Politics / Know More About Him Dr Bola Ahmed by jidsoon(m): 2:14pm On Jun 29, 2022
Know more about him Dr Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu the incoming president of Nigeria 203 and what he stand for.

Nationality: Nigerian
Date of Birth: 29th March1952
Birth Place: Lagos State
State of Origin: Lagos State
Marital Status: Married
Spouse: Oluremi Tinubu
No Children: 6
Occupation: Accountant, Politician, Businessman
Political Party: All Progressives Congress (APC)

March 29 1952 was the year this influential personality, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was born. No information regarding his father but his mother, late Abibatu Mogaji was a popular trader in Lagos and she occupied the position of Iyaloja of Lagos State until her death.
Tinubu was raised in the traditional Yoruba way.

Academic Qualification:

He was also not denied the right to western education which he began by attending St. John’s Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos and later Children’s Home School in Ibadan, both in the South-western region of Nigeria.

Travelling abroad to study is a dream for most Nigerian students who believe that the quality and speed of education abroad is better than what is obtainable in the country.

Completing his primary and secondary education, in 1975 Tinubu was privileged to attend Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois, and later transferred to Chicago State University.

His stay in America during his undergraduate studies was not a bed of roses as the young energetic Tinubu had to engage in menial jobs including dishwashing, night-guard and cab-driving to overcome the initial challenges of school.

In the end, Tunubu’s hard work and that of his mother paid off as he graduated with a B.Sc. in Accounting in 1979. Also, he displayed his brilliancy by graduating among the honours student of both colleges he attended. More so, he was awarded the Outstanding Student’s Award, The University Scholar’s Award and the Certificate of Merit in Accounting and Finance.

This goes to show that Tinubu was an excellent student during his schooling days and impressed his fellow students, tutors and even his mother who had laboured so much on him.

About Tinubu’s Family

Ahmed Bola Tinubu is married since 1987 which is over 3 decades to the love of his life Oluremi Tinubu, the incumbent senator of the Lagos Central senatorial district.

Tinubu’s children are 6, according to Answers Africa, they are

Jide,

Seyi,

Shade,

Zainab

Habibat

Olayinka

The first three are from the previous marriage while the rest are from his marriage to Oluremi. All of the children are fully grown and excel in their respective careers. More so, Tinubu is also family to Adewale Tinubu (Nephew), the CEO of Oando.

Days of Humble Beginning

As the saying goes in Nigeria “who no like better thing”, even though Tinubu had completed his degree program, he did not return home but picked up a job in the United States.

He worked with several American companies including Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation.

During his working days at Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells, Tinubu displayed his intellectual prowess putting the knowledge he has gathered over the years in school to practice by participating in the auditing and management consultancy services of several firms such as General Motors, GEC and other Fortune 500 firms, International Harvester, First National Bank of Chicago, Procter and Gamble.

Fast forward to 1983, Tinubu eventually relocated back to Nigeria. Banking on the wealth of experienced he has gathered over time working in the United States, he wasted no time picking up a job with Mobil Oil Nigeria as a senior auditor, and later rose to the executive position of the company.

He worked tirelessly contributing his best quota to ensure the company’s growth. His hard work at the company was highly recognized and rewarded. In the end, he retired from the organization as the company’s treasurer.

The Dawn of a New Career Path

Tinubu is a man who believes in society. He was a visionary man and believed the society he was in at the time can be better than what it was. This propelled him to be involved in community service as a veritable tool for social development.

I believe this is a factor that stimulated him to nurse the idea of running as the governor of the state someday so that he can give more to the state than he was currently doing.

So, Tinubu was actively involved in several political activities including spearheading several financial contributions and fund-raising programmes geared towards community development in Lagos State.

In addition, he led a political action organization known as Primrose Group. The group was known to push for fundamental changes in the politics of Lagos State.

Fast forward to 1992, Tinubu was fully active in Nigerian politics as a founding member of the now-defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) during the regime of Gen Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB).

In the same year, he was elected as an Honourable Senator of the Federal Republic Nigeria to represent Lagos West Senatorial District.

While at the National Assembly, he was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Finance, Appropriation and Currency.

Activities Against June 12 Annulment

During the military government in Nigeria, Tunubu was a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a famous pro-democracy group known to engage the military government.

The regime of IBB had annulled the election which the SDP candidate MKO Abiola had won overwhelmingly.

His political activist activities during the military regime got him in a lot of trouble which led to his arrests and detention, harassment and even persistent life threats to force him to eventually leave the country for his personal safety.
Knowing that Tinubu is a fighter and not a runner, he continued to fight for the progress and the betterment of the country while abroad through NADECO.

As the 12th Governor of LagosEven though he relocated abroad, Tinubu’s heart remained in Nigeria and his passion to contribute his quota to the nation’s growth, he eventually returned to the country in 1998 after the death of Sani Abacha, the military dictator who had locked up MKO Abiola.

As soon as he returned, he joined the National Reconciliation and Development.

Ahead of 1999, Tinubu was a founding member of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD) and he was voted as governor of Lagos state, ruling from 1999 till 2007. He was in charge for eight years from 1999 to 2007.

During his eight-year tenure in office as governor of Lagos state, he invested largely in the education sector in the state.

In addition to some of his projects is new road construction which is aimed at meeting the needs of the fast-growing population of the state.

However, he faced some challenges during his tenure notably with the federal government led by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo because he created new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to meet the needs of the state’s large and growing population.

The ruckus caused the Federal government to seize the funds meant for local councils in the state. Obasanjo’s plan was to ground the management of the state, but Tinubu was able to look for other sources of revenue to manage the affairs of the most populated Nigerian state.

Also, he was engaged in constant clashes with governors and other influential personalities of the People Democratic Party (PDP) which was back then the largest and strongest political party in the country.

Politics / Let's Learn To Ask Ourselves Some Questions. by jidsoon(m): 8:57am On Nov 13, 2018
Let's learn to ask ourselves some questions.

1. Why were pensioners of Nitel weren't paid in 16 years of pdp ?

2. Why couldn't the pdp complete the Lagos/ibadan dualisation in 16 years

3. Why couldn't the pdp complete Lagos/Abeokuta expressway in 16 years?

4. Why did the pdp only left power generation at 3000 MW of electricity in 16 years?

5. Why couldn't the pdp start and complete the Lagos/ ibadan railway project in 16 years?

6. Why couldn't the pdp finish the Lagos airport project in 16 years?

7. Why couldn't the pdp complete the PH International Airport in 16 years?

8 why couldn't the pdp complete their National secretariat despite having almost three times the the construction cost.

9. Why did Dasuki single handedly had $2.8 billion for arms purchases ?

10. Why was $4million found in Pastor Oritsajefor's jet?

11. How on earth could Deziani get so much wealth and properties under GEJ ?

12. Why was Bishop Oyedepo granted free parking for 2 or more jets under GEJ but he's now forced to sell some because he's now paying correct parking fees?

13. Why was oil bloc renewal was automatic under pdp but is not under apc?

14. Why should we have 12 cars in a house under pdp and some have sold off most now under apc ( reason being that we are wasteful as a nation hence PMB is mopping up free money and the rich are also crying)

15. Why is visiting Aso Rock under GEJ could fetch visitors $10,000 but under PMB fetches nothing

16. Why do politicians get import waivers from customs but now such waivers are no longer available (reason why the Senate had issues with the Custom Controller General at the inception of the administration)

17. Why does the FG under pdp sponsored pilgrims to holy land but the same is no longer applicable under apc ( knowing full well that pilgrimage is not a business of the FG)

Dear readers, I am not saying PMB is perfect however he is bringing Nigeria back to sanity and moving us from living above our means.

No nation can grow by looting the treasury but by getting up and be involved in the real sector of the economy. The era of free money is gone now is the era of innovative entrepreneurship.

"2019 Presidential election is fast approaching, the enemies of this nation are uniting, they are planning to come back to power and hold this country unto ransom once again.

- The media are angry, why? There is no more free money from the government.

- The Ex generals are murmuring, Why? There is no sign President Buhari will renew their oil blocks contract.

- Socio-cultural groups are grumbling, Why? No more Ghana must go bags of money to support Buhari.

- The Royal Fathers are shouting, Why? Buhari did not pay homage with cars and cash gifts.

- The Legislators are not cooperating, Why? No more budget padding and bribes before passing of budgets.

- Corrupt Religious leaders are lamenting, Why? No more shady arms contracts.

- Corrupt Civil Servants are not supportive, Why? No more corrupt practices, BVN and TSA have exposed their sharp practices.

- The spoilt kids are bitter, Why? PMB has made people to understand that their parents are not that rich.

Having realized the set of people that want to set this country ablaze because of their controversial ways of living, I pray that The Almighty God should help President Muhammadu Buhari overcome all these obstacles and take Nigeria to the promised land

Politics / Suspect Dies In Custody & Is Buried Without Family Consent by jidsoon(m): 3:20pm On Sep 19, 2013
A 40-year-old man, Toyese Kehinde, who allegedly died in the cells of Benin Central Prisons in the early hours of 9 September, 2013, was buried by authorities of the prisons authorities without the consent of his family members.

Kehinde, a musician and father of six children, was sentenced to two weeks imprisonment following his failure to pay the N5,000 fine option granted him by Egor Magistrate’s Court 1, in Benin City, southern Nigeria, over environmental Offense.

The family allegedly got to know about his fate through a friend of the late Kehinde who informed them of his arrest and imprisonment.

Following his failure to show up at home at the expiration of his jail term, his brother, Adewale Kehinde, and another friend approached the Prisons authority to demand for the release of their son, only to be told that the convict had died and had been buried.

“We saw him last on the Friday of the environmental day. We later heard that he was arrested for flouting environmental restrictions and was sentenced to two weeks imprisonment as he was unable to pay the option of N5000 fine.

“When he failed to return after two days, we went to the prisons, only to be told that he died on 9 September and was buried. The man who spoke to us gave us a paper that he died.”

Adewale said it was disturbing that his brother died in the custody of the prisons officials and was buried without them telling the family members, even though there was a contact name and address given by the late Toyese while in their custody.

A note under the subject, “Death of Convict No. V. 1176 Toyese Kehinde in Charge No. ELG/004/13,” signed by Asst. Supt. of Prisons II (Admin) for the Deputy Controller or Prisons, a copy of which was made available to the family of the deceased, alleged that he died after a protracted illness, an allegation refuted by the deceased’s brother who said he was hale and hearty before his arrest and conviction.

The note which was copied to the Controller-General of Prisons, Abuja and others, read as follows: “I am directed to inform you of the death of the above-named convicted prisoner. He died in the early hours of 9th September, 2013 after a protracted illness.

“He was sentenced to two weeks imprisonment or N5000.00 fine on the 31st August, 2013 by Egor Magistrate’s Court 1, Benin City for failing to observe sanitation exercise.

“It would be appreciated if you could conduct an inquest and forward the proceedings to this office for onward transition to the Controller-General of Prisons Service, Abuja please.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of Edo State Prisons Headquarters, Suleman Aminu, claimed he has no knowledge of the death of the convict.

“I don’t want to say anything categorically now whether the family members of the convict was informed or not. I have not been fully briefed. I will have to crave your indulgence to give me some time to consult with the Controller to enable us carry out investigations as to why a death occurred in one of our prisons and the victim was buried and we did not know,” Aminu said.

Politics / WARNING: Poor People Are Not Wanted In Lagos Megacity by jidsoon(m): 10:59am On Sep 17, 2013
Under the able leadership of Governor Babatunde Fashola, the apostle of good governance, Lagos is undergoing a major makeover. Lagos is now going to be a megacity!

The Atlantic Ocean will be banished, to be replaced by Eko Atlantic; a shimmering new 3.5- mile island built literally on the water behind a "great wall of Lagos." Greenery has suddenly appeared in Lagos, displacing the concrete jungle. There are now parks with manicured lawns. There are now tree-lined roads. Pot-holes are now being tarred. Sidewalks are now provided for pedestrians.

*Eko o ni baje In the middle of this transformation, a new immigration department has been opened in Lagos. "Illegal aliens" are being expelled and are shipped back to their homelands in the dead of night. New visitors may have to obtain visas to come here.

All this makes it imperative to determine who exactly is the Lagosian? Who is entitled to enjoy the new amenities that Governor Fashola and his team of dedicated public-servants are bringing to Lagos? Accordingly, a battle royal has emerged for the rightful ownership of Lagos. Some are insisting Lagos is no man's land.

Others are discovering Lagos as their fatherland. But there is no question that the government has already determined the precise identity of the true Lagosian.

As far as the Lagos State Government is concerned, the true Lagosian is not the Yoruba man or the Igbo man. Neither is he the Hausa man or the Fulani man. The true Lagosian is the rich man. The poor have been served quit notice. They are no longer wanted in Lagos. Fashola's resounding slogan is "Eko o ni baje," which means Lagos will not go to the dogs. The poor are considered the dogs of Lagos. In that troublesome capacity, they can have no place in Lagos, if Lagos is to become the megacity of Governor Fashola's lofty dreams!

*Action Governor: For some strange reason, Lagos has tended to have better Governors than most states of the federation. But if you were to ask me who is the best among all the Governors of Lagos, I would answer you without hesitation. In my opinion, it is Governor Babatunde Fashola. Fashola is a man with a vision. He is a man with a purpose. He is a man clearly able to translate ideas into weapons. He has transformed and is transforming Lagos right before our very eyes.

But I have a nagging suspicion that the reason why I am so readily persuaded by Fashola's virtues might not be unconnected with the fact that I am not a poor man. The poor themselves may have a very different point of view. They are probably likely to insist that the best governor in the history of Lagos is Lateef Kayode Jakande; alias "Baba Kekere."

I am not a poor man by Nigerian standards. Therefore, I do not presume to speak for the poor. But then, increasingly, I am beginning to wonder who exactly speaks for them in Lagos. One thing is certain, Fashola speaks primarily for the rich; and this is not good enough. In the Lagos of today, the poor have no voice. Fashola's laudable policies are too one-sided. They are tailor-made for the rich: and are grossly disadvantageous to the poor.

*Relocating the poor: I don't have to be poor to know that the poor are increasingly unwelcome in Lagos. The genius of Fashola is to relocate them to the outskirts of the city. If they are non-indigenes, they are relocated back to their homesteads. The systematic ridding of Lagos of the poor is a longstanding process. The poor were shipped out of Maroko. It has been replaced by Oniru where apartments go for an average of 2.5 million naira a year.

Slums in Mushin, Oluwole and Makoko have been demolished. The residents were evicted from their homes, with no talk of rehabilitation. Markets in Tejuoso, Yaba and Oshodi have been demolished and rebuilt. The new stalls are beyond the pocket of the earlier poor occupants. Everywhere in Lagos, the poor are becoming persona non grata.

In places like Ojota, Makoko, and Ijora-Badia East, the poor residents have been evicted from their homes. In some cases, they were given only 72 hours notice to leave. In Makoko/Iwaya, the government's quit notice described them "environmental nuisances" that "undermined the megacity status" of Lagos. It stated that their menial existence was detrimental to the government's determination to beautify the Lagos waterfront.

*Eko Atlantic: As the poor are being squeezed out, so is more leg-room being created for the rich. The Eko Atlantic project is the epitome of this. It involves dredging 140 million tons of sand from the floor of the Atlantic Ocean to subdue the sea and create nine million square kilometers of prime real estate, protected by an eight metre-high wall, vaunted to last 1000 years. When completed, the project will boast residential areas, offices, shops, and leisure facilities for 250,000 people, with another 150,000 commuting to work. To have a foothold in this brave new world, you will need a cool 300,000 naira for just one square metre of land.

However, what Lagos desperately needs is not a "Manhattan island" that will cater primarily for the rich.

Massive low cost housing

What Lagos needs is massive low-cost housing to accommodate millions of slum-dwellers. The state government itself acknowledges that Lagos has a housing shortage in excess of five million. By its own estimates, it needs an annual growth of at least 200,000 houses to keep up with the population growth. In spite of this, it touts a six billion-dollar white-elephant project that ignores this urgent need of the poor masses in favour of one that caters to the rich few.

*Ban of Okadas: I hate okadas. They are a menace on the streets. Even the sidewalks are not safe from them. Okada riders are a law unto themselves. They obey no traffic rules. They imperil their clients by taking dangerous risks. The mortuaries and hospitals are filled with those who have lost life and limb because of their recklessness. But I will be the first to admit that one of the reasons I am able to hate okadas with so much passion is because I have a car. I don't have to take okadas and have never ever taken them.

Governor Fashola also has a car. So it does not surprise me that, like me, he is also fed up with the menace of okadas in Lagos. Therefore, recently an edict was passed banning them in most areas of Lagos. The government refused to provide alternative means of transportation for those who don't have cars before banning the okadas. This oversight translates into contempt for the poor. I don't have to be poor to recognise that it has been disastrous.

Since the banning of the okadas, I have repented of my earlier hatred of okadas. No matter that I wind up my tinted windows; the better to enjoy the air-conditioning in my car, I cannot remain oblivious to the mass of humanity in Lagos now constrained to walk for miles or stand for hours at bus-stops, waiting in readiness for the battle ahead when it will become necessary to fight for the few spaces available in the few buses when they finally, finally, arrive.

Let's face it; with the okadas gone, the poor in Lagos don't get home until midnight and then they have to set out for work by 5 a.m.; and that is if they have a job. I asked a lady in my neighbourhood supermarket how much she makes as a cashier. She told me N20,000 a month. I don't know how anybody can survive in Fashola's Lagos with such a salary, especially since over 50 per cent of that goes for transportation alone.

*Paying tolls: The new departure in Fashola's Lagos is that people now have to pay for driving on tarred roads. If you are one of the poor residents of Ajah, Badore, Elegushi, Ajiran, Sangotedo, Abijo, Ibeju, and other communities in Eti-osa, Epe and Ibeju-Lekki local government areas, you will now have to pay tolls for leaving your house to head for the Lagos mainland and pay again for going back home. On the Lekki expressway, no less than three tolls are envisaged for just a 50- kilometre stretch of road.

The Lagos State Government is only interested in exploiting the poor in this area, and there are literally millions living there. There is little or no government infrastructure there. There is no general hospital, and no low-income housing scheme. No sporting or recreational facility. No public transportation system. No public water works: just the payment of tolls. The original idea was to develop a coastal road as an alternative route to the tolled road, but this has not been done.

*No petty-trading: So how can the poor make ends meet in Lagos? With okada gone, and excluding outright crime, one option is petty-trading Lagos-style.

*Street trading

This entails turning the streets into one big supermarket, and training for the 2016 Olympics by running after cars in order to sell something as menial as groundnuts. But even here, you are likely to be confronted by the long arm of the law. Street-trading is frowned at in Lagos. The "Kick Against Indiscipline" brigade will seize your goods if they get hold of you.

The Arab Spring outburst in Tunisia started because the goods of a poor street-trader, Mohamed Bouaziz, were confiscated by the police. That act brought the man to the end of his rope. He bought a jerry-can of petrol and set himself on fire. Those sympathetic to his plight took to the streets, and the upshot of this was the overthrow of the government.

Lagos, Nigeria may not be Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia. Nevertheless, Governor Fashola has a legacy to protect. Rather than this new policy of banishing the poor to Siberia, Fashola should sit down and fashion comprehensive policies that take into consideration their acute suffering in Lagos. If he does not, his disregard of the poor will soon overshadow his remarkable achievements in Lagos State.

Politics / Lawyer Sues FRSC Over New Driver’s Licence by jidsoon(m): 4:55pm On Sep 11, 2013
A lawyer with a Lagos-based legal firm, Tope Alabi and Co, located on 77B, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos, western Nigeria, has dragged the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, to court over the new driver’s licence and number plate introduced by the Federal Government.

Joined in the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos on 9 September are the National Assembly and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Justice Alooma Mukhtar.

According to the motion on notice and motion ex-parte made available to P.M.NEWS by the lawyer, Tope Alabi, the court is to determine whether the National Assembly, as the first defendant, has power to legislate on the production and issuance of driver’s licence and number plate under section 4 of the 1999Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

Also, the court is to determine whether the provisions of the FRSC Act that empower it to produce and issue number plate and driver’s licence are not inconsistent with the provision of section 4 of the Constitution; and whether the defendants along with their agents, servants or privies are right in directing the registered vehicle owners including the plaintiff to re-register when the existing registration is valid and subsisting.

The plaintiff also wants the court to determine whether the defendants along with their agents, servants or privies are right in directing the holders of valid driver’s licences and number plates, including the plaintiff, to renew same when the existing driver’s licences have not expired.

Among the reliefs claimed by the plaintiff are: A declaration that the defendant, the FRSC, lacks the powers to legislate on the issuance of number plate and driver’s licence under section 4 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2011; a declaration that by virue of the provisions of section 4 and 5 of the 2011 constitution of Nigeria, the production and issuance of number plate and driver’s licence is a residual matter within the exclusive legislative and executive competence of the states.

The plaintiff are also seeking a declaration that the defendants whether by themselves, agents or privies whatsoever or howsover described lack the powers in cracking down on those still using the existing registered number plates on their registered vehicles; and an order of perpectual injuction restraining the defendants whether by themselves, agents or privies whatsoever or howsover described from cracking down on those still using valid driver’s licences pending the time within which same will expire and due for renewal.

While speaking with our reporter, Alabi said FRSC’s claim that one of the reasons for the introduction of a new number plate and driver’s licence is because the old number plate and driver’s licence are easily forged is baseless.

The plaintiff opined that some fraudsters were caught recently with a large number of the fake new number plates and driver’s licence.

Politics / Molue Banned From Lagos Island by jidsoon(m): 5:32pm On Sep 05, 2013
The Lagos State Government has banned commuter buses, popularly known as Molue, from plying routes on Lagos Island, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

The government says no Molue bus should cross any bridge linking the mainland with the Island, such as Third Mainland, Eko and Carter bridges, as they could no longer operate in the Central Business District, CBD.

The state government said the decision was taken in its determination to ensure adequate monitoring of commuter bus operators as reagrds compliance with traffic rules and regulations.

The General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Engr. Babatunde Edu, at a stakeholder’s meeting with the Branch Chairmen of the Lagos Urban Bus Owners Association of Nigeria, LUBON, the operators of Molue buses in the state on Wednesday in Oshodi, said the new directive came into effect since 19 August, 2013.

“Though the Lagos State Government was supposed to have commenced enforcement last month, being a responsive and responsible government which believes in enlightenment before enforcement, we therefore decided to shift the enforcement to 4th of this month,” he said.

Edu stated that LASTMA has been mandated to ensure strict compliance with the ban and impound any bus that flouts the ban after 4 September.

The General Manager further said that Molue buses could ply roads in any other part of the state aside the restricted areas, reiterating that government has not banned the buses outright.

He said the buses are restricted to areas like Orile, Iyana Ipaja, Mile 2, Mile 12 among others and urged operators to voluntarily comply with the new directive.

While taking the operators through the prohibited routes, which include Iddo, Ebute Ero, Apongbon, Obalende, Idumota, CMS, among others, Edu appealed for cooperation and support of all the stakeholders.

Responding, the leader of the team, Engr. Taofeek Adesina commended the government for its effort to restore sanity and order in the state and therefore pledged the readiness of his union to lend its support.

Politics / President Jonathan Is Too Weak, A Total Disappointment" by jidsoon(m): 3:08pm On Sep 05, 2013
The President of the defunct Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahedeen Asari- Dokubo, once again took a swipe at President Goodluck Jonathan, stating that the Nigerian leader is a disappointment to the Ijaw ethnic nationality.

Asari-Dokubo said Jonathan is weak and unassertive as a leader.

The ex-militant commander, who was reacting to the latest crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which has led to the factionalisation of the ruling party, lamented that Jonathan could not take bold and courageous steps to tame the dissidents.

Asari-Dokubo, who spoke in a telephone interview with our correspondent, regretted that Jonathan could not act like a typical Ijaw man, who is famous for boldness and exceptional courage.

He asked the President to be guided by an Ijaw famous saying, "Ama Doko Doko Biokpo," which he interpreted to mean "small, small towns but they are very courageous and keep hope alive."

Asari-Dokubo said he was unimpressed by "what he called poor response" to the crisis rocking the PDP by the Presidency and advised Jonathan to emulate former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who confronted and dealt with the dissidents in the party during his tenure.

He recalled how Obasanjo allegedly wielded power to quench the insurgency led by a former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, within the PDP, against his re-election in 2003.

To this end, he asked Jonathan to stop further peace talks and negotiation with the dissident governors and their collaborators, including Obasanjo and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

He said Jonathan only needed to sit up and demonstrate uncommon courage to subdue his political enemies, adding that the crisis was orchestrated to frustrate his second term ambition.

{read_more}

Asari-Dokubo decried the recent statement credited to Abubakar Gumi that the killings in the North would stop as soon as Jonathan renounced his second term bid, adding that the cleric and his co-travellers were cashing in on the weakness of the President.

He nonetheless expressed the conviction that the plot against Jonathan would fail.

He said: "Jonathan is disgracing the Ijaw people and people of the South-South by negotiating with these dissidents. I am terribly annoyed by the way he is handling this issue, he is a disgrace. If he cannot withstand them he should tell us because there is no basis for negotiation.

"This is the time for Jonathan to act like an Ijaw man and he should stop disgracing us.

"Jonathan should hit them and he should tell us if he cannot hit them so that we can help him to hit them mercilessly. I have the potential to hit them hard. It is on record that I once held Nigeria hostage and Nigeria could not produce oil for 48 hours and my activities forced the prices of crude oil globally to rise by $30 one day. It was unprecedented and I can repeat it.

"The plot against Jonathan will surely fail but the President should be decisive with these people once and for all. Jonathan should assert himself as President and put these people where they should be. Obasanjo, who is leading these people did two terms and he plotted a third term.

"There should be no negotiation with dissidents. It should be total war, no retreat, no surrender and let us see who will run first. There is time for peace and there is time for war. This is the time to go into war.

"Jonathan should know that this is the time for war and if he cannot sustain the war, we will help him to sustain it. How many governors attempted to frustrate Obasanjo? Ibori and others were united behind Atiku Abubakar to frustrate Obasanjo and they failed because Obasanjo was strong, assertive, decisive and courageous.

"Jonathan should be strong to deal with them but whether he is strong or not, we are ready to support and stand by him. It is not a one-man battle but a total war and they must be totally vanquished."

Besides, Asari-Dokubo asked Jonathan to hand over the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, to the ex-fighters in the Niger Delta for a decisive action.

On Amaechi, he said, "Let the security men step aside and let us see how Amaechi can come to Rivers State. Amaechi should not be protected because he has betrayed the collective interest of the Niger Delta.

"Jonathan should be decisive and look at the other way and allow us to stand on the streets for 24 hours and we will see whether this madness by Amaechi will not end.

The Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo has appealed to those involved in vandalism to desist from such acts or face appropriate sanctions.

Mr Nebo who spoke at the ministerial platform in Abuja said the activities of vandals has served as a setback towards the provision of steady power supply to the affected areas.

While stressing that power supply in the country has improved to 16 hours per day, the minister said that the federal government will focus on the expansion of renewable energy and also fast track its plan of rural electrification.

He highlighted the growing havoc vandals are doing to prevent a realisation of the power reforms agenda of the administration. He said the incidence of vandalism of electricity equipment has gotten to that level that except drastic action is taken to contain the menace, the much-touted reform of the power sector may be no more than a dream unrealised.

The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company in recent times has claimed to have lost many distribution transformer substations under its network to these vandals. The increasing rate at which its equipment were being vandalised had reached unacceptable proportions.

Unfortunately, this is a common trend across the country as managers of the DISCOs make strenuous efforts to cope with equipment vandalism which indeed has become the major obstacle facing the company in the South-East geo-political zone.

While speaking with the House of Representatives Committee on Power, the Chief Executive Officer of the PHCN, Enugu Distribution Station, Suleman Yahaya said 33 out of 37 transformers belonging to the PHCN were stolen by vandals in Abia State, particularly in Arochukwu, Ohafia and Abiriba areas during the committee’s sightseeing as their oversight functions.

Mr Yahaya went further to inform the committee that sometimes, in a day; PHCN loses up to 20 transformers to these criminal elements.

The immediate consequence of these acts of vandalism is that life is made more difficult for law abiding citizens who are thrown into darkness due to erratic power supply occasioned by the activities of the vandals.

The nation’s economy is seriously threatened as industries are being shut down and employees laid off because companies cannot meet production target as many operate below their installed capacity.

Politics / Lagos, Ogun, Ondo To Experience Power-Cut For 72hrs by jidsoon(m): 7:55am On Apr 04, 2013
Beginning Friday, residents of Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states are to experience a 72-hour power cut, which would last till Sunday, April 7, as a result of additional gas supply to the Chevron Escravos Gas plants. The power supply cut was announced by Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Power (PTFP), Mr. Beks Dagogo Jack, in a statement made available to Daily Sun, in Abuja, yesterday.

The Chevron Escravos Gas plant supplies gas for power generation in Egbin Power Plant, Lagos, Omotosho Power Plants 1 & 2 in Ondo State and Olorunsogo Power Plant in Ogun State. A copy of the Daily Operational Report of power generation for Monday April 1, 2013 exclusively obtained by Daily Sun indicated that Egbin which has installed available capacity of 1100mw generated 920mw, while Omotosho with installed available capacity of 126mw generated 114mw and Olorunsogo with installed capacity of 126mw generated 114mw.

However, Dagogo Jack maintained that the outage will take about 800 megawatts out of available supply during the three day period and will be inclusive of the Shell Afam VI scheduled maintenance which contributes about 200 megawatts to the power shortfall. “The PTFP is coordinating with the relevant project owners to further mitigate the effect of the expected power shortfall. The scheduled maintenance operations of this nature are normal in ensuring that power supply is sustained in the long term.”

The statement quoted Dagogo-Jack further as saying that, the maintenance exercise can be likened to the periodic servicing of a vehicle in order to get the desired level of service reliability, stating that basic machines such as cars must be maintained at determined intervals to ensure optimal power plants efficiency. The chairman also stated that the benefits of this culture of disciplined maintenance far outweigh the cost of a two to three day inconvenience reduced supply, promising that the increased generation alongside future planned maintenance would have minimal impact on supply.

Dagogo-Jack, however, prayed for the support and understanding of Nigerians during this unavoidable period of power cut, while assuring the public that in spite of the daunting challenges on the way, government’s determination to transform the power sector remains a top priority. The chairman said PTEF is coordinating with Chevron, Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), a subsidiary of NNPC alongside the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to ensure that the scheduled gas outage at the Chevron Escravos Gas plant from April 5–7, 2013 will be executed with minimal disruption to the supply of electricity in the country.

The outage, according to him is scheduled for the tie in of additional gas supply from the plant. He assured further that as part of the mitigating plan, transmission line maintenance in the Lagos area will also be conducted in tandem to avoid sequential outages.

Foreign Affairs / Girl Who Performed At Obama's Inauguration Shot Dead In Chicago by jidsoon(m): 6:25pm On Jan 30, 2013
A 15-year-old girl who performed at President Obama's inauguration last week was shot dead Tuesday while hanging out with friends in bullet-scarred Chicago.

Hadiya Pendleton was standing under a canopy in Vivian Gordon Harsh Park when a gunman ran down an alley, opened fire at the group and fled in a white car, police said.

Pendleton was shot in the back but managed to run about a block before she collapsed, officer Laura Kubiak said. She died at the hospital.

A 16-year-old boy was wounded in the 2:20 p.m. incident. Police said Pendleton, who had no criminal record, was probably not the intended target.

Friends of the young majorette described her as a bubbly, well-liked student.

“She was always smiling and laughing,” said Tyler Genovesi, 14. “She was just a really nice person. … There’s a lot of people crying in school today. It’s very sad. The band is playing for her right now.”

On Twitter, Pendleton’s schoolmates were decrying the loss of innocent life.

“You are more than loved and missed,” one wrote. “Your laugh smile and silly happy personality has made my day more times than I can remember. Nobody deserves this, especially not you.”

The shooting happened in an upscale neighborhood where residents were shocked.

"I was torn apart," said Robin Hollis, who lives across the street from the park. "I cried when I heard about it."

Pendleton's murder was one of three shooting deaths in the city on Tuesday. More than 40 people have been shot dead in Chicago since the beginning of the year. The city leads the nation in guns seized by police.

Politics / Bakare Attacks Lagos Over N72m Land Charge by jidsoon(m): 4:08pm On Jan 17, 2013
Founder, Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare has attacked Nigeria’s Lagos State Government for collecting N72 million from him for change of ownership of a parcel of land he bought from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN.

Bakare, who spoke in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, said he bought the parcel of land from PHCN to build a residential estate to make more people own their houses, saying he was shocked when the state government asked him to pay N72 million.

He said after paying the money, the government was yet to release documents of the transaction to him.

The preacher stated that such money was unnecessary as he had already paid for the land and that this was one of the evils brought about by the Land Use Act, LUA, which he said should be repealed.

“The Land Use Act is the enemy of progress in our country. Due to greed for land, they imposed it in our constitution and they are smiling to the bank every day. Citizens are not having access to land or they will pay through their nose.

“Even the Certificate of Ownership, whatever Lagos State Government calls it, it happened to me as a person. I bought a land from PHCN to develop real estate because Lagos State cried out that more houses and needed for people.

“After getting the C of O from PHCN, Lagos State says I have to obtain their documents and charged me N72 million extra on that parcel of land. Then you now enact a useless law asking that in a democracy, a tenant must pay one year rent maximum,” he said.

According to Bakare, “so, if I go to the bank to borrow for 23 percent and I had to pay back the money either through sale or rent, how do I realise it? You can see that nothing here seems to have value. We make laws without considering the needs of the people.”

Bakare said laws were being formulated in the country without having the interest of the masses in mind.

“Not all government laws are bad, Nigerians must rise to take their destiny in their own hand, reject an oppressive government, reject the 1999 constitution, if not this constitution will kill the nation,” he added.

Bakare also said it’s unfortunate that the nation has inept leadership, adding that “we have people who are promoted beyond their mental capacity operating in corridors of power. So, the worst of us are presiding over the best of us. It is shame on our nation.”
