Politics / APC Made Up Of Professional Liars And Propaganda – Jonathan by JibbyTune: 10:35am On Oct 20, 2017

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan says the All Progressives Congress (APC) government is being run on lies and propaganda.

He was speaking in Abuja on Thursday while receiving a PDP national chairmanship aspirant, Professor Tunde Adeniran and members of his campaign team in his office.

Jonathan said the solidarity being shown to the party even though it lost election at the centre in 2015 is a pointer that “there is something in the PDP.”

While pledging to speak up some day on the giant strides recorded by the party in the course of its 16-year stewardship, the former President took a veiled dig at a serving Minister who he said, once stated that all it took a serious government to fix the power challenge was six months.

“The PDP administration for 16 years did well and will continue to do well but this administration has done nothing,” he said.

“They deployed propaganda and lies at a professional level.

“In the power sector, we did well to revive it. A State governor attacked our government, saying that any serious government should be able to fix the power challenge within six months. Today, APC has been in power for how many years now? Fortunately the then governor is in the APC government as a Minister,” he said, fighting a bout of laughter.

Extolling the qualities of Professor Adeniran, Jonathan reminded PDP faithfuls not to forget that for the party to stand a chance to oust the APC in 2019, “we need a competent, reliable and a courageous national chairman ‎who would then lead the party to victory come 2019.”

Our politicians still don’t get it. We understand the partisan politicking and the likes but this is hardly what the country needs right now or in 2019.

The next elections should not be more about taking over power from a non-performing ruling party than it is about the good of the electorates and concrete plans and execution of these projects when eventually elected.https://www.amore.ng/apc-made-up-of-professional-liars-and-propaganda-jonathan/

Nairaland / General / “there Is No Tech Ecosystem In Nigeria” Emeka Okoye Repeats by JibbyTune: 4:08pm On Oct 13, 2017

Nigeria has no culture of R&grin and broad innovation enablers, and without those elements, it would be hard to develop an indigenous technology capability
We cannot have the capacity to evolve our technology ecosystem if we do not invest in the fundamental elements that make technology happen
In Data Science Nigeria today, Emeka Okoye, one of the panelists clarified an earlier comment he made. He had noted in the past that Nigeria does not have any technology ecosystem. Part of his thesis was that Nigeria was simply building applications, instead of instituting technology pillars. He made a case that Nigeria has no culture of R&grin and broad innovation enablers, and without those elements, it would be hard for us to develop an indigenous technology capability.

Politics / Nigerian Woman In The ‘racist Dove Ad’, Lola Ogunyemi Speaks Up by JibbyTune: 10:39am On Oct 12, 2017

Last week, the internet went wild after a Dove ad was labelled ‘racist’

The Nigerian woman in the ad, Lola Ogunyemi has finally spoken up on the ‘racist’ undertone perceived by people

Lola Ogunyemi wrote Tuesday in the Guardian that she agreed with the company’s decision to apologize for its ad, which was seen by many as racially insensitive. But she also said Dove should have defended its creative vision.

“I feel the public was justified in their initial outrage,” she said. “Having said that, I can also see that a lot has been left out.” Dove came under fire after it posted a 3-second GIF to its Facebook page Friday.

It showed a looping image of Ogunyemi removing a dark brown t-shirt to reveal a white woman. She then removes her beige t-shirt to reveal a third woman. “All of the women in the shoot understood the concept and overarching objective — to use our differences to highlight the fact that all skin deserves gentleness,” she said.

Ogunyemi said the women featured in the ad understood the concept, adding that she loved the final product. People congratulated her for “representing Black Girl Magic,” she said.

She also said a version presented as a TV commercial included seven women of different races and ages. Each woman answered the question, “If your skin were a wash label, what would it say?”

Ogunyemi said the TV edit did a better job of representing the campaign’s message. She added that the flap shows how advertisers need to consider the impact their images may have, especially on marginalized groups of women.

Dove took down the ad Saturday. In its apology, the company said the ad “did not represent the diversity of real beauty” that it cares about.

Ogunyemi said she agreed with that response, but added that Dove could have discussed its choice to include her as a face of the campaign. “I am not just some silent victim of a mistaken beauty campaign,” she said. “I am strong, I am beautiful, and I will not be erased.”

Politics / UN Secretary General Calls For Urgent Abolition Of Death Penalty by JibbyTune: 3:12pm On Oct 11, 2017

he death penalty has no place in the 21st century,” Guterres said, speaking alongside Andrew Gilmour, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights.

He welcomed that some 170 countries have either abolished death penalty and put a moratorium on its use, most recently, Gambia and Madagascar.

Guterres added that executions in 2016 were down 37 per cent compared to that of 2015.

The UN chief, however, added that at present just four countries accounted for 87 per cent of all recorded executions.

At least 1,634 people were executed in 25 countries in 2015, Amnesty International reports. Most executions took place in China, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the USA – in that order.

Guterres also expressed concern that the countries that continued executions were also failing to meet their international obligations, particular in relation to transparency and compliance with international human rights standards.

“Some governments conceal executions and enforce an elaborate system of secrecy to hide who is on death row, and why.”

Guterres said lack of transparency showed a lack of respect for the human rights of those sentenced to death and to their families as well as damaging administration of justice more.

He urged nation-states that had abolished death penalty to lend their voices to the call on the leaders of those countries that retained it.

Also, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) called on all countries to strengthen efforts to abolish death penalty.

“We call on all states to ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” Rupert Colville, a spokesperson for OHCHR, said.

The Second Optional Protocols to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) now ratified by 85 states around the globe, requires its parties to abolish death penalty.

ICCPR is the only universal international legal instrument that aims to end the practice.

Foreign Affairs / The United Nations Has Pulled Staff Out Of Two Districts In Southern Malawi by JibbyTune: 4:50pm On Oct 10, 2017

hese districts have severely been affected by the ongoing stories of blood sucking and possible existence of vampires,” the UN Department on Safety and Security (UNDSS) said in a security report on the Phalombe and Mulanje districts that was seen by Reuters.

The Acting UN Resident Coordinator, Florence Rolle, said that based on the report that “some UN staff have relocated while others are still in the districts depending on locations of their operations”.

“UNDSS is continuing to monitor the situation closely to ensure all affected UN staff are back in the field as soon as possible,” Rolle said.

Rolle did not say how many workers had been relocated. Belief in witchcraft is widespread in rural Malawi.

Owing to a dwindling economy, many NGOs and aid agencies operate within the region.

However, the UNDSS reports says NGOs are pulling their personnel from the districts and temporarily suspending their programmes. No particular names were included in the report.

At least five people have been killed in the area since mid-September by lynch mobs accusing them of vampirism. It said mobs searching for vampires have been mounting road blocks in the district, raising security concerns.

Malawian President Peter Mutharika said the reports were “distressing and agonizing”.

“This development has been of grave concern to the President and the entire Government,” his office said in a statement.

Ms Sirleaf took office in 2006, after her predecessor, Charles Taylor, was forced out of office by rebels in 2003, ending the long civil war.
