fulani.” Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had recently raised the alarm over the alleged agenda. But Sani insisted: “The fear spawned by Obasanjo is not justified because he actually said nothing new about the aims of Osama Bin Laden who founded Alqaeda which has multiplied into so many outfits. It is very important to remember what Osama Bin Laden said, to wit, that he was all out to Islamise the infidels of America and the West, and if possible, the whole world. “He went further to say that Alqaeda was the most decentralised organisation that has been very effective and efficient in the history of the world; and that if he died, he would leave thousands of Osama Bin Ladens behind to continue with the campaigns. Hence, the emergence of the Taliban in Afghanistan; Alshabab in Somalia; IS in Iraq and Syria; Boko Haram in Nigeria; and ISWAP in West Africa. “I am telling you that the fear of Fulanisation and Islamisation is not well founded. Let us be fair in our assessment. Much of the insecurity we talk about is in the form of guerrilla warfare, which is not conventional warfare. And so, the arrest of those who commit such heinous crimes is not easy and has to do with the capacity of our intelligence community, which is not well developed. “It is that weak intelligence community that has not made it possible for the arrest of the killers of Chief Bola Ige and the killers of many other high-profile politicians on the watch of President Obasanjo over 10 years after the events.” Sani further faulted calls for restructuring of the country. “We started with three regions, which became four regions with a weak centre. We have gone from 12 through 19, 21, 30 and now 36 states. We experimented with a parliamentary form of government through military dictatorship and now presidential system. We also tried confederate arrangement with a weak centre, then a unitary system with a strong centre. And now, we have a federal system with the national government that is balanced by appropriate state level power.” Nigeria has already undergone several restructurings, he said, warning that any fresh attempt will not solve the nation’s extremely complex problems. Unconvinced by Sani’s arguments however, the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) described the Ruga initiative as “repugnant, repulsive and provocative as it seeks to colonise the rest of Nigeria under the guise of promoting cattle rearing ,which is a private business that should not have the involvement of any responsible government.” According to the group, “Lining the might of the Federal Government behind the business of one ethnic group in a multi-ethnic country like Nigeria can only come from a government that is not interested in its unity.” In a statement by SMBLF spokesman, Yinka Odumakin (Afenifere), Dr. Isuwa Dogo (Middle Belt), Senator Bassey Henshaw (South South) and Prof. Chigozie Ogbu (South East), the Forum warned all governors of the region “not to succumb to any pressure to cede an inch of our land for this awful project as any governor who does so would be seen as an enemy of the people he governs.” It added: “Our people will defend their land against colonisation under the conquest policy the Federal Government is mindlessly pushing.” Similarly, the leader of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) and Aare Onakankanfo of Yoruba Land, Otunba Gani Adams, warned that history would not forgive any southwest governor who cedes any land for the settlement. His criticism was reechoed by the president of Yoruba Ronu, Akin Malaolu, who called on the Federal Government to back down on the idea. “The arrangement is totally against the constitution and it will not work,” he said. Meanwhile, at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the chairman of OnTiv group, Engr. Benjamin Nyior, expressed concern over the inclusion of Benue State in the scheme. “The families and property of our people have been threatened by Fulani herdsmen, who over the years have invaded, killed, displaced and attempted to take over our homes and farmlands,” he complained.

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar wants to move back to Barcelona, the Spanish club's vice-president has claimed. However, Jordi Cardoner insisted that no contact had been made with Neymar, who spent four years at the Nou Camp. The Brazil international, 27, has struggled to settle at PSG since his world record signing in 2017. "What [I believe] is that Neymar wants to come back," Cardoner said. "[But] to say we are working on recruiting him, that is something I cannot agree with." There has been speculation about where the Brazil forward could go next if he was to leave PSG, a topic Cardoner was asked about at a news conference on Thursday. He admitted it was "likely that Neymar wants to return to Barca," but added that his club had not looked into re-signing the player or held any discussions either with club or player. "We are recruiting no-one at the moment, especially not this player with whom we have had no contact," he said. Neymar's move to PSG in 2017 broke the global transfer record, with the Ligue 1 club paying 220m euros (£200m). He helped the side win consecutive Ligue 1 titles and scored 34 goals in 36 league appearances, but his time at Parc des Princes has been marred by rumours of dressing room confrontations and separate bans for hitting out at a fan and insulting match officials. According to reports in the Spanish media, he has offered to take a pay cut of 12m euros a year in order to facilitate a return to Barcelona. Antoine Griezmann is expected to join the Catalan club from Atletico Madrid for 120m euros while Frenkie de Jong has already signed for 75m euros from Ajax.

Beauty queen 'raped by Gambia's ex-President Jammeh' A 23-year-old former beauty queen in The Gambia, Fatou "Toufah" Jallow, has said she was raped by ex-President Yahya Jammeh when he was in office. Her testimony is part of a Human Rights Watch and Trial International report that details another alleged rape and sexual assault by Mr Jammeh. The BBC tried to contact Mr Jammeh, who now lives in exile in Equatorial Guinea, about the allegations. A spokesman for his APRC party denied the accusations made against Mr Jammeh. "We as a party and The Gambian people are tired of the steady stream of unfounded allegations that have been reported against our ex-president," said Ousman Rambo Jatta, in a written statement to the BBC. "The ex-president has no time to react to lies and smear campaigns. He is a very respectable God fearing and pious leader who has nothing but respect for our Gambian women," the deputy APRC leader said. Ms Jallow told the BBC she wanted to meet Mr Jammeh, 54, in court so he could face justice. "I decided to speak now because it is time to tell the story and to make sure that Yayha Jammeh hears what he has done" Fatou "Toufah" Jallow Former beauty queen I've really tried to hide the story and erase it and make sure it's not part of me. "Realistically I couldn't so I decided to speak now because it is time to tell the story and to make sure that Yayha Jammeh hears what he has done." She said she also wanted to testify before The Gambia's Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), which has been set up by President Adama Barrow, who won elections in December 2016. The TTRC is investigating human rights violations alleged to have been committed during Mr Jammeh's 22-year rule, including reports of extrajudicial killings, torture and arbitrary detention. He was forced from office in January 2017 after regional powers sent in troops when he refused to give up power. 'MARRIAGE REFUSAL' Ms Jallow said she was 18 when she met Mr Jammeh after winning a beauty pageant in 2014 in the capital, Banjul. In the months following her coronation, she said the former president acted as a father figure when they met, offering her advice, gifts and money, and also organising for running water to be installed in her family home. Then at a dinner organised by an aide to the president, she says he asked her to marry him. She refused and rebuffed other enticements from the aide to agree to the offer. YAHYA JAMMEH: AT A GLANCE Seized power in a coup in 1994 aged 29 In 2013, he vowed to stay in power for "a billion years" if God wills He also ordered the execution of criminals and political opponents on death row Claimed in 2007 he could cure Aids and infertility with herbal concoctions Warned in 2008 that gay people would be beheaded Denied his security agents killed journalist Deyda Hydara in 2004 Forced from power in January 2017 by regional powers after losing elections in 2016 Living in exile in Equatorial Guinea Ms Jallow said the aide then insisted she attend a religious ceremony at State House in her role as beauty queen in June 2015. But when she arrived, she was taken to the president's private residence. "It was clear what this was going to be," she said, describing Mr Jammeh's anger at her for rejecting him. Ms Jallow says he slapped her and injected her in her arm with a needle. "He rubbed his genitals in my face, pushed me down to my knees, pulled my dress up and sodomised me." 'PROTOCOL GIRLS' The young woman says afterwards she locked herself at home for three days and then decided to flee to neighbouring Senegal. Once in Dakar, the Senegalese capital, Ms Jallow sought the assistance of various human rights organisations. Weeks later, she was approved protection status and moved to Canada, where she has been living since. Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Trial International say Mr Jammeh had a system in place to abuse women, where some were put on the state payroll and worked at State House as so-called "protocol girls", who had some clerical duties but were mainly on call to have sex with the president. The BBC could not verify the allegation, but a former Gambian official, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity, said he was aware of "inappropriate things" happening at the presidency: "Protocol staff were mostly women and they were hired to satisfy the president's fantasies." He remembered seeing Ms Jallow at State House, sometimes at "odd hours". Another woman, hired as a protocol officer at the age of 23, told HRW she was forced to have sex with Mr Jammeh in 2015. The woman, who asked not to be named, said that one day the president called her into his room: "He started undressing me and saying that he was in love with me, that he will do anything for me and my family, that I should not tell anyone because if I do I will face the consequences. "I felt I had no choice. That day he slept with me without protection."
