EducationGood News: Meet UNILAG Student Invents Mathematics Board Game by kdos(op): 6:16pm On Sep 22, 2014
Meet the University of Lagos (UNILAG) student that invented a basic mathematics demystifying board game. He is a 400 level student of Mathematics Education, University of Lagos (UNILAG) and goes by the name, Olatunji Moshood Abiola.

Report by Guardian Online:
Meet UNILAG Student That Invented Mathematics Board Game
Abiola Moshood Olatunji - UNILAG
FROM early childhood through to adulthood, generations of Nigerians have live with something akin to a morbid fear for Mathematics as a subject. This condition, many people refer to as mathematics anxiety.
According to Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, United States, Mark H. Ashcraft, mathematics anxiety, is “a feeling of tension, apprehension, or fear that interferes with mathematics performance.”

It is on record that Richardson and Suinn developed the first mathematics anxiety measurement scale in 1972. Since this development, several researchers have examined mathematics anxiety in empirical studies with the reports receiving wide publicity.
These studies are deemed very important because of the importance of the subject to the technological advancement of any nation as well as its ability to bolster the critical and creative thinking of learners at early stage of learning.

These among many other reasons perhaps, are what prompted 400 level student of Mathematics Education, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Olatunji Moshood Abiola, to invent a mathematics board game.
According to Abiola, the new board game would not only enrich learners’ mathematical knowledge, but also further improve their love for the subject.
He further added that using the board game as teaching aids in schools especially at the basic education level, or as an extra curricular activity would demystify mathematics and stimulate students’ interest in the subject.

“The idea of developing the board game started when I was in senior secondary one, which was when I started wondering about the possibility of coming up with something just like the Ludo game because I know children love to have fun by playing games. Since then, I have been working on it. Fortunately for me, I got the right pattern and design of the game when I went to use the lavatory at the Elkanemi Hall of our institution. In fact, the design of the floor tiles in the toilet that gave a clue of how the pattern should look like,” Abiola recalled.

“The board game, which is mainly for children between the ages of two and six, was designed to solve the problems posed by the abstract nature of Mathematics; allow kids get excited about the subject; enhance and stimulate their interest in the subject; allow them learn while having fun and also ensure a sound mathematical foundation for everybody,” the inventor said of its intended benefits.
He described how an aspect of the game works thus: “Math Race 1 (MR1), is a mathematics game for primary school children. It enhances pupils’ ability to know addition, subtraction, multiplication and division while having fun. A maximum of 6 players can play at a time.”

I the game, he explained, “the colour denotes the action to perform. For instance green is for addition, yellow is for multiplication, blue for subtraction, black for division while red is pick a card, and there are twelve cards a player can select from. And the player performs the action on the card, (like subtract 11). It can also be played by one player, but the more the players the more interesting it becomes. It is also a family game that parents can play with their kids. Additionally, it can also be used for adult education and also be included in the competitions menu of inter-house sport competition in schools. The sweetest thing is that it keeps getting easier.

“After MR1, I have also invented, “Math Race 2,” which is a modified version of MR1, with the introduction of negative numbers. The third game, “Math War”, enhances users’ ability to master the multiplication table from one to 12. A maximum of four and minimum of two pupils can play this at a time. The game has been play-tested by over 40 kids. Currently, I’m working on a new board game, Math Race 3, which will be played without a dice.

“During the process of inventing MR1, my mum started complaining as a result of the dice she saw with me because she thought I had started gambling. So, I had to isolate myself while play-testing the game. However, it was the addition and subtraction challenge that were first solved and I wanted to stop there. But I later introduced colour in order for the multiplication and division parts of the game to be brought in. However, in a situation where players get stuck in the middle of it all and go for onwards of four hours without a winner, the red card comes into play. This is the reason I introduced the action cards for colour red, which tells a player to perform some specific action, like add 20,” he said of some of the processes he went through to create an enjoyable game for pupils.

On how he joggled developing the board game and devoting adequate time for his academic activities he said, “It wasn’t easy considering the fact that we do a lot of courses in my faculty. So, I spent one hour in the “laboratory” everyday. For me, the laboratory is anywhere. It may be in my hostel, in the lecture room, at home or around the faculty. I just make sure, I spend one hour a day thinking about a problem and finding a solution to it. “

For now, Abiola’s invention is still a distance away from being on sale in educational shops or being enjoyed by pupils in schools because it is still in prototype. “For now, schools cannot access it because all I have with me is a prototype. That is why I’m seeking the help of corporate organisations and investors to sponsor this new invention.”

The Education Secretary, Ifako Ijaiye Local Government District, Mr. Taiwo Balogun, who has play-tested the game had this to say said, “The invention is a practical experimentation of teaching and learning of mathematics at basic education level. Knowing that mathematics is a core subject, it would assist and enhance learning for users. I have tested it and I can recommend it for all schools.”

Also, a lecturer at the Mathematics Education Department of UNILAG, Dr. Adeneye Awofala said, “The board game would be of immense benefit to Nigerian students. It would help them to see mathematics as a practical thing and guide them to the realisation that mathematics is not a fearful subject. It would sharpen their understanding at least at the basic level, and cause them to see the subject as something they can do, something around them; something available anywhere, at any time.”

EducationKwara State, Ondo State, Schools To Open Monday by kdos(op): 2:32pm On Sep 18, 2014
The Kwara State government has directed primary and secondary schools to resume on Monday.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) had directed its members not to resume, until their demands on the control of the Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) were met. The Commissioner for Education, Saka Onimago, asked all schools to provide basic hygiene materials, such as washing bowls, soap and towels.

Onimago, in a statement, directed two teachers from each school to undergo training on Ebola prevention, adding that the programme would begin as soon as the federal ministries of Health and Education provide the necessary facilities. He said the new school fees of N750 per term had been fixed for senior secondary schools, N500 for junior secondary and N250 for primary schools.

Also, the Ondo State government has directed all public and private schools to resume on Monday.
Commissioner for Information Kayode Akinmade, in a statement, said the government has made provision for the safe return of pupils to their schools.

He said the state has lined up activities to sensitise the public, headteachers and teachers on how to prevent the disease.

The statement said scanners would be distributed to schools for early detection of contagious diseases.
The statement said meeting and sensitization are on-going among education and health officials as well as stakeholders in the primary and secondary education system.

Akinmade said government has also brought in a disinfection expert from the United Kingdom to train in the prevention of the disease. But in Niger State, the government has fixed October 10 for the resumption for all schools.

The government said the new date was informed by the Eid-el-Kabir festival expected to hold in the first week of October.

The new date was announced when Governor Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu received a delegation of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) in his office yesterday.

Aliyu said most pupils would want to celebrate the festival with their parents, hence the September 22 date will not work.

"Most of the children will want to witness the slaughtering of rams and participate in other post-Sallah festivities," Aliyu said.

He said fixing the resumption date for Friday would enable pupils in boarding schools to tidy their surroundings for classes to begin on Monday.

EducationNOUN Ilearn The Threshold Of Educational Revolution by kdos(op): 6:20pm On Sep 17, 2014
The National Open University of Nigeria in its effort to take education to the doorstep of the Nigerian populace irrespective of their social status has deployed and implemented iLearn portal technology to enhance student’s learning experience.

The N.O.U.N. iLearn platform has been created to ease access to excellent quality education. The platform provides amongst many, the following:

Online class discussions organized by NOUN facilitators thereby creating a virtual classroom environment.
Facility for students to get answers to any questions or areas of difficulty pertaining to their course of study
Networking and collaboration Tools to help in community of interaction among students, facilitators, academic staff and faculty members
Better study tools such as the Smart e-Book
Digitized lecture video and audio materials for an enhanced student’ learning experience available on the platform.
Access to Assignments, Quizzes and Self-study Assessment tools

For decades, providing education for all has been a major agenda for the global community. Efforts have continually been ploughed in and thankfully, remarkable milestones have been attained at different levels. One of such milestones is the innovative use of information technology to democratize education. The recent boom of online learning platforms across the world give credence to the progress being made in the use of technology to create education solutions. Some of these platforms like Coursera, Lynda.com, Alison, Codeacademy, Udemy and Khan Academy, have already gained wide acclaim even among Nigerian youths. The beauty of these platforms is the easy access they provide to a vast variety of educational resources, networks and fun learning all at the speed of a click.

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has now joined the league of leading global institutions at the forefront of using technology to enhance learning, with its migration to a new e-learning platform – iLEARN. Worthy of note is the fact that iLearn represents the very first time in the history of Nigerian tertiary education that e-learning is being fully integrated by a university with indigenous courses made available online, accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world.

Excitedly, with its recent introduction of iLearn, NOUN has succeeded in stepping on to the threshold of pioneering an innovative educational solution to the problems facing tertiary education in Nigeria. With this move, NOUN is giving its students the opportunity to gain access to multiple education delivery channels, which include virtual facilitation, video lectures, audio lectures, smart books, interactive courseware and various other resources in real time through the iLearn platform.

On the 14th of April this year, the ICT solution provider powering the iLearn portal presented it to the institution at a 3-day usage and capacity building event held in Lagos. In attendance was the Vice Chancellor of the National Open University, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe alongside other staff of the institution. As one of the pieces of the robust capacity building plan, the training program focused on providing practical know-how to academic staff of NOUN on how to use the iLearn platform. It presented firsthand the current challenges students faced while studying and how innovative technologies will solve these challenges, improve learning and further reposition the National Open University of Nigeria to provide world class Open and Distance Learning in Africa. Following this capacity building event, in-school trainings have been conducted across all the faculties, during which all NOUN lecturers/facilitators were introduced to the platform and educated on its usage. Furthermore, in-school clinics have been scheduled towards the beginning of the new semester to ensure that all the facilitators are up to speed with the new portal. NOUN students have also started gaining access to the platform and a support service is in full operation, rendering necessary help to the students.

Truly speaking, NOUN is one of the government’s most laudable attempts at providing Nigerians with access to formal tertiary education in a manner suited to their circumstances. NOUN currently has the largest student population amongst all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The university under the visionary leadership of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe, has stayed true to its mandate in spite of several mitigating factors. Among such factors is the low level of lecturer to student interaction due to its underlying Open and Distance Learning framework. These issues that affected the students also affected the institution, as the increasing student population became a strain on the institution’s infrastructure and manpower.

But with iLearn, an avenue for real time facilitator-to-student interaction is now provided, in a manner that leverages economies of scale through technology. This is achieved using customized features such as virtual classrooms with class discussion, course forums and the “Ask A Question” functionality. Facilitators will be able to moderate a class session, directly answer student’s questions, and provide additional insight to subject areas. The effect of this is seamless interaction between facilitators and students, and between students and fellow students. Furthermore, by allowing access through various avenues including the internet, mobile phones and even via SMS, iLearn now makes learning truly flexible and convenient. Students no longer need to study in isolation. If they encounter any issue while studying or should they be in need of any information, they can post questions or requests for explanation to thousands of fellow students a click away – be it on a laptop, tablet or mobile phone. Students will obtain first grade and quality facilitation from NOUN lecturers on the NOUN iLearn platform.

NOUN is now set to play a bigger role in solving the problem of education deficit in the country as the iLearn platform allows the delivery of quality education to a limitless number of students, thereby introducing unprecedented cost controls. Beyond that, individuals seeking to advance their education (professionals, working class people and yes, mums) can now take advantage of this platform without serious worries over time, space and financial constraints. Arguably, the NOUN iLearn initiative is a major boost to President Goodluck Jonathan’s national transformation agenda with respect to education.

In the end, the solutions to the problems bedeviling Nigeria’s educational sector will be solved in part by innovation. However it must be pointed out that innovation cannot in itself survive in a vacuum. It must be driven with passion beyond measure by the drivers of policy, technological thinkers and every individual who cares for a better and progressive Nigeria. Government, teachers and students must learn new skills, make new sacrifices and embrace change! With its evident values, it is safe to admit that iLearn represents one of the noteworthy milestones in climbing out of the abyss that our educational system is currently in.

These are to mention a few benefits to all concerned.

To effectively administer this innovative development, the management of NOUN have included the sum of N7,500.00 only to cover administrative charges and running costs of the platform per semester.
We anticipate your cooperation in order to make our goal of revolutionizing the learning experience a success for the benefits of all our esteemed students.

Brig. Gen. Olawumi said the introduction of the mobile application (app) was a tool for information dissemination that will fast track easy link between the scheme and its publics.

He said the mobile app will enable corps members communicate amongst themselves and officers of the scheme using their mobile phones.

The NYSC boss said during the 2014 batch B orientation course, the app will be made available in the online stores of Google and Blackberry for corps members to download into their phones and tablets.
The batch C corps members would be able to access their posting online, he said.

The acting director of ICT department of the scheme Joseph Abu said the mobile app “will technologically put the scheme in the pockets of corps members.

Some of the information includes the service guide, Bye laws, Security tips, health tips, distress issues, chatting platform, language lessons, and service news amongst others.”

He added that the app will equally offer that staff of the scheme the platform for adequate monitoring and feedback on any issue raised by corps members.

EducationASUP NEC Meeting Uodates: Strike Continues As NEC Awaits Senate Meeting by kdos(op): 9:10pm On Jun 30, 2014
According to report reaching us, the outcome of the ASUP NEC Meeting in Yabatech, Lagos is not favorable, we are informed that the strike continues as ASUP await Senate meeting.

The Main reason for publishing this post is to inform Polytechnic Students that ASUP will be holding another NEC meeting on the 1st of July, 2014 (And we hope it is not going to be the same story)

If you recalled, the Union started their NEC meeting in Lagos State after Government representatives refused to show up for the meeting they were scheduled to have together. (Seriously, the F.G have no business with ASUP again?)

End ASUP strike - Nigeria Polytechnic Students to FG and ASUP

Read the official report below.
The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) at the end of its 77th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos has announced that the nine months old strike continues.

The NEC said status quo remains pending the outcome of its meeting with the Senate Committee on Education on Tuesday July 1st, 2014.

ASUP President, Chibuzor Asomugha, disclosed at the end of the meeting that the stakeholders meeting scheduled for June 24 got stalled due to the absence of representatives of the government.

“That meeting was supposed to be held, resolution reached and an agreement was also signed. It was against this backdrop that we fixed the NEC meeting so that, if we have the resolutions, we will come here and suspend the strike.

EducationNotice To All Jambites by kdos(op): 4:00pm On Dec 24, 2013
Following the words of the JAMB Registrar after the 2013 exercise, Prof Dibu Ojerinde said: “We have gone digital in JAMB.” What he meant by ‘going digital’ is that the Jamb 2014/2015 UTME examination is likely to be a Computer Based Test. to avoid surprises in the exam hall, we encourage participants to learn how to operate a computer system which is as simple as ABC. In the examination hall, your computer will be “timed” when it reached the allotted time, it will switch off, even if you have not answer any question! So the call to be fast is needed.

All admission seeking candidates in the Jamb 2014, mostly candidates within the South-Eastern environs are advice to make early registrations for the JAMB 2014/2015 UTME to avoid missing out on available centers. Last session (Jamb 2013), with the record number of 1.8 Million candidates who participated in the examination, Centres were exhausted in the within three months of registrations, and late registrants were pushed to the North, north east and north central zones of the country to take their examinations. (if you are not in the north, i know you don’t want to risk going to the North to write your jamb exam, due to the Boko Haram animals) A lot of candidates miss the last year jamb exercise due to this problem, so we encourage you to purchase the form as soon as possible.

Applicants who wrote the JAMB 2013/2014 UTME examination and selected the Paper and Pencil Type (PPT) were basically Victims of inefficiency of marking by the board, with majority of them, being forced to settle with scores that are not theirs, we therefore advice candidates applying for the JAMB 2014/2015 UTME to thread carefully, on what to type of exam to select, we recommend the Computer Based Test (CBT) and if you are good with computer, then there is no need to be scared of it. From last year experience, a lot of candidates who wrote last year jamb and choose CBT came out with flying colours. it is up to you which one you want to go for. But thread carefully…

From statistic, over 1.8 Million Nigerian Students registered and participated in the JAMB 2013/2014 UTME exercise, and not more than 450,000 of these students were admitted, together with over 1.2 million students leaving our various high schools, due to the low amount to candidates who are offered admission last year, we are very sure more than 2 million candidates will participate in the JAMB 2014-2015 UTME exams. We therefore advice candidates to prepare for the competitions. One way to beat it is to Jack your book (read your book).

The JAMB 2014 candidates are advised to stay away from the Most Selected Institutions as outlined below;
• University Of Lagos (Unilag)
• University Of Benin (Uniben)
• University Of Nigeria (UNN)
• University Of Ilorin (Unilorin)
• Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. (Unizik)
• Federal University of Technology, Owerri (Futo)
• University of Ibadan (UI)
• University of Port Harcourt (Uniport)

This are popular-one of the popular- institutions in Nigeria. The reason why we advice that you stay away from this universities is to boost your chances of admission, not because you are not intelligent, but because admission slots are very limited, the competition in these institutions is higher and if it is not your catchment area, then your chance of getting admitted is equal to zero. But still, if you must choose any of the above institutions, please also look for Universities that accept 2nd choice and that are not too competitive. Take note of this as you will remember it when Admission commence. Now success tips 6 will show us courses that are very competitive and why you have to ignore them…

All candidates seeking Admission into Tertiary Institutions via the JAMB 2014/2015 UTME exercise are advice to be very careful in their selection of courses, it is no news that the following courses have the highest number of applicants.
• Medicine And Surgery
• Economics
• Accounting
• Law/Civil Law
• Pharmacy etc.
• Mechanical Engr/civil/elect elect etc.

Selecting one of the above means you will be competing with thousands of candidates for the space, which is likely not up to hundreds in all the Institutions. But if you are however interested in any of the above courses, you must learn how to balance your selections appropriately to increase your chances of getting admitted. Ensure you also select courses that has few number of candidates, and by so ding, you can be sure of your Admission and if you so please, you can apply for change of course after been admitted. This is as to boost your chances of admission, not because you are not intelligent, but because slots are limited, competition is higher and you are getting older, plus, ASUU would make you age before time, hence, make hay while the sun shine.

It is important also that you know the accreditation status of the course(s) you want to apply for in the choice Institutions before submitting your application.

What is Accreditation of course?
Some university offer courses that has not been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), and if you end up in one of those departments, you would have wasted your years for nothing! Because you won’t be given any original certificate! For example; Medicine and Surgery has NOT been accredited in the Benue State University, BSUM and many others Universities, and candidates who is admitted into BSUM will end up spending 8+ years in vain.

How will you know if your course has been accredited in your choice institution?
You can know this from the Jamb 2014 Brochure that will be given to you when you purchase the Jamb 2014-2015 UTME Form. Also you can drop your comment and we will let you know if you are good to go.

Most Institutions requires a cut-off of 240 in the JAMB-UTME. (example of such institution is University of Ilorin) the minimum cut off for Medicine in Unilorin is 240 and 220+ for major courses, while admission at the University of Ibadan and Unilag begins with your O-Level results, therefore, its very important that you have the basic requirements of the Institution before applying for admission. In fact, this apply to almost all the Institutions in Nigeria. Ensure you have your COMPLETE O’LEVEL RESULTS for your chosen courses before buying Jamb, if you don’t have… you are only going to frustrate yourself. Even when you are admitted, you will be screen out after they collect your acceptance fee and school fee.
