The cucumber is a creeping vine whose fruits are also called cucumber; it’s the fruits that we are concerned with here. Most of us are familiar with this green fruit; it is cylindrical in shape, approximately 6 to 9 inches long. The skin of the cucumber closely resembles that of the watermelon and ranges from green to white; the inside is very juicy and has a pale green colour with an almost watery flavour taste as more than 90% of it is made up of water.
One wonderful thing about the cucumber is that it can be eaten raw as a fruit just like the watermelon or as a vegetable, either way the cucumber is very beneficial to the human system.

Most of us eat the cucumber without knowing how it benefits our body system while some maybe because they are not aware of the benefits they can derive from the cucumber don’t fancy eating it. After going through this benefits am sure you might want to include this wonderful fruit in your food intake. The benefits that this fruit offers extend even outside of the human system. Below are some of the benefits we derive from each bite of the cucumber.

Weight control
Most people want to lose weight so they cut down on their food intake. Although some of these foods may be little in quantity, the calories they contain are high, thus they starve themselves and at same time end up giving the body enough calories to store as fat. Cucumber on the other hand is less in calories; a cup of cucumber juice contains just 16 calories. In addition to the low calories cucumber has soluble fibres which can dissolve in the gut delaying digestion and giving you the feeling of fullness.

Antioxidant effects
The cucumber can help slow down the rate at which we get older. It contains antioxidants like β-carotenes, α-carotenes, vitamin c, vitamin A as well as many other antioxidants. These antioxidants scavenge the Oxygen-derived free radicals as well as the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which play a role in the ageing process thus slowing down the ageing process.

Nutritional benefits
The cucumber contains lots of vitamins and other nutrients. Click here to get the full nutritional contents of the cucumber.

Inflammation
Cucumber extracts have the ability to inhibit the enzyme Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) which is responsible for production of prostaglandins which foster inflammation. Thus cucumber has anti-inflammatory effects.

Puffy eyes
The next time you wake up with puffy or swollen eyes maybe due to fluid retention or probably crying yourself to sleep, all you need to do is to lie down and cut 2 slices of cucumber and place them on your eyes for about 10 minutes.

Cure for Diabetes
Cucumber contains a very little amount of sugar and can be eaten even by diabetic patients. It also contains a substance needed by the pancreas to produce insulin which helps to lower the amount of sugar in the blood.

Rehydration
Next time when you’re dehydrated and can’t seem to find water nearby, just take a bite of cucumber. More than 90% of the cucumber is made up of water which can serve to rehydrate your system.

Anticancer effects
Cucumber contains cucurbitacin which has anti-cancer effects and also lignans which may also help to lower the chances of developing cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer as well as prostate cancer.

Hair nails and skin care
Cucumber contains silicon and sulphur which promotes hair growth. The silicon also helps to make the nails stronger. The high content of vitamin C and other antioxidants makes the cucumber an ingredient for beauty creams used in treatment of eczema and acne etc.

Relief for heartburn and sunburn
Cucumber can serve as a relief for heartburns when eaten, when used on the skin it can relieve sunburn.

There are many other enormous benefits that you can get from eating the wonderful cucumber fruit which I have not included here and I hope I've given you reasons to include the cucumber fruit in your diet.

Health8 Reasons Why Sugar Is Not Food For You. by joeterri(op): 9:35am On Oct 16, 2014
I will like to give you 8 reasons why sugar is bad for your health. No doubt we all enjoy taking sweet things like candy, soft drinks, wedding and birthday cakes, sweet tea and lots of other sweet things. Sugar, mainly sucrose is used to sweeten most of these items.
When I say sugar in this context I don’t mean carbohydrates in general but sucrose in particular. Chemically sucrose is a disaccharide made up of Glucose and Fructose subunits joined by a glycosidic bond. Sucrose is extracted from sugarcane or sugar beets which are grown as a root crop. This sucrose is refined to give the table sugar which we use in our coffee and tea, the icing which we use in cakes; it is also used to sweeten some of the beverages, soft drinks and candy that we take. The refined sucrose has some other elements such as trace metals,
vitamins and calories. The average person consumes about 24kg of sugar a year (33.1kg in industrialized countries) which is equivalent to about 260 food calories per day. These excess calories contributed by
refined sugar are converted into fats and stored in adipose tissues. Over time this has a negative impact on the human system as a whole, so the next time you walk into a place and you order for a bottle of soft drink you should be sure of the consequences of your action.
According to Sir Isaac Newton’s third law of motion, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, thus we should have it at the back of our minds while drinking down that bottle of coca cola that there is an opposite reaction which in this case can be any of the following conditions which are caused by the intake of these sucrose sweetened items;

v Obesity: When sugary foods are taken they don't supply healthy amounts of protein or fiber, which means they don't fill you up and satisfy your hunger. This makes it more likely that you'll overeat, increasing your overall calorie intake and leading to weight gain. Each tea spoonful of sugar contains about 15 calories of sugar, averagely each person consumes about 260 food calories worth of sugar daily. These calories are besides those obtained from food and are converted to fats and stored in adipose
tissues and this can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

v Immunosuppressant: Whenever you take a sugar rich item like a candy bar or a bottle of Coca cola, it suppresses or lowers your immunity and the effect can last for hours, imagine how long the effect will last when you drink that coca cola for more than once a day.

v Tooth decay: Sugary foods cannot provide the necessary vitamins and minerals required for a good health; rather the sugar reacts with the ever present dental plaque to produce acids which can be harmful to the enamel producing holes and tooth decay. Thus, the higher the amount of sugar consumed the more the tendency to develop tooth decay.

v Glycation: When sugar is ingested and it enters the blood stream, it looks for attractive things such as proteins and fat molecules to hook up with, this is called glycation. These glycated molecules move around recklessly causing havoc all over the body and end up forming what is called AGEs (Advance Glycation End products) which is a toxic compound. This AGEs is known to speed up the aging process.

v Insulin resistance and Diabetes: Whenever you take sugary foods your blood sugar level rises which triggers the pancreas to secrete insulin to move the sugar from the blood into the cells. Over time the amount of insulin required to do the job increases and subsequently the pancreas may stop responding to the call by the high blood sugar to release insulin leading to Insulin-Dependent diabetes.

v Promotes excessive inflammation: Inflammation on its own is not bad, but sugar makes this inflammation to become excessive and this can speed up the aging process.

v Cardiovascular diseases: Sugar is associated with a decreased level of the good cholesterol, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and an increase in the level of bad cholesterol, Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL). This increase in LDL and a decrease in HDL increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as Arteriosclerosis and hypertension.

v Decreased libido:High levels of sugar in your bloodstream can turn off the gene that controls your sex hormones. The excess calories from the sugary foods are converted and stored as fats in the adipose tissues. Increased fats synthesis deactivates your SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin) gene, causing your levels of SHBG protein to drop dramatically, and it is this SHBG protein that controls your testosterone and estrogen levels, thus libido is affected.

I know by now you must be thinking it’s unfair for such a sweet tasting substance like sugar to have such effects but too bad it’s true. Next time you want to buy food you might want to check the nutritional label just to be conscious of how much sugar you are putting into your system as the chronic consumption of high amounts of sugar is responsible for most of
these effects. you can also substitute the sugar for other natural sweeteners.

Guess the earlier breastcancer is detected the better the chances of the patient but come to think of it,do we really have such facilities here in Nigeria cos i heard cancer cases are on the rise in our hospital.
The main problem is the awareness... people are not aware of the dangers or risks So they don't turn up for screening and when they do it's almost too late
HealthBreast Cancer: What You Should Know by joeterri(op): 7:54am On Oct 11, 2014
Breast Cancer: What you should
know.
I started this blog a few days ago and as i
was trying to figure out what to post
first, it then occurred to me that the month
of October is actually the month for
Breast cancer awareness and i thought
what better time to write something on
breast cancer than now, given its high
rate of incidence and mortality.
Breast cancer is when cancer develops fro
m breast tissues. Like every other
form of cancer, breast cancer is dangerou
s. Statistics show that breast cancer
is among most deadliest form of cancer a
mong women. It is estimated that worldw
ide over 508,000 women died in 2011 due
to breast cancer (Global Health
Estimates, WHO 2013) , roughly one out of
every eight women are diagnosed with
breast cancer at some point in their life tim
e and every minute Breast cancer is
diagnosed. In Nigeria the incidence rate is
1 or 2 out of every 25 women . The
risk is higher in women who are greater th
an 45years of age and also in women who
are older than 35years at the time of birth
of their first child. The higher
incidence rate in the developed countries t
han in developing countries may be
due to the level of awareness in these cou
ntries as more people show up for
test and screening. Breast cancer is also f
ound in men but the incidence rate is more
than a hundred times lesser than that in
the females.
Almost all breast cancers arise from glan
dular tissue, making them
adenocarcinomas (cancer of the glandular
tissue), they usually start in a duct
which carries the milk to the nipple called
the lactiferous duct or lobule which
produces the milk. The cancer can be
non-
invasive, which means it does not spread
beyond the lobule or duct, or invasive, whi
ch means it has spread beyond the lobule
or duct.
Risk factors of developing Breast canc
er include; obesity, lack of exercise,
precocious (early) puberty, having childre
n late or not at all, family history,
smoking (the earlier the age at which smo
king is started the higher the risk),
alcohol consumption, oral contraceptives,
hormone replacement therapy at
menopause, having dense breast tissue, l
ate menopause.
The signs or symptoms for breast cance
r include; a lump in the breast or
under the armpit that feels different from o
ther breast tissue, redness and
puckering or dimpling of the skin of the br
east (peau d’orange), changes in the sh
ape or size of the breast or nipple, disch
arge or bleeding from the nipple,
pulling in of the nipple (inversion of the ni
pple), pain in one of the breast or
armpit, nipple rash. Generally the prognos
is depend on how early the cancer is
diagnosed so you might want to examine
your breast or advice someone to have a
breast examination following the steps I’ve
outlined below.
Self breast examination is
the easiest way to check o
nes breast
for any kind of tumour or l
ump or change in shape a
nd size of the breast. You
can do this while lying do
wn or standing in front of
the mirror following these
steps;
1. While lying down, put yo
ur left arm under your h
ead and use
your right hand to examin
e your left breast, with
your 3 middle
fingers flat, move gently in
small circular motions ov
er the entire
breast checking for any lu
mp, hard knot or thicken
ing. Use different levels of
pressure (light, medium
and firm) over each area
of your breast observing
for any tenderness or pain.
Check the whole
breast, from your collar b
one (clavicle) above your
breast down to
the ribs below your breast
. Switch arms and repeat t
he same
process on the right breas
t.
2. While standing in front o
f the mirror with your arms
on your
hips, look for lumps, new
differences in size and sha
pe, and
swelling or dimpling of th
e skin of the breast.
3. Raise your right arm up
and using the left hand fee
l under the arm for any l
ump, switch the raised ar
m and using the other h
and do the same.
4. Squeeze the nipple of ea
ch breast between your
thumb and
index finger and watch ou
t for any discharge or fluid
from the breast.
5. If you observe any lump
or fluid discharge report ri
ght away to your healthc
are provider.
Apart from breast examination, breast can
cer can be diagnosed using mammogram
screening (which has proven to be the mo
st effective screening method), and
clinical breast examination.
The kind of treatment offered for the bre
ast cancer depends on the stage at
which the diagnosis what made, generally
aggressive methods are employed for inv
asive cancer. The main treatments used
for breast cancer include;
Surgery, radiotherapy,
chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and
biological treatments.
