Basically, we have Passive Solar Dryer (PSD), Active Solar Dryer (ASD) & Hybrid Solar Dryer (HSD)
PSD also known as Natural Convection Solar Dryer uses only solar radiation (sunlight) and natural convection (or circulation) for drying materials. It has small drying capacity. However, ASD also known as Forced Convection Solar Dryer uses solar radiation and forced convection (facilitated by heat extractor/Blowers). It has large drying capacity, dry faster, more controllable and reliable.
When ASD is incorporated with external heater that uses electricity (or generating set) or gas (or biogas), etc, we call it HSD

The solar dryer can also be classified according to shape and they include Parabolic Greenhouse Solar Dryer, Solar Greenhouse Dryer, Solar Box Dryer, Solar Tunnel Dryer, Solar Cabinet Dryer, etc.

Why Solar Drying?

It has been estimated that 20-30% food grains, 30-50% vegetables, herbs and fruits are lost right on farm before they reach the markets and final consumers. Post harvest loss of grains, vegetables, fruits and herbs can be reduced by drying.

Solar drying remains a viable and cost effective method of drying and preserving food items for proper storage. It is more hygienic and efficient than traditional open air drying.
Solar drying utilizes natural convection, forced ventilation, solar radiation (sunlight) and greenhouse effect for produces drying. Moreover, charcoal/gas powered heating source can be installed to improve internal temperature.

Generally, Solar drying prevents spoilage, improves product hygiene, storability, availability, marketing and profitability. More importantly, produce nutrients, taste and colour are preserved.
