Politics › Re: If GEJ Had Won I Don't Think The Economy Will Be This Worse. by kemus: 7:22am On Feb 16, 2016 |
tuniski: 1. The real reason for the unprecedented depreciation of the naira to 345/$ is the sluggishness of the current govt. It was 197/$ as of 29/may/2015. A GEJ's govt would have devalued and create a forex regime stability. The decline in oil revenue though critical and frustrating, there is no way out of a weakening naira but, having stability will largely cushion this spiraling depreciation and 'technical devaluation'. 200 to 345 within 8months and still falling is a disaster.
2. FDI (Foreign Direct Investments) won't have ceased and declined. Investors work within a stable forex regime and clear directional govt. Stability allows for planning and execution. This will ultimately mitigate against the unabated increase in headline inflation. Jobs will be saved and the Q on Q sectoral declines would have been stemmed.
3. Borrowing. GEJ would have effectively borrowed as needed frontally as a proactive measure. It is clear to all, buhari is having difficulty borrowing as its stand due to the neophyte nature of his economic team promoting welfarist packages during a period of austerity! It remains a mockery of economics that a nation facing dwindling revenue is politically offering welfarism. 500bn on waste during a time of desperate need for investment in capex is sure a no no to lenders.
4. Structural shift. This govt as seen from the scandal of budgeting only say one thing and does another. The first and most significant policy instrument of the govt has exposed the hypocrisy of the administration. Diversification has always been part of every govt for decades. However, the emphasis and political will to radically make the shift has been largely lacking. Taxation is now being drummed up as if it is new, instead of the norm even as the active economic agents are facing hard times occasioned by instability. So who do u tax? U don't drive away investors locally and globally and expect to increase revenue via tax. A GEJ would have continue to attract more investments. 5. Psychology of govt: the current govt blaming policy and a victim mentality have been a negative signal to all. They campaigned and threatened parallel govt should they not win. Now they have won and with no post election litigation for the first time in our democratic journey. The immediate goodwill was massive but, has now been replaced by blaming and jerk kneel response to governance. Great leaders are made through hard times! Obama came in during global meltdown and a USA facing two wars in Iraq n Afghanistan but, didn't make blaming Bush/republicans governance! Today, unemployment has falling from the 10.4% high of 2009 to. 4.7% today. Things won't positively change playing the victim for a mandate u campaigned Vigorously across the country for, no it won't! Wish I could give ur submission more likes |
Politics › Re: Donald Trump In Twitter Spat With Saudi Prince Alwaleed by kemus: 8:21am On Dec 13, 2015 |
a2personal2013: The issue of terrorism has been on an exponential increase recently and everyone would agree that the inaction of Muslims worldwide has also been a contributory factor. I am surprise to see the huge and unending list of Muslim faithfuls coming out to criticize Mr Trump. If only 50% of these people can come out openly to criticize ISIS and other terrorist group affiliated with the Muslim religion, the number of their recruits would have tremendously suffered a downward plunge !
I think the bulk of the game lies in their own hands. Muslims should be very open in their criticism of these Monsters and terrorists who base their ideologies on Islam. We must not forget that most people do not see them as terrorist but as people who believe strongly in the Koran. From ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Al Shabaab, Boko Haram to name just a few, all seem to believe on ideology that originates from the religion.
Its not enough to attack Mr Trump. Its about time the Muslims dissociate themselves from these nefarious groups. Muslims have been too proactive in this fight against terrorism. They must amplify their strength and voice not just to attack Mr Trump but to speak against this common enemy of the innocent citizens of the world. A 1000 likes for this truth |
Politics › Re: World Diplomatic Circles To Honour Jonathan In Geneva by kemus: 8:23am On Dec 08, 2015 |
LordAdam: Many people had different expectations from GEJ. What everyone failed to realize is the limitations GEJ faced. I'm pretty sure if PMB had his way, he would have wanted a different crop of ministers, but Alas he had to compensate those who stood for him even if they had questionable records.
That is a former military dictator who has been trying to get into power for 12 years in a party that is less than a year old. Now compare to a gentle civilian who rose through the ranks out of providence, had no previous aspiration to the presidency, in the now defunct largest party in Africa.
Did you expect Jonathan to stand up successfully against strong-willed chieftains who had the nation in its gauntlets and still do. Can you remember how the removal of the fuel subsidy was grossly fought against? The stalwarts in PDP under GEJ have now subtly crossed the border into APC. Do you think subsidy will just disappear, or power supply will just miraculously become a 24/7/365 thing, or that the refineries will start working, or all the federal roads will be tarred, or we would have a fully functioning rail network connecting the whole country, or that we would all of a sudden have world-class hospitals, or that out tertiary institutions will climb up to enter top-1000 universities in the world? Come on this is not Disneyland, it's Nigeria.
Democracy is not autocracy or a monarchy. You cannot bite the hands that fed you without consequences. For a preamble, look at Boko Haram, when it could have been squashed, the Northern elders by their silence let it grow to haunt the GEJ administration to keep to their promise that they would make the country "ungovernable" for him. BH prisoners were routinely released by sympathetic officials.
Blaming all those on GEJ is like blaming PMB for the Southern Ijaw violence in Bayelsa. This underscores why PMB is currently voicing his frustration as to the complexity of the anti-corruption fight. There are party chieftains, economic behemoths (subsidy cabal, power cabal...), saboteurs and so on.
In Nigeria, transformation of infrastructure deficit, lopsided power, shabby health care, dilapidated education cannot happen in 4 years, heck in 16 years. You need progressive small steps.
And progressive small steps GEJ took. What he did was establish a way to keep the money flowing (FDI) by painting the picture of a liberal economy for the private sector to take advantage of. Then he worked on revamping the Agriculture sector to a sustainable pace. The took a step back to revitalize the industries with giant strides made in the auto segment. He revamped the rail sector as well.
He also did make small improvements in other sectors. He gave INEC more autonomy to bolster the nation's democracy and a few other improvements that aren't too significant to be felt. The rest of the time he had to deal with quibbles inside his party, from hostile regions, security challenges, irresponsible opposition, saboteurs in his government, economic hoodlums who were finding it difficult to let go of the do-what-you-like era of OBJ.
You have to face it, leadership can only do so much in Nigeria. Look at PMB and the state of the nation now, do you understand what I mean now?
About diversion of funds. For crying out loud it happens virtually everywhere. Do you know of the blackwater scandal in the US. Or how defence contractors regularly take mouth-watering defence contracts from the US and NATO and deliver sub-par services.
Do not be a simpleton. Part of the money that was meant for the development of Rivers and Lagos were diverted to PMB's campaign. We wouldn't hear of it because APC is in power now.
There's one thing I never do, I don't expect the devil to say the truth. Don't expect politicians to represent your interest. At least not in the present Nigeria. GEJ did not pillage as much as OBJ.
I am not trying to defend the corruption under GEJ: Lord knows I was irritated by the many scandals during his presidency like Odua's bulletproof car scandal. But I did not let these setbacks blind me from the little progress we were making.
Unemployment rate was sinking, new businesses were setting shop (look at the malls), food security was improving...
You don't throw away the baby and the bath water. GEJ did not fail. He only did not live up to the dreamy superman messianic figure that short-sighted dim-witted unenlightened simpletons had envisaged.
Exactly the same way PMB is not living up to the saintly figure the exact same people had envisaged.

heykims: I opposed the motion in d past regime not because I didn't believe it was needed not to be removed but because I trusted nothing that that govt brought forward. Now this Buhari govt, if he says removal of subsidy is the best for the country, so be it.

edogirl2: "Various initiatives have been put in place in order to see that northerners from wherever they are, from the 19 states, become one as far as voting is concerned. We are not saying 100 percent of northerners should be in one political party but that northerners should have one voice, they should decide and dictate the politics of Nigeria; like it has been before independence and even during the First Republic because of the numerical strength of the North. But of recent we became divided so we became so vulnerable. But God in His infinite wisdom and mercy used the goodwill of General Muhammadu Buhari and we have gotten the kind of unity that we have been yearning for for so long. We have realised this dream now. So now that we have achieved the unity we long for because of Buhari’s goodwill, it is only fair that we now make some efforts to consolidate these gains because General Buhari will not be the president for ever. So that after him, we have consolidated on this goodwill and we will be able to grow this unity, political cooperation, electoral cooperation from strength to strength so that the North will as much as possible dictate the political landscape of the country and what happens in Nigeria as it used to do."
_____________
Nairaland SS and SE ill-informed youths jubilating and wanting the north to occupy both Senate Presidency and HoR speakership, can you see your life now.
You will rather have the North have the Presidency, Senate Presidency, House of Rep speakership, Chief Justice of the Federation (basically 4 of the top 5 positions in this country), just so you can spite the SW So, the well-planned complete and total northern domination that will affect your lives negatively does not bother you?
You note in his long rant, this northern man didn't show any consideration for the SE or SS, yet PDP representatives from this 2 regions are lining up to vote for northern domination now which will pave the way for long term 'northern unity' and thus long term northern domination. Exactly what this man say they have planned all along up north.
So, who is the slave now. The SW that wants to prevent this northern domination at all cost or SE and SS representatives that are lining up behind their northern PDP masters to the detriment of their regions' long term well being D plan for nothern domination did not just start. its always been there nd alliance of. d SW n d north is helping to achieve d aim of d north |
