Milk production starts with water, not feed. Many pig farmers focus on feed quality when milk drops—but forget the most critical ingredient: clean, abundant water. A sow can survive days with poor feed, but milk production collapses within hours when water is limited. Let me tell you a story, My pig farrowed and she was lactating very well and then my attendant decided to go out to see a site and before leaving he didn’t make sure there was water in the tank , he left, there was no water for the pigs to drink but the most affected one was the lactating sow, she stopped producing milk, it was then a big problem trying to survive the piglets. So please don’t joke with water when it comes to lactating pigs, let there be 24hrs supply of fresh and clean water 💦. 1. Milk Is Mostly Water Sow milk is over 80% water. If water intake drops: • Milk volume drops immediately • Piglets become hungry and restless • Growth rate slows from the first week No ration, supplement, or additive can replace missing water. 2. Lactating Sows Have Extreme Water Needs A dry sow may drink 10–15 litres/day. A lactating sow may need 25–40+ litres/day, depending on: • Litter size • Temperature • Feed intake Large litters demand more milk—and more water. If water supply is limited, the sow will protect her body first, not milk. 3. Poor Water Access = Poor Feed Intake Sows eat more feed when water is available. When water is restricted: • Feed intake drops • Body condition loss increases • Milk yield falls further Feed and water work together—but water comes first. 4. Water Quality Matters Dirty, salty, or foul-smelling water: • Reduces drinking • Causes scours • Increases disease pressure Pig farmers often blame feed or disease, when the real problem is poor water quality. Clean water must be: • Fresh • Cool • Free of manure, algae, and rust 5. Equipment Failures Kill Milk Production Common hidden problems: • Blocked nipples • Low water pressure • Leaking drinkers that discourage use • Nipples placed too high or too low A sow cannot complain—she simply produces less milk. PIG FARMING IN NIGERIA Pigs are kept in almost all the farms in Nigeria. It is still common to find pigs roaming freely around communities in rural areas of southern Nigeria than in the Northern parts due to religious taboo associated with pig farming. However, pig farming enterprises are also found in and around towns and cities in many areas of Nigeria, and stands a good lucrative source of income when properly managed like every other farming business. Good pig farming in Nigeria relies on a combination of inter connected aspects such as housing, breeding and reproduction, nutrition, disease prevention & control and management; which are incorporated into intensive system of pig keeping to achieved a desirable and sustainable production. However, a blend of technical know how to make the right decisions at the right time, capital to provide improved building, feed and drugs, marketing viability to ensure that the animals have to be brought to the market when they have reached the desired weight and with optimum strategy for buying and selling of inputs (drugs, feed, farm facilities & equipment) and output (pork) with dependable sales outlet are key to sustainable income flow from pig farming. PROFITABILITY OF PIG FARMING IN NIGERIA A simple way to judge whether pig farming is profitable is by comparing the pork price (pig meat) and cost of production. Assumptions (NB; Based on the available contemporary experience on pig farming) • Average daily weight gain of 0.4kg • Average daily feed consumption of 1.64kg from weaner to finisher of (50kg live weight in this case) • Target live weight of 50kg • Resultant pork from pig as 80% of its market weight • Average feed price per kg of diet= #150 • Selling price per kg of pork= #2400 • Other costs(drugs and vaccine) = #1000 Hence, • The pig would require 50÷0.4= 125 days to reach the target market weight of 50kg • Total feed consumed throughout growth (125×1.64) = 205kg • Total cost of feed consumed (205×150)= #30,750 Therefore Total cost of production = total cost of feed + other cost = 30,750 + 19,500 = #50,250 • Resultant pork = 80% of 50kg = 35kg • Cost price per kg of pork = 32,250÷ 35 = #806.25 • Selling price of pork per kg = #1,100 • Profit per kg of pork = selling price of pork per kg – cost price per kg of pork = 1100 – 806.25 = #293.75 Therefore, you make #293.75 for every kg of pork meat!! HOW CAN MORE PROFIT BE MADE? While the above illustrations were ensured to be real as obtainable in pig farming. WHY YOUR PIGS EAT A LOT WITHOUT GETTING SATISFIED. When feed is served to your pigs, there are a couple of factors that determine how much of the feed the pigs will eat. One of those factors is the palatability of the feed. The Palatability of the feed is actually how nice the feed taste to the pig. That is not what we will be discussing in this article. We will be looking at WHAT ACTUALLY DETERMINES THE QUANTITY OF FEED YOUR PIGS EAT Let me try to explain the concept of ENERGY. Energy is the ability to do work. So for the pigs to jump around, urinate, poo, digest their food and carry out metabolism, they need energy and that energy comes from the food they consume. Let me also explain the concept of HUNGER. Hunger is a sensation controlled by the brain alerting the body that the energy which it is using to function is depleting. This can be likened to a fuel gauge in a car. If the fuel in your vehicle depletes, the fuel gauge gives you signal by illuminating the low fuel signal on your dashboard informing you that the energy supplier, which is the fuel, is reducing. Food, supplies energy to pigs and there is an optimal energy level that your pig tries to attain anytime it is eating. As soon as that energy level is attained, the brain will trigger a feeling of satisfaction and the pig will stop eating and be satisfied. So, if the feed served to your pig contains high energy materials that are easily digestible, it will be easy for them to attain the desired energy level and they will stop eating fast and then go and rest. Most of the time, the pigs will go and lie down and sleep off. On the other hand, if the energy content of the feed is low and not digestible, the pigs will keep eating and eating. In doing so, they are trying to reach their desired energy level that will trigger the feeling of satisfaction. Let me try to buttress this point further. If you serve your pigs vegetables for example, no matter the quantity, those pigs will be ready to eat from morning till night. This is because with vegetables, it is difficult to attain the needed energy level that will trigger the feeling of satisfaction because the energy content of vegetables is low. But assuming you feed the pigs meal that is rich in energy like potatoes, potatoes contain high energy, the potatoes will help the pigs quickly attain their desired energy and before long, the pig’s brain will trigger the feeling of satisfaction and they will stop eating. Even you as a human being, a plate of fufu and soup and a bowl of pineaples and grapes, which one will satisfy you faster? Answer in the comments. So, every time your pig continues to eat without getting satisfied, check the energy content of the feed, it may be low. So, as a rule in feed formulation, the higher the energy content of the feed, the lower the amount of feed the pigs will consume. Materials that are high in energy are Carbohydrates, fats and Oil. One way to buy the piglets, also known as pig feeders, is to approach the producers and the stock breeders. They’d advise you on which to get from them and especially what your budget can afford. Usually, pigs that were cross-bred are vibrant, have a high appetite, and grow faster. This makes a mixed breed a top choice for most new farmers. When trying to purchase a piglet or feeder, it’s advisable you talk to a veterinary doctor to verify their health status. A healthy piglet for a new farm should usually be large and weigh a minimum of 25 lbs. The sex also determines the growth rate, as male piglets are know to grow faster than the female piglets. 4). Pig Feed: Pig feed Pigs can feed on almost anything, but the best meals for domesticated pigs raised primarily for commercial purposes are usually grains and meat. While corn is one of their most coveted meals, they can be fed with cooked vegetables, and left over meals in the house. WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN STARTING UP A COMMERCIAL PIG FARMING MITWEL – 30/01/2025 After laying a good foundation in the previous articles, we will now start tackling particular areas in the big block of commercial pig farming. These include but not limited to Farm planning, feeds and Feeding, Breeds and breeding, Farm hygiene & health, pig housing, record keeping etc. Also, I have reduced the length of my weekly missives as requested by some people. We will of course start with farm planning. In this and the coming publications, I will be discussing the initial cost requirement for staring up different businesses in commercial pig production. If you still remember, Commercial pig farming has about three well developed revenue channels i.e. live pigs (For breeding), Pork and semen. Another product is manure. However this still requires us to invest a lot in thinking in order to ascertain how best to process and package it. The way it is sold currently doesn’t enable full exploitation of its potential. The only producers benefiting from pig farm manure maximumly are those integrating piggery with crop production. The revenue channels bring us to the three specialized businesses in commercial pig farming which include; Breeding, Fattening and Boa stud. I have already explained these in detail in my book Farming Pigs For Money but also in previous weekly publications. Let me briefly explain the three basing on what I am going to be talking about today and in the future. a. Breeding. This is the engine of commercial pig farming. Breeders are the drivers of pork business profitability, productivity, taste management and continuity. These own grandparent stock of different breeds which they manipulate through crossbreeding and selection to produce highly productive gilts and boars. Under breeding, we also have producers whose docket is to produce fattening stock for those who are doing only fattening to buy. These are clients to the category talked about above. Do more reading from my book “Farming Pigs for Money”, the topic on Commercial Pig Farming. b. Fattening. These are divided into two categories as well. The first category owns parent stock of classic first generation gilts and therefore produce own fattening stock. The second category just buy fattening stock from category a of above. c. Boar stud. Here the farmer owns boars of different commercial breeds and use them to collect, process and distribute boar semen to pig producers. I want to help you assess what it takes to set up any of the above businesses. Let’s start with breeding. This can be approached in two ways: 1. Importing grandparent stock 2. Grading up locally available stock Importing grandparent stock Here you both need enough money and striking a deal with a breeding company. Africa has but a few breeders and many are trying to protect their monopoly already created so it will be difficult to find a supplier from here. The best and cheaper option is the western world where pig breeding businesses are many. These people are trying to find new markets/areas to colonize so you may base on that to negotiate for a better offer. NB. There is no breeder who can easily sale to you full rights over their breeds. There is a lot of resources invested in research and development to come up with something that works. They will need to control your operations and the sale of the animals and you will basically operate as a franchise. Therefore you will pay loyalty every year to the breeder. The good example is ALZU genetics in South Africa which owns a franchise for Pig Improvement Company (PIC) in South Africa. These owns the Cambrough brand. Remember, such franchise can only work when you meet the requirements of your preferred breeder otherwise striking a deal will be very difficult.
