You understand some of the complications the border guard face. Ukrainians citizens have 3 months free visa access to the EU/Schengen ordinarily. They will have no long process to clean in.

But non-EU in Ukraine have no free-visa access to Schengen region. Ordinarily, they were supposed to be heavily scrutinized to be stamped in. I guess the border guards were initially confused.
