ireneony: nawa for u ooo... It is becos of the hurricane and earth that often occur that's y they build their homes with woods I dont know for them. When I asked someone-he said its because building a house with cement will be too expensive. All these wooden houses sell for like equivalent of 60 million naira to 100 million naira. And those are the average houses ( although 99% is mortgage). So i can imagine maybe cement house will be like 1 billion in naira money. |

8th, 9th, 10th and 11th :Park, Park everywhere. Every city I went to had several parks. Imagine-5 parks in Ikeja. 5 in Ogba. 5 in Agege. Large parks where people can play football, tennis and little kids can play on swings and many fancy mechanisms. Wont crime reduce? Wont young boys exert there energy more on sporting activities. PDP and APC. APGA and Fresh Part-you people need to do meeting fast fast. We now know why you send your children overseas and go and your medical check up and vacation in London and New York. Even the air at the airport is enough to cure many sicknesses.

5th, 6th, 7th Pic: Some houses in a middle class neighbourhood. Most of the people are working people-getting paid per hour or middle level salaries. Notice that there is no fence. Looking back now-its possible that all the fences we have in Nigeria may be doing more harm than good. If robbers get into a house in Lagos-how will people know when the fence is so high!

Originalsly: Hmmmm.....OP.....as a travelling man around South Dakota....how long often do you run into Black people period?....looking at the pics that place looks desolate.... you must not be from Lagos or boredom and quietness would've already killed you! Not at all. Most of the pictures posted so far are of my travels through the state of Wisconsin. But -where I have been staying is in the suburbs-it is quite. Very different from the noise in Ikeja! Black people-there are a lot especially in the cities-although much less than places on the East Coast. Good thriving Nigerian and African community at the places I have visited. 1st & 2nd pic: That neighbourhood is in a ghetto in near city. I always thought that ghetto was a dirty nasty place like SOME places in Ajegunle or Oshodi-but its seems ghetto is mainly composed of low income and government subsidized housing where most poorblacks live. There is usually lots of crime-but my investigation is that most of this crime is between people who know each other (gang members). But these ghettos have 24 hours light, running water, and good houses. Some of the houses would cost up to $1000 or more as rent or mortage-but many of those in the ghettos just pay a fraction and the government pays the rest. My brothers and sisters-there is order in this land! This ghetto to me is better than my oga's neigbourhood in Ikoyi! 3rd & 4th: Morning breakfast in Mcdonalds . Showing off Nairaland.

Because, the system of education we run in Africa is still the same we inherited from colonial Britain. The education was originally meant to keep us dumb, unfortunately, it's still achieving it's purpose. It only allow the creation of follow-follow leaders and follow-follow citizens. So, we see airplanes fly and we even enter it, but we don't want to know how it was made. We see ships travel on water, but we don't care how it was built. All we want is buy the latest Prado jeeps, but we don't care about how it was made.
Our education system disables the African mind to want to explore scientifically, and it was intentionally made that way by Britain. Same for Francophone African countries.
Africa cannot develop until education is restructured and science taught in our native languages across Africa to enable children have inquisitive minds; like start building robots even from primary schools.
Africa cannot develop without investment in grassroots science. You know I never considered that angle. Interesting "Education designed to keep people dumb" |

CFCman: - Here, in the US, public colleges and universities are required by law to make their campuses voter-registration areas. In fact, my alma mater was a polling unit in the 2012 elections.
- Smoking is generally prohibited in restaurants
- Presidential nominees only campaign in 8-11 states during the general election. Those states are referred to as "swing states".
- In most states, patrons cannot touch strippers. Only handshakes/hugs are allowed. Most counties/cities and states go to the extent of legislating the type of outfits strippers should wear on the job.
- The federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour. Some states (and cities) have a higher minimum wage. California's minimum wage is presently $10/hour, which will increase to $15/hour in 6 years time.
- Full time work, in general, is no less than 40hrs per week. It would surprise you to know that some highly skilled professionals such as lawyers, doctors, investment bankers etc work up to 60 hours per week. Strippers!!! I think California is where @mikkyangel is- i need to go and bow to the boss! |

CFCman: OP, Welcome to the US. Most of your observations are spot-on, especially the church-going part and work.
-If you clock-in for work, you must be actually working. No time for dulling or chatting on the phone except during your lunch, or break. For minimum wage workers, lunch usually lasts for 30 mins if the shift is more than 5 hours. Breaks last for 15 minutes.
-Salaried workers get 1hr+ for lunch, in addition to breaks.
-I'd go out on a limb and say only 30% of people in my county go to church on Sundays. There is no traffic on the freeways on Sunday mornings. And I also noticed there are no billboards advertising a church.
-In the US, if your home electronic appliances develop a fault, it's cheaper and more convenient to buy a new one.
-I'm yet to see a cobbler (shoe maker) here. If there is a tear in your shoe or sandal, you simply by a new one.
-California law mandates restaurants to serve a free plastic cup of water to anyone that requests for it.
-No one can be tried twice for the same crime, due to the American constitution's prohibition of "double jeopardy". Interesting. You are right. I have been getting some free and cheap electronics myself. If my landlord wife-Mama Comfort ask wetin I bring am-i fit dash am one of them. |

coolbreeze44: oooh, I never knew South Dakota is that big,no problem! I will keep you posted though. America is big o! South Dakota (77,184 mi²) is about one quarter the size of Nigeria ( 356,669 mi²) with just about 0.5% the population. 853,175 compared to 178,000,000. Thats like the size of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Edo, Delta. |

dustydee: Hi, how do you intend to get your green card? or are you going to be shuttling between Nigeria and the US every 6 months? won't that raise suspicion of the border agents? Thanks. Green card? I have a plan for that. But it will take some time. Suspicion? No-My US Visa is study/work related ( will explain later)-so its expected that I will be coming in and out. |
