CrimeOkuama : Army Invades Another Delta Community, Arrests 10 Persons, Razes Homes by joggyko(op): 6:18am On Apr 12, 2024
•Disband Army probe, institute judicial inquiry, SANs, retired judges tell FG
•Alternatively, direct Delta govt to set up a judicial commission of inquiry
•Fault CDS claim that JTF has a police component to investigate murder
•Allow villagers to retrieve the corpses of their dead
•Order military to vacate community; handover suspects to police
•Time to call military to order —Urhobo Renaissance Society
Troops of the Nigerian Army conducting a cordon-and-search operation over the March 14 killing of 17 military personnel at Okuama in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, yesterday invaded another community, Olota, and allegedly whisked away no fewer than 10 persons.
This came on a day Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, and retired judges ripped apart the Board of Inquiry constituted by Defence Headquarters to investigate the March 14 killing of military personnel at Okuama in Ughelli South Local Government of Delta State, saying it had no powers to do so.
the President-General of Olota, but an eyewitness said the military men left with the community’s chairman, Matthew Olokpa, and over 10 others.

He said: “The over 200 soldiers entered Olota in three gunboats this morning (yesterday). They held the Chairman, Matthew Olokpa, Bigi Edjekpewhu, German Obiokute, Kenneth Okorodudu Atua, and others.”

The witness disclosed that the soldiers razed some houses in the community, 50 kilometres from Okuama, and took with them almost all the speedboats they sighted in the jetty.

“Gunshots roared in Olota today (yesterday); we ask those in authority to intervene and tell the soldiers to leave Olota in peace. They left with those apprehended, no fewer than 10 persons. They burnt Germany’s house and two others and destroyed one.

“They also left with many speed boats at the jetty belonging to residents. They beat the community chairman to a stupor before they moved him with the others, along with a 75-engine-powered boat belonging to Kenneth. This latest crisis may not be connected with Okuama.”

Recall that the army had visited the same community and others, including Arhavwarien, Orere, and Omosuomo, more than a week ago, searching for arms and ammunition snatched from the dead soldiers and fleeing suspects.
Meanwhile, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, and retired judges have ripped apart the Board of Inquiry constituted by Defence Headquarters to investigate the March 14 killing of military personnel at Okuama in Chelli South Local Government of Delta State.
They told the federal government that the correct thing to do was to institute a judicial commission of inquiry into the incident or ask Delta State government to set one up.

The military panel, headed by Air Vice-Marshal David Ajayi, started sitting, Wednesday, in Warri. However, Okuama community, whose leaders and lawyer, said the displaced residents were hiding and suffering in the forests because of the cordon-and-search operation by the Army, rebuffed the hearing.

But six representatives of Okoloba community in Bomadi Local Government Area, whose boundary dispute with Okuama triggered the tragic episode, appeared before the Ajayi-led board of inquiry on Wednesday afternoon, while officials prevented reporters from covering the proceedings.

Speaking to Vanguard, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, SAN, and Life Bencher, former Attorney-General of Akwa Ibom State, Uwemedimo Nwoko SAN, and retired President of the Delta State Area Customary Court, Miakpor Emiaso, said the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, did not have the power to set up a public inquiry into the Okuama incident.

Olayiwola Afolabi, SAN, and Chief Magistrate E.O Eferakoro, retd., advised the federal government to order the Army to vacate Okuama.

Army can’t set up a public inquiry—Akpomudje, SAN
Akpomudje, the Otota (Prime Minister) of the ancient Olomu Kingdom in Delta State, said in his reaction: “A public inquiry will mean that members of the public will have access to go and say their mind because it is an inquiry. Is that what they have set up? The Chief of Defence Staff does not have those powers.

“It is unknown that an internal inquiry within the army cannot be open to the public? May be he can do that just to ascertain some facts.

“However, an inquiry that will touch on how the whole scenario of the killings in Okuama happened is not a matter for the Army to do. We are asking the federal government to set up that inquiry. If not the federal government, then Delta State government.

“Now, on the issue of whether the army has powers to do investigation, well, with the greatest respect, what investigation? Is the military going to investigate itself?
“That is why it is said that you cannot be a judge in your matter; they should leave that to either the federal or the state government to do.

“When it comes to investigation, it is the police that will do it, independent of the component of the police force in the Joint Task Force, JTF, he is talking about a combined team of several security outfits, and does not have the jurisdiction and power to conduct the investigation.”

Army, a concerned party, can’t institute inquiry —Nwoko, SAN
Uwemedimo Nwoko SAN, who spoke to Vanguard in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, said: “Yes, 17 soldiers were killed, and the event that occurred was, of serious, consequence but the government should set up the board of inquiry, not the Army, to ensure transparency in that process, it is important.

‘The government should set up the board of inquiry itself, not the military because it is an interested party. The Army is already a victim, so they cannot set it up.

“Whatever the federal government is doing must abide by the rule of law. Whether it involves individuals, communities, civil security agencies, or the military, the important thing is that the government must work within the confines of the rule of law.
“So much damage has been done in that community, the government should engage the survivors. It should be able to stop the security pressure from the situation that occurred.

“Secondly, it should find out the extent of damage, how many people have lost their lives, because it was not the militants that killed the soldiers that are suffering; it is innocent people that suffered the brunt that escalated on their heads.
“The government, particularly to manage the environment, should find out how many people died and see what procedure can be adopted to ensure that the place is sanitized.”

Independent body should conduct probe—Emiaso,
ex-president, customary court.
In Delta State, retired President of the Delta State Area Customary Court, Miakpor Emiaso, said: “It is not about constitution, we are talking about fairness, canons of natural justice that you cannot be a judge in your case.

“If Defence Headquarters sets up a panel, the panel will have allegiance to Defence Headquarters which may have an overbearing influence over such a panel. Therefore, the outcome of the efforts of that panel would be suspect. We may not get an objective result from the efforts.

“We have suggested that since the military are the ones that are primarily affected by this dastardly act, they should allow an independent body to carry out the investigation.”
The military should hand suspects to police —Afolabi, SAN
Reacting to the military board of inquiry, Edo-based Olayiwola Afolabi, SAN, asserted: “The federal government should order the military to vacate the place immediately, they should leave the place, they have no right to take over the community. It is wrong.

“The Inspector General of Police should be empowered to take over all arrested suspects, so they can be investigated and then be prosecuted.

“The Attorney General of the Federation has the power to order the military to disband that panel; we are not in a banana republic.

“What the military has done in setting up a board is wrong, it is unlawful because the people concerned are not military officers, it is criminal, you must go to the regular court, there is a Supreme Court decision on this matter, you can only do this if the people involved are military.”

Villagers should recover corpses of their dead — Chief Magistrate Eferakoro, retd,
Retired Chief Magistrate E.O Eferakoro told Vanguard in Warri: “What the army did cannot be right, they cannot be a judge in their case. The army has questions to answer, so they should leave the investigation to a neutral body like the police.
“The position of the law is that if they do not see dead bodies, it means nobody is missing. Do they have the number of people living in Okuama? You cannot accuse somebody of murder if you cannot bring the physical body. Therefore, if they announced a figure, they should produce the number of dead bodies in a tally. The army is aware of this.
”The premise that the people of Okuama are victims of state malevolence is now glaring to all with the conflicting utterances coming from the peak of the military high command. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has offered four different narratives on the Okuama incident.”

SportsNeymar Avoids $3m Fine For Building Lake At Brazilian Mansion by joggyko(op): 1:21pm On Apr 11, 2024
A Brazilian court has suspended a $3 million fine imposed on soccer star Neymar last year for building a lake at his mansion on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro without an environmental license.

The ruling — dated Monday and obtained by AFP Wednesday — from Judge Adriana Ramos de Mello cited a report from state environmental authority INEA asserting that the project did not in fact require special environmental permits.
“As the applied fines were in the millions of dollars, continuing to demand (payment)… will inflict substantial, disproportionate and even illegal prejudice” against the Al Hilal SFC player, the judge said.
The town council in Mangaratiba issued four fines for a total of 16 million reais ($3.3 million) for “environmental violations in the construction of an artificial lake at the player’s mansion” in the tourist town about 130 kilometers (80 miles) outside of Rio.
Among “dozens of infractions” detected, the authorities listed “carrying out work subject to environmental control without authorization,” capture and diversion of river water without authorization, and “removal of land and suppression of vegetation without authorization.”

But the judge sided with the INEA’s findings, saying in her ruling that their inspection “confirmed that no (environmental) license is required for such activities, and therefore the alleged infractions “were not present.”

Neymar bought the Mangaratiba mansion in 2016. According to Brazilian media it features a heliport, spa and gym.

PoliticsHardship Protest: Police Pledge To Defend Protesters Across Nigeria by joggyko(op): 4:24pm On Feb 26, 2024
…Places Men on Red Alert Across Nigeria
…Warns Impostors Against Hijack

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the rights and freedom of protesters are protected if the proposed protest action by the Nigeria Labour Congress and other unions slated for 27 and 28 February goes ahead nationwide.
The Force Headquarters while noting that personnel have been placed on red alert and will be deployed to ensure peaceful protest, said it will remain vigilant against any attempts to hijack such protests by individuals or groups of persons with sinister intents.
A statement by Force headquarters said, “On the heels of the proposed nationwide protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the NPF hereby affirms the fundamental right of all citizens of the country to engage in peaceful protest in line with extant laws.

“In line with its lawful duty to maintain law and order, the Nigeria Police Force has deployed personnel nationwide and placed them on red alert to monitor the planned protest.

“All Commissioners of Police and their respective supervising officers have been briefed and instructed to coordinate the officers on the ground in ensuring the safety and security of all participants if the protests hold as planned.

“While recognizing the importance of peaceful protest, the Nigeria Police Force remains vigilant against any attempts to hijack such protests by individuals or groups of persons with sinister intents.

“Emphatically, the force, therefore, is fully prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to any unlawful activities or acts of violence that may threaten peace, public safety, and security in the event of such.

“It is vital to state that the Police has spread its tentacles nationwide to curb any attempt by some individuals who might want to leverage the nationwide protests, to create brouhaha, and such will be met with an approved legal and proportional force.

The statement said, “the Police will not allow wanton break down of law and order, loss of lives and property like we had experienced, in some instances, in the past, in any part of the country.
“The Inspector-General of Police urges all participants at the proposed protest to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly, adhering to the principles of non-violence and respect for the rights of others.
“He also calls on the organizers to cooperate with the Police and other relevant security agencies in ensuring that their protests remain peaceful and orderly even as the NPF works tirelessly to ensure that protests are conducted in a safe environment, conducive to the promotion of democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.”

PoliticsHardship: Speed Up Your Economic Policies, NYCN Tells Tinubu by joggyko(op): 2:57pm On Feb 26, 2024
The National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has urged President Bola Tinubu to roll out economic policies that will ameliorate the hardship currently being experienced in the country.
The Council, which is the apex youth body in Nigeria, through its President, Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, said it was worried about the rising cost of living, noting that many students are finding it difficult to feed.
“Nigerians are hungry and Nigerians are angry; a hungry man is an angry man. We call on the President and the state Governors to roll out programs and policies that will resolve the economic and security challenges in our dear nation,” the NYCN President stated.

However, he implored Nigerians, especially youths, to be patient with the government as it strives to ensure that the current untold hardship, orchestrated by the fuel subsidy removal, is mitigated within a shortest period.

He enjoined the Nigerian Youth not to embark on any protest or join any planned protests against the federal government.

Sokubo said it was unfortunate that some unpatriotic elements are capitalizing on the rising inflation and erratic exchange rate to exploit fellow citizens.

“Sometimes, it is not only the authorities that cause our problems, even we the citizens are taking advantage of what is happening in our society to undo our dear fellow citizens,” he added.

On his part, the National Deputy Secretary General of the NYCN, Comrade Rikki Nwajiofor, while reading out the communique of the National Management Committee of the organization, disclosed that the organ passed a vote of confidence on the Sukubo-led administration of the Council.

The communique equally stated that Akoshile Mukhtar; Dotun Omoloye; Bashir Garba; Smart Uwakwe; Zaka Nehemiah; Izunna Agwuncha; Ibrahim Inuwa Dangata; Aminu Ubale Funtua; Blessing Onne Okwe; and Clinton Avwoke, were expelled from the organization for acting in breach of the NYCN Constitution, 2018, as amended.

It declared that the Grand Commander of the Nigerian Youth, GCNY, title that was conferred on the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, as illegal, saying it did not emanate from the leadership of the NYCN.
“As it stands today, the only Grand Commander of the Nigerian Youth is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Management categorically stated that the award given to the former Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, by some money-loving Youths in the name of NYCN, is fake and invalid.

“Management recalled that he had earlier been awarded the Doyen of Nigerian Youth and he remains so,” the communique further read.

PoliticsShelve Planned Protest, It’s Counter Productive–coalition Urges NLC by joggyko(op): 5:46pm On Feb 25, 2024
Ahead of the planned nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress,TUC, a Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, under the aegis of the Lagos Peoples Assembly, in collaboration with Defend Lagos Coalition, have stressed the need to shelve the protest in the interest of national peace and progress.
The coalition, however, called for continued dialogue with the Federal Government in order to avert further hardship on citizens.
The coalition include: Campaign Against Impunity and Domestic Violence, Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate CPPM, Patriotism Awareness Forum, Centre for Leadership and Democratic Ethics, Coalition of Oodua Self Determination Groups, COSEG, Ideal Society Movement, among others.

Spokesman of the coalition, comrade Nelson Ekujumi, made the remarks during a media briefing, titled: Constructive engagements is the way out of our economic challenges,” on Sunday, in Lagos.

According to Ekujumi, “LPA, which is a coalition of over 80 civil society and community-based organizations, public interests and self-determination groups and small business owners whose businesses are yet to fully recover from the EndSARS protest and covid-19, with a focus on good governance, peace and development of our dear Lagos State in particular and Nigeria in general.

“Comrades, associates, the media, ladies and gentlemen, this press conference is one out of so many of our medium for constructive engagements with both the governed and government on how to hold the government accountable as well as play our roles as patriotic and conscientious citizens at all times.

“As we all know, it’s an indisputable fact that Nigerians are going through economic challenging times like citizens of other countries in the world, which is an admission of the truism that the present day economic challenges is a global phenomenon.

“The economic challenges we are presently facing was foretold in the past by economic experts who x-rayed our economic reality and admonished us to be prepared for tough times ahead and like it’s said, “tough times don’t last, but tough people do.

“Therefore, we are optimistic that Nigerians as tough people will overcome this present economic times like we have always done collectively in the past.
“As much as we are not here to engage in the blame game, it is imperative for us to recognize that the implementation of the removal of the fuel subsidy regime by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration and the unification of the forex system, was an inevitable and without doubt the only alternative to terminating the hemorrhaging of the Nigerian economy and to retool it for the economic prosperity of its people in the long run.
“We have watched and listened to how some persons and interest have tried to mislead and confuse the Nigerian people by saying that the retooling of the economy by the President Tinubu administration is a foreign economic pill that was prescribed for Nigeria.

“Absolutely untrue, Nigerians themselves being economically savvy prescribed this solution in order to remove the Nigerian economy from the life support machine that it was plugged in.

“Today, the new economic measures has come with some pains which is not unexpected such as the prices of goods and services shooting up due to so many factors, some of which are within the control of the government and citizenry, we are also aware that the revenue accruing to government at all tiers have increased triple fold.

“Thus, we are living witnesses to the temporary palliative measures put in place to ease the burden on Nigerians by the federal government as well as the recently unveiled palliative measures by the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration in Lagos State which includes reducing public transportation fares by 25%, reducing work days of category of public workers from 5 to 3 days, opening up of 42 Sunday markets to allow Lagosians to buy food stuffs at reduced price, as well as the recently inaugurated committee on palliatives, among several others.
“We can see for ourselves that the citizens cries about the economic reality have not gone unheeded not only from the federal government, but also here in Lagos State, where we see local government council administrations also embarking on palliative measures to cushion the effect of the economic challenges on our people.

“It is in this vein, that as LPA which is an assemblage of Nigerians of different ethnic, religious and professional calling living and doing business in Lagos, that we are earnestly adding our voice to that of other patriots and men and women of goodwill and peace, to call on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to shelve it’s two days protest marches for the sake of national peace and security.

“While we recognize the right of the labour unions to embark on protest or strike, as conscientious citizens and residents of Lagos, we are conscious that Labour as a factor of production creates wealth which is the motto of NLC, and going on a protest march at this point in time will be injurious to the economic wellbeing of Lagosians, Nigerians and a negation of what labour stands for.

“Lagos State like we all know is a volatile environment, because it is the envy of anti democratic elements who would stop at nothing to pull the state and Nigeria backward at the slightest opportunity.

“The trauma of the 2020 EndSARS protests with its damage to limbs, destruction of life and public and private properties still haunts us till date.
“The only solution to our economic challenges is constructive engagements between the government and the citizenry and not protest marches or strikes, the Lagos State government has inaugurated it’s committee on the distribution of palliatives which is made up of eminent Nigerians.

“It is our conviction and belief that this committee of which we are admonishing other states governments to follow suit, should be given the benefit of doubt to play it’s part in alleviating the plight of the common man for which they have been constituted to do.

“We want it placed on record that LPA will help monitor the various social intervention programmes recently announced by the Lagos State government to ensure they are judiciously executed for the benefit of the people and we will also provide regular independent reports to the Lagos State government as our own contribution.

“As an assembly of Lagosians, LPA will at all times, hold government at all levels, accountable to the tenets of good governance, while also admonishing the citizenry to be alive to their duties and responsibilities.”

PoliticsHardship: 65 Csos Pull Out Of NLC,TUC Planned Strike by joggyko(op):
NLC protest

…urge Labour Unions to dialogue with FG

Ahead of the planned nationwide strike by Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC)and the Trade Union Congress, (TUC) ,65 Civil Society Organisations have pulled out, saying the strike might stir up anarchy and cause more hardship on citizens.
The Civil Society Organisations under the aegis of Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Forum also warned against going the way Sudan went, and called for dialogue with the Federal Government.

“Any attempt to embark on a nationwide strike during these critical period of hunger and harsh economy could be hijacked by hoodlums and criminal elements, who have been waiting for the slightest opportunity to unleash terror; disrupt public peace, loot business premises and markets,” the CSOs said.

On February 16, the NLC had announced a nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28, over the failure to implement the agreements reached on October 2, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

This decision followed the conclusion of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the federal government regarding the widespread hardship.

The Coalition of the CSOs which disclosed this in a statement jointly signed by Comrade Buba Ibrahim Mohammed and Comrade George Phillips, the Coordinator and Secretary, insisted that the strike action will only stir up civil unrest and further worsen the already bad security situation as well as damage the fragile economy.

According the Coalition, the views gathered from some of their members and citizens across the country were that the labour unions are trying to undermine the current Tinubu led administration and create a process for break down of law and order to score cheap political points.”

“As Civil Society Organisations, we do understand the depth of economic challenges facing the ordinary citizens, especially the workers, but we cannot fold our arms and support a move that will further damage and threaten our peaceful coexistence.”
While stating that it’s not unaware that the labour unions had the constitutional right to make demands and embark on strike to drive home their demands ,it maintained that NLC and TUC should know that Nigeria is already sitting on keg of gun powder that must not be allowed to explode.
“Part of reasons we have refused to join forces with labour unions to create anarchy and cause more hardship for the people . Instead, we are making frantic efforts to meet with federal government to discuss how to amicably resolve the issues at stake.”

“We recognise the importance of addressing labour-related concerns and advocating for workers’ rights, we kindly urge the labour unions to explore alternative means of dialogue and negotiation with the relevant authorities,” they added.

The Federal Government and Cement Manufacturers have agreed on a N7,000 to N8,000 per 50 kg bag of cement to halt the astronomical rise in the price of the product.

This agreement was part of a deal struck after several hours of meeting held behind closed doors at the Headquarters of the Ministry of Works, between the Federal Government and cement manufacturers , in Abuja, on Monday.

The manufacturers tentatively agreed to sell a 50kg bag of cement at a retail price between N7,000 and N8,000, depending on location nationwide,

They however put a caveat that the price drop from the current market price would largely depend on government fulfilling its promised interventions in certain areas of concern to ameliorate critical challenges faced in the industry.

Retail price for cement jumped from N5,000 to N10,000 within one week in the open market, after wholesalers citing increasing cost of transportation and other variables, made adjustments to the price they sell to retailers.

Retailers in turn transferred the additional cost burden to consumers to stay afloat.
This prompted President Bola Tinubu to order the Ministers of Works, David Umahi and his Trade and Investment counterpart, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite. to meet with Cement manufacturers to find a solution to the crisis.
Umahi, had while calling for the meeting expressed the Federal Government’s concern over the development adding that if the situation wasn’t brought under control, it had the potential of hurting the prosperity agenda of rhe current administration .

After the meeting, Umahi read out a communique in which he mentioned concerns raised by the manufacturers.

These concerns include: bad roads, smuggling, high cost of energy, and the Forex crisis. This according to the manufacturers were the primary reasons behind the price hike.

He also said the manufacturers expressed willingness to reduce the prices going forward.
Manufacturers at the meeting include: Dangote Cement PLC, BuA Cement PLC, Larfarge Africa PLC and Cement Producers Association.

Reapresentatoves of the Federal Government include: The Minister of Works and his counterpart in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment,

While reading the communique, Umahi said, “The meeting noted the challenges of the manufacturers like: Cost of gas;, High import duty on spare parts; Bad road network; High foreign exchange; and Smuggling of cement to neighbouring nations.

“The government noted the challenges and reacted as follows: Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to seek some remedies from Mr. President on cost of gas and import duties.

“Federal Ministry of Works to give more attention to fixing of the roads, especially around the locations of the manufacturers.
“On the issue of smuggling cement, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to deepen the already started engagement with the National Security Adviser on how to stop the smuggling.

“The cement manufacturers and the Government noted that the current high price of cement is abnormal in some locations nationwide. Ideally, cement retail prices should not cost more than ₦7,000.00 to ₦8,000.00/ 50kg bag of cement.

“Therefore, the three cement manufacturers: Dangote Cement Plc, BUA Cement Plc and Larfarge Africa Plc have agreed that cement cost will not be more than between ₦7,000.00 and ₦8,000.00/50kg bag depending on the location.

“Going forward, Government advised cement manufacturers to set up a price monitoring mechanism to ensure compliance, and manufacturers have willingly accepted to do so and to sanction any of her distributors or retailers found wanting.

“Government expects the agreed price to drop after securing government’s interventions on the challenges of the manufacturers on gas, import duty, smuggling, and better road network.

“The meeting agreed to reconvene in 30 days to review progress made.”

The Student Union President, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Abbas Akinremi, has disclosed that the lion attack incident that led to the death of a zookeeper was due to human error.

SportsMessi Insists Hong Kong No-show Was Due To Injury, Not Politics by joggyko(op): 8:21pm On Feb 19, 2024
Argentine football star Lionel Messi insisted Monday that his absence from a match in Hong Kong two weeks ago that drew the ire of spectators was not a snub but prompted by injury.

In a video posted on China’s Weibo social media platform, Messi rejected chatter that his no-show was “for political reasons” and said if this had been the case, “I would not have traveled” to Hong Kong in the first place.
“As everyone knows, I always want to play and be in every game,” he said.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner stayed on the bench throughout Inter Miami’s 4-1 win against a Hong Kong select XI on February 4.

His no-show drew boos and calls for refunds from thousands of fans who had shelled out large sums to see the World Cup-winning captain play in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese territory.

Widely considered the best player of his generation, Messi is a highly marketable sportsman who people around the world will pay top dollar to see, even in the twilight of his trophy-laden career.

Some nationalist politicians and outlets interpreted Messi’s absence — and his subsequent appearance at a similar match in Japan — as a snub to China, without offering evidence.

Sports bosses in China subsequently canceled two friendly matches featuring world champions Argentina.

Messi spoke in his video of a “very nice and very close” relationship with China, a country with which he said he had “done a lot of things” including matches and events.

His reason for not playing, the star striker said, was due to injury, specifically “inflammation of an adductor” muscle.

…..pleads with Nigerians to show understanding

The Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has attributed the current hardship being faced by Nigerians to a failed economy inherited by President Bola Tinubu.
Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State
, who disclosed this during his ‘thank you tour’ of Ijebu Ode local government area of the State, said President Tinubu is working round the clock to find solutions to the economic challenges facing the nation.

He therefore pleaded with Nigerians to show understanding and cooperate with the present administration, as it remains committed to a more prosperous nation.

Daniel added that he was quite aware just like the government of the day that there is hunger in the land, saying that this prompted him to lend helping hand with the monthly distribution of over 12,000 food packs containing rice, beans, garri and semovita to the people of his Constituency.

Aside from the distribution of over 12,000 food packs to the people at the event, empowerment tools such as sowing machines, generators and grinding machines, among others, were also handed over to the people.

He said, “really, things might not be so good as we want it, but I want to plead with you my people to show understanding because our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited what we can call a failed economy. All what he is trying to do now is to find solution to the challenges”.

“I want to assure you that there is light at the end of the tunnel and our country will be better for it. The President needs our cooperation now than ever before and I am assuring you that just very soon everything will be fine with us”

Daniel reiterated that he was committed to using his representation at the senate to facilitate different laudable projects that will make life more meaningful to the residents of Ogun East.

He disclosed that within his nine months in the senate, he has facilitated over 2,000 employments for the teeming youths of the senatorial district, while a Naval Base in Abigi, Ogun Waterside local government, as well as an Aviation School at Ilara Remo in Remo North local government will take off before the end of the year.

He added that in addition to renovation of schools as well as giving of free interest loans to traders, he has equally partnered with an Eye Foundation to assist with free surgeries for people with eye problems, saying that the first batch of 20 beneficiaries every month just had their successful surgeries.

While promising never to relent in supporting the residents of the senatorial district to upscale their welfare, the former governor said that the local government tour would be a monthly affair until all the nine local governments in the senatorial district are covered.

PoliticsI Won Edo APC Primaries With Over 6,000 Votes - Senator Okpebholo by joggyko(op): 6:19pm On Feb 19, 2024
One of the ‘candidates’ who emerged from Saturday’s All Progressives Congress APC Governorship Primary Election in Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo has revealed how he defeated his closest rival, Dennis Idahosa with over 6,000 votes to emerge victorious.

In a statement issued Monday in Abuja, Senator Okpebholo said though thugs disrupted the collation, the final tally shows that he won convincingly with a commanding majority.

Urging his supporters to remain calm and that justice will be served at the end of the day, the Edo Central senator said as candidate of the party, he is certain of reclaiming the State for the APC.

He said; “Let me use this opportunity to thank and appreciate all APC members of Edo State for nominating me as the Party’s Candidate for the governorship election come September 2024. I am immensely humbled by the trust and confidence reposed in me.

“You will recall that the National Working Committee NWC of our great Party, APC, nominated highly reputable officials to officiate in the primary election scheduled for the 17th of February 2024 with Dr. Stanley Ugboaja, as the State Returning Officer.

“After the primary election, which was adjudged to be very peaceful, the collation of results commenced at the designated centre by the collation officials in the presence of INEC officials, the Press, the law enforcement agencies and other party stalwarts.

“Surprisingly, while the collation of results was ongoing and upon the declaration of eight local government, some irate thugs suspectedly commissioned by my closest rival, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, who had only won two local Governments as against my six, stormed the venue of the state collation center and disrupted the process by beating up collation officials, party representatives, the press crew and others.

“To my amazement and that of well-meaning members of our great party in Edo State, information currently reaching me from Benin City, Edo State has it that the same thugs that disrupted the collation of results as earlier stated, also invaded the State Secretariat of the party early this morning, destroyed and looted valuables in the offices in the guise of purportedly looking for the result of the primary election, which was never conducted by the State Executives of the party.

“Let me use this opportunity to commend the State Retuning Officer, Dr. Stanley Ugboaja and other members of the Committee for their resilience in continuing the collation and subsequent official declaration of final results after the urgent medical attention rendered to the injured members.

“It is now on record that the total votes scored by me is twelve thousand, one hundred and forty-five (12,145) as against my closest rival who scored only five thousand, five hundred and thirty-six votes (5,536)

“As a result, I enjoin you not to be deterred by rumours from other quarters as I am very optimistic that justice will prevail at the end. I am convinced that the National Working Committee of our great party, under the able leadership of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje will ensure that truth will prevail over falsehood. I remain loyal to my party and to Mr. President, a universally acknowledged democrat and a man of goodwill who is prepared to change the fortunes of our dear nation.

“I am also convinced beyond doubt that our great party, the APC, is well positioned to reclaim Edo State and set her on the path of sustainable and holistic development in line with Mr. President’s transformation agenda.

“Let me use this medium to plead with all those affected by the unprovoked attack to shield their swords as two wrongs cannot make a right. This is an in-house squabble and should be treated as such.”

PoliticsHardship: Give Tinubu More Time, Akpabio, Wike Beg Nigerians by joggyko(op): 7:26pm On Feb 18, 2024
In view of the unprecedented economic hardship in the country, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, have called on Nigerians to be more patient, assuring that the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were the only way to build a stronger economy.
Both Akpabio and Wike spoke at the weekend during a Thanksgiving Service organised at Koroma Tai Local Government Area of Rivers state by Senator Barry Mpigi representing Rivers Southeast Senatorial District to appreciate God for his electoral victory.
Akpabio, many senators, members of the House of Representatives, Minister of Works, Dave Umahi; Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri, former ministers, a delegation from Akwa Ibom led by Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, some Rivers State Cabinet members, members of Rivers state House of Assembly, local government chairmen, leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were among dignitaries that graced the event.

Wike said though people complained that the decisions of President Tinubu were hard, they remained the only way to take the country to its destination, adding that the decisions to turnaround and address years of rot were not miracles expected to materialise within six months.

“I believe that God in his infinite mercy will give us the strength to work and continue to support Mr. President. The decision of Mr. President is hard but if we are patient at the end of the day we will get to where we want to go.

“You want him to bring a policy to change something that had spoilt many years ago within six months. Even if it is miracle, it is difficult. What is required is give him support.

“I seriously believe in the Renewed Hope Agenda. We urge you to believe in the Renewed Hope agenda. We are going to do everything to continue to support Mr. President”.

The minister said most people in the country were always quick to forget past incidents and recalled that governors and others, who won their re-election at the Supreme Court recently heaped praises on Tinubu for not interfering in their cases.

“I watched after the Court verdicts of the election, everybody that came out would say I thank Mr. President for not interfering. But immediately that expired people are saying a different thing. I watched every governor after they thanked God the next person was Mr. President. But just after two weeks, everything evaporated. Now it is Mr . ‘President we are dying’.
Wike appealed to the people not to lose hope, adding that the administration of the FCT through the support of President Tinubu was a sign of better days ahead. “But don’t lose hope. Look at what we are doing in Abuja today, it means that Mr. President will do better. It is a sign of good things to come. People are saying Wike is doing well but it is because the President is in support of it. The President is committed to seeing that Nigerians have positive impacts in their lives”
“It is good to appreciate. I know what Barry has passed through politically. I thank God he has come to appreciate God. I thank the Senate President and the Senate for considering us worthy to head one of the most important committees; Committee Chairman on Works.

“It has never happened for a minority party to be given such position. You can go to sleep with your two eyes closed because Barry will not disappoint you. We have always worked together.

“With the forces we have, I don’t know of anybody who will challenge us. It is like tomorrow is 2027. For me is very far. I cannot wait. The two leadership of the PDP and APC are here.

“Which state can boast of this kind of unity? It is only in Rivers that you can find this unity. People don’t like it. So they do everything possible to make sure we are divided. But since we know, we have refused to be divided. This is the only state where the ruling party will win for Presidency, the opposition will take the National Assembly in election that happened the same time and the same day.

” This is what we call uncommon. This is the first time I see no clear cut of party and that is how it is supposed to be. Party is a vehicle that conveys you to your destination. When you get to where you are going you come down and talk about governance
“Insecurity doesn’t know which party you belong to. Hardship doesn’t know the party you belong to. So, all of us must put our heads together, think together and proffer solutions. And that is what is happening at the leadership of the National Assembly.

” I love what you are doing. You know me very well if you are not doing well I will tell you that you are not doing well. This is the first time you see a robust relationship between the National Assembly and the President”.

Also speaking, Akpabio in an analogy compared the poor economic condition President Tinubu inherited to a bucket filled with foams while underneath it is small quantity of water.

“God has been able to merge us together politically. What we need now is economic rejuvenation and I believe strongly that through President Ahmed Tinubu God will answer our prayer.

“Nigeria was like a foam inside a pail. As the foam has filled the pail you think that it was water. The economic situation was tricky. By the time you push your hands you will only touch water towards the bottom. So the kind of economic mess we were in a lot of people do not understand.

“Like Obama would say you cannot know Washington until you get to Washington. So by the time we went in, the economic situation was terrible. We don’t even know what to charge the former Central Bank governor with whether to charge him for putting foam on top of the pail or to charge him for printing notes without income. I don’t know what we will charge him with.

“What we know is that we are here today because of the actions and policies that they took and we recognise that but we are now battling to ensure that Nigerians can sleep with their eyes closed and have three square meals on their tables”.

He insisted that Tinubu’s policies were designed to gradually give the country the desired economic footprints adding that such feat would not happen overnight

“But be rest assured that we campaigned for this job and we will not let you down. All we need is patience. The rot that has happened n Nigeria for many years cannot be solved within months”.

Akpabio appealed to Wike to take a journey in Ogoni land and find a governor for Rivers that would match his achievements in the state.

PoliticsA- Ibom Coastal Communities Seek Ex-militants Protection Over Incessant Pirate’s by joggyko(op): 6:21pm On Feb 18, 2024
FIVE coastal local government areas in Akwa Ibom state, comprising Oron, Udung Uko, Mbo, Okobo and Urue-Offong Oruko are seeking protection of ex-militants against sea pirates attacks and other violent criminal elements.
The President-General of Oro Union, Sir Essang Bassey while addressing a press conference at the weekend, decried the menace of sea piracy in the area
Bassey appealed to the state and federal governments to allow ex-militants support governnment security agencies in combating sea pirates in Oro nation.

His words: “Just like the federal government engaged Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tantita firm, to police the waterways of Niger Delta against pipeline vandals and oil thieves on high seas, the same should be done in Akwa Ibom state.

“I recall that ex-militants from the state particularly the ones from Oron federal constituency approached me and suggested that they should be allowed to combat the menace of piracy on our waterways

“I think the state government can use them to protect our maritime corridor from these criminals who have made life unbearable for us.

“If this is not done, the blue economy potentials will remain a mirage. Therefore, we are appealing to the Federal and state governments to think towards this”

The President-General also decried the marginalization of the Oro nation by successive administrations in the state.

He noted that such politics of exclusion could be seen in failure of both State and federal governments to effectively implement the Ibaka Deep seaport Project whose original status and nomenclature had been altered to become Ibom Deep seaport.
“Successive administrations in the state have robbed Oro people of development over the years in terms of strategic infrastructure and key projects, especially the major Uyo – Nsit Atai road travesing into Oro”, Bassey stressed

PoliticsFajobi Backs Parliamentary System In Nigeria by joggyko(op): 6:12pm On Feb 18, 2024
The Spiritual Head of Ijo Orunmila Adulawo, Oluwo Ifagbemi Adedotun Fajobi, has urged Nigerians to throw their weight behind parliamentary system previously used in Nigeria’s First Republic.

Fajobi stated that the move has become necessary in the face of the current state of the nation, especially the hardship faced by the Nigerian masses in every sector,
Reading the communique of the first Congress of the group in the new year at their country headquarters in Ososa, Ijebu, Ogun State at the weekend, the Olori Oluwo and the Head of the group, who briefed journalists, expressed their frustration with the expensive presidential system and the overbearing powers of the president.

Olori Oluwo, expressed dissatisfaction about ineffectiveness and inability of the presidential system to find a lasting solution to problems in the country.

“It is high time we opt for the Parliamentary system of government and jettison the Presidential system of government, which in all honesty was not working for us as a nation.

“And on daily basis, prices of commodities had been skyrocketing and thus make life unbearable for all and sundry.

“The proposal we traditionalists is seeking is to revert to the First Republic system with a prime minister, a member of parliament, serving as the head of government, similar to the British system,” Fajobi said

In another development, the congregation appealed that Nigerians should not jettison traditional religion and ways of handling things, especially when putting political office holders in office.

The group hereby, resolved that henceforth, “we should recommend the use of traditional materials like cutlass, locally-made gun and axe for our would-be-office holders, this one would further instil fears in their minds as once suggested by the former Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile -Ife, Professor Wande Abimbola, because according to him all of us have our traditional ways and would always act as check and balances because there was already a lay-down repercussions that if you do so and so, this would be the consequence or consequence as the case may be.”
He also recalled the incidences of the traditional rulers either been kidnapped or killed, saying, “they should be allowed to undergo all the necessary pre-kingship rituals (Ipebi), which would not make them ordinary and just monarch, that would be dealt with just like that.”
FG
Oluwo also advised the present administration to encourage farming, just as he reminded them that farming has gone far with a lot of researches and technology know-how, which according to him if urgently implemented, could salvage the country from further loosing the youths and potentials to the foreign trips.

He also advised that tourism should be embraced, citing examples of tourism attractions and sites that can be further developed and earn the nation money.

“Let the foreigners too bring money from their countries and visit our tourist attractions like Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, Ikogosi water spring in Erin Ijesha. We have zoos at the University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and many others,” Olori Oluwo said.

He also called on present administration to empower the activists to fully combat the problems in the land.

PoliticsRising Costs: Hardship Could Lead To Social Unrest In Nigeria – Afdb by joggyko(op): 5:53pm On Feb 18, 2024
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has expressed concern that rising prices of fuel and other commodities could lead to social unrest in Nigeria.

According to the bank, rising cost of living could also lead to social unrest in Ethiopia, Angola and Kenya respectively.
The AfDB issued the warning in its macroeconomic performance and outlook for 2024 in which it projected Africa’s economy to grow higher than the 3.2 per cent recorded in 2023.

The AfDB projected that growth on the continent will rebound to 3.8% in 2024.

However, the bank cautioned that an increase in fuel and commodity prices occasioned by currency depreciation or subsidy removal in Nigeria, Angola, Kenya and Ethiopia could trigger internal conflicts.

It stated, “Internal conflicts and violence could also result from rising prices for fuel and other commodities due to weaker domestic currencies and reforms.

“For instance, the removal of fuel subsidies in Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria and the resulting social costs has led to social unrest driven by opposition to government policy.”

The AfDB also said the rise of geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East in addition with the El Nino phenomenon, may trigger supply chain disruptions, which could aggravate energy and food inflation across the world with Africa more vulnerable to these shocks.

Recall that Nigeria has been faced with rising cost of living, which has led to some Nigerians hitting the streets in some states in recent times in protest.

The protest over increasing hardship started in Minna, Niger State on February 5, with many other states holding similar protests after.
Citizens have blamed the cost of living crisis on the federal government’s policies of the petrol subsidy removal and floating of the naira
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has also scheduled a two-day nationwide protest over the hardship being experienced by Nigerians as well as the deteriorating security situation in the country.

Speaking in a press conference after an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union on Friday, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the protest will begin a week after the expiration of the 14 day ultimatum it issued to the Federal Government which will expire on February 23.

The planned days for the nationwide protest are February 27 and 28.
