HealthSupport Doctor No Dey- Agboyi Ketu by juliambariuno(op):
Doctor No Dey - Agboyi Ketu

’…(if) someone falls inside the water, no one has the idea of dressing or doing anything…sometimes, before they take the person to the hospital, the person will give up. But with this, it will help the community’’
-Dorcas Agi, Trainee

Agboyi Ketu is a rural community located in the city of Lagos, Nigeria at the coastal cusp of Ogun state, surrounded by water. Agboyi Ketu residents’ primary source of survival is fishing and trading in sea foods and since there is no linking bridge between the community and other communities, residents only move around in canoes. This exposes them to high risks of falling into the water and possibly drowning or sustaining water related injuries and this is mostly prevalent during the rainy season. The community lacks basic social amenities like roads, portable water, secondary schools and essential health care facilities, they therefore rely on traditional medical health care. Understanding that trado-medical health care and the lack of medical health care facilities poses a major challenge for such riverine communities.

BusinessMbari Uno Launches 0pen Innovation Platform For Social Well-being by juliambariuno(op): 11:44am On Jul 01, 2020
Mbari Uno launches 0pen Innovation Platform to Positively Impact Social Well-being.

Mbari Uno (House of Collaboration) a design hub in Lagos has officially launched its open innovation platform, the Mbari Uno Forum (MUF); a nonprofit organization. The forum is a Collective of designers and professionals using design thinking rooted in indigenous realities to develop culture, products and services that solve social problems in Africa. The group is set to begin its first innovation cycle in the Public Health sector in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 3: Health & Wellbeing.
Speaking on the launch, Mr. Chuma Anagbado, one of the founders of Mbari Uno, said that
“the forum is our solution to the numerous challenges we face as a people and the time has come for us to look inwards and take charge of our life and destinies. It is time for Africans to solve the problems of Africa. The Mbari Uno Forum provides the platform for meaningful collaboration and pooling of skills by not just African professionals but people that bear the brunt of the problems – all of us.”
The Covid19 pandemic engulfing the world has brought to fore the pathetic state of health infrastructure in Nigeria and by extension Africa. There have been predictions that we would be the hardest hit as a result of our weak economies and deficient health infrastructure. Reiterating the organization’s objective, Mr. Anagbado explained that the first innovation cycle of MUF will focus on SDG goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing. “We have chosen this goal in response to the unprecedented Covid19 pandemic and the attendant need to urgently address the quality of public health care in our communities. We will be challenging ourselves on ways to improve public health care quality, accessibility, & infrastructure in Nigeria, by identifying gaps and needs in public health care delivery.”
The first innovation cycle would begin this July and run through to September 2020. At the end of each cycle, a detailed report of the Collective’s activities and solutions birthed will be published and an exhibition held within the premises of the Mbari Uno. This exhibition is expected to attract investors, policy makers, captains of industry, agencies and government functionaries in attendance. The group plans to hold an annual design summit that would be a round-up of all the developments from its quarterly innovation cycles.

BusinessCoronavirus: How Africans Are Innovating Ways To Win by juliambariuno(op): 10:57am On May 18, 2020
The world changed in the first quarter of 2020 as the unprecedented effect of the Coronavirus and its domino effect usurped normalcy in every sector of our daily lives. Africa, the earth’s second-largest continent and one of her most populated and under-developed watched the world try to contain the deadly respiratory disease. By the time Nigeria announced her first case on the 28th of February, 2020- the first in sub-Saharan Africa- the virus was already termed a ‘pandemic’ by the World Health Organization.

With the fragility of her economies and the frailty of her health sector, the threat posed by the Coronavirus to Africa is ‘considerable’, according to the WHO. With over 32,000 confirmed cases as at the time of writing this article, many nations in Africa are taking steps to stem the spread of the virus and flatten the curve. While the efforts of the government to battle the pandemic has been commendable so far, there are individuals and groups who have taken it upon themselves to use design as a weapon of curbing the coronavirus. Enterprises are leveraging on innovative tech, design, and research to disseminate information, prevent the spread, and save lives. For the scope of this article, we would be examining three impressive innovations developed in Africa, by Africans, in response to this raging pandemic.

EducationWhy Do We Need To Redesign Education In Nigeria by juliambariuno(op): 2:43am On Apr 29, 2020
One of the earliest social structure inherited by Nigeria in her post- colonial times is her educational system. Forged from the white man’s idea of a manifest destiny, the drive to civilize Africa meant that her citizens must be taught how to basically read, write, speak , and do sums. This responsibility fell on the government of the day during the post-colonial era. Arguably, the educational sector was handed over to them in its earliest stage of development and instituted in the constitution, it was promptly added to the concurrent list- made a responsibility of the state and local governments- as the federal government supposedly had matters of more importance to attend to.

BusinessStudio Inkline’s Origami Architecture Suggests A Stunning Alternative by juliambariuno(op): 1:19am On Apr 29, 2020
A drone shot of Leigh Street in the Yaba area of Lagos, Nigeria will make for stunning viewing for any enthusiast of architecture. Set on a landmass of 233sqm in the area, Studio Inkline; a creative composition of Niyi Opebiyi and his team at Inkline Design Studio stands as a visual artistic contrast to the generic-looking structures that surround it.

Evocative of the Origami, a paper-folding technique that was founded in Japan as far back as the nineteenth century, Studio Inkline is an architectural masterpiece that carefully incorporates Japanese aesthetics and style with local materials and methods. The building, with its impressive undulating black roof and mural infused façade, houses the Inkline Design Studio. Largely built with wood and clad in cement, the structure is pleasingly curvilinear, looks lightweight and curiously, fits spectacularly into a topography it appears to dictate for itself.

BusinessThe Hero’s New Cape: A Review Of Hero Lager’s New Design by juliambariuno(op): 1:10am On Apr 29, 2020
Designing the bottle of Mothercare‘s feeding range in 2011, Daniel Weil deviated from the advances of technology and engineering and found his muse in people and symbolism. He said; ‘to design a bottle, I needed to understand the development of parenting…”. Similarly, Hero Lager as a brand is a romantic- a birth child of historical symbolism. It is proudly allied, bold in speech and in sentiment, fluent in the language of the people it favors.

Brewed in the Southeastern city of Onitsha, the story of this proud alignment began in 2012 and even before then. In the wake of the burial of Odumegwu Ojukwu, the leader of the Republic of Biafra in 2011, a burgeoning brewery, 20 miles from his hometown was invested in by SAB Miller PLC. Upon opening in 2012, the flagship product of this brewery was named ‘Hero’. A subtle homage to Ojukwu perhaps, but this allusion to the regional hero was further emboldened by the logo of Hero lager; a rising sun, adorned with the significant tricolor of red, black, and green which were the colors of the Biafran flag. Perhaps the greatest indicator of its acceptance was the name it was christened on the streets- Ompa!, meaning ‘my father’.

LiteratureAnthills Of The Savannah by juliambariuno(op):
LEARNING FROM AND NOT REPEATING HISTORY

Mbari Uno book Club presents Anthills of the Savannah, a classic of one of Nigeria’s greatest ever novelist and storyteller, Chinua Achebe. A resounding story, Anthills of the Savannah remains relevant as it weaves our history into a brilliant narrative that urges us to remember our past so that we would not repeat them.

In the fictional West African nation of Kangan, newly independent of British rule, the hopes and dreams of democracy have been quashed by a fierce military dictatorship. Chris Oriko is a member of the president’s cabinet for life, and one of the leader’s oldest friends. When the president is charged with censoring the opportunistic editor of the state-run newspaper–another childhood friend–Chris’s loyalty and ideology are put to the test. The fate of Kangan hangs in the balance as tensions rise and a devious plot is set in motion to silence a firebrand critic.

Reviews
“A vision of social change that strikes us with the force of prophecy” —USA Today

”Anthills of the Savannah (1987), Achebe’s candid vision of contemporary African politics, is a powerful fusion of angry voices. It continues the journey that Achebe began with his earlier novels, tracing the history of modern Africa through colonialism and beyond, and is a work ultimately filled with hope” —Goodreads

“Achebe has written a story that sidesteps both ideologies of the African experience and political agendas, in order to lead us to a deeply human universal wisdom.” —Washington Post Book World

“Anthills Of The Savannah has wonderful satiric moments and resounds with big African laughter.” —The New York Review Of Books

Through meticulous hyperrealist technique, he constructs arresting images rich with deft use of form and space. Cleverly, his illustrations regularly feature obscure portraits of everyday people peeking through the ripped paper, elevating and situating Africans in the global context. Weighty issues like gender equality, African cultures, global politics, Black power, and most recently knife-crime come to the conversation by way of his mind-boggling creation.

Artist Statement

Life deals with us in strokes, and we react differently. Perhaps it’s the reason for the expression; different strokes for different folks. These strokes tell intriguing stories of toils, joy, failures, success, and motivations etc. For some, it seems like a straight road with a few bumps here and there; for others, it’s a vicious circle. Of course, we don’t get to choose life’s strokes but we have what it takes to make every crooked path straight.

IN-LINE unravels twisted stories buried in strokes. It reveals words hidden behind bars, and how these words can serve as motivations towards getting our lives in order.

These lines speak of struggles. Humans often desire that a bad situation take a new turn. And for this reason, they sometimes wish for a stroke of luck. However, things only fall in line when we understand the movement of strokes. The question is, can we read between the lines?
