A NORTHERN CONQUEST?

With the recent appointment of a new Inspector-General of Police, Nigeria's entire security architecture took on a distinct sectional shape. Take a look.

1) Defence Minister - Mansur Dan-Ali - North.- Muslim
2) DG DSS - Mamman Daura - North- Muslim
3) Chief of Army Staff - Tukur Buratai - North- Muslim
4) Chief of Air Staff - Abubakar Sadique - North- Muslim
5) IG of Police - Ibrahim Idris - North-Muslim

Save for the Chief of Defence Staff (a Yoruba) and the Chief of Naval Staff (from Cross River), Nigeria's entire defence structure with its command and control systems is controlled by one section of the country. Save for the Navy (whose operations, of course, are mainly coastal), Northern Muslims command every security organization where men lawfully bear arms in Nigeria.

But no matter how alarming this may seem, the one-sidedness isn't even my own fear...I have worse fears.

My greatest fear in the Nigeria that is unravelling before our very eyes are those Nigerians who see these alarming signs but choose to keep quiet or pretend like it's normal.

Reminds me of Albert Speer, an architect, Hitler's chief Minister of War Production, an intellectual who truly believed Nazi ideals but pretended he didn't know a Holocaust was being perpetrated by the regime he served with his brains and considerable talent. It was people like Albert Speer who helped prop up their Third Reich till the last Nazi shrieked his last curse in 1945.

Those who see clear signs and pretend otherwise are a real danger.

Very interestingly, it was in this same Nazi reign that Martin Niemoller wrote his now world famous rebuke against the cowardice of German intellectuals during the rise of the Nazi party:

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."
