Art, Graphics & Video‘release’ By Adanma Nwankwo by juliambariuno(op): 3:01pm On Jul 24, 2019
Artist’s Statement
Initially, my exhibition was intended to be the documentation of the self-growth journey I have been on, but with all of the works I have done so far, I have realized that I have lost that control. Rather than coining each artwork to reflect the journey, each piece has taken me on a journey of their own- away from what I would expect and into a world that leaves me in awe. The exhibition is just as the name suggests, one of release. One that is unbound by any limitations, ideas or standard, but instead one that is birthed by free-flowing expressionism. I want people to come and experience the works, to experience each piece and step into a journey of their own. I want everyone that comes to the exhibition to leave with something, no matter how little it is. Something moving, inspiring, thought-provoking… and who knows, maybe something even I don’t see in the works.

Adanma Nwankwo
Born in England and raised in Nigeria, Adanma Nwankwo is an 18-year-old artist and designer. The inspiration for her art draws from a range of multiple influences. It is usually a mix of experiences, everything she sees, nature, and fellow artists. Hence, in the representation of her art, Adanma uses a wide array of media- ranging from dry to wet. Some of her media includes pastel, watercolor and watercolor pencil, markers, oil paint, acrylic, and a few others.

Art, Graphics & VideoBlockpasto Exhibition Opens At Mbari Uno Design Hub by juliambariuno(op): 3:10pm On Jul 04, 2019
Blockpasto: An Expression of Layered Emotions by ‘Laolu Obende has opened at The Show Room, Mbari Uno (House of Collaboration). The two week long exhibition holding at Mbari Uno located at 10C Ladoke Akintola Street, Ikeja G.R.A., features an array of paintings using the blockpasto technique.

‘’Blockpasto’’, Laolu’s second offering, foretells of his innovative feat, eclecticism, and passion for registering his imprint on the flourishing Nigerian contemporary visual art space. Blockpasto is a coinage emanating from two words, ‘’block’’ and ‘’impasto’’. Impasto is a technique used in painting; this technique allows the paint which is laid on an area of the surface to have very thick layers.

According to Mr. Laolu Obende, “Life, as we know, is changing rapidly. These changes reach the building blocks of our reality. Blocks that reflect unseen emotions and unspoken truths. The dwindling fortunes of the Nigerian economy have shaken its people, disrupting these blocks of reality and forcing us to question our long-held beliefs. I want to help shed light on those hidden realities and emotions and pull attention to the broad and colorful spectrum of the many blocks of our reality. The Blockpasto art form allows us to peer into our depths through a tapestry of varied and coordinated textures, forms and media, evoking familiar emotions within us.”

Artist, ‘Laolu Obende is a hybrid creative. Born on the 25th of August 1981 in Benin City-Nigeria, Laolu is a thorough-bred creative in every sense. He was raised in the ancient city of Ibadan by an artist father and this led to Laolu’s inclination towards creative expressions at a very young age. Laolu’s creative influences span across several disciplines while his curiosity keeps broadening his life perspectives. After his first Solo exhibition in 2009, he has painted on commissions specifically, and now combines both Painting and Advertising disciplines in full.

He has joined the likes of Ibe Ananaba, Lekan Onabanjo and a few other Contemporary Nigerian artists who refused to be swamped by the frantic nature of the advertising industry but consolidate their rapport with their palette.

BusinessMbari Uno Unveils Collaborative Design Hub In Lagos by juliambariuno(op): 10:21am On Jul 04, 2019
As part of its efforts aimed at developing human capacity using design, Nigeria's foremost collaborative design brand has officially launched its first design hub called Mbari Uno which literally translates to House of Collaboration in Ikeja G.R.A., Lagos.
Speaking at the launch, the Director, Co-founder of Mbari Uno (House of Collaboration), Mr. Chuma Anagbado explained that the hub was borne out of the need to provide local references to benchmark the design practice in Nigeria. "Mbari Uno (House of Collaboration) is prime space that will converge budding and professional designers to network the design industry, explore design opportunities, promote and establish the ‘Design practice’ in Sub- Saharan Africa. Through its proprietary Exhibitions, Workshops, and Design Activism projects, Mbari Uno will collaborate with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), schools, companies, corporations, government, and host communities to develop frameworks that will promote the culture of probing and innovation aimed at creating sustainable solutions, developing human capacity, and improving the quality of lives."
Mr. Anagbado stated that there has been a rise in tech hubs in Nigeria, while there is clearly a deficiency of African designers and an absence of a niche hub that would use design to solve indigenous problems and drive economic development. “With Design being the first stage of any manufacturing or production, there is a need to understand its necessity and pivotal role in development, hence Mbari Uno is critical to transforming our economy from consumerist to manufacturing one.” He also noted that the space which will bring design enthusiasts, emerging and established designers together to gain access to information, professional networks, experience and education while providing an ecosystem that will enable success and propel innovation in the bourgeoning design sector in Sub-Saharan Africa, is the first of many to come.
Speaking further on the functionality of the hub, The Hub Manager, Mrs. Julia Obinna, stated that the hub houses several services. “There is a Show Room, an Exhibition Space, is a combination of a concept store, reading room and a lounge. It serves as a malleable space that can be used for product and art exhibitions, a reading room, and small fire culture events such as poetry reading and digital product presentations. There is also a Kol’s Bistro & Bakery; a char-grill bistro serving locally inspired delicious cuisine, drink, coffee etc. For Multimedia enthusiasts, there is Sylvan Studios which is a Photo, Audio and Video recording and creating facility. The Work Room is an open plan co-working space that is designed to inspire collaboration and innovation. There is Aziza Design, a multidisciplinary design firm using human-centered experiences to design solutions. Lastly, Learn Room which is an auditorium styled space that can sit up to 35 persons and is used for seminars, meetings, and, trainings can all be found within the Mbari Uno House of Collaboration,” she enthused.
The launch themed, ‘OneHouse’; a redefinition of Mbari Uno’s standing ethos; to solve problems using design via collaboration and innovation, is a one-month long event which started with the opening of the Blockpasto Exhibition and a series of other activities geared towards ensuring that the public experience design with a tasteful blend of music, art, and good food.

EventsIcons With Tosin Oshinowo by juliambariuno(op): 11:11am On Jun 25, 2019
The Icons series is a talk shop that presents emerging designers and enthusiasts with an opportunity to learn from industry experts, the values and impacts of design and how to overcome the challenges that are prevalent in the African Design Industry.

In our first series, we present Tosin Oshinowo– brilliant architect, product designer, and lover of lines. Tosin Oshinowo is the architect behind the design and execution of the Maryland mall and founder of the Aso-Oke inspired lifestyle furniture brand, Ile Ila (House of Lines). Tosin’s design is as fluid in identity as it is in practice. While her architecture is usually an afrominimalist blend of clean geometric lines and mute colors, her furniture is an exciting blend of bright colors and homely contours.

Tosin Oshinowo holds a Master’s degree in Urban Design from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. She also studied architecture at the Architecture Association London. Since 2012, Tosin has been Lead-Architect at Lagos-based practice, cmDesign Atelier (cmD+A). She was a part of the team that designed a proposal for the 4th Mainland Bridge in 2008 and has acted as team-lead on projects such as the master plan and corporate head office building for Nigeria LNG in Port Harcourt.

Tosin has continually flourished in an environment that is fraught with challenges borne out of gender, environmental and socio-economic constraints. Despite this, she has been true to her design philosophy and personal identity, therefore, we consider her an icon.

So join us at the Mbari Uno Center on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2019 as Tosin Oshinowo speaks on ”Beyond the Lines: Defeating Social Creative Biases and Closing the Gender Gap in African Design”.

CareerUnpopular Opinion; Tertiary Education Is Not Near Enough by juliambariuno(op): 10:46am On Apr 15, 2019
‘’47% of Nigerian University graduates are unemployed’’
-Jobberman

Nigeria higher education system is estimated to produce up to 1.9million graduates every year. Of these staggering number, almost a million are unemployed. Employers lament that most of these graduates are ‘unemployable’, they attained knowledge in abstraction and are without the skills required to be relevant in a value-oriented labour market.

With a population of about 200million people, Nigeria has human capital as one of its most potent and unexploited resources. The brightest of this population are expected to be the educated populace but lack of quality education, absent personal motivation and limited opportunities has condemned their viable potentials to redundancy.

A large number of Nigerian youths graduate are without a concrete knowledge of their own value. Beyond the four walls of the classroom, skills must be honed and put into practice and in the face of Nigeria’s epileptic economy and chronic unemployment, it is imperative to acquire peculiar skills that would enhance personal growth and relevance.

Design as a Solution to Youth Unemployment and an Alternate Pathway to Societal Growth

Mbari Uno is a platform, a community that is proposing ‘Design’ as an efficient means of exploiting these potentials. This is a vibrant community that is willing and fully-equipped to provide practical opportunities for design education and practice. To make impactful social change, we must drive innovations, develop human capacity and build solutions that are practical and sustainable. The process to achieving this is a vivid imagination and a diverse education. In digital design, process design, space design, product designs and other design categories, the development of the self must come first.

Consequently, this is a call to Nigerians and Africans; the youthful, vibrant and imaginative; those who see an Africa beyond the rot; those who wish for an exodus from the current static dependence on western knowledge and ideas. Mbari Uno provides a vibrant ecosystem viable enough to inspire, teach and unleash the next set of societal changers and designers- all that is left is the initiative required to take advantage of this opportunity.

Therefore, take advantage of our upcoming workshops and trainings and equip yourself with the practical skills needed to remain relevant in the competitive labour market. Visit our Enterprise page to partake in programmes that are best suited for you.

DoctorNoDey- Makoko Community

‘’For every person we train…there’s one more person to save a life’’
-Chuma Anagbado, Co-founder, Mbari Uno

Empathy is an indispensable ingredient in design and ultimately results in meaningful impact in terms of real and sustainable solutions. Mbari Uno, a social enterprise positioned to use design as a tool for bettering the lives of the people in the Sub Saharan African continent. To achieve this mission, the platforms design initiatives are focused on the communities and aimed at developing solutions to everyday life issues. The DoctorNoDey, an enterprise project of Mbari Uno fully embodies this philosophy and just recently completed an edition for the riverine community of Makoko, Lagos.

Commuters along the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos would often notice a small community floating on water. This community is Makoko, often called the ‘Venice of Lagos’. However, besides the fact that it also floats on water, the lifestyle of the people of Makoko is as far from those of Venice as possibly imaginable. The primary occupation of the people of Makoko is fishing, the area is regarded as a “slum” with low-income inhabitation housing about 400,000 people according to the estimate of the local Chief. The Makoko Community, located in the middle of one of the most industrialized and commercialized state in Africa definitely deserves more attention than its being given.
Having identified the inherently fatal environmental and work hazard that challenges this community, Mbari Uno’s DoctorNoDey in collaboration with Aid2Aid International organized a First Aid Training to enlighten Makoko community members on first response techniques to emergency situations. Hallmark is the redesign of the standard training manuals and converting the module to something that can easily be understood by the target community. The overall goal is to help reduce mortality rates caused by lack of First Aid knowledge. ‘DoctorNoDey’ is a pidgin word that simply translates to ‘The Doctor is absent’. In rural communities such as Makoko, where there are no standard healthcare facilities or appropriate social amenities, basic knowledge of First Aid and Hygiene can be the difference between life and death. The means of transport and livelihood, being predominantly maritime also significantly increases the danger of drowning amidst the risk of being infected with various diseases.
The DoctorNoDey module uses experiential methods of teaching to familiarize the inhabitants of Makoko with various first aid techniques from how to dress a simple cut to Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The team from Aid2Aid, led by first Aid trainer Daniel Jerome equipped the trainees with hands-on knowledge on the proper ways of responding to various medical emergencies in the absence of a medical practitioner. This knowledge is vital in preserving lives in communities such as Makoko without adequate Medicare close by. The participants were elated and pledged to make use of their newly acquired skillset as soon as the need arises.
Mbari Uno would continually identify remote communities and take the training to them. This is done in order to liberalize knowledge and encourage communities to be involved in proffering solutions to issues that challenge them. Design is a process of building solutions and achieving results and as long as people are willing to identify problems and work together to solve them, Mbari Uno presents a viable ecosystem to help articulate and execute these ideas. In Makoko, the absence of adequate medical facilities impelled Mbari Uno in conjunction with Aid2Aid to equip the people of the community with basic but indispensable knowledge of how to preserve lives in emergency medical situations. This exemplifies Mbari Uno’s community-focused philosophy which is aimed at enhancing the quality of life and making social impact using Design

EducationA Critical Review Of Nigeria Air’s Identity Design by juliambariuno(op): 8:09pm On Mar 13, 2019
An Appraisal of Nigeria Air’s Identity Design
A testament to the value of a design work and the messages it has the potential to carry can be found in no farther a period than a few months ago when the Nigeria Super Eagles’ jersey became an international sensation. The Nike design was voted the best at the recently concluded World Cup in Russia as it showcased the ‘youthful exuberance, pride and infectious palpable charisma’ of the new generation. Its vibrant colors got its inspiration from the traditional ‘Ankara’ and the design itself echoes the World Cup of ‘94. With this still fresh in the memories of Nigerians, Nigeria Air provided another platform to showcase this cultural wealth and exuberance to the world.
The national carrier is expected to travel over 80 countries across the globe and the design of its identity had the potential of being a canvas showcasing Nigeria and announcing her creativity to the global audience. While the whole idea of reviving such a cog of the aviation sector has been lauded by the citizens, and rightfully so, the identity design of the national carrier still fails to inspire enthusiasm and command the attention a mammoth project like this one is supposed to. Why?
The Name:
In a sector dominated by privately owned airlines, Nigeria Air should be a breath of fresh air. Yet, the name suggests a modicum of mediocrity, a name that doesn’t possess the friendliness or catchiness that, say ‘Air Nigeria’, would have offered. It might have been chosen in respect to ‘Nigeria Airways’, the first project of its kind, but it shows a lack of respect for the new age and the creative identity that is expected to form a basis of any design that represents ‘Naija’. Maybe ‘Nigeria Air’ was chosen in a bid to promote a simplistic ideal but the culture and heritage of Nigeria is not a simple one. Nigeria is rooted in her principles of diversity- in culture, thoughts, language, and ways. The identity of a project that hails from a culture of such depth should be reflective of the peoples it represents.
Nigeria Air would need to be repeated more than once for a new audience to grasp what it represents. Nigeria Air would be misconstrued for ‘Nigerian Air’ or ‘Nigeria’s Air’ down the road. ‘Nigeria Air’ is not a name that would effectively represent the colloquial and increasingly popular ‘Naija’ age.
The Logo:
Most press publications has referred to the logo as a swirling ribbon in the green and white of Nigeria, however, the logo is actually an eagle with the swirling flag as its wing. The right side sees the flag curl slightly at the end representing a claw. The elaborately swiveling shape is actually a subtle depiction of The Eagle in descent- ‘A’ for creativity. However, it is not news that the logo design of any brand is basically the whole idea and concept, mission, and vision of that brand, coalesced into representative icons. The logo for ‘Nigeria Air’ looks lazy, incapable of handling the cultures it represents. There is a childishness in the cartoonish look it portrays and an overwhelming cliché in simply opting for the Eagle and the Flag, a natural mascot of Nigeria Aviation. A lack of originality is a basic flaw of this design. The design also lacks balance and seems to be all over the place, a ribbon just thrown across a white canvas.
However, of even bigger concern is the distortion of the flag. The flag is supposed to be three vertical bands of green white and green colours, however, the logo turns the flag on its head to present to us, a horizontal representation of a flag that was originally designed in a vertical form since 1959. If Germany were to do this same thing, they’ll basically be flying the flag of Belgium!
The Tagline
‘‘Bringing Nigeria Closer to the World’ is what Nigeria Air aims to achieve. Nigeria Airways is touted as a ‘social service’, a project that looks to be customer oriented. However, the tagline sounds like a political project that would be used to promote Nigeria- the state. The airline takes a tagline that lacks a personal connection to the people its created to serve. This is even more poignant when viewed in comparism to Nigeria Airways tagline ‘’…come up where the living’s beautiful‘’.
While Nigerians look forward to an airline that would be established with their needs, dreams, and aspirations in mind, Nigeria Air seems to simply have a mission of taking Nigeria to the world. This can only stem from an absence of thought, the absence of knowing a fact that only Nigerians can take Nigeria to the world. The basic responsibility of Nigeria Air should be to take Nigerians to the world and let them take it from there.
What is Nigeria’s Identity?
The promotional campaign for Nigeria Air takes the tone of representing Nigeria and Nigerians. It promises a proper depiction of the rich cultural diversity of the nation and her people. This begs the question of what exactly the identity of the state is. The use of varying shades of green in the application of the identity shows a lack of a commissioned identity for the nation’s colors. The font that is used to represent ‘Nigeria Air’ is less than palpable and the flaws in the identity of the national carrier stems from the nation’s lack of an identity in itself. A thorough development of a national identity will easily translate into any brand that is made in her name.
Dynamic Identity system would have been a more appropriate direction in the planes’ design. A model is British Airways ‘World Images’ livery designs launched in1995. A selection of the nearly 50 different tailfin designs that were commissioned as part of the “World Images” project. A fleet like that provides a space for diverse representation of the cultural values and thoughts of the Nigerian peoples. This dynamism would be represented in pallets, in colors and motifs. It would be a testament to the rich cultural essence of the newly emergent generation of the Nigerian populace. Also, it would be a showcase of an heritage that is making a return from the obscurity that Western values and thoughts has condemned it. We suggest an identity that Nigerians identify with; an expression of pro-Africanism.
The development that the Nigeria Air initiative promises is thoroughly laudable, however, the national carrier should be seen as a representation of Nigeria in all the different countries it would be taking off from and landing in. The identity should preach the creativity that is becoming synonymous with the new Nigeria. The Identity of Nigeria Air is not bad, but it is underwhelming. It does not offer a compact and concise chronicle of the vibrant and diverse culture that Nigeria and Africa boasts. While building a Nigeria that would fly, it should be given an identity that can keep up.
