Yes, even as pro western I know he's being very logical here. But another problem is that Russia is still not clear about their objectives in this war. If Ukraine tries to deescalate, they run the risk of having Putin's forces sweep through and punish the rest of the Ukrainian population who don't support Russia with genocide or worse still, attempt to close them off from the sea entirely and punish them forever. This has already happened at Izium and several other places.

I have always known right from time that many eastern populations support Russia. Long before the war started, I studied the situation. It was a typical insurgency there with local support for pro Russian separatists and lots of grey actions by pro Ukrainian militants now known as Azov battalion. But even the referendum was still a sham because Putin took advantage of other anti-Russia populations who ran away from the area, to grab their land as well..

Inasmuch as some indigenous populations support Russia, others had their lands taken away and added to Russia.

First of all it was world war 2, not 11.

Second, the US nuked Japan not because it couldn't defeat the japs, but because nukes would cause far fewer casualties than using conventional weapons as was done in Dresden, also because the shock and awe factor would force Japan to an early surrender and thus shorten the war and its casualties, which indeed was what happened. Remember at this point the US almost singlehandedly won the war in the East and West by arming the Soviets and the Allies.
