Shepherd Bushiri: South Africa issues arrest warrant for fugitive preacher

South Africa has issued an arrest warrant for controversial millionaire pastor Shepard Bushiri, who skipped bail and returned home to Malawi.

On Saturday he told his social media followers that he had left South Africa because he had received death threats.

The preacher, who was on bail and awaiting trial for money laundering and fraud, had previously said he wanted to clear his name.

It is not clear how or when Mr Bushiri left South Africa.

Africa Live: Updates on this and other stories
In an interview with the BBC, Mr Bushiri refused to reveal how he escaped.

But the BBC's Nomsa Maseko in Malawi's capital, Lilongwe, reports that one possibility being considered is that he and his wife Mary were smuggled out by a sophisticated syndicate which specialises in taking stolen cars from South Africa to Malawi.

There have also been suggestions in the South African press that he was smuggled out in Malawi's presidential jet - something which has been denied by the authorities in both countries.

How has Shepherd Bushiri caused a diplomatic row?
Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera was in South Africa on a state visit last week, and there has been speculation in South Africa that a member of his entourage had aided Mr Bushiri's escape.

This has been denied by officials in both Malawi and South Africa, but a diplomatic row is brewing.

Malawi's foreign minister told the BBC that he thought the South African authorities suspected the Malawians were trying to smuggle out the controversial preacher.

"When we were coming to Malawi leaving South Africa, we were exposed to stringent checks. It is just now that we are beginning to realise that maybe there was a suspicion that we were trying to smuggle Bushiri out of South Africa," Malawi's foreign minister Eisenhower Mkaka told the BBC's Nomsa Maseko on Saturday.

On Monday morning he then complained, very publicly, on Twitter about the seven-hour delay to the president's journey, which included "vague security reasons" for thorough checks of the presidential plane.

He noted that the South African authorities had categorically stated that Mr Bushiri had not escaped on the presidential plane.

But he described South Africa's treatment of President Chakwera as "improper".

Who is Shepherd Bushiri?
Mr Bushiri has been described as one of the richest religious leaders in Africa.

He claims to have cured people of HIV, made the blind see, changed the fortunes of the impoverished and, on at least one occasion, appeared to walk on air, although none of these claims have been scientifically proven.

media caption'I don’t think there is any sickness I can heal, but Jesus Christ can heal'
He grew up in Mzuzu, a city in northern Malawi and moved to Pretoria in South Africa where he leads his church - the Enlightened Christian Gathering.

He is so popular that he has been known to fill sports stadiums with followers.

But he has also been accused of preying on poor people, desperate to improve their lives, by selling merchandise including "miracle oil".

The authorities in Botswana shut down his church after it claimed that money could be summoned out of nothing, which contravened financial regulations.

Meeting the man who says he can walk on air
What is he accused of?
Mr Bushiri is accused of money laundering and fraud, along with his wife and two others.

Crime investigators say the case involves 102 million South Africa rand ($6.6m; £5m).

Might he lose his house in South Africa?
Mr Bushiri appeared at Pretoria's Magistrates Court on 21 October to hear the charges and was granted bail on 4 November.

He skipped bail sometime last week, something he described on Saturday as "a tactical withdrawal meant to preserve lives".

The South African government said on Sunday that it had initiated the extradition process for Malawi to hand him over.

The South African police then issued the warrant for his arrest on Monday and said that if he doesn't present himself to court before 19 November he will forfeit his residence.

The trial is scheduled for May.

An Israeli ambulance worker caught on camera spitting on portraits of Jesus while visiting a Christian home to carry out a Covid test has been fired.

The medic was seen removing protective clothing before spitting on three pictures in the communal hallway of the block of flats in Jaffa in Tel Aviv.

When confronted, the medic claimed the imagery was a form of idolatry forbidden by the Hebrew Bible.

Israel's ambulance service said it "strongly condemned" his actions.

The Magen David Adom (MDA) employee, it said, was "unworthy of representing the organisation" and was dismissed immediately.

The incident happened on Sunday when the medic went to the block - whose residents are all Christian, according to media reports.

Security camera footage shows the worker removing his mask and overalls before turning around and spitting three times in succession.

He is then seen putting his mask back on and getting into a lift.

As he was leaving the building, the medic was confronted by a tenant who filmed their exchange on a mobile phone.

When the tenant asked why he spat at the pictures, the worker replied: "In Judaism this is foreign worship."

media captionWhat does a second lockdown feel like?
The video shows the tenant remonstrating with the medic, telling him: "You spat on my pictures, which we believe in, in front of my eyes on the camera. Why did you do that?"

The medic replies: "In our Torah it is written that as much foreign worship as possible should be kept away as much as possible," before complaining to the tenant that he was not wearing a mask.

The incident was reported to MDA, which questioned the medic and fired him.

In a tweet, the ambulance service said it "strongly condemned" what happened, adding that it works with, and employs, members of all religions and sections of society.

US federal election officials have said the 2020 White House vote was the "most secure in American history", rejecting President Donald Trump's fraud claims.

"There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised," a committee announced.

They spoke out after Mr Trump claimed without proof that 2.7 million votes for him had been "deleted".

He has yet to concede to the president-elect, Democrat Joe Biden.

The result of the 3 November election was projected by all the major US TV networks last weekend.

The BBC now projects that Mr Biden has won Arizona, extending his lead by 11 electoral college votes - he now has 290, with Mr Trump on 217. It is the first time the state has voted Democrat since 1996.

Election results state by state
Biden has won: What happens now?
How will this endless US election end?
Mr Trump has launched a flurry of legal challenges to projected results in key states and levelled unsubstantiated allegations of widespread electoral fraud.

Meanwhile, China has finally extended its congratulations to Mr Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris after days of silence. "We respect the choice of the American people," a foreign ministry spokesman said. Russia has said it wants to wait for an "official result".

Why is the statement important?
The announcement marks the most direct rebuttal from federal and state officials of President Trump's unsubstantiated claims of election fraud.

Thursday's joint statement was released by the Election Infrastructure Government Co-ordinating Council - which is made up of senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security and the US Election Assistance Commission as well as state-level officials who oversee elections and representatives of the voting machine industry.

"The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history. Right now, across the country, election officials are reviewing and double checking the entire election process prior to finalizing the result," the group said.

"While we know there are many unfounded claims and opportunities for misinformation about the process of our elections, we can assure you we have the utmost confidence in the security and integrity of our elections, and you should too," it added, without naming Mr Trump directly.

"When you have questions, turn to elections officials as trusted voices as they administer elections."

media captionObama: Claims of election fraud are "delegitimising" democracy
The statement was posted to the website of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (Cisa), which is part of the Department of Homeland Security.

The head of Cisa, Christopher Krebs, has reportedly incurred the White House's displeasure over a Cisa website called Rumor Control, which debunks election misinformation.

Why 2020 is not the same as the 2000 recount
On Thursday, Mr Krebs shared a post by an election law expert that said: "Please don't retweet wild and baseless claims about voting machines, even if they're made by the president."

Cisa assistant director Bryan Ware stepped down on Thursday. The White House had asked for his resignation earlier this week, Reuters reports. Mr Krebs expects to be fired, the news agency says.

Hours before the statement was released, Mr Trump tweeted that voting software used in 28 states had deleted millions of votes for him, but presented no evidence for the stunning claim, which appeared to originate from the obscure TV network One America News and was flagged by Twitter.

The claim was linked to the miscounting of votes in one Republican-leaning Michigan county. Unofficial results initially favoured Mr Biden but were later corrected in President Trump's favour. State election officials acknowledged what had happened, saying human error was to blame, rather than a software malfunction.

Biden phones US allies
On winning the election, US presidents call up their peers around the world. Who they speak to and what they talk about can show their foreign policy agendas for the years ahead.

On Wednesday Biden’s transition team announced he had spoken with the leaders of Australia, Japan and South Korea. All three are key US allies in the region, and the president-elect told Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and President Moon Jae-in of South Korea that he wanted to deepen those ties.

Trump made security in the region - particularly against a nuclear-armed North Korea - a key feature of his presidency, holding historic meetings with its leader Kim Jong-un. But he also clashed on occasion with traditional US allies in the area, including Australia. Mr Trump infamously rang then-Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the start of 2017 over the fate of some 1,000 refugees - a call Mr Turnbull called “very frank and forthright”

I guess this is tight. The only reason the election isn't over yet is because votes are still trickling in. In most states, including the swing states, more than 97% have been collated.

Over 5 million popular vote difference and 270 breaking vote met. The margin of 76 is no joke. It is going to be difficult to reverse. It has never happened in the history of American election and this will not be an exception. Trump is just scared of accepting defeat. He is making it look like he might never recover from the nightmare.

may the best man win

Why are trump supporters not talking about states like North Carolina where trump is leading by 73,000 and mail in votes are still coming in, though less than 15,000 or Florida where trump is leading by over 400,000 and more votes are still coming in by mail though less than 1%?
Why is no one alleging fraud? Most states by law require recounts if the vote margin is less than 1% because it's a daunting task and in some cases you even have to pay for the recounts.

Georgia in question has Joe Biden leading by 14,000 votes and mind you this is a republican controlled state for over 15 years.

The recount in Georgia has political understone because of a senate run off coming up next year January. Georgia state secretary earlier defended the result as being fair but was pressured by the two republican senate candidates.

If the recount falls within the 0.5% margin, the recount would have to be done electronically as against hand count, by law.

Trump and his supporters are just making efforts to put the electoral system in America into disrepute. This I see as very unpatriotic and selfish.
this election is very very tight oh

Recount will only change a few hundreds as a result of human error but to change or upturn any state with winning margin of thousand is impossible.

Biden lead in each state of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania is over 30k, Michigan is even about 40k.

I hope the doubting Thomases listened to Arkansas and Massachusetts governors today both are Republican governor saying Trump does not have the right to direct federal attorneys to probe election fraud in state that it has not happened in the history of America, that Biden won the election.

The least Trump could ask for is a recount in state the lead of margin is 1% or less which Georgia State has accepted to recount manually but they don't see the result changing to what it is after recount.

A senior republican has asked Trump to concede defeat or fail the second time after recount.

Republican governors that have said Biden won
no fraud:
1)Massachusetts governor - Republican
2)Arkansas governor - Republican
3)Georgia governor - Republican
3)Maryland governor - Republican

Las las this will turn to Atiku is coming that never came.

Biden needed Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan to win the electoral college vote and he did win with margin of over 20k in each of the three states. Alaska, North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia are insignificant to him now, winning them is just for bragging right because he's hit the required 270.

Fake rumour over Biden's inauguration guest list
Shruti Menon

BBC Reality Check, Delhi

As preparations for a Biden presidency gain momentum in the US, there will inevitably be interest in who the president-elect will be inviting as VIP guests to his inauguration in January.

In India, this has prompted widespread social media speculation, not least because of Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris’s Indian heritage (her mother was born in the southern state of Tamil Nadu).

Several users on Twitter and Facebook have been saying former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh – now a senior figure in India’s main opposition party - has been invited as the "chief guest" to the inauguration.

We reached out to Singh's office and received the response that it was “fake news” that he’d received any invitation.

But the false claim has been widely shared on social media, including by many members of Singh’s Congress party.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi – who has had a good working relationship with Donald Trump – has congratulated Joe Biden on his election victory.

According to the New York Times the body that organises the inaugural ceremony has not yet put out a list of invitees.

Foreign Affairs / Us 2020 Election Recount Georgia To Recount Election Ballots By Hand by Jerryjasper(m): 7:30pm On Nov 11, 2020
What impact could the Georgia recount have?
We have reported that Georgia will be doing a full hand recount of its votes for the presidential election.

Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters: "We'll be counting every single piece of paper — every single ballot, every single lawfully cast, legal ballot."

This is what the Trump campaign requested on Tuesday.

Each state has its own recount rules, but in general, the ballots will be re-tallied and re-scanned. In some places, a certain number of ballots are always counted by hand to ensure the validity of the machines.

But recounts have rarely led to a change in the results. It's also important to note that even if Biden loses Georgia, he's still over the 270 vote threshold.

Georgia's state deadline for certifying election results is 20 November.

The Trump campaign earlier said it would also be requesting a recount in Wisconsin.

Columbia University Law School professor Richard Briffault told the BBC there was a recount in Wisconsin in 2016 as well, and it changed a few hundred votes.

The enemy has always been FGN!
They don't care about our education.

ASUU went on strike before this IPPIS issue became an issue.
If FG is sincere, during this lockdown would have been a PERFECT time to address all their issues. Instead, they all relaxed. Afterall their children are not schooling in public universites. They also know how to deceive gullible nigerians (our poor analytical skill/education is their advantage). Reason why they won't want to improve our educational sector. So that anything they say will be swallowed hook, line and sinker!!! Which is also why i pity nigerians, especially students that are siding with FGN undecided

ASUU strike has always been the same thing over the years. MoU/MoA signed by the same FG since 2009 amended in 2013,2017,2019.
Mind you, before ASUU would embark on strike, they always send letters to FG. Most times, FG always ignore. Until ASUU would have no other option than to go on strike. Starting with a WARNING STRIKE.

ASUU talks about revitalization of universites. A 1.1 trillion naira is needed to revamp our universites to be on par with africa first, before the world at large. Since this money cannot be disbursed at once, FG said the money would be paid by installment (200billion each year). They never honour this agreement till today.

ASUU talked about their earned allowances that has run into billions due to accumulation.
FG is still turning them.

ASUU talked about proliferation of universites while the existing ones are barely surviving.
How can FG still be building universites without employing capable hands and these lecturers from existing ones still go there to help out with little or no pay.

All these things were going on before IPPIS entered the picture. FG left every other issue and focused on IPPIS. Thereby making nigerians think ASUU went on strike because of IPPIS.
If IPPIS is so sweet let them add NASS and other top public office(NNPC,FIRS,CBN e.t.c.) including the president there. If it is so sweet why did NASU and SSANU that happily embraced it now turn back to reject it

ASUU are not perfect but I'm very sure the university has been improving over the years(which is still a far cry from what it should be) because of them.

IPPIS as it is will not work in the university system. It infringe in their right to be autonomous.
IPPIS didn't capture lecturers that go for Adjuncts, conferences, sabbatical e.t.c. which are all essential for sharing knowledge (no university works in isolation) and promotion.
Why is FG now making it all about IPPIS all of a sudden

FGN should revamp our universites if not for ASUU that fought for TETFUND to be created.
I wonder if universites would have seats, equipments, lecture theaters and other necessities at all.

Shame on anyone that feels ASUU is the enemy. They are not perfect but they are not the enemy.

FGN is the enemy!
FGN is the enemy!
but with the kind of presidency in place Kai this thing is getting out of hand oh

I really do not know what the government is thinking or their strategy in education sector, but very clearly, the future of Nigeria, as far as University education is concerned is bleak! Forget about all those things you hear about UI, OAU, ABU, etc, there is no Nigerian University that can compete with Universities in South Africa!
Nigerian University lecturers do not have laboratory to do research (I am not talking about teaching laboratories!), the laboratories of Nigerian lecturers are on their laptops and most of them can not even buy quality laptops.
Nigerian Universities are so bad that students from neighbouring countries do not even want to come and learn in Nigeria and hence we loose huge amount of revenue that could have been coming in through education!

FG is to be blamed!
My reasons:
1). Why reach an agreement when you know you will never honour it?
Remember, this same attitude nearly cost the country billions of dollars and they are still trying to sort it out!

2). Why can't you study all the legal implications of your proposed action before taking the action?

Universities have their law which was signed by the FG herself and now the FG is trying to flout (or bend) that very same law by introducing IPPIS.
so you saying that the government is insensitive or maybe they don't give a damn about our education system

Sports / #goatdebate: "MESSI" Has The Goat Lost Form #messivsronaldo by Jerryjasper(m): 1:15pm On Nov 02, 2020
arguably one of the greatest players of the round leather fame the Argentine talisman Lionel Andres Messi has not been in the best of form or we could outrightly say he has been in his worst of form this season last season saw him finishing the laliga satender with 25 goals although he became the league's highest goal scorer the Argentine was at a personal low and with the opening of this season he has not been on his usual self in terms of goals as most of his goals this season has come from the penalty spot and a few assist............... The heat was turned up again when his rival Cristiano Ronaldo also came back from isolation to score two goals to make matters worst the Argentine has not been scoring open play goals ...... Many thought that with the resignation of Barcelona's former embatteled president the Argentine would be back but the story still remains the same and it is a popular saying that when Messi is not in form Barcelona is not in form as the Catalans could only salvage a point from their last match after a defeat at home to their bitter rivals real Madrid........... Much is left to be seen if in the coming matches the little magician will pick up his form and continue to dribble assist and score beautiful goals that the world has known him for .........

Education / ASUU Vs FG What's Your Take Should They Scrap ASUU by Jerryjasper(m): 12:55pm On Nov 02, 2020
We are gradually seeing a 7 month strike by the university lecturers,. Nigerian students are always in a state of dilemma about their education some rent houses off camp and with this lingering strike their rents have probably expired as a Nigerian student you can't even calculate when you will graduate because of the never ending battle btw Assu and fg
As a Nation we have not even gone through the covid-19 pandemic and we are also being faced with the three headed monster called ASUU strike what's your take on this issue is the federal government the one at fault for being insensitive to their plight and to that of students or ASUU are just being over demanding and ridiculous with their demands
