Kamarudeen Ogundele , Ado Ekiti
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose ,
has described the non- extension of
invitation to President Muhammadu
Buhari to attend the Donald Trump ’ s
inauguration as a clear signal that the
president does not enjoy
international relevance any more.
The governor said that the
development was a very clear signal
that Buhari’s government would not
enjoy tangible support from the new
US government.
Fayose , according to a statement by
his Special Assistant on Public
Communication and New Media , Mr.
Lere Olayinka, on Thursday said
there is no doubt that Buhari is not in
the good books of the incoming US
government .
He argued that Buhari’s frequent visit
to US during Obama administration
and the romance was due to the tacit
support given to Buhari by Obama to
win the 2015 election with deception.
He said , “ With Obama’ s role in the
emergence of President Buhari, it can
be said that he (Obama) is a member
of the APC in the diaspora.”
” In an important event like this in
US , our president will be missing in
action . ”
The governor wondered why the same
president, who was a regular visitor
to the US under Obama , was today
not part of the historic inauguration
of a new administration .
“ No doubt , something is
fundamentally wrong because if there
is hope of a future relationship
between President Buhari and the
new US President, they would have
been celebrating his inauguration and
would not have allowed Nigerians to
hear any other news apart from
Buhari going to America .
“ Obviously , Buhari’s junketing to US
that gulped $ 1 m per trip , has come to
an inglorious end ,” he said .
The governor , who congratulated
Trump for winning against all odds,
like he (Fayose ) won his own election
in Ekiti in 2014 , appealed to the new
American president to do everything
possible to save Nigeria from the
wanton killings and horrid human
rights abuses of the Buhari
administration .
He enjoined Trump to use his good
offices to look into the daily killings
in Nigeria particularly in Southern
Kaduna where over 1 ,000 people
were slaughtered like goats and
buried in mass graves .
Fayose reiterated , “ The Southern
Kaduna killings is a clear case of
genocide that must be thoroughly
investigated and unraveled .
“ To make matters worse was the
bombing of the Internally Displaced
Persons camp by the military in
desperation to cover up the
corruption and mismanagement of
affairs in the camp .
” We appeal to Trump to ensure that
the voice of the opposition is not
silenced in this country .
“ We however appreciate the non
invitation of Buhari because that will
give him the much needed
opportunity to face the problems he
inflicted on Nigeria , especially the
IDP bombing , which left over 100
hapless Nigerians dead ,” he added . |

The little boy who was left for dead in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State after being branded a witch has begun his recovery after he was saved by Danish aid worker, Anja Ringgren Lovén. Photos of the boy, named Hope, being fed a drink of water by Lovén went viral in early February. The aid worker has since posted photos of Hope looking much healthier. Lovén wrote posted a photo of Hope on Facebook revealing that he had gained weight and would hopefully begin talking when he left the hospital to to join the other children in an orphanage run by charitable organisation. "Hope is getting so much better. Already gaining a lot of weight and looking so much more healthy. Now we only need him to talk. But that will come naturally when he is out of the hospital and starting his life among all our children. Children become stronger together" she wrote. Farmers and merchants of tomato in Katsina State are seriously affected by glut of the produce in recent weeks, forcing its price to crash with few buyers in sight. Although its perishable nature and lack of processing industries usually make tomato farmers experience glut at least once in a year, this year seems to be the worst, according to the farmers. Hamza Tsalha, a tomato farmer in Mairuwa, Faskari local government area, said the situation is very disturbing as they are recording loses daily in the past three weeks. “We are really in a sorry state going by what is happening in tomato markets in recent weeks. Many of us have converted the proceeds of our rainy season farming to irrigation and now we lost everything. Our tomato is fresh and healthy this year as we recorded no pest attack but the problem is the glut which makes its price to drop to N300 from N5, 000 per big basket,” said Hamza. He further attributed the unfortunate situation to the influx of many farmers into tomato farming in the state this year. “Last year, tomato farmers in this state made a lot of profit, a development that enticed many farmers into irrigation farming this year and God so kind, we are yet to record any pest attack hence our markets are saturated with the produce,” he said. Similarly, a farmer in Danja LGA, Mal Hamidu Sama’ila, said unless government and the private sector timely intervene with the provision of local tomato processing factories, irrigation farmers will continue to wallow in glut, resulting to dwindling market price of the produce. “Tomato farming has gradually grown beyond domestic consumption. Government, especially now that it is giving agriculture its deserved priority, should partner with the private sector in the provision of tomato processing factories to contain the volumes of tomato being cultivated yearly,” Mal Hamidu said. He also expressed strong feelings on how small scale farmers are helplessly losing the resources they put into tomato farming this year; adding that the only favour that government can do for a farmer is to find him an avenue where he can sell his farm produce at reasonable price, especially perishable crops like tomato. Yakubu Mohammed is a tomato merchant who transports the produce to Onitsha, Anambra State, and he said the situation is also not encouraging in the eastern markets as tomato from every angle of the country is flooding the markets, making its price to fall drastically. “The glut has also spread to eastern markets, forcing the market demand of the produce to fall flat. Most of the suppliers are either from Katsina, Kano or Kaduna states and they recorded a bumper harvest of the produce this year that superseded its market demand. The best price of a basket of tomato in Onitsha as at last week was N3, 000 if you subtract the cost of transportation, offloading, tax and other dues you will see that the profit is lean if there will be any,” Yakubu Mohammed said. Daily Trust observed that tomato farmers have since resorted to preserving the produce traditionally by drying it in the sun for future sales. Large fields in Kokami tomato market are reserved for drying tomato where hundreds of bags are packaged daily. dailytrust
