GATIG 2022: FCE Abeokuta defeats TASCE to win football gold as TASUED emerges overall champion

Olamide O. Abe

Federal College Education, Abeokuta on Tuesday defeated Tai Solarin College of Education 1-0 to emerge champions of the 2022 Gateway Tertiary Institution Games in the men’s football category.

Olakunle Daniel’s 48th minute goal was the difference in the final match played at the Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu.

Nine institutions participated in the 5th edition of the games but only 7 registered their team for men’s football event with the exception of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) and Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED).

On their road to final, TASCE defeated Cresent University 4-0, Ogun State College of Health Technology (OSCOHTECH) 3-0 and was held 1-1 by D.S. Adegbenro Polytechnic while FCE Abeokuta saw off Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic (AAPOLY) and I.C.T Polytechnic, Sapade 3-2 and 1-0 respectively enroute to final.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Azeez Oluseyi’s perceptive through pass split the Omu-Ijebu educators’ defence, enabling Olakunle Daniel to beat the advancing Akinbolade Opeyemi to the ball before lobbing it over him to the unguarded net.

FCE Abeokuta had already lost their talisman, Oduntan Boluwatife to injury by that point, and they were forced into a reshuffle as he was unable to continue after a heavy collision with his opponent.

The Adebayo Balogun led side continued to defend superbly and, with TASCE increasingly committing men forward, occasionally menaced on the break, was almost pegged back through a free-kick but the crossbar came to their rescue.

TASCE did, concurrently, pen FCE Abeokuta in for most of the last 5 minutes but struggled to create clear opportunities.

In the female football category, TASUED secured the much needed 4-0 win against OSCOHTECH to emerge the gold medalist.

REACTIONS

The Captain of FCE Abeokuta, Samuel Ariyibi told Made In Africa Sports that the thought of having little chance of winning the tournament was key for his team to win the keenly contested match.

“From the onset of the competition, we saw ourselves as the underdogs, the determination we got coming as underdogs was there and made us play together as a team,” he said.

Ariyibi also charged his school management to take responsibility and use this as “an antecedent” to support the team in subsequent events.

Downhearted Captain of the TASCE side, Adeolu Taiwo Oluwatosin, said the fatigue of playing too many matches played a big part in his team’s upsetting loss.

“I think we lost due to the pressures of the game and fatigue because we played 3 games yesterday.

“It was the same formation we used to defeat Cresent 4-0 yesterday. We created chances that our strikers will score on a normal day but I think their legs are weak now playing three matches yesterday and final today,” he said.

OVERALL MEDAL TABLE

TASUED emerged overall best with 21 gold, 15 silver, 8 bronze, for a total of 44 medals and went home with the biggest trophy presented by permanent secretary of Ogun State Ministry of Youths and Sports, Engineer Olayiwola Abiodun.

OOU came second with 18 gold, 8 silver, and 9 bronze, totaling 35 medals. Though, TASCE won 23 medals (2 gold, 12 silver, and 19 bronze) but was pegged to the third position by FCE Abeokuta, who gathered 22 medals (10 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze) as a result of the golden rule. When it comes to calculating a team’s standing on the official medal table, the number of golds gained rather than the actual amount of medals acquired dictates the ranking.

OSCOHTECH emerged 5th with 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze for a total of 4 medals. While AAPOLY (1 gold, 13 silver, and 11 bronze), Cresent University (1 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze), and D.S. Adegbenro Polytechnic (1 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze) finished 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively.

Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapade ended the event as the only institution with no medal in all events.

Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, Mr. Akeem Akintunde announced all the winners and the top three winning schools were excited as they went forward to receive their trophies.

Christianity EtcBATTLE OF FAITHS: Pastor Calls Out Mallam Yusuf Adepoju For An Open Air Debate by Joyoung(op): 4:46pm On Aug 21, 2020
Pastor David Adedeji, the founder of Gospel to the Nations International has called out to the Islamic lecturer and convener of Academy of Islamic propagation (ACADIP) Yusuf Adepoju to stop making a mess of the Bible.

He submitted that the clerics uses the scripture wrongly and turns it upside down. He offers to teach him the Bible and answer all the questions he can ask.

He said Christians do not make a open mess of the Quran and Muslims should avoid this as well.

When asked, He is really ready to debate some vital truths with the clerics.

Yusuf Olatunde Oladimeji Adepoju's Islamic propagation initially took off at FUTA, later to Akure township, Ondo State generally and today he has stood for what he believes in and has defended it in virtually all the states of the federation with thousands of reported converts and reverts to Islam.

He has also taken this Dawah to 15 different countries; Germany, England, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Rwanda, Morocco, Ghana etc.

EducationFCE Abeokuta Opens Hostel For Student To Pack Up But Is That All They Can Offer? by Joyoung(op): 7:56pm On Jul 30, 2020
In the face of this pandemic, the management of Federal College of Education, Abeokuta has not been so receptive of the students' concerns but they are opening all the halls of residence to allow hostelites to pack their belongings that was left behind since the school was closed on 20th March, 2020.

Entrance to the campus has been severely restricted and this unforeseen lockdown has disrupted the students' routines. Most, if not all, of the students had difficulty adjusting to living at home because they left the school luggageless with overwhelming fear and panic.

The spread of the coronavirus initially spared FCE Abeokuta, like many other Nigerian schools with zero recorded case. This luck, however, did not last as it was reported on July 3rd, 2020 that the management shut down the institution for two weeks after a medical worker at the College's Medical Centre died of COVID-19 complications while two other workers in the same department equally tested positive for the virus.

This sad event served as a dent to everyone's hope of getting back to normal life in Osiele and it's environ. It culminated with the sharp increase in the reported cases of the novel virus across the country and resulted in the general assumption that school resumption will not be anytime soon.

The opening of Hall 1, Hall 2, Hall 3, Hall 4 and CEDEP hostel for few weeks came after an outcry of limited access to clothes, materials and other learning tools but catering for students welfarism is beyond lifting of veil on the most important of the less important things in the student's life.

COVID-19 pandemic has revolutionized digital and online education nationwide but lecturers and students in Federal College of Education, Abeokuta are being left behind as they are not equipped to adapt or transition to the new methods of teaching and learning.

Unlike other institutions, the Registrar's school-closure directive did not come with any clear-cut policy measures on how to mitigate learning disruptions for students or how to address the digital divide.

It follows that the students' concerns are not paramount to the decision makers at this time as there is no well-documented response and objective strategy to mitigate the negative impact of school closures on both NCE and Degree students of Federal College of Education, Abeokuta.

While the management's efforts in the health and economic sectors must be commended, ignoring the student-oriented sector would be disastrous. As emphasised by UNESCO, temporary school closures (now looking like permanent) come with high costs, with severe impact on students.

Considering the stance of the school management, pertinent questions arose: How come the premier citadel of learning in Ogun State doesn't have the basic resources to cater for just few thousands of students affected? How come the lecturers with uninterrupted paychecks doesn't have the simplest technology to deliver live lessons or record a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) styled lessons?

Please, stay safe

Christianity EtcNigerian Pastor Speaks On Wrong Teachings Of Islam Against Christianity by Joyoung(op): 6:16pm On Jul 18, 2020
Pastor David Adedeji, in his teaching disapproves the wrong assumptions of Islam about Christianity.

In his opinion, he said "If we are ever going to live in peace and harmony, we should have religious tolerance". No one who wants to preach about his religion should attack the faith of others only to convert people to join his religion.

He as well called out to Malam Yusuf Adepoju who is the ring leader of the wrong teachings about Christianity to study the Bible very well and with the eyes of truth, not just to read the Bible for criticism. Or he should go and ask those who truly know the Bible very well.

He warns that Christianity isn't a subject of mockery and anyone should never be insulted for practicing what he believes in. However, anyone who attacks the faith of others should be warned to desist from such.

If you attack a man's faith, it is him you attack. We should ensure we love and support each other, not against one another.

He urged the government to ensure that there is religious tolerance and no religion should be allowed to persecute, insult or mock other people's faith. If we will not desist from religious bigotry, Nigerian is heading towards the wrong path.

He really poured out his heart and urged both Christians and Muslims to live in peace and harmony.

A man's faith should never be a problem to those who are around him.

According to him, he said "We are praying for Nigeria and the world at large".

PoliticsRe: The Plight Of An Event Vendor: An Open Letter To Governor Dapo Abiodun by Joyoung(op): 8:26pm On Jul 11, 2020

Must events be on only weekends?
I think that's the general norms in Nigeria
PoliticsThe Plight Of An Event Vendor: An Open Letter To Governor Dapo Abiodun by Joyoung(op): 6:48pm On Jul 11, 2020
It's no more news that the Ogun State government has extended the lockdown restrictions on Saturday and Sundays aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic for another two weeks while the five working days in the week are open practically for all for business.

Since President Buhari declared a lockdown of Lagos, Abuja and Ogun during his first address on the pandemic on March 29 to enable the country tackle the coronavirus pandemic, Ogun is the only state in Nigeria that hasn't scrap the daytime restrictions totally.

As activities in some sectors have now been up and running to save the ailing state of our economy, the enforced weekend lockdown in the state is taking its toll on what was supposed to be the start of the busy season for event vendors — a time to freshen floral bouquets, ask guests to take their seats and wrangle wayward bridesmaids into picture-perfect arrangements.

Instead these florists, event planners, photographers and officiants are staying home. So are the DJs, MCs, caterers and, most critically, the brides and grooms.

It’s been about four month since the coronavirus was declared a worldwide pandemic and celebrants throughout Nigeria began postponing their spring ceremonies en masse.

Corporate events (seminars, conferences, workshops, galas, etc.) organizers, though, are eloping, hosting events virtually on Social media, Zoom or hosting small, socially distant ceremonies in their backyards and front porches.

News reports have only focused on how celebrants can recoup costs for canceled or postponed events, but what’s been missing from the headlines is the economic toll on the hundreds of thousands of small businesses that support the event industry worldwide. Many of them are mom-and-pop organizations that are left scrambling as people are now forced to postpone, cancel, or put a halt to planning. Their livelihoods depend on event happening as scheduled, there is no Plan B.

The multi-billion naira event industry has been upended by Covid-19, with hundreds of thousands of businesses jerking to a halt. Event vendors now spend their weekends navigating the mechanics of a postponement. They're playing complicated guessing games about safe rescheduling dates; calculating how long they can last without their typical revenue stream; applying for financial assistance that they worry will never come; and thinking about how this pandemic may change events for years to come.

This prompted an open letter to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun GCFR by Ariyibi Samuel Opeoluwa, the CEO of ARISAM EXOTIC CREATIONS, an event management organisation. He has a message. Personally, I will hope the Governor listens to men like ARISAM, and makes his societal resolutions to reflect honorable character.

Asides being an event decorator and manager that uses his creativity to bring smile to the faces of people with exquisite touch of professionalism at their event, ARIYIBI SAMUEL OPEOLUWA is also an activist who is willing to go extra length to bring justice to those who deserves it. He is an undergraduate and a young philanthropist giving back to the society in his own little way.

In his bid to get involved and play active role in the development of his immediate environment, he belongs to so many youth movements like Yoruba Youth Council of Nigeria (YYCN), Ogun Youth Alliance (OYA), Progressive Youth Movements (PYM), Associate For Grassroots Sports (AFGRAS), among others.

THE LETTER:

9th July, 2020.

Prince Dapo Abiodun,
Ogun state Governor,
Government House,
Oke-mosan, Abeokuta
Ogun State.

Sir,

COVID-19: HELP, EVENT VENDORS ARE SUFFERING!!!

Your Excellency,
it has become expedient that I write you this letter.

I shall be brief and straight to the point.

I would like to commend the efforts and measures your office has put in place to curb the menace of the deadly Corona Virus, which has become such an unwanted visitor that we can't ask to leave our home.

Ogun state has become one of the most affected states because of our proximity with Lagos state; the most affected state in Nigeria. With all efforts and measures put in place, we have found out that this virus is going to be around for a while. We are now mandated to conform with the trend and move on with life.

Sir! I'm sure you know that since the lockdown has begun, roughly on the 21st of March 2020, event vendors have been at home with nothing to feed on Sir.

Some event vendors are students, who are asked to go into entrepreneurship in order to fend for themselves and not lobby for a white colar Job that is never available. We have waited patiently for the past four months for you to consider us so we can also go back to our source of livelihood but it is not forthcoming.

Most of us are living in debt already. We have not been able to feed our Family and it's really taking it toll on our wellbeing. Sir, it is understandable that the pandemic spreads rapidly, so, adequate measures need to be put in place. But Sir, the number of people we have in the markets, which you have allowed its operation, is much more than those who attend events.

We all know that the pandemic is not going to leave anytime soon, so, does that mean event vendors won't eat for as long as the pandemic thrives? With due respect, sir, i would say that if the markets can be opened to people to buy and sell, Sir, we should also be able to have events and ask hall managers to put adequate measures in place.

Event stakeholders have come together and held a virtual meeting to discuss possible ways to reduce the spread of the pandemic:
-Adequate provisions of health and security personnel to enforce the use of the safety measures
-Having a crowd of at most 70% of our hall capacity
-Provision of hand sanitizers
-Adequate register of all attendees in case there is a breakout after all our precautionary measures
-Refusal of entry into the event venue without the use of nose mask
-Adequate register of all attendees, in case there is a break out after all our precautionary measures
-Creation of parking spaces and restriction of movements into the event venue.
This and many more are the proposed measures put in place by the Event stakeholders.

We are suffering sir, and it is high time you came to our aid. We can't continue living as if we were in oblivion. We are a large part of the citizenry and we need to be equally considered, Sir.

A concerned Vendor

EducationNAUS Appoints First Ever Campus Monitoring Committee In Ogun State by Joyoung(op): 9:52am On Jul 09, 2020
The National Association of University Students, NAUS, has inaugurated its first ever executive council for Ogun State on Monday, July 6 2020, The Academia reports.

In a statement signed by the NAUS Deputy Senate President, National Treasurer and National Vice President (S.W), the appointment of the 10-man executive council in Ogun State follows the constitutional provisions 37, 25(G) (I) and (ii) of the Campus Monitoring Committee (CMC).

NAUS is the association of all university students in Nigeria and the Diaspora. The body describes itself as the defender and protector of the rights of all students in universities and other degree awarding institutions. It is also the highest decision-making body of all students studying in Nigeria's higher institution of learning from the University Cadre. The Campus Monitoring Committee (CMC) oversees the day-to-day running of the affairs of the association at the state level.

The newly ratified Ogun state leaders are: Chairman, Akorede Afeez (OOU); Vice Chairman, Edun Olubayo (FUNAAB); Secretary General, Mabifa Ameerah (TASCE-OOU); Deputy Secretary General, Ajayi Emanuel (NOUN); Treasurer, Oyekanmi Aishat (FUNAAB); Publicity Secretary, Faleti Olumide (TASUED); Director of Sports and Social, Olawoyin Adewale (FUNAAB); Director of Gender and Campus Affairs, Adelekan Olajumoke (UI FCE-ABK); Ex-Officio I, Adebesin Omolade (OOU) and Ex-Officio II, Browne Precious (TASUED)

The activities of NAUS are carried out within the framework of its constitution, these among other things are to advocate and ensure quality education in all Nigerian Universities, to collaborate with other organizations for socio-economic development in Nigeria and to constructively agitate for the welfarism of university students at all time.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Asiwaju Abdulgafar Ajibowu, while congratulating them, charged the new leaders to act diligently and never to handle their office shabbily. In the same vein, he also tasked them to stand strong and function well in the capacity they've found themselves because the progress of the association should be their top priority without allowing personal prejudices to be at the forefront.

Comrade Olajumoke Oluwabukola Adelekan (Apparels by Jhummie), a 300 level student in department of English Language at Federal College of Education, Abeokuta in affiliation with University of Ibadan (UI-FCEABK), was appointed as the Director of Gender and Campus Affairs, thereby becoming the first ever student from her institution to hold an executive position in NAUS. We interviewed her on how she will use the power of her office to improve the reputational status of her not-so-popular affiliated school and the feasibility of her constitutional assignment.

Your appointment as the Director of Gender and Campus Affairs makes you the first student from your institution to hold an executive post in NAUS: How did you feel about this appointment and how did you intend to use it for the benefit of cedep students?
Jumoke: I feel great and honored, [the appointment] will be of positive interest to Cedep students at large because it will give us the opportunity to have a say in NAUS. I intend to use it to benefit the Cedep students by making our voices be heard in NAUS.

Since one of the objectives of NAUS is to enable all students to participate fully in their Association. How did you intend to let the students of your own institution "Have a say in NAUS" and let their "Voices be heard in NAUS"?
Jumoke: My answer as regards "making our voices heard" can be viewed from various perspectives; in that my appointment can set a pace and give a pedestal for my female folks to take charge and take responsibility, this is applicable to our male counterparts too. Also, this will give us an avenue as students from an affiliate campus to bring all our activities, curricular and extracurricular, to the fore, thereby, helping us to become a force to reckon with outside the campus, CEDEP.

As a fresh chapter of the association and an "affiliated institution", it is indisputable that we will have to strive in order "become a force to be reckon with". How will you ensure the evenly distribution of national activities of NAUS such that CEDEP might also have the opportunity to play host?
Jumoke: It is a known fact that a child doesn't walk when he/she is born, it takes a gradual process. Therefore I'll endeavour to have a cordial relationship with other team members and be diligent in my duties which could therefore earn our campus the viability to play host, not forgetting the fact that the student populace will be sensitized on the need to work towards achieving that goal with me.

As a member of the first set of Ogun State Campus Monitoring Committee how will you carry out the day-to-day running of the affairs of association at the state level as stipulated by the constitution?
Jumoke: To the best of my abilities, I'll carry out my day-to-day activities of the association via the most accessible and easiest means by adhering to the Constitution.

You are the Director of Gender and Campus Affairs, it means that you are tasked with the job of defending the right of students and work without any hindrance on the basis of sex. How will you strive for gender equity and student development?
Jumoke: I will, at the best of my ability, try to strive for equity without biasness of gender and pace the action on student development through awareness and positive moves.

Any parting words to the whole students populace?
Jumoke: I want all the students to know that they have rights and responsibilities. Therefore, they should be aware that their responsibilities is important and paramount as their rights, also, students have equal rights and responsibilities without regards to the gender. This implies that, defending the rights of students will not be hindered by any gender related factor, and it won't place students of a gender above the other. This will in turn enhance students' development, in that, students, regardless of their gender will be given the opportunity of exploration. NAUS isn't for an individual or a group of people, it is for the Nigerian Students, therefore we should see it as ours. This can be another wonderful platform to have the better Nigeria we've been clamouring for. May Nigeria succeed in our lifetime. No matter who you are or where you may be, put into consideration the future which starts from today so as to make the world a better place, more and making a positive history. So much can be achieved together.

According to ThePunch, two other workers of the institution’s Medical Centre have also tested positive for the virus.

While announcing the closure of the school in a statement on Friday, July 3, 2020, the institution’s Registrar, Adedayo Adebayo said, a report carried out “attributed the cause of death of one of the medical personnel that transited to immortality lately to complications that arose from COVID-19.

SportsSpanish Women Footballers Vote To Strike Over Minimum Wage by Joyoung(op): 4:01pm On Oct 24, 2019
Almost 200 women footballers in Spain's first division have voted to strike in a disagreement over pay and conditions in the top league.

The action was supported by 93% of players employed by 16 clubs at a meeting in Madrid on Tuesday after more than a year of failed negotiations.

Clubs are proposing a minimum wage of €16,000 ($17,000; £14,000), but unions representing the players are asking for at least €20,000.

A date for the strike has not been set.

One of the unresolved issues relates to women players being recognised as full-time professional footballers.

The salaries of those on part-time contracts was also a stumbling block, the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) said. The three unions representing the players want a minimum of €12,000, but the clubs are proposing €8,000.

"We are 100% football players, every hour of the day," said Ainhoa Tirapu, vice-president of the AFE women's football committee and a goalkeeper for Athletic Bilbao and the women's national team. "But there are red lines such as bias."

In an AFE statement (in Spanish), she added: "We asked for minimum rights as workers, we have battled to achieve it.

"It's not just money - we have lowered our red lines, but nothing has been achieved. Now we can fight and we are paving the way for other players. We must not be inactive and fight for our rights."

Any strike action could have an impact on the UEFA Women's Champions League competition, including Manchester City's last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid next week.

Negotiations between the Association of Women's Football Clubs (ACFF) and unions began last October.

Interest in women's football has soared in recent years, with TV audiences and spectator numbers at matches increasing steadily.

Women players, however, are still paid far less than their male counterparts in their equivalent leagues and international competitions.

CrimeAbducted Libyan Medical Staff Freed After 12 Days by Joyoung(op): 3:40pm On Oct 24, 2019
Six medical workers abducted by a local armed group in Zintan, Libya, were freed on October 23, 2019, after 12 days of captivity, Human Rights Watch said today. The Zintan authorities should ensure that the captors are held to account.

The six medical workers were part of a larger humanitarian convoy passing through the Nafussa mountains on their way to the town of Ghadames, where they were to provide free medical care, their family members told Human Rights Watch. The family members said they believed the captors were trying to gain leverage for the release of a man imprisoned in Tripoli for undisclosed reasons.

“Nothing can justify grabbing medical workers and holding them as bargaining chips for the release of an imprisoned man,” said Eric Goldstein, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “The authorities in Zintan should do what they can to hold the captors to account to deter future attacks of this type.”

The six workers included three doctors and an anaesthetic technician from Tripoli Central Hospital, a surgical nurse from the al-Hadba General Hospital, and a surgeon from the Abu Salim Trauma Hospital.

Human Rights Watch spoke with family members of three abducted health workers and three colleagues or friends of the six medical workers by phone.

One of the participants in the convoy who witnessed the abduction and asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation told Human Rights Watch that the convoy of cars and buses included 15 medical workers who were planning to perform surgery and medical procedures as volunteers in Ghadames for patients from all over the Nafussa mountains. Some family members had joined them for the trip.

He said that four men armed with rifles, possibly Kalashnikovs or AK-47s, stopped the convoy at around 10 a.m. on October 11 at a junction at the foot of the Nafussa mountains. They put the six men in a four-wheel drive car and drove in the direction of Zintan.

“The men waiting for us at the junction appeared to know that we would be taking that route to Ghadames,” he said. “They specifically asked for medical staff who were either working at the Tripoli Central Hospital or were from the Souq el-Jomaa area of Tripoli. They disembarked six people from the convoy based on this [criteria] and took them away.”

He said the people in the convoy later found out that the abductors were seeking to free Izzedine al-Wahishi, a man from Zintan detained in Tripoli who had been arrested while he was in al-Khalil clinic, which they mistook to be the Tripoli Central Hospital as they are on the same street. The reason they also took two people from Souq el-Jomaa is that al-Wahishi is detained in a prison in Souq el-Jomaa.

The relatives of the medical workers who spoke with Human Rights Watch were not allowed to visit the captive medical workers but were able to have a few short phone calls with them. The families and colleagues said they did not know where in Zintan the six were held or their conditions of detention.

The family members and the convoy participant, who was also involved in negotiations for their release, said that the abductors demanded, as a precondition to releasing the captives, the release of al-Wahishi, who is being held by the Special Deterrence Force (SDF), an armed group affiliated with the Interior Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA), in one of Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport prisons.

The political and military authorities in Zintan are divided in their loyalties between the two rival governments that are vying for legitimacy in Libya, the internationally recognized GNA and the Interim Government based in the east. The divisions emerged before General Khalifa Hiftar, commander of the armed group known as the Libyan National Army (LNA), initiated a military campaign on April 4 against the GNA in Tripoli.

Major General Idris Madi of Zintan is the LNA commander of the Western Military Region. The LNA controls eastern Libya and parts of the south and is allied with the Interim Government. It is trying to wrest control of western Libya from the GNA. The local armed group that abducted the six medical workers is affiliated with pro-LNA groups in Zintan.

GNA authorities should clarify the legal basis for the continued detention of al-Wahishi held in Tripoli, and either charge him if they have evidence of wrongdoing or release him if they find he has committed no crime, Human Rights Watch said.

Given the current state of impunity in Libya, there is a dire need for an international inquiry, such as by an independent commission of inquiry or similar entity. The inquiry should have a mandate to impartially document abuses, identify those responsible for violations, and publicly report on the human rights situation in Libya, Human Rights Watch said. An upcoming opportunity to establish such an investigation will be during the March 2020 session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Ghassan Salameh, the UN special representative to Libya, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and several European governments have already endorsed such a move.

SportsChina To Host First Edition Of Expanded FIFA Club World Cup Tournament In 2021 by Joyoung(op): 3:15pm On Oct 24, 2019
The FIFA Council convened today in Shanghai and voted on a number of key steps for the future of international tournaments, including a unanimous decision to appoint China PR as the host of the first edition of the new FIFA Club World Cup in 2021.

The tournament will be played between June and July 2021 and the final list of venues will be decided by FIFA and the Chinese FA.

The participation model to determine the clubs that qualify from each confederation will be finalised in a consultation process between FIFA and the six confederations.

Top European clubs have previously said they will boycott the tournament.

"The new [tournament] will be a competition anyone who loves football is looking forward to," Infantino said.

Qatar will stage the final two editions of the seven-team tournament. The 2019 competition begins on 11 December, with Liverpool entering at the semi-final stage a week later.

In March, the European Club Association (ECA) expressed concern about expanding the tournament.

ECA board members, including Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, signed a letter saying they were "firmly against any potential approval of a revised CWC", adding that no ECA clubs would take part.

Speaking at a Fifa council meeting in Shanghai, Infantino said the decision to hold the tournament in China was "historic" and would further develop the club game in Asia.

"It is the first real and true World Cup where the best clubs will compete," the Swiss-Italian said.

PoliticsPutin Says Russia Exports Weapon To Many African Countries As He Pledges Support by Joyoung(op):
Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes for wider military-technical cooperation with African countries.

The event, which coincided with the Russia-Africa Economic Forum being held at Sochi in Russia, saw two Tupolev Tu-160 ‘Blackjack’ bombers accompanied by a support package of a single Antonov An-124 ‘Condor’ airlifter and Ilyushin Il-64 ‘Classic’ airliner make the 11,000 km journey from their home base in Russia to the South African Air Force (SAAF) base of Waterkloof on the outskirts of Pretoria.

“In order to strengthen the combat readiness of the African countries’ national armed forces, cooperation is underway in the military and military-technical fields. Russia has active agreements on military-technical cooperation with more than 30 countries, to which we supply a wide range of weapons and equipment,” Putin said at the Russia-Africa summit, adding that part of such supplies were being provided “on a gratuitous basis.”
Putin said “the African partners are heavily involved in military-technical forums and exercises being held by Russia, where they can see in action cutting-edge weapons and other military equipment and ways of using them.”

He mentioned last summer’s international Army-2019 games, in which 11 African countries took part.
“The number of those eager to join in keeps growing,” he stated.

Putin made special mention of personnel training.

“We are determined to go ahead with the training of military and law enforcement personnel from African countries at Russia’s special educational establishments,” Putin said, adding that currently military servicemen from 20 African countries were undergoing training at the Russian Defense Ministry’s academies.
