Jokes Etc / Just For Laughs: 20 Bizarre Thoughts Every Woman Has During Her Period by Jemishades: 10:25am On Dec 21, 2016
Getting your period is a major downer. It’s like life’s stop sign, rendering you incapacitated. You wish you can stop everything but no you can't you have to go to school or work.

Periods are the worst time of the month for females. We feel like we’re dying, we hate everyone and everything, work isn’t optional and all we want to do is crawl into our beds and never come out. Our guy friends, boyfriends and dads can’t feel our pain, but all of the women in our lives can relate.

We love to complain about our periods, regardless of the fact that we’ve been dealing with them every month since we were 13(ish). It doesn’t matter; girls love to complain and love to have people who will listen. Complaining about your period basically, ensures a great audience. We have a love/hate relationships with our periods because it’s an excuse to eat whatever we want and to be a huge bitch,

As women, we've been raised not to overshare, to "be a lady". Well, I've never been embarrassed to tell someone (male or female) when I'm on my period. But I have maybe had a bit more restraint in sharing these other thoughts I have while menstruating, and I am sure, I am not the only one that has these thoughts. If you are a guy, you can read this and understand what goes on in a woman's head while she is on her period.

1. “Am I dying?”

Seriously, it is not normal to bleed this much and not die.

2. “I’m so bloated.”

UGH! Why am I so fat today? This is the worst feeling ever. Gosh, I look so unattractive.

3. “At least I’m not pregnant!”

This is probably the ONLY upside to getting your period, literally.

4. “Sorry I’m being annoying right now, but I’m on my period.”

Get-out-of-jail-free card? Thank you very much, uterus.

5. "Has it always hurt this much?"

We've been going through this for a while now, but the pain just feels worse everytime.

6. “Anyone have a tampon/ pad?”

Somebody needs to wingardium leviosa a tampon or pad to me right now because there is nothing worse than sitting at work/school realising you forgot to bring backup.

7. “Must I use a pad?”

#TBT: Pads! Hahaha, these are literally adult diapers, very uncomfortable.

8. “Seriously?! Another sheet bites the dust?”

Every girl has had to experience something along these lines. There’s nothing worse than drifting off to sleep realise the crimson monster has made its way through your sheets. Those sheets will never look the same

9. "As anyone ever died from Menstrual pain?"

It hurts so bad, I wonder if anyone has died from this.

10. "I need a hot shower"

You wish you can have a hot shower every hour because you feel dirty, and that's the only thing that can make you feel better.

11. “I can eat whatever I want. I deserve it.”

The best part (like there is one) of being on our periods is that fact that we can rationalise any and every morsel of food that passes through our lips.

12. “I need chocolate!”

This is self-explanatory, but didn't mum just say chocolates will just make me feel worse?

13. “I don’t have to go to the gym, right?”

Who the hell wants to do jumping jacks on their period? Not me, that’s for sure. Who even thinks about exercising in this condition

14. “This is my favourite underwear now"

You have your date-night underwear, your daytime underwear and then the reject pile that’s reserved for your period week. We may have been dealing with this for years, but for some reason, we never learn our lesson.

15. “I’m allowed to be mean.”

I can be a huge b**ch and no one can say a damn thing because it’s my hormones speaking! #Winning

16. “I hate everyone.”

All women are more irritable on their periods, and with good reason. This time of the month is painful and uncomfortable, putting us on edge for every conversation we’re going to engage in.

17. “I just want to curl up in a ball and die.”

I. Need. My. Bed. Right. Now.

18. “Why do I have to go to work today?”

I can just call in sick now, this is literally making me sick. Women should totally get a day off during that time of the month. I mean you all have that one day that is significantly worse than the rest.

19. Did The Earth Just Move?

Every now and then, your body expels a glob so Earth-shattering that you can't help it when your eyes widen in absolute shock. This is the kind of stuff that should be coming out of Godzilla not a little human like me.

20. I WISH I WAS A GUY!

If you have not uttered these words, you haven’t really experienced a period. Men don’t know how good they have it.

Fashion / Men's Talk: 6 Ways To Wear An Oxford Shirt by Jemishades: 10:39am On Dec 13, 2016
This is one of the most versatile fashion items anyone can own, especially men. It originates from Scotland, where factories experimented with weaves to create four new styles, each named after one of the four best-known universities at the time: Yale, Cambridge, Harvard and Oxford.

If you've never heard of the other shirts, you are not alone, I just heard about them, all thanks to this article – only the Oxford has proved popular enough to not be cut from production.

The oxford shirt is known as woven dress shirt. It is woven from two different strands of yarn (which gives it that distinctive marled appearance) and often, but not always, features a button-down collar. It is employed to make a particular casual-formal cloth in dress shirts. It is versatile as it can switch from formal to casual wear. The oxford shirt has been on trend for over 100 years, now you see why it's a must-have in every man's closet. Now let's see how we can wear this versatile piece.

1. With Chinos

This is a safe way to wear the oxford shirt. Thanks to its history as an integral part of the polo uniform, so it makes sense to pair one with an Ivy League staple for a look that's safe but distinctive.

Consider pairing them with lightweight chinos in neutral and pastel colours. Bright colours may make you look tacky. No matter how much I love red, I won't advise you to pair red chinos with an oxford shirt, that's just wrong.

2. With a jumper
This is one of my favourite things to pair an oxford shirt with. Oxfords are known for their slightly coarser texture, which makes them perfect for knitwear. This is perfect during the cold weather, or times you just want to feel warm and cosy.

Mid- to heavy-gauge jumpers work best for layering over an Oxford shirt, creating a look that delivers on function (it’s warm) and forms (it adds more visual interest up top). When choosing colours, always opt for tonal variations, or clash them like you mean it.

3. Open over a t-shirt

If you are thinking of wearing the oxford shirt in a casual look, this is perfect. Before oxfords were worn alone, T-shirts were worn under them. You have to be careful when wearing it like this, so you don't look like a teenager. Make sure the T-shirt is relatively plain and the shirt not so baggy in the fit that it looks like you’re waiting to grow into it. To kill this look, you need to practise.

4. With a suit

Some fashion experts have argued that it’s a sin to wear an oxford shirt with a suit, but this is no sin in my books. Sure, its button-down collar might read casual, but in the past one year, tailoring has been shrugging off its stuffiness lately, so styling tricks that dress-down your two-piece aren’t so much off-key as on point.

But remember that the suit must lean casual, so don’t try teaming an Oxford with super-sleek wool-silk suiting.

5. With suit separates

If you are scared of wearing your oxford shirt with a full suit, then swap it for suit separates. You can pair it either with your suits blazer or pants. Choose suits separates made with wool, tweed, cotton twill or corduroy, that will make the most of an Oxford’s off-duty quality, rather than jar with it.

6. With jeans

The oxford shirt will definitely not look out of place with something rough like jeans. You can pair your oxford shirt with a t-shirt and jeans or just with jeans. Just make sure it doesn't look sloppy.

Business / 7 Great Ways To Cut Down On Your Monthly Expenses by Jemishades: 10:57am On Dec 05, 2016
Ever wondered why you are always having an empty wallet? If you answered yes then trust me you're not alone. If you ever use social media often, you will might have come across endless jokes and memes like “I love running because I always run out of money” or “There is no difference between me and a monkey because both of us live off peanuts.” Well, truth be told, although it hurts to see our money run of out from our hands so quickly, somewhere you are the one who is to be blamed.

Be it your extra expenses or the YOLO attitude, you often end up spending more than you need to. Not that these expenses are unnecessary, but they are definitely avoidable, given you take a smart approach. So here are some surprising ways of cutting down your monthly expenses. So go ahead and try these ways and let us know if these really worked for you.

1. Avoid Card Payments
We find card payments very convenient and they sound reasonable because you don’t have to carry extra cash always. But when you start using credit or debit cards for payments, you lose track of the money spent and you can’t check your account balance every other day. Also with credit cards, before you even realize it, half of your salary is already gone in the bills. Plus, you won’t be a spendthrift if you pay with cash.

2. Talk To Your Bank For Interesting Deals
If you have been a valuable customer to your bank, then you can definitely have a chat with your bank officials about any lucrative deals where you can save some money. You can talk to them about reducing the interest rates on loans you have taken, reduction in the EMI rates or credit card payments.

3. Sell Your Unused Items
One of the toughest things to do on this earth is to let go your clothes or items that are close to your heart. But if those clothes don’t fit you anymore or the items are of no use to you, then it’s better to sell them off and save some extra money for your monthly budget.

4. Say Hello To Vouchers And Sales
While you might not be fond of this idea of waiting for sale or using vouchers, but these two are surprisingly great at saving money. In fact, you should even consider buying groceries during the sale from the supermarket, instead of going for the branded ones.

Career / Should You Wear Perfume To Work? by Jemishades: 9:52am On Nov 28, 2016
We all know that an employee must have personal hygiene. No company will want an employee who cannot present him/herself. Personal hygiene as a whole lot to do with your appearance and also you smell. I am not talking about you having a bad odour, I mean too much perfume/cologne.

It is important in a professional setup for an employee to maintain decorum, this is also applicable especially in the matter of personal grooming habits. One of the major factors of physical appearance is the perfume one wears.

Have you ever felt irritated by the intensity of a colleague's perfume? Well, I have. A number of people wear perfume not just because of personal hygiene, some just do it as a way of seeking attention, the bad kind.

In some states in the US, there is a legal move to outlaw perfumes in the workplace. Some private companies have even banned it. Now for us in Nigeria, it hasn't gotten to that point yet (I haven't heard of anything like that).

I think placing a ban of perfume is just excessive and rigid. But if we don't want our companies to start making policies like that, we should be mindful of how we wear perfume.

The principle of avoiding strong fragrances at the workplace is justified to a certain extent as it might cause a distraction to other employees. But one does not need to ban it altogether.

We should be able to wear perfume as long as it doesn’t cause anyone inconvenience. But it is difficult to determine what kind of perfume is workplace friendly.

What to be kept in mind while wearing perfume at work?

It is important to realise that the convenience of the colleagues in the workplace has to be taken into consideration. The employee needs to keep in mind the sensitivity of the people who work with him. The colleagues in close proximity to him can inhale the fragrance which will linger in the air for a long period of time. Excessive fragrance can cause nasal irritation, nausea, dizziness, headaches, and breathing problems. One might not be aware of a colleague’s health problems hence it’s better to keep the perfume subtle.

At times, it is not always the perfume which is the culprit. There are various laundry detergents, shampoos, soaps, and fragrant makeup products which may be responsible for emitting a strong smell. Therefore it is not always necessary that wearing perfumes must be avoided. One should take care if his hygiene products are not too fragrant.

Another reason why wearing strong perfume at work is not advisable is because it draws a lot of attention to the person wearing it. While passing by a co-worker or even on walking into the board room, people present will immediately notice the presence of such a person. This kind of attention gives a wrong impression of the employee. According to workplace etiquette, such people seek attention to make their presence felt. This can create a negative impression in the minds of the head of the company as well as the manager. Consequently, one should avoid strong fragrances at work.

Use of perfume is a personal hygiene of certain people. It avoids body odour and emits a pleasing smell. Excess of anything is unfavourable and same is the case in the use of perfume as well. When an employee’s perfume is causing discomfort to someone, the manager can bring it to his notice in a polite manner. This will avoid any kind of miscommunication between the manager and the employee. At the same time, the workplace environment will not be very strict; instead, it’ll be a healthy one.

Fashion / 10 Bra Mistakes Most Women Make by Jemishades: 11:33am On Nov 22, 2016
Lingerie shopping has become one of my favourite past times, not only because I love a good supportive bra, more so because there are more sizes and styles and brands than literally ever before. A lot of women don't enjoy shopping for bras and I can understand why. I never liked it, till about 2 years ago. Choosing the right bra for your shape and size isn't always that easy, and the truth is it is quite frustrating. You don't exactly have a permanent size. And after trying over 100 bras, you might end up not finding the right one for you.

To help you avoid all that discomfort and frustration, I have come up with a series which will analyse the most common mistakes women make while choosing a bra, various recommendations to help you choose the right bra for you and also the right fit.

One thing you should realise when it comes to bras is that something can work for 500 other people and still not be right for you, and that's OK. It's not a flaw with your body or the bra, the bra is not just right for you. Just be patient and be willing to spend the time to try different brands and styles and shapes, till you find what works for you. I hope this post and the coming ones will make this experience easier and more pleasant for you.

1. Choosing a bra by cup size

You shouldn't be choosing a bra based on cup size. Instead start with a numerical band size. Meaning you may be a D with one band size but an E with another size band. A 32D bra is a cup size smaller than a 34D, for example. Letting go of whatever cup size you think you are will allow you to explore and find the best-fitting bra for you.

2. Wearing a bra that's too small

Many women’s identities are tied up in their cup sizes, making them resistant to go up a cup size in order to go down a band size. But you may be wearing a 36C when your ribcage measurement is a 32...which would require you to buy a bra that’s a 32E. Getting a bra with a smaller back band may make your cup sound huge, but you need to own that larger cup size — it means your bra will actually fit you better.

3. Fastening your bra on the tightest hooks

When measuring your band size, you should go according to the outermost set of hooks, not the innermost. A bra is going to stretch about three inches in its lifetime, and when it does, that’s when you go to the next set of hooks. Buy a bra that fits snugly on the last set of hooks, and only later should you need to use the tighter ones.

4. Wearing the right outfit with the wrong bra

You can have the right bra, but it may not be for what you're trying to wear. If you need to go get fitted for a new strapless bra or something with a less traditional back to pull off the dress you just bought, do it!

5. Thinking you can wear one bra with every type of outfit

Yeah, you just can’t. Certain dresses are going to require a more perky shape, while some shirts might look better if your breasts sit lower and flatter. Try different bras for each item of clothing you have to ensure you’re pairing your outfit with the best bra possible.

Nairaland / General / 6 Tips To Help Avoid Post Holiday Spending Hangover by Jemishades: 12:10pm On Nov 18, 2016
As we get ready to welcome December, the festive season is upon us, and I am sure a lot of us can't wait to take a break and probably shop till we drop. I was a bit sceptical about this festive period, because of the recession in the country. But from the information got recently, the Lagos main market, Idunmota, is flooding with shoppers, already starting their holiday shopping. We all need to be careful how we spend this season because prices of commodities have risen.

When the country was still a bit better, a lot of people complain of having the post-holiday spending hangover. You don't have to be hungover from your holiday spending if you spend wisely. The following tips are to help you spend wisely this holiday season.

1. Make a budget

I don't mean you having a hazy idea of what you can afford, I am talking about a written budget. A lot of people don't even make a written budget, they feel that since they know what they can afford, that's all that matters. Let's be clear: A hazy idea is not a budget.

You need to sit down (with your significant other if you share the bills) and write down your holiday budget. Write everything even down to the little things you thing are not significant. Everything is significant in finance. Assign the amounts you want to spend on everything, everything needs a specific budget, including people.

Within the next week, you need to sit down (with your significant other if you share the bills) and write down your holiday budget. To do this, you need to include all these:

Add it all up and balance that against what you can afford. Once you get the total for everything, you may find you have to pare down spending for some people or eliminate others altogether.

2. Be creative

The internet is filled with DIY's so you don't have to spend money on everything. You need to get creative so you can get your family and friends what they need without spending a lot of money. You can learn to cook, instead of eating out. You probably don't have to go out, you can enjoy this holiday by thinking of creative ways you can spend time with your family and friends at home.

3. Don't shop with big spenders

If you shop with people who don't have a problem spending big, you also will be inclined to do the same. I recommend you shop with a spouse, trusted confidante, or someone who understands your budget constraints. Use teamwork to resist those impulse buys. If you shop with someone who had no problem spending three times your budget, you also won't know when you'll go over budget.

4. Shop like it’s a job.
Always remember that selling is a business. Retailers are trying to sell you more. It’s their job. But there are two sides to every transaction. Consider it your job to stay in control of your decisions. Remember that you need to spend responsibly, so don't listen to the sweet talk of the retailers, you are also there for business.

5. Look for deals

Make sure you look for deals for things you plan to get this festive period. This will help you save money. Even if you can afford it, still ask the retailer if you can get a discount. Don't be shy or embarrassed, learn to be a Yoruba mother, She can bargain anything, just so she gets the best price. Learn not to pay full price for everything.

6. Save

It may seem too late to save for your holiday spending, but you can use this tip for next year. Remember to save for the treat you want to give yourself the coming year, so you won't have to worry about powering people or going over budget.

Literature / 8 Nigerian Books Everyone Should Read by Jemishades: 9:21am On Nov 18, 2016
There has never been a better time to be a lover of literature, the growing popularity of books has spurned these days. Either it's the old classic my amazing mum made me read or the new ones, Nigerian literature has grown.

It's really heart-breaking when I find someone who doesn't appreciate literature. Books have the power to make you a time traveller taking you into the past to learn things you never witnessed, and can also take you places around the world (no visa required).

I grew up reading books, even if I didn't like it then, but I am thankful my mum continued to push me to read the classic books that she enjoyed while in school. These books have given me an insight into our history, even better than history textbooks. I get to meet new characters (people) anytime I pick a book up. I get to see and experience different situations from another person's eyes.

I have made a list of 8 Nigerian books everyone should read. This list includes the classics and the newbies who have found a place in my heart. These books brilliantly capture the core Nigerian experience which in the end varies for every Nigerian. The books are in no particular order.

This list is by no means conclusive, as there are many Nigerian books out there that are beautifully written and share different Nigerian experiences. I'll try to tell you why these books made my list without giving any spoilers. You are free to include other Nigerian books you've enjoyed in the comment box.

1. Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe

This is the most popular modern African literature. This book is what I call the Nigerian Jollof rice of literature. It was written by Chinua Achebe and was first published in 1958. I can remember this books recommended to me over five times before I finally took my mum's copy and read it.

Things Fall Apart highlights the fight between colonialism and traditional societies. It tells the story of Okonkwo a man famous in the surrounding villages for being a wrestling champion. Okonkwo was a man clinging onto his cultural/traditional beliefs even in the face of change. Not being ready to change when change comes, often has dire consequences as Okonkwo finds out. This book helped me see "change" in another light. I also made me think of ways I can embrace change and development without losing my values.

2. Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives, Lola Shoneyin

The first thing I thought of when I saw this book, was Fuji House of Commotion. Both stories are a bit difference, but they tell the story of a polygamous family. The Family head Baba Segi had three wives and they all happen to tolerate each other before the fourth comes along, who happened to be the educated one.

Each wife gets her turn to narrate and tell her story. The book touches on polygamy, rape, and African tradition, issues very prevalent today. If you need a book that'll make you laugh and also touch serious issues, this book is for you.

3. The Joys of Motherhood, Buchi Emecheta

This one book I came across by chance. I happened to stumble on it when I was in SS2, it was just right on my desk and I didn't know who dropped it there. And I am using this medium to thank the person that left it on my desk, the book was amazing.

The book takes on the role of women in the society. The basis of the novel is the "necessity for a woman to be fertile, and above all to give birth to sons". It tells the tragic story of Nnu-Ego, daughter of Nwokocha Agbadi and Ona, who had a bad fate with childbearing.

Read this book, and I am sure you'll appreciate women more.

4. Ake: The Years of Childhood, Wole Soyinka

Wole Soyinka is a genius of literature. He is the first African to be given a Nobel Prize in Literature. He has so many literary works, but I chose this because it's his memoir. He tells the story of his childhood and we get to see a transitional period in Nigeria through the eyes of little Wole. From traditional Yoruba worship to Christianity, British rule to Nigeria’s independence.

5. Under the Udala Trees, Chinelo Okparanta

Under the Udala Trees is a deeply searching, powerful debut about the dangers of living and loving openly. It tells the story of Ijeoma and how her life changed at the height of the Biafran war when her father died. The book also touches homosexuality, as Ijeoma happened to fall in love with a girl from another ethnic group.

The reason this book is on my list, it's because it touches a very sensitive topic during a sensitive time.

6. Purple Hibiscus, Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie

I had to choose between Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun, both by the same author and I chose Purple Hibiscus for this list. The reason is because I read both books during the same period, but I connected to purple hibiscus better, but both books are really good. The book tells the story of the Achike family through the eyes of the Kambili the only daughter in the family. The book is essentially about the disintegration of her family unit and her struggle to grow to maturity, all these during the military era.

7. Efuru, Flora Nwapa

This book is the Gala and Lacasera of Nigerian books. This classic book almost escaped my list, till a colleague of mine made me read it, thank God for that. The author was the 1st AFRICAN female writer and she was Nigerian. That enough should make you want to read it and also it is also themed on feminism.

The book is about Efuru, an Igbo woman who lived in a small village. Throughout the story, Efuru wishes to be a mother, though she is an independent-minded woman and respected for her trading ability. The book is rich in portrayals of the Igbo culture and of different scenarios which have led to its current status as a feminist and cultural work.

8. Black ass, Igoni Barret

This book is Igoni Barret's first novel and it is funny, fierce, inventive and daringly provocative. It is a modern satire that tells the story of Fury Wariboko, a 33-year-old man born and bred in Lagos. He wakes up on the morning of his job interview to discover he has turned into a white man. As he hits the city streets running, still reeling from his new-found condition, Fury finds the dead ends of his life open out before him. As a white man in Nigeria, the world is seemingly his oyster – except for one thing: despite his radical transformation, Fury's ass remains robustly
black.

There are still a few that say sorry, not all men find it hard to apologise
Romance / 9 Signs He Will Never Stop Loving You by Jemishades: 12:14pm On Nov 17, 2016
Finding a man who's willing to and ready to be with you, settle down and love you forever is no easy task, I mean life is no fairy-tale. So when you do find the one, it's like walking down the street and finding a bag filled with 100 dollar bills (Naira no get value anymore).

We all have our own personal definitions of Mr Right. But there’s more to a relationship than just going through the motions together. Who hasn’t seen the couple everyone thinks is perfect? You wish you had a relationship like theirs. That is until they break up the minute they hit a rough patch. The minute they broke up, you were left in complete shock and confusion. You may start to wonder what are the traits of a "perfect" man?

Truth is, there is no such thing as the perfect man, only the man perfect for you. Men sometimes get a bad rap, the stereotypical man will never be sweet or romantic or love you forever. That is all a lie. When a man finds the person he knows he’ll be spending the rest of his life with, he’ll certainly work his hardest to keep them by his side at all times.

You’ve daydreamed about what it will be like when you find that incredible guy, the one who truly loves you and will want to spend the rest of his life with you. Waking up every single day feeling grateful that he snagged such an incredible woman. Well, don’t worry here are the signs that you’ve finally found a man who will love you forever.

1. He is fully committed to your relationship

A real man will fight for your relationship, that if you are also willing to fight. Being there throughout the good times is easy. It’s when the going gets tough that it’s important that you both stick together. They understand how important their relationship is, and won’t let anything at all get in the way of persevering.

2. He doesn't avoid problems

Relationships aren’t always easy. Anytime two people choose to blend their lives together and become a couple things can get a little complicated. He doesn’t bottle up his feelings until he explodes. If something is bothering him within the relationship, he brings it up carefully and respectfully. He is comfortable talking through the issues he’s been having and will make a genuine effort to fix any underlying issue that’s been plaguing the relationship. No problem is too big and you can overcome it together. Things aren’t always going to be like fairytale like, but he’s still your idea of prince charming

3. He is not afraid to apologise

While some guys will avoid apologising and instead choose to blow it off and pretend like nothing happened, simply moving on from it. This guy is not like that. If he screwed up, he will go out of his way to make it up to you. He’s the type to give a sincere apology. If he knows he hurt you in any way it will completely destroy him, to the point that he will be pulling out all the stops to make sure you forgive him.
