It has been suggested that the environmental revolution has two aspects. Firstly, it can be seen as man made changes in our natural environment that is both worldwide and sudden; Secondly, it can be regarded as a transformation in human attitude towards the environment (Nicholson, 1970). Rapid growth in the world population, technical innovations and increased industrialization has led to changes in the natural environment at an accelerated pace. Monitoring the environment, particularly the landscape is very essential for protection and development as well as for acquiring information needed for a meaningful research is based on the study of the past and present conditions and protections to produce the future (Gepung and Jicham, 1989). Rapport and Reiger (1980) approach to environmental assessment required three major interdependent sets of data. The classification of the ecological system. The qualification of those aspects of human activities, vis-à-vis population density, technological advancement etc. which affect or degrades the environment. Identification of vegetation and agricultural changes which are essential indicators of the ecological status of the study area. According to Billing (1988), the vegetation and agriculture are more or less a sensitive indicator of environment conditions or it is the first that is noticed in any environmental changes, due to the fact that they are the primary producers of the ecosystem which virtually all organism depends on, and have proven their validity as indicator of environmental conditions through time and space (Billing, 1998). Rise in world’s population is necessitating expansion in land related activities which in turn brings about some considerable spatial changes with enormous consequences to the environment. Land manager and planners need reliable mechanism to assess these consequences by detecting, monitoring and analysing changes in land condition effectively. Infact, demand for an efficient land cover changes detection system currently exists among a variety of individuals and organizations (Green, et al, 1994). Changes detection is the process of identifying differences in the state of an objects or phenomenon by observing it at different times. Essentially, this involves the ability to qualify temporal alternations and transformations using multi temporal data sets. Satellite remote sensing systems provide a good opportunity of speedily generating such data-set over a relatively shorter time interval (twice a day for AVHRR, every 18 days for land sat, and every 26 days for spot) then either air photography, radar or ground observation satellite system measure radiance from all object in radiance value called digital numbers (DNs) (Sule, 1990). But the same object can have different DNs if it has undergone a change over time. Satellite systems also generate which is sensitive to a feature, by carefully, selecting a band (or a combination of bands) one can get much as possible excellent information about a feature of his interest. The possibility of using satellite image for mapping was restricted to research work in GIS and image system (LIS). However, the application of spot imagery into mapping was introduced in 1988. Thus, the effective use of remote sensing data with interpretation techniques. In particular, data processing development and testing of sensors, in studying of materials or properties of surface features, and for the preparation of ground validation. It is clear however, that the application of remote sensing data to present environmental problems will be achieved by multi-disciplinary specialisation and advices which are to be given by experts in space technology studies (fusel et al, 2000). Today, various photographic areas, resources assessment and resources management planning, identification, classification, tree species, agricultural crop type, vegetation community, hydrological features and soil type can be appropriately mapped and interpreted through Remote Sensing and GIS technology (omojola,2005). Knowledge about land use and its changes over time has become increasingly important to overcome the problems of haphazard, uncontrolled development, loss of prime agricultural lands and deteriorating of environmental qualities. Land use data are also needed in the analysis of environmental processes and problems that must be understood if living conditions and standards are to be improved or maintained at current levels. |

This is a very interesting feature on Nigerians who fought in world war two. Apparently Nigerian soldiers made up over half of the 90,000 West African troops that fought the Japanese in the Burma War. Brigadier Babafemi Ogundipe (of January-July 1966 fame) was a Burma war veteran too. You can read the story at the following link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8201717.stm Plus there are interview with some of the Nigerian veterans here: http://www.dansusman.com/Burma_Vets/

KADUNA—Kaduna State Government yesterday said HIV/AIDS cases in the state had dropped from 9% to 0.2% in the past one year, making it the leading state in the control of the dreaded virus. Gov. Nasir-El-Rufai At a briefing, Commissioner for Health, Professor Andrew Nok, also said there was no single case of Lassa fever in the state after three persons were treated of disease last year. He said: “Kaduna State has been adjudged the best state in the test of HIV/AIDS in the country. This has earned the state two consecutive United Nations AIDS test awards. We won first prize in the first round of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, MNCH, Week because we were able to test 84,000 pregnant women from 12 of the 23 local government areas of Kaduna State. “For the second round, we expanded to all the 23 LGAs, and successfully screened 126,398 pregnant women in five days.” Nok, said the latest result showed that the prevalence had dropped to 0.02%, which he said was a huge relief from the previous 9% claimed for the state earlier. According to him, the Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital, Kaduna had now been upgraded to become Kaduna State University Teaching Hospital. He said: “We are upgrading the Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital to have all the ultra-modern facilities that a functional modern Teaching Hospitals has. This is necessary if we must retain the accreditation or Medical Faculty that has been given by the Nigerian University Commission.” The commissioner also explained that because of the scourging diseases like Kidney failures and other forms of renal diseases, the cost also of trying to manage patients with kidney diseases, eight Dialysis Machines were purchased. “I want to assure you that there is no single of Laser fever in Kaduna state since the last infected three persons were treated and discharged last year. We have carried out very meticulous work on the problem, guaranteeing and testing all that had come in contact with sufferers of the diseases. It was a very expensive venture, and today we a free of Lassa fever,” said Nok. |

Located ay lat 8°50’N, 7°10’E/long 8.833°N, 7.167°E with a total population of 1,405,201 people and a total land area of 7,315 km² (2,824 sqmiles) with a total GDP of 5.01 billion dollars with a relative name and symbol know as “ CENTRE OF UNITY”.The federal capital territory is the home of Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. The territory was formed in 1076 from parts of former Nasarawa, Niger, and Kogi States. It is in the central region of the country. Unlike other nigerian states, which are headed by elected governors , it is administered by the federal capital territory administration, headed by a minister appointed by the president. The territory is located just North of the confluence of the Niger River and Benue River. It is bordered by the States of Niger to the West and North, Kaduna to the North-East, Nasarawa to the East and South, and Kogi to the South-West. Lying between latitud8.25 and 9.20 North of the equator and longitude 6.45 and 7.39 East of the Greenwich meridian, Abuja is geographically located in center of the country. The federal capital territory has a land mass of approximately 7,315 km², of which the actual city occupies 2,753km². it is situated within the Savannah region with moderate climate conditions.Within the main natural resources found in Abuja such as Marble, tin, clay, mica and tantalite. The territory is currently made up of six (6) local councils, comprising the city of Abuja and five Local Government Areas, namely, ABAJI GWAGWALADA KUJE BWARI KWALI The present Suleja was formally known as Abuja, a sparsely populated town with a population of about 500,000 people. It was completely rural with little or no infrastructure until the enactment of decree No.6 of 1976 which before 1976 Decree, a committee (The AGUDA Panel) was commissioned to go round the country in search of a suitable location for the new federal capital with two major points of reference, a region that is sparsely populated and that is centrally located. And the region now known as Abuja met these requirement and hence became the recommended location for the New Federal Capital Territory. The acceptance of the recommendation of the committee, led to the enactment of Decree No.6 of 1976, the Federal Capital Territory Act, and this became the blueprint for the re-location of the new Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja. The town originally know as Abuja was later renamed Suleja, while the name Abuja was reserved for the Capital-to be. In order to realize the objective of developing Abuja, the new capital city into a masterpiece on the Africa continent, the federal government established the federal capital development Authority (FCDA) as the sole agency vested with the responsibility of planning, designing and developing of the capital territory. |

World Bank targets 2016 for Nigeria’s economic recovery - National Mirror http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/world-bank-targets-2016-for-nigerias-economic-recovery/ The World Bank has projected that despite its current fiscal travails occasioned by huge losses of revenue on crude oil exports, Nigeria would begin to experience economic growth recovery as from next year. The Bank, in its Africa’s Pulse, a twice-yearly analysis of issues shaping Africa’s economic prospects published yesterday at the start of the World Bank’s 2015 Spring Meetings in Washington, D. C., noted that although the nation’s economy would suffer this year, growth is expected to rebound in 2016 and beyond. This prediction is predicated on the expected impact of the reforms to diversify the economy. http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/world-bank-targets-2016-for-nigerias-economic-recovery/ |
