A worrying new statistics has revealed that in recent years, many people are dying from taking selfies. So the next time you switch into selfie mood and think of using your selfie stick, think of these unfortunate individuals who have died from just trying to take selfies.

1. Xenia Ignatyeva

Starting our list of 10 heart-breaking deaths while taking selfies at number 1 is Russian teenager Xenia Ignatyeva. This daredevil young lady succumbed to death while posing for selfie on the edge of a high-end building. As per reports, she mishandled the selfie stick which led to her losing her balance and falling down from a height of two hundred feet. What is even more surprising is that she died before hitting the ground as she was electrocuted through the live wires on her way down.

2. The Polish Couple

Coming in at number 2 on our list next is a Polish couple who met with an untimely demise in 2014 due to a selfie. While taking a selfie from the rocky edge in Cabo da Roca in western Portugal, the couple crossed a safety barrier so that they could reach the cliff’s edge. They somehow lost their balance in the prohibited area and fell hundreds of feet to death. What is even tragic is the fact that they died as their two children, aged 5 and 6, watched them in agony.

3. Japanese Tourist

Coming in at number 3 on our list is the unfortunate death of a Japanese tourist in 2015 at one of the seven wonders of the world – The Taj Mahal in Agra, India. As per reports, the man was taking a selfie while posing on the steps of the monument when the disaster took place. He lost his balance and toppled down the steps and died of head injuries. Well, we hope our readers learn something from this and prioritise their safety over everything.

4. Chinese Man

At number 4 on our list comes a Chinese man, who is being referred to as Mr. Chen. Found dead at the bottom of a ravine near a waterfall in Zhejiang in Eastern China in 2015, his body was accompanied with a mobile phone and a selfie stick. It has been speculated from the photographs found in his phone that he lost his footing and slipped down to his death while taking a selfie.

5. Philippine School Girl

Number 5 on our list is a 14-year-old student from Philippines named Marie Rocello. She met her demise while taking a selfie at the edge of the staircase between the second and third floor of her school, the Rizal High School in Pasig city. Time magazine has named Philippines as the “World’s Selfie Capital” and now the disadvantages of getting too much caught up in selfies is seen in the country. Rocello suffered a sharp blow to her head and one of her rib broke which pierced into her kidney, resulting in her death.

6. Russian Girl

Next up at number 6 on our list is the death of a 21-year-old Russian woman. A graduate of the Russian State University of Tourism and Services Studies, she was on her way to take a selfie from a bridge which provided an excellent view. But sadly, she slipped and fell off from the bridge, which resulted in her death. The incident took place in 2015 in front of the Moscow International Business Centre.

7. Romanian teen who burst into flames after touching a live wire while taking selfie.

In May 2015, a Romanian teenager burst into flames after accidentally touching a live wire while attempting to take the "ultimate selfie" on the roof of a train.

Anna Ursu,18, and a friend went to a train station in the town of Iasi to take a "special selfie" that she intended to post on Facebook. As she lay on top of a train and stuck one of her legs in the air, an electrical field surrounding the overhead cables sent 27,000 volts zapping through her body, causing her to burst into flames.
Despite the best efforts of a passer-by to save her, the 18-year-old later died in a hospital with burns to 50 per cent of her body.

8. The Mexican man who of gunshot.

Playing with guns is dangerous, but taking selfies with guns can kill you. In 2014, a Mexican man died after taking a selfie when the gun he was using as a prop discharged and mortally wounded him. The victim was identified as 21-year-old Oscar Otero Aguilar. He was a fan of taking elaborate selfies if his Facebook page was any indication. He's seen posing in front of fancy cars, expensive motorcycles, and pretty women.

According to the police, the young man was “waving it around” while trying to take the picture. He died on his way to the hospital.


9. Girl fell off a bridge onto concrete platform.

Medical student Sylwia Rajchel, 23 years old, fell 15 feet onto a concrete platform after trying to take a picture on the ledge of the Puente de Triana Bridge in the city of Seville. Her injuries ultimately resulted in her death.


10. Boy fell off a building taking an "extreme selfie".

A 17-year-old boy, Andrey R who was a student fell off a ninth-floor rooftop in Vologda Russia, after trying to take an 'extreme selfie' on a ninth-floor rooftop with his friend. He became "Instagram famous" for his daring stunts and jaw-dropping selfies.


11. The bride to be who was killed while trying to take a selfie.

Bride-to-be Colette Moreno, 26, died in a car crash in June 2014, on her way to her bachelorette party.

She was in the passenger seat when the car driven by her friend collided with an oncoming vehicle. Ashley M. Theobald said she was trying to pass a semi whose exhaust fumes were causing Moreno to have an asthmatic reaction.

She left behind her five-year-old son and her devastated fiance, Jesse Arcobasso.


12. The teen who died after falling from the bathroom door while attempting to take.

The popular trend that goes by the name #SelfieOlympics claimed the life of 18-year-old Oscar Reyes. On January 2, 2015 the teenager snapped a photo of himself in a Sponge Bob costume and uploaded it to Facebook. The photo generated over 200 likes.

Friends of Oscar say that amount of likes motivated him to try and snap a picture he described to friends as “Crazy AF (as Bleep)." Investigators say he was in his mother's restroom on January 3rd around 2AM when he fell off the door and injured his head. He died from excessive bleeding. A Facebook page was later created to remember the young man.

Recently alot of people have been taking incredible risks so as to get the perfect and exciting selfie. Posing dangerously on cliff edges, taking a selfie while driving and posing in other risky position or location to take selfies have proven fatal for several people.

Remember, no matter how good you look on your selfie, a picture of your dead face will never bring any joy to your loved ones. Be careful while taking selfies. You have only one life to live. Live it safely.
