Oga MI na piracy dey cause am
Cos we have some good writers and a huge no of readers.

But some fiction writers are very bad, don't can't even create a good imaginery scenes
But piracy hardly affects online sales. There are millionaire authors in America who made their millions selling e-books only. I am not saying Nigerian authors can be as rich as American authors, but at least they should be able to earn a decent income from their works... Which isn't the case.

Wrong, that's because no one has tried it. Nnedi Okoroafor is a good example though she's technically not a Nigerian.
You said I am wrong, then you say it is because nobody has tried it. I don't get you. Is there any millionaire fiction author in Nigeria that made his/her money in Nigeria, from fiction book sales in Nigeria? No. That's my argument. By the way, Nnedi Okoroafor lives in America.

Could be that they have all gravitated to Nollywood. I get told everyday that my story should be on the screen. I imagine others who set out to write prose too may have been coopted into the Nollywood bandwagon. Maybe the cash is there.
OK. But we still need real fiction authors who can make a decent living from their works.

Madam i wasted over 3 years of my life writing here and i can assure you that the money i got was not up to 20k

Whether your story sweet pass sugar cane, them no go buy

If you have too much free time, you could write here but if i ever write here again, i might be posting just once a week, anybody that don‘t like it should go and rest.
"Whether your story sweet pass sugar cane, them no go buy."

Lol! This got me laughing hard. I wanna ask though, which platform were you selling your books on back then, and how much were you selling them for? Thanks.

Lol funny but true. If you want to make money from writing don't post stories for free here and don't expect to blow from the first. Consistency and patience pays.
OK. But even the people that don't post their stories here for free still are not making money. So, I think I would still go with the name recognition I get from posting my stories here, than the peanuts people make from selling on okadabooks or any other platform they sell their books on.

Dedication is actually the key for any one who likes to read, price should not be a hindrance for a serious mind.

The urgency to make money actually make writers forget this problems and go into production, (Note: I am not dissuading from production) but they need to consider the average means of survival of the population to set their price economically (actually they do) but still need to make provision for lower price.

Another reason for lack of money is publication or advertisement- which is one of the greater factor to consider before and after production. Many writers get dissuaded after few attempts when advertising their work. I spent more time advertising my business than I even spend to do my daily work, and this pays off. Forget how long you have spent or even how much you spend when making advertisement, if there is need they need to pay for adverts (when it calls for).
OK

Therock5555 has tried to sell the books for lower price, let's hear his opinion on how it went sha. I saw when he was trying to do something like that
What platform was he using to sell his books? Okadabooks? Amazon? Apple iBooks?

To achieve a good audience and improve wealth, mehn serious work needs to be done. Even PDF sales have not been encouraging, so I basically think there is no way out from me now
There's always a way... We just have to put our heads together and find it.

Nigerians find it hard to pay for literature works both online and offline but like reading. The population does not matter at any time to the quantity of literature fiction work that is sold and hence, makes this writers same from day one. Outside Nigerian , writers sell there work as the price is moderate and affordable for the readers and general public.

The low standard of living of the population contributes as books cannot be afforded by people who wish to read them and in the end they are dissuaded from trying to read and some serious ones, wait for free piece.

kayo80
Very true. Nice breakdown. I'm looking for the best means to get people to start paying for writers books, even if it is as low as 50 Naira per book/story.
LiteratureRe: Why Are There No Millionaire Fiction Writers In Nigeria? by kayo80(op): 11:29am On Dec 11, 2017
Yes, Nigerians don't really read, but someone like NaijaSingleGirl was able to capture a lot of Nigerians with her humor and controversial subject matters. But since she released her book (29 and single or something like that) two years ago, the book has sold just 800 copies on Okadabooks. I was really disappointed in her sales, judging from her popularity and all the promo she did before the book was released, I was expecting it to have sold at least a couple of thousands of copies.

We have a population of 180 million. And in Lagos alone, there are like 20 million people. What can be done to turn things around so fiction authors make a good living from their works?

What's up guys? This came at the right time. I was thinking of starting a whatsapp group for Nairaland writers, but this can serve the same purpose.

So, what I want to ask you guys this morning is this... Why are there no rich fiction writers in Nigeria?

I was just having a conversation with my friend in my house just now... He is into online branding, and we were talking about how Nigeria has such a large population, which supports other forms of art (music, movies, even painters), but authors don't make shitt (pardon my French).

This is sickening, and it needs to change. We put in as much work as other artists, why don't we make even a quarter or a tenth of what they make?

I have done a lot of research and I have found out there are no rich fiction writers in Nigeria. Why is this so?

Yes, I know Nigerians don't have a reading habit, but what of the population of readers in the county? I believe they should be enough to make some authors of good works rich. Come on! We have a population of 180 million for crying out loud.

That's not a cross dresser. That's a girl...Look closer. Because she has a strong face and strong looking arms doesn't mean she is a man.

I think what she did is illegal. You can't share someone pictures online without their consent and especially with this type of (unconfirmed) story
She could actually sue Nairaland for defamation of character. First, they are posting her pic without her permission and for the world to see. Also, they are saying she is a transgender. This is so wrong.
