A 28 year old man simply identified as Ukeoma was killed and beheaded by unidentified gunmen this morning at Mgbuitanwo, in Emohua Clan, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, the home country of the Senatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in this Saturday’s rerun elections.

Another resident of the area was abducted by the gunmen as they fled the scene of the incident. This will be the second beheading that has taken place in Rivers state in the last two weeks

Yesterday in Cameroon, one of the most horrific things anyone can witness or hear about happened. A pregnant woman got to the hospital in a taxi and upon arrival she was found dead, but the twins in her belly were hitting (crying for air). The family rushed her into the hospital and begged the doctors to remove the babies but they refused and asked the woman's family to take her to the morgue.

The family argued that the babies were still alive and kicking inside the dead woman but the hospital refused to touch her, frustrating the deceased's sister, who took matters in her own hands and decided to operate on her sister with a blade. One baby came out dead and the other came out breathing but later gave up the ghost. Unbelievable!

A six-year-old Palestinian girl and her 10-year-old brother were killed in the Gaza Strip by fragments from a missile fired by an Israeli aircraft, medical officials said.
Debris from the explosion early on Saturday landed on the children's home in Beit Lahiya.
The girl, Israa Abu Khosa, died in hospital on Saturday afternoon having succumbed to critical injuries sustained during the attack, Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesperson for Gaza's Ministry of Health, told Al Jazeera.
Her brother Yassin died earlier, and was the first fatality from an air strike in Gaza since October.
Their brother, 13-year-old Ayoub Abu Khosa, sustained moderate injuries from the attack.
The Israeli air strike took place hours after rockets were launched at southern Israel on Friday night, according to the Israeli military. No casualties were reported from the rocket strikes.
The Gaza health ministry said Israel carried out five air raids on Hamas facilities.

The gunmen numbering about 12 attacked a UBA branch in Ammassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The armed robbers, on failing to gain access into the bank, carted away with ATMs inside the premises. According to eyewitnesses, policemen from the police station opposite the bank only emerged and shot sporadic guns as the robbers were leaving.

Said an eyewitness:

"The armed men threw bombs and dynamite at the walls of the bank, bringing down its fences. They gained access to the bank premises but were unable to get in after many attempts."

An example of the brutality of ISIS is being demonstrated by the group’s strict interpretation of Islamic law.
Despite the harsh nature of the ISIS-law, a Syrian woman, sentenced by ISIS to be executed by stoning, was able to miraculously escape the ordeal.

The woman was sentenced to be stoned for committing adultery in the ISIS controlled area of northern Syria this past Friday according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The sentence was carried out by a group of gunmen in the small town Raqqa.
After the identified woman was pelted by heavy stones and thought dead by her executors, she stood up and began to walk away. When one of the jihadi attempted to capture her again, he was stopped by an Islamic jurist.

“Her sentence is done, let her go and repent to her God.” The jurist said.


Some claim that it was “God’s will” that she survived her punishment for the crime of adultery:
“An IS militant was about to open fire at her when an Islamist jurist intervened and stopped him saying it was God’s will that she did not die,” The Observatory said about the execution by stoning.
Other women have not been as fortunate. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 15 people, 9 of which have been women, have been executed by ISIS in Syria ..

Charles P. Steinmetz contributed to solving these problems with his investigation of hysteresis losses in iron armatures. Nikola Tesla envisioned an entirely new type of motor when he visualized a spinning turbine, not spun by water or steam, but by a rotating magnetic field. His new type of motor, the AC induction motor, is the workhorse of industry to this day. Its ruggedness and simplicity (Figure above) make for long life, high reliability, and low maintenance. Yet small brushed AC motors, similar to the DC variety, persist in small appliances along with small Tesla induction motors. Above one horsepower (750 W), the Tesla motor reigns supreme.Modern solid state electronic circuits drive brushless DC motors with AC waveforms generated from a DC source. The brushless DC motor, actually
an AC motor, is replacing the conventional brushed DC motor in many applications. And, the stepper motor, a digital version of motor, is driven by alternating current square waves, again, generated by solid state circuitry Figure above shows the family tree of the AC motors described in this chapter.Cruise ships and other large vessels replace reduction geared drive shafts with large multi-megawatt generators and motors. Such has been the case with diesel-electric locomotives on a smaller scale for many year.

At the system level, (Figure above) a motor takes in electrical energy in terms of a potential difference and a current flow, converting it to mechanical work. Alas, electric motors are not 100% efficient. Some of the electric energy is lost to heat, another form of energy, due to I2R losses in the motor windings. The heat is an undesired byproduct of the conversion. It must be removed from the motor and may adversely affect longevity. Thus, one goal is to maximize motor efficiency, reducing the heat loss. AC motors also have some losses not encountered by DC motors: hysteresis and eddy currents.
Hysteresis and Eddy Current
Early designers of AC motors encountered problems traced to losses unique to alternating current magnetics. These problems were encountered when adapting DC motors to AC operation. Though few AC motors today bear any resemblance to DC motors, these problems had to be solved before AC motors of any type could be properly designed before they were built.Both rotor and stator cores of AC motors are composed of a stack of insulated laminations. The laminations are coated with insulating varnish before stacking and bolting into the final form. Eddy currents are minimized by breaking the potential conductive loop into smaller less lossy segments. (Figure below) The current loops look like shorted transformer secondary turns. The thin isolated laminations break these loops. Also,the silicon (a semiconductor) added to the alloy used in the laminations increases
electrical resistance which decreases the magnitude of eddy current.

Eddy currents in iron cores.
If the laminations are made of silicon alloy grain oriented steel, hysteresis losses are minimized. Magnetic hysteresis is a lagging behind of magnetic field strength as compared to magnetizing force. If a soft iron nail is temporarily magnetized by a solenoid, one would expect the nail to lose the magnetic field once the solenoid is de-energized. However, a small amount of residual magnetization, Br due to hysteresis remains. (Figure below) An alternating current has to expend energy, -Hc the coercive force, in overcoming this residual magnetization before it can magnetize the core back to zero, let alone in the opposite direction. Hysteresis loss is encountered each time the polarity of the AC reverses. The loss is proportional to the area enclosed by the hysteresis loop on the B-H curve. “Soft” iron alloys have lower losses than “hard” high carbon steel alloys. Silicon grain oriented steel, 4% silicon, rolled to preferentially orient the grain or crystalline structure, has still lower losses.

Once Steinmetz’s Laws of hysteresis could predict iron core losses, it was possible to design AC motors which performed as designed. This was akin to being able to design a bridge ahead of time that would not collapse once it was actually built. This knowledge of eddy current and hysteresis was first applied to building AC commutator motors similar to their
DC counterparts. Today this is but a minor category of AC motors. Others invented new types of AC motors bearing little resemblance to their DC kin.



Operating principles
When an AC motor is in steady-state rotation (motion), the magnetic fields of the rotor and stator rotate (move) with little or no slippage (near synchrony). The magnetic forces (repulsive and attractive) between the rotor and stator poles create average torque, capable of driving a load at rated speed. The speed of the stator rotating magnetic field (\omega_s) and the speed of the rotor rotating magnetic field (\omega_r), relative to the speed of the mechanical shaft (\omega_m), must maintain synchronism for average torque production by satisfying the synchronous speed relation (i.e., \pm\omega_s \pm\omega_r = \omega_m).[1] Otherwise, asynchronously rotating magnetic fields would produce pulsating or non-average torque.
The two main types of AC motors are classified as induction and synchronous. The induction motor (or asynchronous motor) always relies on a small difference in speed between the stator rotating magnetic field and the rotor shaft speed called slip to induce rotor current in the rotor AC winding. As a result, the induction motor cannot produce torque near synchronous speed where induction (or slip) is irrelevant or ceases to exist. In contrast, the synchronous motor does not rely on slip-induction for operation and uses either permanent magnets, salient poles (having projecting magnetic poles), or an independently excited rotor winding. The synchronous motor produces its rated torque at exactly synchronous speed. The brushless wound-rotor doubly fed synchronous motor system has an independently excited rotor winding that does not rely on the principles of slip-induction of current. The brushless wound-rotor doubly fed motor is a synchronous motor that can function exactly at the supply frequency or sub to super multiple of the supply frequency.
Other types of motors include eddy current motors, and also AC/DC mechanically commutated machines in which speed is dependent on voltage and winding connection.

A middle aged man who went berserk after he was confirmed to be suffering from food poisoning was shot dead by a police patrol team Monday in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State after he allegedly shot six persons dead in the community.

The man identified as Onana Osua was said to have left the hospital a sad man, after he was told by the hospital management that he had five days to live due to the poisoning he allegedly suffered.

He was said to have gone home to pick his gun and subsequently went after those he suspected to have poisoned him. Six persons were allegedly shot by the rampaging man whom Vanguard learnt was the chairman of a motor park in Uromi.

Student’s S*xcapade: We Went To The Club But Ended Up In The Forest
It was a Friday night. I was looking forward to spending the weekend at my best friend, Funmi’s
place. She stays outside the school premises while I stay inside the school hostel. As I braced up to get ready for another exciting weekend, little did I know that fate had a bitter experience wrapped up for me.

Funmi has been my friend since 100 level. We are now in 300 level but my love for her has not in any way diminished. What with her smartness, fun-loving nature and above all, her exceptional brilliance. Although a bit of a spoilt kid, I totally love every bit of her because she inspires me.

"How far? You never pack your bag since? I don tire o, I wan dey go...
I can’t wait to get home, eat and fall into my bed," Funmi said, looking at me with respite that day.

I had packed my bag already but was looking for my ‘early morning personal effects’ like toothbrush, sponge, towel and all. I had used them in the morning, but couldn’t put them in the bag because I needed them to be dry.

It was the second time I would be spending the weekend at her place and the first experience was great. She had told me this time around, her rich boyfriend would be taking us out, to a club probably.
No sooner had we gotten to her place than her boyfriend, Richards, buzzed her on phone. I didn’t hear what he said but from her responses, he was checking on her and also asking if we were prepared for the night’s outing. I was expectant and eager.

When we got to the club, I was all smiles. I was in the mood even before we started out. My spirit was high. Richards was seated afar, gulping bottles of spirit while we were on the dance floor digging it.

I enjoyed myself till it was time for us to head home. I didn’t know I was in for some scenes I had only witnessed in Nigerian movies.

“I told you to always lock the car’s door slowly! Do you want to break it apart?”, Richard faced Funmi as she hurriedly jammed the front door of the jeep. I wondered why Richards, who was loving, subtle and caring some hours ago, was talking as if he does not care.

“Calm down nah, wetin dey do you? Abi no be this same jeep? It’s my brother’s toy at home…please stop ranting!” Funmi replied her boyfriend, with the plainest of all facial expressions…(or so I supposed).

This obviously didn’t go down well with Richard who I later noticed was drunk to the stupor. We had already moved past major highways and we were driving along a road with bushes on our sides and Richards, who was obviously pissed from the last statement from his girlfriend, halted the car in the middle of the road.
