HealthMenstrual Cramps (dysmenorrhea): Risk Factors And Home Remedies by joeterri(op): 5:30pm On Nov 16, 2014
Menstruation or menstrual periods are a normal part of a woman’s life. Every woman is happy whenever she sees her menstrual period, the problem arises when the flow is accompanied by a discomforting pain at which point it becomes known as dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual flow).

Menstrual cramps are the painful contractions observed during menstruation. The cramps are due to a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin which causes the contraction of the uterine muscles, the uterus contract so as to help expel the menstrual contents.

The pain is experienced in varying degrees by different persons; it varies from mild to severe pain. The severity of this discomforting pain may sometimes result in interference with social and economic activities as the individual may not be able to perform some functions. In extreme cases the individual may go into coma.

The pains or cramps are usually felt as a dull or throbbing pain in the lower abdomen, it radiates to the lower back and thighs. Cramps are usually observed for the first 2 to 3 days of menstrual flow although some women may get cramps just before the flow. For some women these cramps may reduce or completely disappear after first childbirth.

The following factors can increase your chances of suffering from menstrual cramps;

v Reaching puberty at an early age i.e before the age of 11.

v Heavy bleeding during periods also known as menorrhagia.

v Family history i.e having a sister or relative who suffers from menstrual cramps.

v Smoking.

v Excess alcohol consumption.

v Inactivity.

v Obesity.

v Taking illegal drugs.

Many over the counter drugs can be used to treat this discomforting pain. The drugs act mainly to stop production of the hormone-like substance, prostaglandin which causes the contraction. Apart from these drugs, there are some simple home remedies that can equally reduce or stop the pain and even prevent it.

v Put hot water in a plastic bottle and place it on your lower abdomen until you feel better. Applying the heat will help relax the uterine muscles.

v Soak a towel in water, squeeze out the excess water, heat the towel and apply the heat on your lower back and abdomen.

v Take a hot shower, this may help relieve the pain and make you feel more relaxed.

v Make ginger tea by grating and boiling a small piece of ginger for about 5 minutes then add a little lemon juice and drink the tea for about 3 times a day during your flow.

v You can also add ginger to your food while cooking.

v Get a massage to the back and lower abdomen.

v Keep your legs elevated while lying down or lie on your side with your knees bent.

v Exercise prior to the start of your menstrual period.

v Stop smoking.

Mouth wash is great but too much mouth wash kills the health bacteria in your mouth which can lead to a worse smell but eating pineapple is great in killing unhealthy bacteria and removing odor. You still have to brush your teeth though!

HealthCauses And Remedies For Mouth Odour (halitosis) by joeterri(op):
Have you ever talked to someone that has just woken up from sleep? What was the smell like? Foul I guess, that’s exactly what I mean when I say bad breath. Bad breath also known as halitosis is the foul smell you perceive when someone is talking to you or when you’re talking to someone.

Bad breath has a negative effect on one’s social life as no one likes to talk to a guy or girl who has mouth odour. It affects one’s self esteem and reduce one’s efficiency in their place of work or performance at school, it can even ruin your relationship. In general it’s hard to socialize when you’ve got mouth odour.

Causes

A lot of factors which include food, oral hygiene, lifestyle as well as medical conditions can cause mouth odour, some of these causes include;

v When we eat food general, the body digest this food and its then taken up by the blood for distribution, the lungs gets its share of the blood and if the food had strong odour like onions or garlic then the smell will come out with the air when you breathe of talk. Brushing or flossing will only cover up the odour temporary, the odour will surface sooner or later until the whole food in the system Is exhausted

.
v Particles of food eaten are usually get stuck in the gums between the teeth, bacteria act on the food particles giving off the odour.

v Dry mouth also known as xerostomia reduces the cleansing effects of the saliva and hence a bacterium which causes bad breath grows around the teeth, gums and tongue.

v Poor oral hygiene like not brushing of mouth and tongue promotes growth of bacteria around the teeth, gums and tongue and cause bad breath.

v Smoking or chewing of tobacco-based products.

v Hunger/fasting.

v Sleeping with the mouth open causes dry mouth which increases bad breath when you wake up.

v Eating of low carbohydrate diet.

Remedies

v Avoid eating food with strong odour like onions and garlic.

v Brush your teeth and tongue at least twice a day with toothpaste.

v Use fluoride based toothpaste.

v Change your tooth brush after every 2 to 3 months.

v Stop smoking/chewing tobacco based products.

v Eat low fat diet rich in vegetables and fruits.

v Keep the mouth moist by drinking water and/or chewing on sugarless gums.

v See a doctor if the odour persists.

We all take food to provide nutritional support for our body but the reverse might be the case if proper food hygiene is not observed.

So one might ask, what is food hygiene?

Food (culinary) hygiene are those hygiene practices related to food management and cooking to prevent food contamination, food poisoning and minimize the transmission of disease to other foods, humans or animals (for those that keep pets or rear animals).

Food poisoning is a common, yet distressing and sometimes life-threatening problem for millions of people today. Nigeria for example records about 200,000 related food poisoning deaths annually (according to Alfred Inhenkuronye – A visiting Professor of food science and technology at FUT Minna) even our own president His Excellency Goodluck Ebele Jonathan had his own share of food poisoning during his two-day state visit in Gambia in November 2013. . Hence the importance of food (culinary) hygiene for a healthy living cannot be overemphasized.

According to WHO, the key principles of food hygiene are:

v Prevent contamination of food with mixing chemicals spreading from people, pets and pests. e.g. when making use of your insecticide.

v Separate raw and cooked foods to prevent contaminating the cooked food.

v Cook foods for the appropriate length of time and at the appropriate temperature to kill pathogens.

v Store food at the proper temperature to prevent contamination.

v Use safe water and raw materials.

Culinary practices include:

v Cleaning and disinfection of food preparation areas and equipment on a daily basis.

v Careful avoidance of meats contaminated by trichina worms, salmonella and other pathogens or thorough cooking of questionable meat.

v Dish sanitizing by washing with soap and clean water. Please avoid storing dirty plates through the night as they serve as breeding sites for vectors,

v Washing of hands thoroughly before touching any food.

v Washing of hands after touching uncooked food when preparing meals.

v Not sharing of cutlery when eating, hope the lovers would understand.

v Not licking fingers or hands while or after eating, this is common with us, Nigerians.

v Not reusing serving utensils that have been licked.

v Refrigeration of foods.

v Proper disposal of uneaten food and packaging.

Can`t help but observe that I have to improve on my food hygiene practice, lolz.

The soundtrack of daily life in the Jones household is a persistent mantra that Michael and Debbie intone for their 12-year-old son, Landon.
Take a bite.
Take a bite.
Take a bite.
Take a drink.
Take a drink.
Take a bite.
These parents have been forced to jabber away like this in the last year because of their son's mysterious illness: He lacks all impulse to eat or drink. And he might be the only person in the world burdened with this bizarre medical condition.
Michael, 43, who prods most often, is a desperate father. He's become a verbal robot in a grim campaign to keep his boy fed.
Take a bite.
Take a bite.
Take a drink.
"We feel like we're seeing him deteriorate in front of our eyes," Michael said.
Landon, an avid rock music fan, would rather be listening to Aerosmith or the Cars. But he's sick and needs these constant reminders from Dad.
