The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised hopes of students that it is close to calling off the ongoing strike action that has lasted for over three months. ASUU on Monday issued a condition that will cause it to immediately call off the strike that led to the closure of many public universities in Nigeria. Prof. Emmanuel Osedeke, ASUU president challenged the federal government to accept the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) payment platform for it to call off the ongoing strike. Speaking on Channels Television on Monday night, Osedeke said the strike will continue unless the government accepts UTAS and honour the 2009 agreement. "Let government tell us they have finished testing the UTAS and sign the agreement, then tomorrow we will call off the strike," Osedeke said. "We challenge the government, when would they sign the agreement? When would they accept UTAS? These are the two questions we should ask Nigerian government." The ASUU president said their demands are in the interest of Nigerian students who are learning under unconducive environments. "Go to Ghana there or South Africa and see if you can compare them - that is our struggle - We call ourselves the giants of Africa. "We are simply waiting for government to sign the agreement - Once that is done we will call off the strike." ASUU has been at loggerheads with the federal government for over three years over its refusal to honour the 2009 agreement it entered with the union. Some of the demands in the agreements include the condition of service of University lecturers to be reviewed every five years, issue of salaries and allowances, revitalisation of public universities, University Transparency Accountability Solution and the alleged inconsistencies in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) payment platform which government insists will be used to pay lecturers.

Manchester United striker, Cristiano Ronaldo is set for a shock move to Barcelona this summer. Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, has spoken to Barcelona president Joan Laporta about the possibility of signing the Portugal captain this summer. Ronaldo had already informed Manchester United that he wants to leave the club this summer and doesn't believe they are in a position to challenge for silverware next season. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has already been linked with a host of clubs, including Chelsea, Sporting Lisbon, Roma, Bayern Munich and AS Roma. But now, a new, shocking name has emerged, with Spanish newspaper AS reporting that Mendes has been meeting with Laporta and Ronaldo's name was part of the discussions. Both men met on Monday evening for dinner and the prospect of signing Ronaldo, who, of course, enjoyed a remarkable career with Real Madrid, was on the agenda, with Barcelona having explored the possibility a year ago too. Back then, Barcelona wanted a star name to fill the void left by Lionel Messi, who signed for Paris Saint-Germain, but they were not in a position to afford Ronaldo. However, Barcelona had been targeting a move for Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski. But the Catalan club could sign Ronaldo if they are unable to get Lewandowski this summer as Bayern are unwilling to sell and are demanding a transfer fee of around £50 million even though the Poland forward only has one year left on his deal. Although Ronaldo would command a huge salary, the 37-year-old could be a more affordable option than Lewandowski if Manchester United agreed to waive a transfer fee, having bought him for a £21.4m fee from Juventus last summer.

Yes, it is true. I can testify to that. I was once a mortuary attendant, I was not supposed to be on duty, I was helping my colleague who was home sick and by night, I was resting or should I say sleeping when I heard as if someone opened a door and walked out. I was frightened but I man up and decided to go and know what was happening and as I got inside, it was as if I saw two people walking to my direction and as soon as I switched on my touch, lo and behold, it was actually a walking corpse and the worst part was that eyes were opened. I literally bed wetted as though I wasn't lying on a bed. They were actually like five feet away from me which gave me time to know the next step but I was frozen on that spot and as they were closing in, I took to my heels straight to the bus-stop luckily I saw a bus by to 1 in the morning and I paid a thousand naira and forgot my change and ran straight to my house and started hitting the door as if I was being chased. it was one of the most shocking moments of my life. Remembered and decided to share with you cos you brought it up. I actually resigned the next day though.[/b] |
