Let me clear this impression. Even though I don't know how exactly you were told. The whole idea is to put a stop to some cultural demands or traditions that usually occur in some part of north, when bride is about to be taken to church by the groomsmen or his relative(groom's). Now the elders in the bride's family will begin to impose some dues which must be settled before allowing them to go with the bride (this said dues are not part of her bride price or some monetary collections that was settled earlier, no!). However failure to comply or settle that now stops the bride from moving an inch, they begin to cause some unnecessary delay. Most of the time as a result of this delayed then they tend to delay the wedding in general. When you do the maths you will discover that from her parents home to the wedding's venue at times might be from 40min to 3hrs or even 4hrs drive. So see the wedding guest as well as the officiating ministers and the groom will now have to wait for her arrival before the commencement of the wedding. Examples, many wedding were scheduled to hold by 9am or even 10, 11am but end up taking place by 2pm, 3pm and 4pm respectively. On this note some of the churches decided to make a provision of a room within it's vicinity or pastors houses with guest room, for the bride and some of her bridal train as well as 1 or more elderly women to accompany them a day before the wedding. So as to get them prepared on time on the wedding day. So the church is only trying to get rid of such traditions. Note also down north many weddings failed to hold as a result of this said lateness.
