Similar but our web app can actuate not monitor , it can control opening and closing of your lock not monitor the door in case of fire outbreak or theft (hostage) you can remotely open your exits as many as they are one by one just by clicking of a button on our web app

The device serves as a local server within a confined building , in which u can wirelessly open and close the lock from a webpage we designed
As long as your computer and the device is connect to the same network via a router. But u'll require a unique password and username to be able to actuate the lock from the web

My name is Adeyemi Adekorede an electrical & elecronics graduate still waiting for nysc. I specialize in electronics and embedded system design with about 3years of experince in this field ,been implementing various hardware solutions since I was in 200L, will shred more light to smart systems design.
Smart systems
According to wikipedia Smart systems incorporate functions of sensing, actuation, and control in order to describe and analyze a situation, and make decisions based on the available data in a predictive or adaptive manner, thereby performing smart actions. In most cases the “smartness” of the system can be attributed to autonomous operation based on closed loop control, energy efficiency, and networking capabilities.
In short a system that can solve specific or varieties of problems with or without human interference or control.
Designing your smart system
To design your smart system solution such as robot, smart anti theft systems, etc involves the world of microcontrollers , microprocessors,fpga etc.
Microcontrollers are special integrated circuit (chips) which can be programmed to perform desired task
They are easier for learners and people without much electronics background as compared to other alternatives
Popular microcontrollers we have
1.Atmel on which the popular arduino (framework) is based
2.PIC Microcontrollers (microchip.)
3.Intel (8085 etc)
4.Texas Instruments(TI launchpad)
Etc to mention a few......
To program these each of them have a development environment (IDE) just as visual studio is for .net and netbeans for java
After writing the codes using Atmel studio,arduino IDE,mplab,keil,Energia etc as the development environment u program the microcontroller using the specialized programming kit.
After programming u need to build the actual circuit the microcontroller is going to work By soldering etc .

Understanding hardware design is not about copying codes here and there from the internet but writing the codes based on the manufacturers specs in the datasheet. All these rests on understanding the architecture of the microcontroller or microprocessor you're working with.

300level as an Elect student is very important as virtually all your courses would b a mixture of advanced maths, computer science and Electrical courses, since you wanna go into telecoms I advice not to joke with your advanced maths , electromagnetism , circuit theory and electronics courses , it's really fun if you learn to know and more importantly be smart with your lecturers and be prayerful
