Andy Ruiz Jr might have produced one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight history on Saturday, but his pay cheque was distinctly lightweight, compared to Anthony Joshua’s.

The Mexican stunned Britain’s WBA, IBF and WBO champion to shake up heavyweight boxing’s established order in dramatic style.

Ruiz is understood to have made only around £5m from the fight at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden, The SUN has reported.

Compare that to the whopping £20m Joshua is thought to have made and you see just how wide the gulf in class between these two boxers was supposed to be.

Despite taking home Joshua’s three belts, Ruiz was not even meant to be on the money list on Saturday night.

He took the fight with just five weeks’ notice after Joshua’s original opponent Jarrell Miller failed three drugs tests in the build-up.

The cash is the largest purse of Ruiz’s career, but he can expect to earn a lot more than that in any rematch later this year.

His previous biggest payday came in at a reported £770,000 for his defeat by New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in 2017.

Former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has encouraged the immediate past governors of Ogun and Imo states, Ibikunle Amosun and Rochas Okorocha, respectively, to surrender themselves to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Fayose did not state why he singled out the two ex-governors for the advice.

Fayose gave this advice in the wake of the rumours about the alleged arrest of Okorocha and his wife, Nkechi, by the anti-graft agency.

Taking to his verified Twitter handle @GovAyoFayose, Fayose noted that regardless of whether the Okorochas’ arrest was true or not, he knew that the day would come when EFCC would be going after the former governors.

He went on to welcome Okorocha to what he termed the “EFCC Alumni Club” and enjoined the government agency not to “look away from Amosun.”






His words, “Just reading that Okorocha was arrested by EFCC. True or not, we knew this day will come. However, I welcome him to the EFCC Alumni & enjoin the commission not to look away from Amosun too. While I encourage them to surrender themselves as I did, I welcome Mr Okorocha to the club.”

Chicago prosecutors on Thursday filed 11 felony sex crime charges against R&B superstar R. Kelly, in what his lawyer said was a refiling of counts from an existing case.

Kelly is already facing 10 felony charges, filed in February, for the alleged abuse of four women.


The latest counts are refiled charges from an allegation from 10 years ago, and not a new case, Kelly’s lawyer Steve Greenberg said.

“These are the same conduct, just charged differently, same alleged victim, same time frame, same facts,” Greenberg said on Twitter.

“It changes nothing,” Greenberg said.

Kelly is currently out on bail. He will appear in court June 6 on the new charges, US media reported.


The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, which is prosecuting the case, did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has thanked Nigerians for turning out to vote for him in their millions and confirmed that the initial indications from the PDPs Simultaneous Vote Count show a PDP victory is assured.

Atiku in a statement issued in Abuja by his Special Assistant On Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, said “I would like to sincerely thank the millions of people who, despite having to bear the additional burden of a postponed election, came out yesterday to vote for me and the other PDP candidates standing in this election.”


He said with the PDP’s high tech, cloud-based SVC system – which is able to collate in real-time the results from the 176,000 voting points across the nation – the Presidential candidate could boldly assure his supporters that victory was at hand.

“With strong shares of the vote in South-South, South-East as well as an increased share in South-West and North-Central, are very pleased with the progress the PDP has made. When bread hawker, Olajumoke Orisaguna, walked past the location where photographer, TY Bello, was having a photo session with London-based rapper, Tinie Tempah, in 2016, little did she know that it would alter the course of her life. Her fortunes quickly changed for the better and her story enthralled millions of Nigerians, who were amazed by her good luck. Many further warmed up to her because she usually appeared with her spouse, Sunday, for interviews and she always spoke of him glowingly.

However, it seems there is trouble in their paradise. Sunday Orisaguna recently granted an interview in which he alleged that Jumoke had become rude and no longer respected him.

However, in a chat with Sunday Scoop, Olajumoke denied all the allegations made by her man. She said, “Anybody can say whatever pleases them with their mouth. He is the one that has been spreading such stories. When a man knows everything about you, he can choose to do whatever with that information. As for me, I am okay and there is nothing wrong with me.”

Denying that there was any rift in their union, Olajumoke said, “Whatever is going on is known to God. We are still together. He has never discussed all what he has been saying outside with me, so I don’t understand what he is driving at because we sleep in the same house.

“Well, he can continue saying whatever pleases him but I will not say anything bad about him. There is nobody I will discuss his matter with; I just leave him to God. God will judge between us.”

Asked if Sunday was displeased because she no longer gave him money, Olajumoke said, “Now you understand what I have been saying. I do not need to break it down beyond that; you already know what I mean. I will not say anything bad about him. I have handed him to God.”

Refusing to categorically reveal her future plans as regards building a house, the former bread seller said, “There is nobody that would pray to live in a rented apartment for five years, and at the end of that time, not have something tangible to call his or her own. However, it is not everything one plans to do that is made public. One has to keep certain things within one as an elder. We all know where the shoe pinches.”

Reacting to the claims that things started going downhill for her after she left her former manager, Azuka Ogujuiba, Olajumoke said, “Azuka was one of the people that assisted me at the inception of my career. She is usually busy and that is why I decided to change my manager. I still communicate regularly with Azuka and we have even spoken today (Thursday). She and TY Bello are like sisters to me.”

Olajumoke said she hadn’t become a spendthrift since she came to the limelight. “I have always been a good manager. Even when I was working in the bakery, I knew how to manage the resources available to me. Can you imagine a man not working for two years and being fed by a woman?”

Ninety-eight workers have died and at least 200 others have been hospitalised in northeastern India after drinking toxic liquor, officials said on Saturday, in the latest case of alcohol poisoning in the country.

The deaths in Assam state came less than two weeks after tainted liquor killed about 100 people in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

In addition to the latest toll, at least 200 more people were still hospitalised, according to a statement by the Assam government.

Golaghat district deputy commissioner Dhiren Hazarika said people started falling sick after consuming a batch of illegally produced liquor late Thursday.

The victims, who include many women, worked at local tea estates in the region. The death toll could rise further as both officials said some of the afflicted were in a critical condition.

“The people came to the hospital with severe vomiting, extreme chest pain and breathlessness,” doctor Ratul Bordoloi, joint director of Golaghat’s health department, told AFP.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered an inquiry into the deaths.

State police said they had arrested one man for selling the liquor, and authorities said two excise department officials were suspended for failing to take adequate precautions over the sale of the alcohol.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told AFP that state authorities had collated “at least 80” deaths in the districts. “But apart from this some more people died outside the hospital,” he added.

“I also met the family members and relatives and ensured them that the perpetrators will not be spared,” Sarma said in a Twitter comment.

Some media reports, citing anonymous sources, said that more than 100 people had died and the exact number was still being verified by authorities.

The All Progressives Congress has continued to spring surprises in Saturday’s general elections, winning the Senatorial and Presidential polls in unit 004 Hinderea Road, Liverpool area, Apapa Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, Mr Jimi Agbaje, voted at the polling unit.

Announcing the results after delays in sorting the votes, the Polling Officer, Mr Omolain Ehichioya, said the APC polled 83 votes in the presidential election at the unit while PDP got 80 votes.

The Director General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation, South, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has won his polling unit.

While the Peoples Democratic Party scored 137 votes, the All Progressives Congress came second with 88 votes.

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has changed his position against the conduct of elections in the South-East.

Kanu had earlier ordered that elections would not take place in the area unless the Federal Government agreed to a referendum to determine the sovereignty of Biafra.

The South-East governors and the apex socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, had tackled Kanu on this issue.


But in a statement made available to our correspondent on Friday in Awka, Anambra State by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group said it reached the decision to allow polls in the area after consultations with stakeholders.

The statement reads in part, “It’s important we notify the world at large and the indefatigable global IPOB family in particular that our supreme leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has called-off the election boycott in Biafra land.

“ After a brief emergency session of the Directorate of State late last night, presided over by our leader, where it was determined that all our terms and conditions had been met by those wishing us to lift the ban on voting, it was unanimously agreed that the boycott should be lifted.
