Please I need info on German language course visa.

I want to take a language course for 3-4months. I am also going with my 3 years old son. I am confused on which class of visa to apply for me and for him.

We were supposed to go on a vacation this end of year, but since I have applied for a PhD in Germany already, I felt it would be better not to waste funds on enjoyment holiday alone, so I want to go learn and get at least a B1 instead while sightseeing so that by the time I return, I will go for the student visa interview more confidently.

Please do I do the scheghen visa? What is the application process and how long does it take?
