I understand why your banker friend needs additional source of income. Salary is always hardly enough coupled with the fact that the job is never secured especially for contract staff.
But he needs to be very careful in establishing a biz he wont be actively involved in, because he might eventually open it for other people to squander. If he is in marketing dept, he can try out cement purchase and supply based on his location and capital too.

The best is to start preparation now that one day you won't be in that office again, I lost my job over 4months ago and brethren I can tell you its not easy.
