PoliticsDelta Governorship Rerun: Ogboru Loses At Appeal Court by jidsoon(op): 3:29pm On Sep 22, 2011
An Appeal Court sitting in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Thursday threw out the appeal of Democratic Peoples Party candidate, Chief Great Ogboru, challenging the verdict of the Delta State Election Petitions tribunal which upheld the victory of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan in the January 6 governorship election rerun in the state.

Justice Uzoamaka Ogwuruike-led panel had thrown out Ogboru's petition on July 25, 2011.

However, Ogboru lost again on Thursday after his appeal was thrown out by the judges, who ruled that the DPP candidate failed to prove that he actually won the election.
PoliticsFrsc To Generate N200b From Driver’s Licences, Number Plates by jidsoon(op): 2:10pm On Sep 20, 2011
The inauguration of the new drivers’ license and personalized number plates by President Goodluck Jonathan last Friday, the stage is set for the Federal Government to rake in N200 billion annually from the issuance of vehicle particulars.

Available data showed that no fewer than 12 million drivers’ licensers and eight million vehicles are in circulation in the country.

According to the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Osita Chidoka drivers and vehicle owners across the country have up till August 31, 2012 to comply with the new rule.

Investigation showed that the allocation of number plates would yield a whopping N120 billion to the government coffer while N72 billion would accrue from the issuance of licenses.

Chidoka put the amount payable for a private driver’s licence and number plate at be N6, 000 and N15, 000 respectively.

He did not disclose what commercial driver’s licences and number plates would cost.

An official; who spoke on the matter in confidence said the Joint Tax Board (JTB) of the Federal Government would determine the rate for the commercial vehicle operators. He, however, sad it would not be far different from what private owners would pay.

The FRSC chief had in a paper he presented at the Dance/Award Night at the University of Nigeria Alumni Association, Abuja Branch on December 18, 2007, stated that 12 million driver’s licenses were in circulation.

In his paper entitled: “The Role of the Driver’s License in State Building”, Chidoka had stated: “Despite the acceptance of driver’s license as one of the most acceptable form of identity in Nigeria currently, it is appalling that of the 12 million driver’s licenses in circulation, only two million of them have the correct records of the holders in our database.”

Although the figure would have risen tremendously about three years after, if 12 million drivers’ licenses to be replaced their licenses at N6000 each, the government would earn nothing less than N72 billion.

It was also learnt that there are no readily available records for the number of vehicles in circulation in Nigeria.

But while receiving the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Joseph Daudu in his office in April this year, Chidoka stated that about eight million vehicles currently ply the Nigerian roads.

Besides, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport had, in a statement in October 2009, revealed that more than seven million vehicles operate on Nigerian roads everyday, while answer.com, an online publication, put the figure at five million.

Therefore, going by the estimate given by the FRSC chief, the Federal Government would realize about N120 billion if eight (cool million vehicles owners purchase the new number plate at N15, 000 each.

Chidoka  said officials of the FRSC, FIRS and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, popularly called Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) would render these services in a one-stop -shop being put in place for the purpose.

An official of the FRSC who spoke in confidence said the haphazard manner the issuance of driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates were handled in the past has made it difficult for the Commission to have accurate data on the number of driver’s licenses and vehicles in circulation in Nigeria as at now.

PoliticsTinted Glass: Errant Policemen To Be Demoted by jidsoon(op): 1:01pm On Mar 31, 2011
Any policeman that violates the order of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, on tinted glass will be demoted by a rank, the Commissioner of Police, Anti-bomb Squad Command, Mr. Ambrose Aisabor, has said.

The CP said this during a meeting of Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit commanders in Lagos on Tuesday.

Aisabor said, “Police officers are not exempted from prohibition of tinted glass unless it is factory-fitted. All commands across the nation should enforce it.

“Also, no police personnel is to escort any VIP with tinted glass except the President, the vice-president, the senate president, the deputy senate president, the speaker of the House of Representatives, the deputy speaker and governors. Any policeman found guilty will be demoted by one rank.”

He said the directive was put in place in order to enhance security, adding that the directive was more important now than ever because of the April elections and the need for security checks.

Aisabor however said that those who had vehicles with factory-fitted tinted glass would need a permit to use them.

Earlier this month, the police had issued a statement that tinted glass vehicles are prohibited, save factory-fitted ones.

The CP also said that the anti-bomb squad was capable of checkmating every security threat during the elections, adding that the unit would collaborate with all other security agencies during the elections to prevent any incident of bomb blasts and to ensure violence-free elections.

“Nigerians want free, fair and credible elections. We have received our operation order from the federal headquarters and our roles are specific; EOD must be in Independent National Electoral Commission offices and collation centres and where election materials are kept,” Aisabor said.

On the threats by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta to carry out more attacks, the CP said, “The EOD will ensure that bomb incidents don’t happen again. We are working on information we have to prevent any attack and we are taking precaution to ensure that Nigeria is not turned to Iraq.”

He also implored policemen to exhibit professionalism when carrying out their duties; adding that they should try as much as possible to respect the rights of the citizens they protect and they should not be partisan.

“We are not partisan, we are guided by rules and regulations, and we are therefore supposed to be neutral. The moment people know you are partisan, you are looking for trouble. In fact, you should not vote while wearing your uniform. Make sure you vote in mufti,” Aisabor said.

He added that men of the anti-bomb squad would also carry out routine sweeps at strategic locations of the country in order to avoid any explosion.

He further advised his men and members of the public not to take any information with levity; saying that any information could be useful in preventing attacks.

On the question of whether bags would be allowed at voting units since it was prohibited at many campaign rallies in order to prevent people from concealing dangerous weapons in them; the CP said the issue was still being discussed, adding that only INEC could take a decision on that.

Your doctor or clinic obviously thought you had gonorrhea, the only STD routinely treated with a single shot of ceftriaxone (Rocephin). If that diagnosis is correct, you will be cured; the drug is highly reliable and the depth of the shot will make no difference. It takes a few days for the symptoms to clear, maybe a week before your discharge is gone entirely. If it continues to improve over the next 2-3 days, don't worry about it; but if it stops improving or gets worse again, or if you still have any discharge after a week, return to the clinic to be re-checked.

The other possibility is that the diagnosis was wrong, i.e. you have nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) and not gonorrhea. NGU won't respond to ceftriaxone, but requires treatment with azithromycin (single dose) or doxycycline for 7 days. However, usually one of these treatments is given along with cefttiaxone for gonorrhea, which is the standard management of gonorrhea recommended by CDC and all other public health agencies in the US and other industrialized countries. Was the shot your only treatment? If so, you might call and ask why you weren't also given azithro or doxy.

Finally, I trust you are taking steps to make sure your sex partner(s) are being treated as well.
PoliticsOni V Fayemi: Final Judgement Day For Ekiti by jidsoon(op): 3:51pm On Oct 14, 2010
Three weeks after the adoption of submissions by lawyers, the Court of Appeal sitting in Ilorin, capital of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria, will tomorrow deliver judgment over the governorship tussle between Governor Segun Oni of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.
The chief bailiff of the Appeal Court sent a notice of the impending judgement via SMS to the lawyers to the two parties today. The lawyers had closed their cases on 23 September.
Fayemi is challenging the return of Oni in the 2009 rerun election held in 63 of 177 wards in the state.
The ACN candidate had filed a petition on 2 June 2009 against Oni’s victory in the 27 April and 5 May 2009 rerun elections.
The reconstituted governorship rerun Tribunal, in a split decision of three to two last year, affirmed Oni’s victory.
The judgment delivered by the tribunal chairman, Justice Hamma Barka, upheld Oni’s election on the grounds that Fayemi’s alleged electoral malpractices were not substantial enough to invalidate the results of the polls.
The majority ruling declared Oni winner with 109,000 to Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s 106,000 after deductions of unlawful votes were made.
The minority ruling opposed this by upholding that the petitioners had duly and dutifully proved their case. Two judges supported the minority judgement while three judges endorsed the majority ruling.
Oni’s election as governor has been contentious since 2007 with Fayemi challenging his victory rigorously at the Election Petition Tribunal in Ekiti State.
Oni was thrown out of office after the court of appeal upturned the decision of a lower court after the 14 April 2007 governorship election.
The 2009 rerun election in Ekiti State was marred by violence and intimidation, with many journalists attacked.
The Resident electoral commissioner, Mrs. Ayoka Adebayo, initially refused to announce the results of the re-run election. She claimed that she was under pressure to announce a doctored result.
She temporarily went into hiding, re-emerged and declared Oni winner.
Tomorrow’s judgement will be delivered by five judges of the Court. It is expected that the special panel may be headed by Justice Ayo Salami, the president of the court.

PoliticsObasanjo Promotes Olurin For Ogun Pdp Governorship Ticket (another Yar’adua Meth by jidsoon(op): 10:19am On Oct 13, 2010
Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, and the G-15 lawmakers in the Ogun State Assembly may have reached an accord to present a common candidate in the person of Tunji Olurin, a retired military officer, as the next governor of the state in 2011.

NEXT reliably gathered that, towards this project, Mr Obasanjo held a meeting late Sunday evening at his Hilltop home in Abeokuta, with some Peoples Democratic Party {PDP} stalwarts and the G-15 lawmakers, to perfect the plan for the emergence of Mr Olurin.

Mr Olurin is from the Yewa/Awori zone of the state, an area which is now favoured to produce the next governor for the state, as no one from the area had ever been governor of the state since its creation 30 years ago.

Of late, the posters announcing the candidacy of Mr Olurin have appeared all over the secretariat of a faction of the party hostile to the state governor, Gbenga Daniel, located at Onikolobo area of the state capital, while similar ones were found in major streets.

Ayo Otegbola, a leader of the Yewa/Awori, was reported to have led some other notable citizens of the zone to the meeting, whose focus was on how the 70-year-old Olurin would be supported to be the next governor.

Some of those at the meeting were: Jubril Martins-Kuye, minister for commerce; Buruji Kashamu, a multi-millionaire leader of the party; Tunji Egbetokun, Ogun Assembly Speaker, and other lawmakers; Mr. Olurin, the proposed consensus candidate; and Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, a senator.

Iyabo-Obasanjo to be deputy

The arrangement, according to people familiar with the discussion, is that while Mr. Olurin is to serve as the governor from the Ogun west district, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, a senator from Ogun central, would serve as the deputy governor.

But the faction of the party loyal to Mr. Daniel, the incumbent governor, is opposed to this arrangement. Leaders of the faction claimed that Mr. Olurin’s membership of the party is not up to one year. This would make his candidacy a violation of the party rule that only people with membership of up to a year can fly the party’s flag at the election.

The group also said that, considering the age and health of Mr. Olurin, the sole administrator of Ekiti State in 2007, he is not fit to contest and run the affairs of the state.

“This is another Yar’Adua method used by Obasanjo, which eventually paved way for Jonathan becoming president,” said a party leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

PoliticsYou’re Hypocrites, Jonathan Slams Northern Elders by jidsoon(op): 3:16pm On Oct 08, 2010
Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has declared that some Northern leaders, now claiming to love the North and its people, are just selfish individuals pursuing their own agenda.

President Goodluck Jonathan
The President, in his facebook message titled ‘In Defence Of Life, Liberty And Property’ , noted that when the North was recently plagued by series of human-made and natural disasters, Northern leaders who are now very vocal over the Abuja bomb blast remained silent and inactive.
Jonathan was reacting to the attacks on him by some Northern leaders after the bomb blast on 1 October.
The President reasoned that these Northern leaders specialise in playing one part of the country against the other and riding on sectional sentiments to promote their narrow ambitions.
“To prove to you that their interests are personal and not for the people they claim to represent, you will notice that while this administration has spent considerable time and resources as well as focused attention on the recent floods in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi and Jigawa states and the cholera epidemic in certain parts of Nigeria as well as the lead poisoning that has consumed 400 children in Zamfara State, these so called concerned people have not been known to address any of these issues or offer a word of succour to the victims.
“This is irrefutable proof that their only focus is how to get power and not the wellbeing of the long suffering people of Nigeria whom I have sworn to Almighty God to protect.
“At this critical time, we should be mourning the dead and praying for the families left behind. What they need at this sad hour is not politics but compassion and empathy,” Jonathan said.
The president promised that the Federal Government will do everything possible to share in the pains of the bereaved and the injured.
“We will give the best medical care possible to the injured. We recognise that nothing can compensate for the loss of a loved one. But we offer our shoulders to the bereaved in this moment of need.”

PoliticsEx-militants Expose Okah; He Cloned Mend’s E-mail by jidsoon(op): 2:18pm On Oct 07, 2010
The Joint Revolutionary Council, JRC, comprising of units of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, The Reformed Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force and the Martyrs Brigade, has dissociated the group from the actions of Henry Okah who until recently was the lead arms supplier to a faction of MEND.

Henry-Okah
According to JRC in an online e-mail by its spokesperson with the pseudonym, Cynthia Whyte, to PM NEWS in Port Harcourt, “Henry Okah until recently was the lead arms supplier to a faction of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta. His faction of MEND was led by General Boyloaf (Victor Ebikabowei) who has since disbanded his unit, which represents the mainstream MEND and joined forces with the renewed efforts to bring peace, stability and development to the Niger Delta”.
The group further called Henry Okah “a monster that was created by frontline Ijaw leader, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari. During his incarceration in 2005-2007, Henry Okah was mandated and paid to service fighting units loyal to Mujahid Dokubo-Asari. He exploited Dokubo-Asari’s absence, cunningly hijacked the e-mail address used by MEND to communicate with the world, sold arms to armed robbers and confiscated hundreds of millions of naira meant for the supply of arms to combat groups in the Niger Delta.
“Since his release from prison by former President Yar’Adua and realising that he had lost clout, Okah sought to work with former armed robbery gangs that he had supplied arms to in the past. These armed groups were responsible for bank robberies and armed attacks on oil companies based in Port Harcourt and its environs.
“Henry Okah is not MEND and MEND is not Henry Okah. We condemn him totally and await further directives on appropriate actions that will be taken on this hardened criminal who successfully infiltrated our ranks to perpetrate heinous crimes. His end has come”, the group vowed.
Meanwhile anger is rising in the Niger Delta against Okah, who is seen by many Niger Deltans as a traitor working for elements opposed to President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential ambition. The Nigerian leader hails from the zone.
During a visit to President Jonathan on Tuesday, ex-militants namely Chief Government Ekpemolo, a.k.a. Tompolo; Ateke Tom; Farah Dagogo; Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari; Shoot at Sight; Busta Rhymes and Egberipapa said the 1 October bombing was condemnable, adding that “it is dastardly, irresponsible and morally reprehensible. We reject such incident and we say that the Niger Delta people are not in support of it.”
“Let it go from here and let it go to the entire world, particularly because we read in the media that it was MEND that carried out the blasts. All the leaders of MEND and all other organi-sations are here and we say that MEND was not responsible for that bomb blasts. Our struggle is a responsible struggle,” they said.
Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Mr Victor Ebika-bowei, also known as Boy-loaf, denied the existence of any MEND member with the name Jomo Gbomo, who allegedly signed the bomb alert statement passed to the media before the blasts.
“Jomo Gbomo does not exist. If the person handling the media sector has a problem and another person takes over, so far, he has the password of the e-mail, he can use the name of Jomo Gbomo and cover up as Jomo Gbomo. So, there is nothing as Jomo Gbomo, he does not exist,” he said.
In South Africa, Okah is facing a two-count charge in connection with the October 1 twin explosions in Abuja, which left 12 people dead and many others injured.

PoliticsFormer Ig Ogbonna Onovo, Handed Over To Hafiz Ringim by jidsoon(op): 2:26pm On Sep 13, 2010
The newly appointed armed forces chiefs and the new Inspector-General of Police resumed in Abuja this morning.

Hafiz-Ringim, New Police IG.
President Goodluck Jonathan had last Wednesday appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim as Inspector-General of Police, Major-General Azubuike Ihejirika as Chief of Army Staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim as Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar as the Chief of Air Staff.

He listed the crises to include the Boko Haram uprising and incidents of kidnapping.
Onovo, however, said he tried his best to contain the situation. The former IGP said his removal is not strange as there have been so many who had occupied the position before him.
He asked for forgiveness from Nigerians and police officers he might have offended in the course of his work.
Hafiz Ringim, the new IGP was yet to make his acceptance speech as at the time of writing this report as he was summoned to Aso Rock Presidential Villa just as he was about to speak.

PoliticsSss Shuts Down Ogun Assembly by jidsoon(op): 1:22pm On Sep 08, 2010
State Security Service, SSS, operatives this morning shut down the Ogun State House of Assembly following yesterday’s kangaroo impeachment by minority members of the House.

•Egbetokun Ogun State Speaker.

Confirming the closure to P.M.NEWS, the state director of SSS revealed that the order came from Abuja that the Assembly premises should be shut to avoid further crisis.

There was pandemonium at the Oke-Mosan premises of the Assembly as some workers were seen running helter-skelter while others were not allowed into the premises by fully armed policemen who had been drafted to the premises.

P.M.NEWS reliably gathered that the G-9 members who reportedly rose from an all-night meeting with Governor Gbenga Daniel this morning had planned to sit this morning to ‘confirm’ their legality, but were prevented from entering the premises.

According to an inside source, “the G-9 members led by Soyemi Coker were with the governor for a nocturnal meeting and had planned to hold a sitting in the House today, but were prevented by the security operatives.”

It was discovered that all the security personnel in the House of Assembly were yesterday, changed by the G-9 to enhance their protection and successful continuation of their meeting this morning, but the closure derailed their plans.

A member of the G-15 who pleaded anonymity told P.M.NEWS on phone that the Hosue of Assembly is still intact, adding that the Speaker, Tunji Egbetokun is still in charge.

“We were expected to seat today under the legal leadership of Hon. Egbetokun, but the director of SSS informed us that there was a directive from Abuja to close down the House.

“We are seriously restrategising on the next line of action. We are not going to court because the illegality is very glaring. People of Ogun State should remain calm and go about their business without fear,” the member stated.

Meanwhile, youths identified as Mafia boys yesterday stormed the Akute, Ogun State residence of Hon. Egbetokun, vandalising the whole building with stones and other weapons. Egbetokun and his family were not, however, at home when they stormed the place.

As a result of the crisis, Governor Gbenga Daniel was reported to have been invited by the presidency over the alleged involvement of his police aide in breaking into the House of Assembly.

The policeman, Ali Baba King with force number 360558 who serves in the governor’s office allegedly led the G-9 members to break into the House of Assembly for the kangaroo impeachment.

Christianity EtcTake Steps, No Matter How Small! by jidsoon(op): 9:00am On Sep 02, 2010
The easiest thing for any man to do is to talk about some beautiful visions and great plans of what he desires to do. Taking steps to actualize those plans is where the real work lies. Proverbs 14:23 says, “In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.”

You can't tell how much you can do until you start doing it. Your capabilities are revealed only when you take steps. So, start taking steps, no matter how small. Anyone who succeeds in taking small steps is automatically qualified for big steps. Unfortunately many people want to take big steps when they have not succeeded in taking small ones. I am not against your dreaming big, but the truth is, no big dream is ever born in a big way, every big dream must first be conceived, be born as a babe, go from crawling to walking, and then start running before it will eventually fly. So, stop complaining about what you don't have, do something with what you have! There is always something you can do, no matter how small!

How do you make your action effectual?

1) You need wisdom. Ecclesiastes 10:10 says, “Wisdom is profitable to direct.” You need to be calculative in your step taking. In your planning, work with the facts available to you. What helped the prodigal son to make his way back home were the following facts: (a) In my father's house, even servants have more than enough food to eat. (b) If I return to my father and ask for forgiveness he will take me back. (3) If he will not accept me back as a son, I will offer to work for him as a hired servant. With that, he took steps and got back his position. Facts will strengthen you to take the steps you need to take.

2) Be bold and courageous. Courage is the final step in the journey of life. That is why God said to Joshua, “Be strong and of a good courage.” What is courage? It is taking steps inspite of your fears. There is no man who doesn't fear. But fear will either intimidate you or bow to you depending on your action. Courage also means taking steps without obvious promise of success in view. If you wait to see or have full assurance of success before you take steps you will die a failure.

3) To make your action effectual, you must be a tireless person; refusing to give up even after several attempts. You must be a man of endurance; going beyond your natural strength, stretching beyond the available resources.

4) As you take steps you must also be sensitive to know when you need to change direction or make changes, but never stop taking steps.

I perceive that you are long overdue for expansion in your business, ministry and other areas of life, but you have been putting barriers around yourself! Now, it's time for action! Stop wasting your destiny! See yourself as a man who is already behind schedule and let that motivate you to take steps!

PoliticsPhcn Workers Go On Nationwide Strike by jidsoon(op): 3:01pm On Aug 25, 2010
Workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), on Wednesday, begin an indefinite industrial action.

The workers are protesting the nonpayment of their monetisation arrears among others. The workers, under the aegis of National Union of Electricity Employees, had on Monday, released a memo instructing all members to lock all the gates to PHCN's offices and installations nationwide.

The workers' strike is coming two days before President Goodluck Jonathan is scheduled to unveil his power generation and distribution blue print. The workers are also protesting the procedure that government plans to adopt in the privatization of power distribution.

Mr Jonathan had, on Monday, approved the sale of 11 power firms, which are subsidiaries of the power company. The government insisted that this move will help to checkmate the high aggregate technical, commercial, and collection losses suffered in the course of electricity generation and distribution in the country.

PoliticsAccident At Police Checkpoint Again by jidsoon(op): 10:55am On Aug 20, 2010
Barely a week after the accident caused by a police checkpoint in which 30 people reportedly lost their lives in Lagos State, SouthWest Nigeria, a police check point has caused another accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near Berger bridge bus stop.

•Scene of the accident at the police checkpoint this morning. PHOTO: OLATUNJI OBASA.

P.M.NEWS learnt that the accident occurred this morning when a truck with registration number XK 6351 SP was stopped by policemen at a checkpoint.

But when the driver was about to stop, he lost control and crushed a Mercedes Benz car with registration number AM 204 KTU and a Police Gateway Response Squad vehicle with registration number FP 5385 OG.

According to report, the Benz car was towed from Ibafo last week to the police checkpoint for repairs.

Some of the residents of the area, who spoke to P.M.NEWS condemned the action of the policemen who they alleged harass both motorists and passengers on the expressway to extort money from them.

It was also gathered that two policemen narrowly escaped death last week at the same checkpoint when a truck lost control and ran into their shed.

As at press time, the truck, Mercedes Benz car and the police vehicle were still at the scene of the accident.

CrimeNigerian Cop Shoots Boss, Then Commits Suicide by jidsoon(op): 1:03pm On Aug 16, 2010
A Nigerian police Sergeant Ibrahim Abdullahi attached to Bebeji Police Division in Kano , North-West Nigeria , Saturday committed suicide by killing himself with his gun, after an aborted attempt to kill his boss.

The Police officer who allegedly stole about 300 US dollars from a shop near the police station did not want to die alone as he shot the Divisional Police Officer, DSP Abdullahi Umar, on the shoulder, believing that his boss had died.

The DPO is being to treated at Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH.

The bullet wounds on the DPO were not severe and he has chances of surviving, Kano Police spokesman, Superintendent of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare who confirmed the story told P.M.News.

“The story was a sad one for the Nigeria Police as it could be best described as a tale of a crime-buster soaking his hands in the rubbish of crime,” a resident of Bebeji who was at the scene of the incident said.

Trouble started when the late Sergeant Abdullahi allegedly notorious for intimidating residents of the area visited a shop owned by one Hajiya Hadiza Yahuza.

P.M.News learnt that the late Police man was in the habit of extorting money from the woman, whose shop is near the station.

According to sources, when he came into the shop, he met the shop keeper, Dauda Buhari, 16, who told him that his Madam was yet to come to the shop.

The teenager who knew Sergeant Abdullahi as a regular visitor to the shop innocently left him inside to attend to a customer who came to buy wares, “but that was to be a costly mistake as the Police man opened the money box and collected the sum of N50, 000,” our source stated.

“By the time he came back from outside, Sergeant Abdullahi excused himself and left; but when Dauda searched the money box, he realized that the sum of N50, 000 was missing.

“Dauda ran after the Sergeant and inquired from him whether he knew anything about the missing money. An argument ensued and the Sergeant tried to intimidate the shop keeper,” our source narrated further.

P.M.News learnt that it was at this time that the DPO who was sitting under a tree near the police station stepped in.

“The DPO invited both of them. After listening to their stories, he ordered the Station officer, Inspector Abdullahi Mohammed to disarm Sergeant Abdullahi and investigate the case.”

The Station Officer carried out the instruction but Sergeant Abdullahi tricked him on the pretence that he was going to urinate, “only for him to sneak into the station and deceived the man in charge of fire arms.

“He told the man at the arms store that the issue had been resolved and the Inspector instructed that his gun should be given to him.

“Dramatically, he stormed out from the station, cocked his gun and fired at the DPO.

“The station became rowdy as officers and people ran helter-skelter. He seized the rowdy situation and shot at himself and he died instantly,” our source narrated.

But it was later to be established that the late Police Sergeant actually stole the money,” our source revealed.

Police has launched full investigation into the case, the Police image-maker stated.

The sergeant is yet to be buried as he would be sentenced and dismissed after the post-humous investigation.

On 12 August, in the same city, another Sergeant of MOPOL 9 shot into a crowd, wounding three.

Politics100 Days In Office: Bakare, Others Slam Jonathan by jidsoon(op): 4:01pm On Aug 13, 2010
Serving Overseer, Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare and several other Nigerians have decried the non-performance in office of President Goodluck Jonathan after 100 days in office.

Pastor Tunde Bakare , serving overseer, Latter Rain Assembly.

The president celebrated his 100 days in office yesterday in Abuja, Nigeria, where he said he had been able to stabilise the naira.

But Nigerians do not see Jonathan as a performer as he had not been able to transform the nation and take it to an enviable height in the comity of nations in the last 100 days.

The consensus among Nigerians is that nothing had changed since he took over the reins of governance.

According to Bakare, while the late President Umaru Yar’Adua was very slow, Jonathan is a ‘threadmill’ president who appears to be perpetually in motion but still at the same point.

He said Jonathan had not made any progress since he took over as substantive president on 5 May after the demise of Yar’Adua.

Mr. Yinka Odumakin, National Publicity Secretary, Afenifere Renewal Group, said in the last 100 days “we have not seen any spark, policy pronouncement or dramatic action to move Nigeria forward from the president. We have seen palpable flashes of profligacy as seen in the N17 billion earmarked to mark the nation’s 50th anniversary and the N21 billion approved for the purchase of jets.

“There is no action seen in any sector of the economy in the last 100 days; we expect the government to do more but nothing has been done and there is no clear cut thinking on the part of the government. I have not seen what Jonathan is doing”

Comrade Debo Adeniran, Founder, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL wrote off the president as a failure, saying that nothing had been achieved so far.

“We have only seen the award of national honours to people of questionable character. The Presidential Advisory Committee put in place by the president has done nothing ever since. There is no improvement in the economy of the nation; there is no access to good working environment and the power sector is not working. We have seen 100 days of rigmarole. He has not met our target,” he lamented.

Adeniran b condemned e whuge x payers’ money earmarked by the president to celebrate the nation’s 50th anniversary, saying it was unnecessary.

Immediate past Convener, United Action for Democracy, UAD, Comrade Biodun Aremu, said Jonathan had not done anything in the last 100 days.

He said the president is busy campaigning for a new tenure.

According to him, there had been mediocrity from the president, adding that the N23 billion earmarked for the presidential jets was a waste.

“He is just toeing the line of the former president,” aremu said.

Human rights activist, Comrade Toyin Raheem was of the opinion that Jonathan had failed the nation as nothing was virtually working in the country.

“Nothing has changed so far. We need a system change in the country. What has he done about corruption and the power sector? They don’t think about the masses. There is nothing to show for the last 100 days,” he stated.

Solicitor, Supreme Court, Mr. Chris Akiri said the time was too short to judge the president, saying that Jonathan needed enough time to perform.

CrimeI Personally Do Not See The Justice In Sentencing To Prison A Man Who Steals By by jidsoon(op): 11:38am On Aug 10, 2010
Goodluck Jonathan Just as I promised on this page on the 31st of July to give political cover to the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission in taking any necessary measure backed by law to cleanse the stock markets, I also extend that same promise to all heads of Federal Government agencies and bodies in charge of maintaining or enforcing Law and Order be it in the civil population, the military/paramilitary, anti corruption bodies or the core civil service. I want you all to know that there will not be any negative consequences to you for doing your job in accordance with the laws of our land. The law must not be a respecter of persons and justice must at all times be seen to have been done. If Nigeria is going to be a place governed by the rule of law we would have to start at the top and work our way to the bottom. I personally do not see the justice in sentencing to prison a man who steals because he is hungry while the man who causes the hunger by misappropriating funds meant to ease society's burden is treated with kids gloves. There must be social justice in Nigeria without which we will not have a level playing ground. We have no choice but to urgently build the Nigeria of our dream for the sake of the present and the generation that is to come. GE
PoliticsComment Of The President Goodluck Jonathan On Facebook by jidsoon(op): 10:16am On Aug 06, 2010
In keeping with my word given on this page and at several public fora where I promised to provide every necessary resource needed by The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free and fair election, I have just forwarded a Supplementary Budget Bill to the National Assembly to cater for the funds requested by The INEC through it's Chairman for the body to perform it's duties. I am deeply committed to equip The INEC bequeath genuinely democratic elections to Nigerians because I know this is possible as there is a precedent for this. If on June 12 1993, Nigeria could conduct credible elections, there is absolutely no reason why we can not conduct an even better election 18 years after. Remember we are only as strong as our weakest link so the key to success is for everyone to do their part. Now the government is doing it's part, and Chairman Jega and the team at The INEC are doing their part and very soon it will be up to you the good citizens of Nigeria to do your own part to make the exercise what we want it to be. Prepare to register and spread the word to your friends and family. Now is not the time to be cynical. The future of Nigeria depends on all of us registering to vote and voting on the appointed date in 2011. I call on both young and old, male and female, Christian and Muslim to remember the words of our National Anthem-Arise o compatriots! Nigeria's call obey-let us do our civic duty and participate in the registration exercise soon to be unveiled by The INEC so that again in the words of our National Anthem-The labour of our heroes past shall NEVER be in vain. PoliticsGovernment Set To Announce New Gas Pricing Regime by jidsoon(op): 1:55pm On Aug 03, 2010
Nigeria will announce a new gas pricing regime this week aimed at boosting power generation for its struggling manufacturing industry, the finance ministry said late on Monday.

The new pricing structure, which has already been approved by President Goodluck Jonathan, is meant to enable manufacturers to access cheaper energy, which currently accounts for around 60 percent of their production costs, the ministry said.

"A major character of the new regime is the sectoral differentiation in pricing, which favours manufacturers," the ministry said in a statement.

Nigeria is home to Africa's biggest oil and gas industry yet is plagued by chronic power shortages, leaving its 140 million people without reliable mains electricity, and businesses and wealthy individuals reliant on expensive diesel generators.

The power crisis is a major brake on growth in sub-Saharan Africa's second-biggest economy.

But it is also a major potential investment opportunity for private power firms, which stand ready to invest billions of dollars in Nigeria once a clear regulatory framework is put in place.

Industry executives say the current gas pricing structure has not provided enough incentive for producers to sell their gas for domestic power generation, even though it is a huge potential market. They hope the new regime will change that.

PoliticsNigeria To Unveil World’s Largest Cake by jidsoon(op): 4:27pm On Aug 02, 2010
Nigeria is expected to make history on October 1, when its caterers build and unveil the world’s largest cake. The 65,000kg cake, will be unveiled at the National Stadium, Abuja, is expected to beat the current Guinness World Records.

By midnight, October 1, a select group of Nigerian caterers and bakers will begin work on a 65ton cake. By noon, the fruit cake, decorated in green and white colours will be unveiled by President Goodluck Jonathan. Mr. Jonathan will cut the 6ft high cake and Nigerians will have the opportunity to have a share of the ‘national cake’ literally.

The cake, which will be 100ft long and 6ft high, will require the services of at least 2000 persons, and is expected to beat the records of the current world’s largest cake, a 58ton cake which was baked in 1989.

One meal one nation

The organiser of the World’s largest cake project, Victor Oluwafemi, says he has tagged the project, ‘one meal one nation’, in line with the philosophy behind the project.

“The project is a private endeavour which myself and my team thought of. We wanted to do something significant for the 50th anniversary project. We wanted something that would give every Nigerian an opportunity to partake in the celebrations. We knew that the average Nigerian would not have the opportunity to eat the cake that will be presented in the villa,” Mr. Oluwafemi said to NEXT in Abuja.

Mr. Oluwafemi’s team of three spoke enthusiastically of the measures that they are taking to ensure that the cake gets to as many Nigerians as possible. First, every state in the country will receive one ton of the cake and the small team also expects that every tribe in the country will be represented in the Abuja Stadium on October 1, and will have the opportunity to have a bite of the cake.

“This project is supposed to turn the national cake that we always talk about to reality. It will give Nigerians an actual cake to feed on,” Paul Sambo, the team’s head of Strategic business said.

Likening the project to the national pride that comes from winning a football match, the team says that the project was designed to boost the emotions of Nigerians despite the current national challenges.

“This project does not gainsay the fact that the nation has problems up till today. But we need inspiration in order to move forward as a nation. This project was designed with a leadership bias, a leader inspires his people no matter what and that is what we hope to do,” Joseph Yakwo, the third member and the operations officer of the project said.

Making the records book

If the team’s cake must to enter the Guinness World Records, Mr. Oluwafemi and his team will have to start and finish the cake within 24 hours; the team plans to do so in 8.

“We are going to bake the cake in about 8 hours. The cake is going to be baked, cooled and iced on the same day,” Mr. Yakwo said.

The team says that it has been in touch with the officials of the Guinness World Records and that a Guinness adjudicator will arrive from New York to inspect the project from start to finish.

PoliticsBrt Operators Increase Fare By 30 Percent by jidsoon(op): 2:34pm On Aug 02, 2010
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) operators on Sunday commenced implementation of the marginal fare increase from Mile 12 to CMS.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) had in a flier in July announced the marginal increase.

A ride in the BRT bus from Mile 12 to Fadeyi and Moshalashi to CMS is now N70 as against the previous fare of N50 while Mile 12 to CMS, which was formerly N100, is now N120.

LAMATA Managing Director, Mr Dayo Mobereola, said the increase was due to increase in running cost.

He added that prices of tyres, spare parts, lubricants and other components had not been static since the commencement of the BRT operations about two years ago.

“The marginal increase to be effected therefore will assist in recovering some cost operations, give members of the commuting public efficient services and ensure system sustainability.

“We want this system to outlive us, hence the need for all of us to contribute our efforts in ensuring that the system is sustainable,” Mobereola said.

He said since inception, BRT had moved 120 million passengers using 220 buses and had created more than 2,000 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs.

NAN reports that BRT commenced operations on March 17, 2008 with 220 buses.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions have greeted the marginal fare increase.

Mr Innocent Edet, a commuter, said that the fare hike was unnecessary because the buses were provided to alleviate the problem of transportation.

“The increase will bring hardship because the other commercial buses will seize the opportunity to double their fares with a corresponding increase by operators,” Edet said.

A civil servant, Mr Christopher Aigbe, said in spite of the increase, the benefit of BRT could not be compared to the hardship if the buses were sent off the road because of the cost of maintenance.
