Jobs/VacanciesHow He Got His Job by jomson(op):
A young man walked up to me one Saturday evening and asked if I was the author of the book ‘Every Nigerian can be RICH’. I answered in the affirmative. He commended the insights of the book and asked, ‘How did you come across such concepts and solutions?’ I answered him by saying ‘I long after the uncommon to solve the common’.
This caught his fancy and he wanted to know what I did for a living aside writing. ‘Ojomo Olorunfemi Olutayo is my name; I am a Certified Human Resource Practitioner and a Career Coach’. He was quick at saying ‘I am a graduate of Marketing but unemployed’. He had been searching for job for over 8months. He had sat for over seven aptitude tests and had worked the streets of Lagos to submit his CV’s. He was hoping one day he would receive a call for interview.
Getting to know Chike (not real name) was very interesting. I discovered a lot about him after our first meeting and my advice to him was centred on the premise of my observations.
Chike was a young Nigerian whose father was a store officer in a senior secondary school. His mother was a small scale business woman who sold ‘Zobo’, a Nigerian local drink. He was the third of six children. His father had a registered business name he used in supplying Soft drinks and goods to the school where he worked. Earnings from this business, his salary and little income from Chike’s mother had always being their source of livelihood for over a decade.
Chike was a vibrant young man whom I respected the first day we met. This was due to his courage to approach me and start a conversation. I saw that as strength and he admitted it. He went all out to study Marketing in school and desired to build a career for himself along that path.
My Advice
Chike had a job already but he never saw it. His conception of a job resides in a building with a signage that showed a fancy name, a desk, a chair, personal computer and an ID card hung round his neck. I advised Chike to take up employment with his mother, the woman with many years of experience in ‘Zobo’ production. What is a business? You will need to be legally recorgnized (to be registered), have what you trade in or a service you provide and have an operating point. This is the entity individuals’ work for and as a result of their skills, they grow the business. Take the individuals away and you kill the business.
Chike! Your dad has a registered business name that carries an enterprise. Adopt the name and have mother’s ‘Zobo’ business operates under this name. Create a brand name and identity for the ‘Zobo’ drink just as you were thought in school. Put your skills to work by identifying the buying market for your new product and position it for massive consumption. Identify your target market and go after them. Try to sell! He was advised to earn only on commission in order to drive himself to achieve targets.
Chike! Ensure you don’t waste your time doing nothing. Every learning, training, seminar, certification that will be of advantage to your career path, ensure you go for them.
Chike! Ensure you note down all your challenges and success stories because after one year we will sit to craft your CV.
The objective was to quickly get Chike employed and to set him far apart from his peers who were still hoping for a miracle job.
The Result
After a year and six months, Chike got a job with a beverage company in lagos and he serves as an assistant brand officer to a known brand.
Lessons
It could be rational for you to conclude this is one out of many job seekers. However, Chike is as human as any job seeker who needs a job. He had a vision, he was willing to make the sacrifice and he had the determination. Job experience is becoming very important in deciding who best fits the role. You need to derive your lessons from my sessions with Chike and decide where you will need to start from.

Where are the Jobs? A practical ‘How to’ search for unpublished jobs will be coming up on the 28th July, 2012 in Lagos.
To register, pay N 1,500 into the GTB Account: White Stone Consulting, Acct. No. 0006640645
