Mateo Kovacic has joined the Blues from Real Madrid on a season-long loan deal. The 24-year-old Croatian international arrives with experience having featured regularly in Serie A, La Liga, the Champions League and at international level. He played five games during Croatia’s run to the World Cup final this summer. Upon arriving at Stamford Bridge, Kovacic said: ‘I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling. I will try to do my best for this club. It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season.’ Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: ‘We are very happy to welcome Mateo to the Chelsea family. He is a perfect fit for us this season, his style is well suited to how Maurizio wants to play and we are sure he will prove to be a valuable asset for the club.’ Kovacic is a ball-playing central midfielder who thrives on quick combinations. He combines hard work with skill in possession and penetrative passing. He can also play anywhere across the midfield. Kovacic caught the eye from a very early age, and after joining Dinamo Zagreb’s academy as a teenager, it wasn’t long before he had established himself in their first team. He scored on his senior debut aged 16 years and 198 days, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Croatian top flight in the process. He got his first taste of elite European football during his two-and-a-half years in Dinamo’s first team, and he remains the second-youngest player to have ever scored in the Champions League after netting against Lyon at just 17. Kovacic left Dinamo for Inter Milan in January 2013 having won a pair of league and cup doubles with the Croatian giants. His performances at such a tender age, including in the Champions League, had made him one of the hottest properties in Europe. His first half-season at Inter was so impressive he forced his way into the starting XI and he picked up the club’s young player of the year award. After two more seasons at the San Siro, Real Madrid came calling in the summer of 2015 and with the Nerazzurri in financial difficulty, they had little choice but to sell one of their star assets. Kovacic headed to the Spanish capital having made almost 100 appearances in Italy. He had just turned 21. With fierce competition for places at Real Madrid, Kovacic has more often than not featured off the bench during his time at the Bernabeu. Despite that, he has maintained regular playing time and has accumulated over 100 appearances during his three years with Real, including in the Champions League, which Real Madrid have won every season since Kovacic joined. Among his other honours won are a La Liga title and a Spanish Cup. He already has 46 international appearances to his name since debuting in 2013, and along with playing his part this summer as Croatia entered unchartered territory, he started each of their games at the World Cup in Brazil four years ago. NEWS KEPA ARRIVES AT CHELSEA Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao. The 23-year-old Spanish international goalkeeper arrives ahead of the new Premier League season having signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Kepa, who has played over 100 career league games, has solid experience at the highest level having made more than 50 appearances in La Liga, his quality earning him a call-up to the Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia. Upon completing his move to Chelsea, he said: ‘It’s a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life. 'So many things attracted me to the club, all the titles the club has won, the other players, the city, the English Premier League. It’s an accumulation of things, and I am very glad Chelsea has decided to trust me and to take me in as well.’ Director Marina Granovskaia added: ‘Kepa is a talent we have admired for a long time and we are extremely excited about his arrival. He has already demonstrated fantastic quality and consistency and will be a big part of any success Chelsea have in the coming years. His long-term contract reflects the belief we have in him and we look ahead to the coming seasons with an enormous sense of optimism.’ Quick and agile, Kepa possesses fantastic reflexes and has developed his all-round game since establishing himself as Athletic Bilbao’s first-choice ‘keeper two years ago. A great shot-stopper, he is confident with the ball at his feet and capable of playing out from the back, even under pressure. Born in Ondarroa, a Basque seaside town, Kepa joined the Athletic academy at the age of nine and after gaining experience at their fourth-tier feeder club Basconia, he appeared regularly for Bilbao’s B-team, earning international recognition at youth level due to the quality of his displays. Kepa was loaned to SD Ponferradina, a Spanish second division side, in January 2015 and having made his debut against Racing Santander, he started on a regular basis, keeping seven clean sheets in the process as the team missed out on the play-offs by just one point. He established himself in another second tier loan move with Real Valladolid the next season, before returning to Bilbao for the 2016/17 campaign. Although not initially viewed as number one, he made his first appearance in an away game at Deportivo La Coruna, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win. He went on to make over 20 appearances throughout a season which ended with him representing Spain at the European Under-21 Championship. Last season, Kepa’s consistently impressive displays earned him regular plaudits inside and outside the club. He saved two of the three penalties he faced, as well as making the third-highest number of saves in the Spanish top flight and successfully executing more long-range passes – 368 – than any other goalkeeper in La Liga. His impressive form at club level led to a debut for the senior Spain side, which came in a 5-0 win over Costa Rica last November. He was duly named in the 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer. He becomes the sixth Spaniard in the Blues squad, joining Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Alonso, Cesc Fabregas, Pedro and Alvaro Morata. Kepa, who is eligible to play in Saturday’s Premier League opener against Huddersfield, will train with his new team-mates for the first time tomorrow. Welcome to Chelsea, Kepa! Athletic Bilbao have confirmed that Kepa Arrizabalaga's release clause has been met. Chelsea are set to sign the 23-year-old goalkeeper in the coming hours for a world-record fee for a shot-stopper of around £71.5m. #CFC |
Kepa's €80m release clause paid as Chelsea seal deal for Courtois replacement The Blues are on the verge of completing the signing of the Athletic Club goalkeeper, with their Belgian No.1 heading to Real Madrid Chelsea are close to finalising the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga having activated the goalkeeper's €80 million (£71m/$92m) release clause, Goal can confirm. The player's representatives and lawyers travelled to La Liga headquarters in Valencia on Wednesday to pay the fee, with Kepa now due to travel to London to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms. The Kepa deal will break the club's previous transfer record, set last season when the Blues signed Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid in an initial £58m ($75m) deal, potentially rising to £70m ($90m). It will also make Kepa the world's most expensive goalkeeper, less than a month after Alisson joined Liverpool in a £65m (€73m/$85m) move. The move fo the Spaniard will free up Thibaut Courtois to complete a switch to Real Madrid, with the Belgian having been absent from training as he looked to force through a switch to Santiago Bernabeu. Madrid have been keen to bring in Courtois in a €35m deal (£31m/$40m) for some time now, where the funds expected from that transfer being used by the Blues to secure Athletic goalkeeper Kepa. And the Blues' transfer business isn't likely to end with Kepa - Goal understands Maurizio Sarri's side are in talks over a loan move for Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic. Indeed, Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has revealed that his side will attempt to find a "high level replacement" should Kovacic complete a switch to Stamford Bridge. Time is against Sarri and Chelsea, however, with the transfer window for Premier League clubs closing at 5pm BST on August 9. Chelsea get their Premier League campaign underway on Saturday with an away trip to David Wagner's Huddersfield Town. https://www.google.com.ng/amp/www.goal.com/en/amp/news/kepas-80m-release-clause-paid-as-chelsea-seal-deal-for/utlkj9m1m2m51jky4uhf08hr7
