Do you know any Pig Farmer in Ibadan that you can link me up with

Jaywon240:
Major Reasons Why your sow is not conceiving or Has Small Litter Size
️The profitability of pig farming is determined to a large extent by the reproductive performance of the sow which is governed by two factors; litter size and number of litters each sow produces each year.
️A sow reproductive success is judged by her litter size( number of piglets/ farrowing), Number of services before Conception (conception rate)and Mothering abilities ( temperament, weaning weight & weaning rate)
️Conception rate is the most critical parameter in reproductive performance and is reduced when:
The sow is too fat.
It is the animal’s first heat cycle especially if bred early
Poor detection of heat and mating management.
The boar used for service is too young.
The boar used for service is overworked (used for more than five matings a week).

Note that:
Gestation length =114 days.

Lactation length = 28 days.

Weaning to oestrus = 8days.

Total = 150 days.

Potential = 2.4 litters/sow/year.

Average piglets born alive per litter 14.

⭕Therefore, Target number of piglets / sow / years = 28.

Life Cycle of a Market Pig

The life cycle of a market pig is very fast paced and always changing rapidly. On average, it takes around six months for a pig to reach market weight of 120kgs to 130kgs.

It all begins at the farrowing stage. Farrowing is the term used to describe a female pig giving birth to a piglet which typically weighs 800g to 1.4kg.

Gestation (pregnancy)
114 days — (3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days)
• Gilts (female pigs) reach maturity and are bred at 170 to 220 days of age.
• After delivering their first litter of pigs, gilts are called sows.
• Gestation (pregnancy) is about 114 days, or 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days.
* Sows nurse piglets until they are weaned between 21 to 28days

Farrowing (birth to weaning)
21 days — (3 weeks)
• Sows and gilts are moved to a farrowing barn when ready to give birth (farrow).
• Usually, a sow or gilt will have 10 to 14 piglets per litter.
•Creep feed may be introduced in small portions to help piglets adapt to solids post weaning.
• Piglets weigh 5 to 7 kgs at weaning.

Nursery
42 to 56 days — (6 to 8 weeks)
• After weaning, piglets are moved to a nursery or to a wean-to finish barn and are housed with piglets from other litters.
• Piglets are fed a corn/soybean meal diet, eating 0.6 to 1.8kg per day.
•Farmers should walk through the nursery pens routinely to make sure the pigs are eating regularly and adjusting well.
• In this phase, pigs grow to 22 to 28kgs.

Growing and Finishing
115 to 120 days — (16 to 17 weeks)
• Pigs are moved from the nursery to a finishing barn to accommodate their continued growth. If pigs are in a wean-to-finish barn, they remain there.
• In the grow/finish phase, pigs consume 3 to 4kgs of feed daily.
• A diet typically consists of corn and soybean meal, as well as vitamins and minerals to ensure proper health and growth of the pigs.
• Pigs are single-stomach animals and require two or three meals a day. Divide the food into two portions, feed the pigs half in the morning and the rest in the evening. Do not feed your pigs only once a day because once they had their fill they will only play with the rest of the food, stand in it and soil it.
• At about six months of age, the pigs weigh about 120 to 130kgs. and are then market ready.

COMMON MISTAKES IN PIGGERY FARMING.

Hello my dear farmers, piggery farming is a fast growing venture. However, below are costly common mistakes that we tend to make.

1. Breeding stock.
We are well aware that breeding stock (Parent stock) is never cheap, however we farmers still are still stuck to cheap poor quality pigs that do not grow however much you feed them with too good feeds
Good feeds on poor quality breeds equates to loses.
Poor quality feeds on good genetics equates to loses as well

2. Numbers over Profitability.
Most of us are still excited because we have many pigs forgetting to focus on farm profitability. Well managed 5 sows with 1 boar are much profitable than poorly managed 20 sows with 2 boars.

3. Feeds Vs Weight gain Vs Time.
Some of us are not giving pigs the recommended feeds to achieve a given weight at a specified period of time. For example we achieve 87-100kgs by 20-24 weeks by feeding them almost 2.5kgs of nutritious feed mixture per day,

Some farmers give their pigs 1 kg of feeds for 10 months to achieve 80kgs while others give 2.5kgs for 5 months to achieve 100kgs.
Feeding Ad lib helps farmers reach market weight as early as 16 weeks.

4. Allowing Visitors Fwaaaaa
We have turned down lots of money because individuals wanted to visit the farm.
Visiting the farm isn't bad, however your visitors will surely bring pathogens and swine fever to wipe you out.
Decide do you want to do Agritourism or agribusiness.

5. Shelter
Pigs must be kept is a place cleaned twice a day at least. Leaving animals in dirty and wet environment allows growth of unwanted diseases and pathogens. Explains why piglets are stunted and are ever shivering.
Poor housing is equivalent to Negative profits.

6. Clean water.
Purchase automated nipple drinker jerrican if you cannot pipe the whole farm to provide 24/7 clean water (70-80% of a pig contains fluids)

7. Be Humble to learn
In every venture for that matter one needs to humble themselves and learn from those that know what to do. You may have the money when entering piggery farming but you'll surely come out with nothing if you do not invest in knowledge or someone who knows the venture.

8. Understanding Animal Nutrition.
Feeding pigs is a technique not a principle. For example;
Piglets require more protein, while breeders require moderate protein in their meal. 70% of the meal must contain some carbohydrates. Lactating (breast feeding) sows require enough: water, protein and carbohydrates among others.

When pigs eat less, reduce feeds served to them to avoid wastage and create hunger to increase feeds intake.

When more feeds are consumed, provide the recommended quantities and unlimited clean water 24/7.

9. Lack of Wean to finish plan.
A majority of my farmer friends want to sell piglets. They do not have the plan to produce fatteners for pork. This simply means that failure to get market for their piglets leads to malnutrition due to lack of a proper and enough nutritious feeds for the animals.
In this case you risk closure of total having stunted pigs that do not grow.

10 Quality.
To produce quality animals, you must invest in quality breeds, nutritious feeds first and foremost. Maintain the number you can afford to give your best. Its better to have 10 well fed pigs than to have 100 malnourished pigs with 0 body score with no profit.

On marketing, quality breeds that have been well fed will always market themselves, everyone loves quality pigs

PIG FEED REQUIREMENTS AT EACH STAGE OF GROWTH

Piglets

Young pigs do not take much in terms of solid feed because they get all their nutritional needs from their mothers' milk. To ensure piglets get enough milk from suckling during the early stages of growth, farmers should give the sows adequate and balanced feed to ensure they produce adequate milk for the piglets. At three weeks after farrowing (birth), the farmer should castrate all male piglets and start to train them to eat solid feeds. Suckling piglets should also have their sharp teeth clipped, three days after farrowing to prevent them causing injury to their mother during suckling.

Assuming a farmer has 10 piglets to feed, they can isolate a creep area (housing for young ones) where their mother cannot reach and put in 50g of feed per piglet per day. Observe the feeding daily; if you see the feed reducing, add another 50g for each into their feeding trough to make it 1kg. At 5 weeks (35 to 42 days) add another 50g per piglet to make it 150g. The piglets should always have access to their mother in case they want to suckle. They should also have access to clean water at all times.

Weaners

At 6 weeks, each piglet should be getting 200g of feed per week. If they finish the feed, keep on adding an extra 50g per piglet daily. During the feeding process, the farmer should weigh the pigs weekly (a healthy pig at this stage should add at least 900g per day). If there is an increase in weight at this rate, it means that the pigs are growing well. Weaners should be given dry feed at all times to prevent scouring or diarrhoea. Give adequate clean water at all times.

Porkers

At 14 weeks, the pigs will require additional feed; the farmer can give 1.4kg of extra feed per pig per day. In addition, the farmer should continue giving the 50g of feed as they were doing before. Divide the pig feed into three equal portions:

A wet ration in the morning at 7 am (feed mixed with water), a dry feed at noon (feed with no water) and a final wet feed (feed mixed with water) at 4 pm. A well-fed porker pig should add an extra 300g of weight per day (weigh them regularly and record their weight to monitor their growth).

Baconers

At 22 weeks, the pigs (now called baconers) require a higher feed ration as they are about to attain the market liveweight of between 80-90kg. At this stage the farmer should give them 2.5 – 2.75kg of feed per pig per day. From 23 weeks, the feed should be increased to 3kg (1kg of wet feed in the morning, 1kg of dry feed at noon and 1kg of wet feed at 4pm). If well managed at this stage pigs can attain up to 100kg in 5 months.

At this stage the farmers can now do selection of the pigs to determine those that can go to the abbattoir for slaughter, young female pigs (gilts) can be served and sold to interested farmers while others can be retained for breeding as sows. The boars (male pigs) can also be sold or retained for breeding purposes (be careful to ensure the pig does not serve its daughters or related pigs to avoid inbreeding). A well-managed baconer should add an extra 900g to 1000g (1 kg) per day.

Sows

Sows need special attention in feeding. A sow’s yield can be as high as 16-17 litres of milk per day. To produce this amount of milk, a sow has to be well fed, both for body maintenance and milk production. A sow with piglets that are suckling requires 6 kilogrammes of feed every day or an amount of feed that is equal to 25 % of her body weight.

The feeding should be divided into 3 rations (2kg of wet feed in the morning, 2kg of dry feed at noon and 2kg of wet feed at 4pm). Like other pigs, sows should be given adequate and clean water at all times.

Gilts

A female pig that is not yet served (gilts) should be given at least 3kg of feed per day. The farmer can supplement this with any other available feed in addition to this ration to keep them in good shape in terms of health and reproduction.

Boars

Male pigs (boars) should not be given a lot of feed. If given more feed, they tend to put more weight and this compromises their fertility. A boar should be given 3 to 4 kg of feed per day. Some farmers give less or even starve them in order to reduce fattening. Give them clean water at all times.

ANSWERS TO SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PIGGERY FARMING:

1. WHAT CAUSES STUNTED GROWTH IN PIGS?

* Poor breeds will not grow very fast no matter how you tried.

* Parasites. External parasites, such as mange, lice, ticks and fleas, may resulting in poor growth. Internal parasites, such as worms, will also cause poor growth.

2. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A PIG TO GROW TO FULL SIZE?

It should not take a very good breeds more than FIVE & a HALF months from a birth day to grow up to 80-100+ KG with good feeding and other logistics in proper perspectives.

3. WHAT DO YOU FEED PIGS TO GROW FAST?

Formulating a good pig feed will help achieve optimum growth of your stock. Feeds should meet the animal's needs for maintenance, growth, and reproduction, and contain sufficient energy, protein, minerals and vitamins.

4. WHAT MUST I AVOID AT ALL COST IN PIGGERY BUSINESS?

No matter how desperate you are to start pig farming, make sure you avoid poor BREEDS, with poor BREEDS, the PIGGERY BUSINESS WILL BE LIKE SPIRITUAL PROBLEM in your view.

UNDERSTAND THE BASIC NEEDS FOR PIGGERY BUSINESS.
reliable water supply and sufficient capital to start the operation and keep it going until marketing the first batch of pigs. Some farmers invest in livestock but forget that it takes time and money to grow them to marketable size.

This consider basics needed for a small pig farming operation: design, infrastructure, construction cost, and running costs, including feed, early in the operation.

Understanding the role of the boar in breeding

The basic infrastructure depends on how many pigs you want to keep. The design should ideally allow for adding further pens as your operation grows.

Previously, I suggested starting off by buying weaners (young pigs already on solid food, usually older than 28 days) and growing them out.

In this way, you’ll soon learn about pig behaviour, management techniques and daily feed requirements.

Your cash turnover cycle will also be quicker, as you will not need to feed a sow for four months while it is pregnant, manage the birth process, and then feed the piglets until selling them.

READ Intensive or free-range pig farming?

It is crucial to consider the economics. Is it worth your while to feed the sow for so many months, or should you let another farmer do this for you, leaving you only the task of growing the weaners out to ‘porker’ or ‘baconer’ size?

If you start with six weaners (a practical number), one holding enclosure is fine but two are better in case you need to separate weaker feeders from greedy or aggressive ones, a common problem in pig farming.

Pig shelters can be built in several ways, with some designs being more solid than others. You can also use the structure of an existing outbuilding, adding internal compartments as needed.

Brick and mortar construction is strong but expensive, and the layout cannot easily be changed at a later stage.

I suggest using medium-heavy steel gates to form enclosures around the sleeping areas as this is cheaper than building walls. You can have some made-to-purpose, or use sheep gates bought at a co-op. Using wire or heavy duty cable ties, link the gates to one another to create a firm structure. You can at any time change the arrangement/size of the enclosures.

READ Waste management: How Spier Estate turns trash into cash

Avoid using net or other types of fencing. A pig is a strong animal and may start biting or forcing its nose through such a fence, eventually creating an escape route.

You may have to cover a gate with some form of netting when housing young weaners, which can escape through the bars.

Guidelines for enclosed sleeping structures

Each pig requires about 4m² of pen space (including the sleeping area, about one-third of the pen).
The total pen area for six pigs should be about 24m² (4m x 6m).
Remember this when making or buying steel gates. Ideally, these should be 2m long, with no gaps wider than 15cm between the bars.
Concrete or paved surfaces are easier to clean. Otherwise site the pens on slightly sloping ground for water run-off when it rains. A permanently muddy surface with puddles of water promotes disease.

The enclosure needs a feeding trough long enough to provide each feeding pig standing space. The trough can be built from brick and mortar (about 60cm wide and 30cm above ground level) along one of the boundaries.

A long concrete sheep drinking trough is also a good pig feeding trough. It is portable and easy to clean.

Hello Pig Farmers and Pigpreneurs,
In the realm of pig farming, success often comes hand in hand with challenges and obstacles. Let's dive in and equip ourselves with the knowledge and insights needed to navigate the pitfalls of pig farming and emerge victorious! 🌟🐖

**1. Lack of Strategic Planning:
📉 The Downfall: Many pig farming ventures falter due to a lack of strategic planning, leading to poor decision-making and inefficient resource allocation.
📝 The Solution: Invest time and effort in crafting a comprehensive business plan that outlines clear goals, strategies, and contingency plans to steer your venture towards success.

**2. Inadequate Financial Management:
💸 Financial Strain: Financial mismanagement, including overspending, poor budgeting, and inadequate cash flow management, can spell doom for pig farming ventures.
💰 Financial Fitness: Prioritize financial literacy and implement sound financial management practices to ensure the financial health and sustainability of your pig farming operation.

**3. Poor Herd Health Management:
⚕️ Health Hazards: Neglecting herd health management can lead to disease outbreaks, high mortality rates, and significant economic losses in pig farming ventures.
🏥 Health Protocols: Implement robust biosecurity measures, vaccination programs, and disease surveillance systems to safeguard the health and well-being of your pig herd and mitigate health risks.

**4. Suboptimal Breeding Practices:
🐖 Genetic Gambles: Choosing inferior genetics or neglecting proper breeding practices can result in poor herd performance and reduced profitability in pig farming ventures.
📈 Breeding Excellence: Invest in superior genetics, implement strategic breeding programs, and prioritize genetic selection to enhance the quality and productivity of your pig herd.

**5. Inefficient Feed Management:

Why you should venture into piggery....

Piggery, also known as pig farming, is indeed a lucrative venture in animal husbandry in Nigeria. Here are some reasons why piggery is considered a gold mine:

1. High demand: Poultry and livestock products, including pork, are widely consumed in Nigeria. The country has a large population, and pork is especially popular in certain regions and among various ethnic groups. This high demand for pork ensures a constant market for pig farmers.

2. Quick turnaround: Pigs have a relatively short gestation period of around 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. This means that farmers can quickly breed pigs and achieve a high turnover rate. Additionally, pigs reach market weight within a relatively short period compared to other livestock, usually between 6 and 9 months.

3. High profitability: Pig farming has a high potential for profitability. Pigs can be raised intensively, for example, in well-managed pigsties or using modern housing systems. This allows farmers to maximize space and increase productivity. By implementing proper feeding, breeding, and health management practices, pig farmers can achieve high growth rates and maximize profits.

4. Multiple income streams: Pig farming offers various income streams for farmers. Apart from selling live pigs to the market, there is a demand for pork meat, pork sausages, bacon, and other pig-related products. By diversifying their offerings, pig farmers can exploit different markets and increase their revenue.

5. Efficient feed conversion: Pigs are considered one of the most efficient animals in terms of feed conversion. They can convert a wide variety of feed sources, including agricultural by-products, food waste, and formulated diets, into valuable meat products. This ability to utilize different feed sources reduces operational costs and increases profitability.

6. Job creation: Pig farming can contribute significantly to job creation and poverty alleviation. As a labor-intensive industry, pig farming provides employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers. This can help reduce unemployment rates and improve the socio-economic conditions of individuals and communities.

However, it's important to note that successful pig farming requires proper management, knowledge of best practices, and adherence to biosecurity measures. Farmers should also consider factors such as disease control, market dynamics, and environmental sustainability to ensure long-term success in the piggery business.
