We cannot fully tell why the Israelites retreated, but it was a clear a supernatural force made them turn back.

It's still happening today. Some people offer strong evil sacrifices in attempt to abort prophesies.

That scripture referenced above was the people bing afraid. At this point, Israel has fallen into deep idolatry that even elisha would have ignored the king if not for the king of Judah. They had lost faith in God.

The heathen king offered his heir as a human sacrifice and suddenly something made the Israelites to retreat from him.

Ultimately, evil sacrifices can't stop prophesies, but they can alter or delay it.

This is balderdash brother. When God speaks, it comes to pass and nothing any entity can do about it unless we are talking about different God's.

Not on all occasions though.

Evil people can sometimes do the extreme as we see in 2 kings 3:27 to avert certain prophesies.

However not all prophesies can be averted.

This doesn't mean God is weak, but there is warfare in the heavens between angels who are assigned with these prophesies like we see in Daniel 10:13
