Car TalkRe: Why The Obsession With 20W50 Engine Oil? by Jeff777:
There are several types of motor engine oils (Mineral oils & Synthetic oils) in the market. Most of these engine oils do not have good anti-wear, extreme pressure additives and also lack additive for good thermal stability; that protects oil thickness (viscosity) from being reduced as the temperature of the engine increases, which causes engine wear. However, the best engine oil in the market now is Royal Purple Synthetic Motor Oils. The available oil grades are 5W20 HPS, 5W30 HPS, 5W30 HMX, 10W30 HMX and 10W40 HPS. Also, Royal Purple do produce 20W50 HPS. Due to the high quality of this product, the oil change interval is 12,000 miles (20,000 km). The HPS grades are good for low and high mileage vehicles (both diesel and petrol engines except 5W20 which for only petrol engines) The HMX grades are specifically produced for only petrol engines with high mileage above 75,000 miles (120,000 km) above. However, as your car is getting older, you may need to change the oil grade to higher grade.

does your oil go down on the dipstick? If the answer is yes, don't go near 5w20, that will spell doom for the engine.
