Sunday Aborisade The Senate on Wednesday rejected a prayer seeking the probe of public officers involved in the alleged inflation of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Second Runway contract to the tune of N63.5bn. But the upper chamber queried the upward review of the contract, describing it as an attempt to ‘steal and rape’ Nigerians of the country’s common patrimony, even as it agreed that the construction of second runway was a matter of urgency. The Senate, however, urged the Federal Government to ensure that due process and diligence were followed in the award of a fresh contract. The federal lawmakers made the resolutions while deliberating on a motion by Senator Dino Melaye, APC, Kogi West. The motion was titled, “The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, Second Runway- Contract.” An additional prayer specifically demanding severe punishment for those behind the inflation of the contract, moved by Senator Joshua Dariye (PDP, Plateau South), was unanimously rejected by the upper chamber. The Senate called on the Federal Government to drastically reduce what it termed as the unrealistic cost of the project and to monitor the contract award process. Melaye had noted that the contract for the construction of the Abuja Airport Second Runway was cancelled by the last administration after allegations of over inflation of contracts was established. He also said that the contract was awarded by the Federal Executive Council at the cost of N64bn after ratification by the Bureau for Public Procurement. He said the need for the construction of a second runway was because existing one was bad and inadequate. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in his remark, urged the government to put in motion necessary machinery to construct a better runway at the Abuja International Airport just as he said every process in awarding the contract must follow due process. |

An army officer, Captain Garba Sani, told the Rivers State Governorship Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Wednesday that he never saw where election was conducted in Tai Local Government Area where he and his other men were deployed to maintain peace and order on April 11, 2015, the day the poll was scheduled to hold. The Mohammed Ambrosa-led tribunal overruled the objection by Governor Nyesom Wike, his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, before Sani was allowed to give his oral evidence on Wednesday. Sani, a subpoenaed witness, who said he led 37 other soldiers on a patrol of the entire Tai, which is one of the 23 local government areas in Rivers State, said he appeared before the tribunal on the directive of army authorities. ADVERTISEMENT The soldier, who is of the Bori Camp, Army Barracks in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, said he received the directive of the army authorities through the Directorate, Legal, of the Nigerian Army, after his unit received “a signal” about the subpoena served on the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Tukur Buratai. The subpoena served on the Chief of Army Staff was obtained upon a request by the petitioners – the All Progressives Congress and its candidate in the April 11 poll, Dr. Dakuku Peterside – who are challenging the declaration of Governor Wike as the winner of the election. The soldier, led in evidence by the petitioners’ counsel, Chief Akin Olujinmi (SAN), said his team’s patrol started at about 6pm on April 10 into the night and up till the election date. |

Abuja - Mr Aaron Kaase, a staff of the Police Service Commission, who accused the commission’s Chairman, Mr Mike Okiro, of embezzling N275 million, has urged Nigerians to be bold to expose corrupt practices. Kaase spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja. NAN recalls Kaase had petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences (ICPC) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the alleged fraud. Asked what prompted him to petition against Okiro, he said he did that because somebody needed to speak up against corruption. "The first thing is to set the record straight. Because of fear, because of victimisation, because of the fear of death, Nigerians do not speak out. "This is a case of deliberate misrepresentation of fact from Mr Okiro, in order to commit fraud. Also read: Okiro reacts to N275 million fraud allegation "Okiro wrote to the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), asking for approval, selective tendering to train 200 of our staff in Lagos,’’ he said. According to him, the commission does not have an office in Lagos and in the South-West. He also said that part of the N350 million requested from the BPP was to train the commission’s 200 staff in Kano and 500 staff in Abuja. Kaase, who is currently on suspension from the commission, said the commission has only eight people in Kano, while its entire staff strength nationwide is 382. "Now when a man that is supposed to superintend over the police is set out deliberately to defraud the government, using false information and we all keep quiet? "Somebody has to speak out. I spoke out, I wrote a petition, I put my name, my staff number and I put my telephone number,’’ he said. On claim by Okiro that he connived with a journalist to blackmail him with the allegation to collect N10 million, Kaase described the claim as untrue. "That is completely false. I will never blackmail him, why will I blackmail him. "Why is he thinking somebody has to blackmail him because there is information against him? I have never blackmail anybody,’’ he said. He also debunk claimed by the commission’s chairman that he wanted to share the money with journalist to fund his wedding in May, adding he had already married with four children. It will be recalled that Okiro addressed newsmen on Monday to deny the allegation, adding that it was an attempt to blackmail him by the duo to collect the money. The ICPC had quizzed Okiro on June 4 over the alleged fraud. - NAN |
