Thanks repogirl, DarkRebel69, crazypencils20, etc. I almost lost it for a minute there. I was more pissed at the writers taking sides with the assshole. I don't mind constructive critisism, but what the OP posted was far from it. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

MrScribe: Grow up, please. I have read some of your works and they are not much to write home about but because your readers fill you ears with lies, you are unwilling to digest the truth. I told you i am an ediot na. But for real, I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT OR SAID I WAS A GOOD WRITER. So, yea, you are completely right when you say that my works are nothing to write home about. They are filled with typos, and not well constructed. I am not fighting for myself, i am fighting for the great writers on this platform people like you are underappreciating. |

MrScribe: Bro, calm down. Are you a writer at all? Writers and critics are like brothers in Literature. A critic does not have to know how to write. You don't need to be a writer to appreciate literature. Even writers sometimes take on the role of critics. Take for instance, T.S. Elliot's criticism of Orwell's Animal Farm. Talk of William Golding and his many critics. One critic described his first novel "Lord of the Flies" as boring. Soyinka has been described by a section of critics as inaccessible.
Every time a publisher is preparing to release a book, they first send it out to a couple of critics. Do you know why? Because it is only from a critic that they can get honest opinions on the book. No. I am not a writer. I am an ediot according to you. 1 Like |

perhaps monetary motivations will make them think deep and write with gusto ...
I am a an intermediate programmer and this section is often where I unwind with some stories ( esp that horror collaboration, initiated by Divepen and Bibiz work) but I get irritated when I see other works that seem so ....there..
Don't give me excuses of how long u spent writing , how ur brain cracked open and spewed bile and so on. if u must present something , expect criticisms, present something that will make people react , something that will make peeps declare fatwas on you, something simple yet thought provoking.... Lilyjoe567: Hello Mr THT80,
So I've gone through the first, and now to this current page and seen all comments but one really stuck. The one with the constructive and destructive criticism.
It's okay to criticise, fine we even need it. But it's very wrong to condemn every persons work on here just because you think it's not up to per standard, cause what you did is just destroy some people's morale.
Some of us here are introverts and writing is what makes our voices be heard in a way. But you doing this right now has done more damage than you could possibly imagine
You read something and didn't like it, fine, you could've just pointed out where the persons went wrong, not condemn everyone's work that they've worked so hard on.
We're not all professionals. Some might be, but some aren't, so it's not right to openly be mean, cause that's what you are. And you are egotistical, not sure if you know it though. But I have a feeling you do
So next time you feel the need to say something in a public forum, grab a book and a pen and write the things you wanna say. When you're done, read what you've written, and if you read it and a little, if not much just that little part of you feels it's gonna hurt a lot of people, then tear it off and begin again in a fresh page till you can come up with a nicer way of saying it
And to all you wonderful people trying to stand up for all writers on here. You guys are all amazing
And sorry this is coming a bit late EXACTLY!!! God bless you for this comment. This is why I had to defend the great writers in this section. He has no idea what damage he did with that post. That is why I was even vexed with other writers that were supporting the guy. I am not saying constructive criticism isn't needed, but if you have ever ever in your life started a story, gone through the doubts, the mental drains, burnouts, long hours of solitude it takes to come of creative plots and then completed a story, you won't welcome what that guy did with his write-up. 1 Like |

THT80: I didn't rubbish the efforts of anyone. I only expressed my opinion on the average quality of writing on this board, which I hope will improve. But deflecting criticism is surely not the pathway towards improvement. You could say this if your criticism was constructive, but it definitely wasn't. It is obvious you have tunnel vision when it comes to literary works and expect every form of writing to be one-way. And it is also obvious you have never created anything before, that is why you are so quick to tear down people's works. Now look at some parts of your initial post and tell me you didn't blatantly disrespect all the great writers in this section. "I haven't been able to make it past a single paragraph of any story I have clicked on, DESPITE READING OVER 60 STORIES ON THIS BOARD.""The writers who managed to utilize proper grammar in their first paragraphs were just terribly uncreative with words and the expositions and descriptions were like something you'd read from the transcript of AN UNEDUCATED 8 YEAR OLD NARRATING AN ORDEAL.""The imagery I got from the ones I managed to read past a sentence were dull, ugly, uninspiring frames and shapes that EVOKED DISGUST AND ALMOST MADE ME GAG AS THEY AROSE IN MY MIND."If you call the above CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, there must be something wrong with your brain. I have a background in Psychology, and it is very clear you have a case of superiority complex. It took you five paragraphs to get to your point in your initial post. You were too busy displaying your use of the English Language (which is great by the way), which was a sign that you were really trying to show off your skills than constructively criticize anyone. You can come back with another response, and try to bamboozle me with your big grammar, but deep down you know what I have said above is the bitter truth. And please, I would love if you could (in your leisure time) 'try' and write a short story of about 2,000 words. You don't have to post it here, just attempt it, and when you are done, do a critique of it. Thank you. 14 Likes 2 Shares |

I noticed Divepen1 didn't push any story to front page this morning. Please guys, don't let this dude kill your morale. Critics like him have no idea how hard it is to write...to create something out of nothing...to create a whole new world in your head. There are a lot of great writers on this forum and I am so pained (not for myself) that this OP is making them feel like all they have done thus far has been rubbish.
And to you THT80, you are a heartless human being to have rubbished the efforts of the great writers in this section. Yes, there are some not so good writers, but for you to class all the writers together and say they have all written thrash shows the type of individual you are. 3 Likes |

THT80: You guys will never be able to compete or stand shoulder to shoulder with the denizens of developed countries if you continue to oppose and deflect criticism in such a pitiable manner.
If my initial write-up wasn't as polemic as it was, it wouldn't have inspired the reaction it has inspired and I am glad it has, because this indicates that my message has been received and understood. All that remains is for the lot of you on this board to transcend you egos, educate yourselves on how to write, study the writing of better writers and try to use this acquired knowledge to improve your writing before deciding to upload it on a globally accessible forum. It is clear you are the one that needs to transcend your ego. Even with how unnecessarily insulting you were with your initial post, I would have overlooked it. But when I read where you said there is not one good writer on here and that you read 60 stories and couldn't get through their first paragraphs, I knew you were the one with the problem. 1 Like |

THT80: It's worrying how badly most people react to constructive criticism. If our conspicuous errors aren't pointed out to us, how then can we grow? How do we expect to move forward and improve in areas we've insinuated ourselves into? Wouldn't we just be wallowing in the muddy waters of mediocrity, all the while existing under the blind illusion that we are swimming in the warm springs of proficiency and progress? We should develop a different response to criticism. One that doesn't further illuminate our ignorance, but one that deems us worthy of further correction and guidance.
Your response to criticism is as appalling and as pathetic as the writing in all the stories I have read on this board, and it bespeaks of a tacit acknowledgement of the poverty of good writing inherent in this forum. People respond this way when their ego is hurt from seeing the painful truth about themselves. When the ego is wounded it pushes a person to react angrily, as someone possessed by a vindictive poltergeist, rambling incoherently without making a modicum of sense, spiting vitrols, casting aspersions and employing the use of swear words, just to heal it's wounds, but all the while forgetting that the only way to heal itself is to accept the truth and make concerted efforts to receive and apply correction.
How can I enjoy reading when I have to write the material that I'll read? And where is the diversity in reading when all I read is material written by established writers and foreigners? Shouldn't I be able to say that I have read something of worth from young Nigerians as myself? Do you know how painful it is to discover the so called biggest forum in West Africa only to arrive at it's literature section and be greeted by writing that evokes the feeling of vomiting?
Yes. Excellence is a product of skill, hardwork and determination. But you failed to include practice. And one doesn't practice by crafting an unimaginative and poorly written story and uploading it's full content on a forum that's essentially a microcosm of Nigeria, and one that can be easily accessed by anyone in the world, thereby potentially reinforcing the narrative that black people, especially the ones residing in Africa, have low IQs, since it would require some level of intelligence to write something that doesn't make people puke at. Dude, your criticism wasn't constructive in any way, shape, or form. You just came here to shhit on the whole Lit section. And from reading your comments, it is very clear you have a case of superiority complex and you love to flash big grammar here and there. You are not satisfied with the writing here, go and "buy" books with money. Or just write your own story and read since it is clear you get off of reading your own "impeccable queens english." 3 Likes |
